My travel journal
My week in Aguilar de campoo Saturday 20.2 I woke up at 4.15 am, packed the rest of my things and went to the school where we jumped to a minibus and started our journey. The first stop was the Luleå airport in Sweden where we ate a bit of breakfast and tried desperately to search for an internet connection. Our next stop was Stockholm,Sweden, where we did a little bit of shopping to help pass time a bit faster. Then we flew to Frankfurt,Germany. And from there we finally flew to Madrid,Spain, and got to see a beautiful view of Spain. We were very excited to get out of the airport so it felt like it was taking forever for the luggage to get to us, but finally we were ready to take a 20min taxi ride to the hotel which was in the middle of the city.We took our belongings to the hotel room and after freshening up a bit we started a small tour around the city with our teacher. She showed us the Plaza del sol and plaza Mayor and made sure that we knew where the hotel was. Then we had a couple of hours to explore the city and after walking around for a bit we decided to go to starbuck’s to get some coffee. After which we went to the hotel to try and get some sleep. Sunday 21.2 We woke up, got dressed and went downstairs for a breakfast. It was really tasty and the best part was definitely churros with a dash (a gallon) of chocolite. Then we went to see the king’s castle, some parks, and some other fancy places in Madrid. The weather was really nice and sunny .After that it was time to go back to the hotel and take a minibus back to the airport where we picked up the groups from Tallinn and Italy. Then we started the 4hour drive to aguilar de campoo. The car ride went past really quickly by talking with the italians and watching the scenery. Finally we were in Aguilar, where we got to meet our host families and go to our “homes”. My family immediately seemed really nice, although Laura was the only one who spoke english. We went to get some drinks in a local hotel’s lobby and Julia and her host family were there too.We played pool and took some pictures, it was really nice. Then we went home where I unpacked my suitcase while the family’s mom cooked us some food. They usually eat around 10.00pm, which is really late for me, so i wasn’t very hungry but the food was really good so i had to eat.after that i helped Laura to do her english homework and then we went to bed. Monday 22.2 On monday we had toast and milk for breakfast and then we took the bus to school. We had tours around the School which was an old monastery. Then we took some pictures and went to the city hall to hear a speech from the mayor, who then gave us bags where we put our folders and pens. After that we had a coffee break but it wasn’t that good because the coffee was really strong. Then we went back home to eat and rest for a while.later that evening we took a taxi back to the school to play sports and to learn about the school system in Spain.Unfortunately i wasn’t feeling that well so most of the evening i was just sitting outside. After the sports we went back home to eat again and then went to sleep. Tuesday 23.2 The morning was the same as on monday. We ate and went to the school with bus.We gathered in our meetin room and from there we walked back to the bus stop and took another bus to La Olmeda where we had a guided tour through out the remains of villa Romana. The place was really big and our group was guite big too so it was hard to keep up with the guide. We got headphones were we were able to hear the guide talking but often when we got to that exact place he had been talking about,he had moved to another location already. After the tour we got to see a short video about the time the villa was still in use. After that we continued our trip to the city of Valladolid. There we had the chance to walk around the city and explore its beautiful streets. We went to eat on a restaurant and asked the locals which was the shortest way back to our meeting place, the big fountain. Then we had a visit in the El norte de castillamagazine and they talked about a project called STARTinnova. It was really boring and everybody was falling asleep.I didint really get much out of it and i don really understand why they told ud about it since it was only for the spanish students. Finally we started the busride back to aguilar and it was brobably the funniest ride in the whole trip because we were laughin the whole time.My Host mom picked us up from the school and drove us all to our homes. At home i watched football with my host brother and then we ate dinner and went to bed. Wednesday 24.2 The morning was the same as usual. From School we took a bus to the Gullon biscuit factory where we had a guided tour through out every station and step there was on making the cookies. They spoke really good english and were really welcoming. It was nice to see how everything works in there and how the cookies actually are made. After the tour they gave us each 2 packets of biscuits which was really nice. Then we had a luch break whit our hosts and we had a littlebit time to go see theyr friends.then we went to the library to hear about the following schedule and the meaning of the things for this project. We were divided into 2 groups.first group went to hear a raduo programme and the other one went to a spanish class.at the half point we switched places. The radio programme was really boring and it was on spanish so i didint really understand much of it.The spanish lesson was mostly just annoying. We learned how to say hi and good bye and the time and so one, things that we allready knew. The teacher was awful and teased everybody if they didint say the word exactly as he did.We got a littlebit mad at him because he was saying that we were sayin some things the wrong way.Yes meaby we werent sayin them in the spanish way but we are not from spain and there is many other countires that speak spanish differently.anyways i did not enjoy the activities they had that day.after the lesson we got to go home to eat and relax for a while before we had to come back to the shcool to a konfress.after that we made a groop work on studying and living. Finally we got to go back home and spend the night with our hosts. We went to see the city and found a really cheap candy store so ofcourse had to buy alot of candy for ourselves.Later that evening we found a funny picture of tiia and laughed at that for a good 40minutes.then we had dinner and as usual, went to bed. Thursday 25.2 We took the bus to the city of Burgos where we had a guided tour of a really big cathedral. The guide was really funny and told us fun facts about everything.after that we took some pictures and went shopping.I spent 2 hours in Bershka with Julia and left with 3 bags full of clothes. Then we went bowling with our hosts to a gaming hall and it was fun. After bowling we had a littlebit spare time to go play other games so we did that. Then we went back to our homes and got ready for our dinner with the other students from this project.First they didint have places for all of us so we ended up sitting separated but it was okay. Then we went to a “disco”.nobody was dancing at first but we didint let that stop us and after a while everybody was dancing. We had a really fun night, but we got home guite late so we didint get that much of a sleep. Friday 26.2 I was super tired but we had to go to School to do some work related stuff on the internet. We also had to write evaluation of the trip. Some had to go to the airport so we said goodbye to them and then went to see a church which had been carved onto a hill. Then we went back home and back to the candy store to get more candy for the trip home.We had to leave our families later that night and go stay the night in hotel valentin because of the snow storm was coming in town.We had a little something to eat and then we went to the disco for a while and then back to sleep. Saturday 27.2 We ate an early breakfast at the hotel and then started our busride back to Madrid.I slept the whole way so i can´t remember anything from that ride.Everybody else went to the airport and we went to a hotel where we had a suite. Then we went to see the city a littlebit more and went shopping again.then we went back to the hotel to sleep. Sunday 28.2 we took a taxi to the airport and flew to munchen. From munchen we flew to Stockholm and from there to Luleå.Then we took a taxi back to our School and from there our parents picked us up.I can remember much of this day because i spend most of it sleeping. Alisa Isometsä My travel journal — Aguilar de Campoo by Tiia Tyrväinen Saturday 20.2.2016 On Saturday I woke up at 4.50 am in order to catch the taxi to Luleå, Sweden. The taxi left our school at 6.25 in the morning, and when we got to Luleå, we flew to Stockholm. After that, we jumped on a plane to Frankfurt and then to Madrid. In Madrid we first went to our hotel called
Petit Palace Arenal,
and then we did some sightseeing:
Plaza Mayor
and
Plaza del Sol
were full of people in the evening. We girls got also some free time and headed to the streets for couple of hours. Sunday 21.2.2016 Sunday started with a lovely breakfast, including my very first churros with melted chocolate. After breakfast we went sightseeing with our teacher as our guide. Lots of buildings, parks, plazas and of course,
Palacio Real de Madrid
and
Gran Vía,
which is Madrid’s main street. After sightseeing we drove by bus to the airport and picked up the Sicilians from Italy and the Estonians. We had to wait a bit, but soon we were on our way to Aguilar de Campoo! On the way the views were amazing! So green, beautiful and huge fields. In Aguilar Maitane, my host, and her mother were waiting for me with Maitane’s friend. We drove to their house in Cervera de Pisuerga, 26 km from Aguilar with snowpeaked mountains on the sides of the road. Maitane’s dad and brother were home welcoming me and after a little tour around the house Maitane and her friend took me to a bar, where we drank some Spanish juice which tasted like
glögi
. In the bar I spoke with Maitane’s friends and also with my friend Sonja, who came with her host to the bar as well. When Maitane and I got back home, we all ate dinner together after I showed Maitane some pictures and videos. Soon it was time to go to sleep, because the next morning I had an early wakeup. Monday 22.2.2016 Wakeup at 6.45 am, then some breakfast. I didn’t have much time and I had to hurry but I made it to the bus and to the school,
Santa María la Real.
The school was an old monastery which had been renovated and restored. It was so stunning! We had a teacher showing us the place and after that the Basques arrived. Together we went to the little museum part of the school and to the church, where they showed us an impressive video. Then came the British crew and we headed to the town hall, where the mayor spoke to us about the local industries, and by that I mean biscuits and tourism. Now and then we also took pictures, laughed a lot and got to know the Sicilians. And of course, we tasted some very strong coffee. That wasn’t my favourite…Back home we had lunch time. Paella was new to me. The lunch time didn’t last long, because soon we were on a taxi talking to this lovely lady, who drove us back to the school. In there, we had sport activities after an introduction about Spanish school system held by some students. Then the taxi came to pick us up, and as soon as I got back home we headed to Maitane’s English lesson. Dinner was late, as usual, so soon after that we went to sleep. But I got some strawberries for dessert with “leche condensada” and whipped cream. That was so delicious. Then I went to bed. Tuesday 23.2.2016 I woke up at 6.25 and had some breakfast. The orange juice was so good in my house, so real and fresh, nothing added. From school we left by bus to
Villa Romana in La Olmeda. There we had a tour inside this building that hid an old mansion’s remain under its roof. And not surprisingly, we took a lot of pictures. When the tour was finished, we headed towards the city of Valladolid, and on our way we laughed so much! That laughing didn’t stop even when we went sightseeing. We also had some free time, which we spent by eating, shopping and taking pictures together. In Valladolid there was +15 degrees! We call that summer in Finland! After our selfie time we learned about STARTInnova, a project by
El Norte de Castilla
newspaper, in which young people create a business idea and promote it. It’s also a competition. Then we saw a little bit of the office of the magazine. After that we left to Aguilar. Back in Cervera we had dinner, watched some football and went to bed after some chatting. Wednesday 24.2.2016 Early wakeup, some breakfast and then to school. And then the visit to the
Gullón
factory, were we saw how biscuits are made. We also got some wafer biscuits for free. In the factory it was so hot right next to the huge ovens where the cookies are baked. Back in school we had our lunch break and hanging out with our hosts and friends. After that we were told about the meanings of the activities relating to this project. Then we divided to two groups: the other group went first to listen and watch the
Onda Cero
live radio programme, were they discussed about this project, and the other went first to a Spanish lesson. Then we switched. In the Spanish lesson we were taught some basics: introducing yourself, numbers, weekdays and so on. But soon it was time to eat peas and salad back home. By the way, it was so delicious! After eating we had a conference and career boosters in the school. We were divided in groups where we had to think about competences required by the employers in the future as well as the future’s labour market. When the conference was over we returned back to families. Personally, I went to my host’s English lesson in the evening, which was fun. After the lesson we dined and went to sleep. Thursday 25.2.2016 As the morning routine was over and we were in our meeting place at school, we left by bus to the city of Burgos. The bus ride was full of laughter. In Burgos we visited the cathedral, which was so amazing and beautiful. We took a lot of pictures and had this funny man showing us the cathedral. After this visit we had free time, and we Finnish headed to eat something, and then of course shopping. We had to be back at the cathedral after our free time was over, where we took some group pictures before going to bowling. The hosts were bowling with us. Some of the students played games before leaving to Aguilar in an arcade that was right next to the bowling alleys. When we arrived to Aguilar we had so little time to go back home, go to shower, get ready and head back to Aguilar from Cervera for the dinner party we had for all the students and hosts in this project. We were back home after midnight. Friday 26.2.2016 The morning started with a job search simulation. We had a person from
Gullón
talking to us, and then we also searched jobs on the internet as well as evaluated our stay in Aguilar. Then it was time for some students to leave. The rest of us visited a church that was carved in a rock. After the visit we returned to our homes. In Cervera my friends and I had to go shopping for candy and “leche condensada”, which is so good. But because of the forecasted snowstorm we had to leave Cervera already on Friday instead of Saturday, and we had to stay in Aguilar in Hotel Valentin for the night. There we had something small to eat before going to bed. Saturday 27.2.2016 In the morning we Finns were tired after a couple hours of sleep. After breakfast we jumped on a bus and basically slept the whole way back to Madrid. First we said goodbye to the Sicilians at the airport and then we took the Estonians to their hotel. After that we went to our hotel that was amazing! We got a suite to ourselves! We walked around the
Retiro
park and saw the museums and some other places from the outside. We also got time for shopping! We were back at the hotel at 10.00 pm. Sunday 28.2.2016 On Sunday we woke up at 4.00 am and felt so tired. The taxi picked us up and took us to the airport. We flew from Madrid to München, München to Stockholm, and from Stockholm to Luleå. From Luleå we went back to our school by taxi. From there we went to our homes. And that was our trip. My trip to Spain with my school Saturday 20th February We went to our school at 06:45 am. We drove to Luleå a few hours. We flew to Stockholm. After that we flew to Frankfurt. Our flight was a little bit late so we were in a hurry. Finally we arrived in Madrid. It was 08:30 pm. We went to our hotel by taxi. Then it really felt like we were on vacation. We saw all those traffic lights and many people walking in the streets. Our hotel room wasn’t very spacious for four girls. We did some sightseeing and then we went to some shops and to Starbucks. We all were a little bit tired so we went to sleep. Sunday 21st February We woke up at 7:30 am. After doing our make ups, changing our clothes and packing, we had breakfast at the hotel. There were many fruit, churros with chocolate, fresh orange juice etc at the breakfast table. Then we went out. A little bit sightseeing with teachers and then we had free time. We bought some snacks for our bus trip. Then we took our luggage and went to wait for our bus. We drove to the airport to pick up Estonians and Sicilians. Both flights were late. Finally the Estonians came. They were shy so we didn’t talk to them. Then the Sicilians came and they were so friendly and lovely! We got along well. We all hugged each other and all were happy. Everybody went to the bus and we kept talking. We listened to music and everything was good. I loved those landscapes. Finally we were in Aguilar de Campoo. It was 05:30 pm. My host Alba was there waiting for me with her family. Her mum drove us to their home and there was a sign with balloons in the door and it said “Bienvenida Sonja ” which means “Welcome Sonja”. That was so cute! First we all were a little bit shy. But they all were so friendly to me. We went for a walk with Alba and her friend. We went to a bar because there was wifi. One of my Finnish friends was there too. We talked about how it was in our host families. We had dinner at nine o’clock. We ate ‘tortilla de patatas’ (omelette with potato). The girls were studying and listening to music with me. After that we went to sleep. It’s so lovely that people in Spain do those cheek kisses and huggs. Monday 22nd February In the morning Alba made me some breakfast. She made me fresh orange juice and it tasted lovely! I ate some bread too and an apple. But in Spain people don’t usually eat breakfast. For example Alba and her friend only drank a glass of milk with some sugar! But they have ‘second breakfast’ when they only eat a sandwich. In Finland we have a lunch at our school. So Alba made me a sandwich to take with me every day. We went to a bus stop. The bus came at about 07:45 am. It was a little bit late every morning I guess. In Spain that is normal but not in Finland. And in the bus people were talking and laughing together. But here in my country people don’t talk with each other in a bus in the morning. I sat next to Alba. The trip to her school took about 2030 minutes. I walked to the school with Alba and she left me in our meeting room. She had to go for a lesson so she hugged and kissed me and went to her lesson. Every morning all of us who were in this project went to the meeting room. The school’s headmaster and English teacher told us about this project and welcomed us. After that one guide showed us the school and told about it. It had been a Monastery. So the school didn’t look like a school. After that we went to school’s museum and there was another guide who was telling us about it. Then we went to a hall. They showed us a video. It was exciting. The video told us about religion and history. We took some pictures and videos and then we went to the Town Hall. Then we went to another hall. There was a major there telling us about how important tourism and biscuit factories are to Aguilar de Campoo. After that we had some free time. We, Finnish students were with the Sicilians. We took some pictures together and went to a café. I drank the worst coffee ever! But we had fun. Then we had to go back to the school. We went to Alba’s home by bus. We ate some pasta for lunch. After lunch I read with my host family in Finnish. Then I read them in Spanish. I had to go to the school again. We had some sport activities. It lasted one hour. We went home by taxi. Alba, me and her sister went to a shop. We bought some food. Then Alba’s mother Virginia made us a dinner. For dessert we had strawberries and yoghurt. I talked late with Alba. Tuesday 23th February In the morning we went to the school by bus.We were at the school for a while. We went to Villa Romana La Olmeda by bus. There was a guide who told us about romanesque structures there. We took pictures and watched the places. After that they showed us a short video. Then we went back to the bus. We drove to Valladolid. In the bus we watched landscapes. We had some sightseeing there. Then we had two hours freetime. We went to one restaurant. I ate some pasta. It was good. Then we did some shopping. We had to go to our meeting place at a four o’clock. It was one square and there was a fountain. We went back to our families. I told to Alba about my day. We ate dinner. It was a fish like a vendace the fish we eat in Finland. I called to Finland to my family. Then we went to sleep. Wednesday 24th February I was so tired in the morning. I ate my breakfast. When we were in the school we took a bus to a cookie factory Gullón. A woman told us about the company and the factory. It was a nice presentation. After that we went to the factory. The smell was so good and I felt a little bit hungry.. So many biscuits and they all were so similar! There were so many ovens there. So it was very hot sometimes. We thanked for the visit and then they gave us few packages of cookies. I was thinking about the bus driver. Maybe it wasn’t nice because everybody was eating their cookies in the bus… We came back to the school. They made a radio program. Actually I didn’t understand anything because they talked only in Spanish. Then we had a Spanish lesson. The teacher told us only the basic words and so on. For us Finns it was easy because we have been studying Spanish. When the school day was over I told everything that had happened today to Alba. She was laughing at me because I was so funny while I told about the cookie factory. We went to the bus and when we were at home we ate some lunch. I had to go back to school because we had a conference. I was a little bit disappointed. In fact I didn’t learn much. There was a man who told a little bit about that. We made some notes about what he said. We did one job in the groups. We had to think about skills we would need in the working life. In the begin we didn’t understand what to do. But we got the job done finally. After the conference we went back to our families. We went out with other girls and we had a lot of fun! We went to a candy shop and to the bar and we played table fotboll. I laughed so much! Everybody was having fun. We had to go back home. We ate our dinner and went to sleep. Thursday 25th February We went to Burgos. We were in the bus a few hours. There we went to The Catedral. It was one of the most wonderful places I have been to. For example in one room there were 2000 roses on the walls! It was very ornamental. So many paintings on the windows, walls, floors and roofs. Even pictures can’t tell how amazing it was! After our visiting we had some free time. Of course we went shopping. I bought some clothes. For instance a hat and blouses. We went to one restaurant too. Then we all went bowling. Our hosts came there too. It was very nice because I had been missing Alba. I really like bowling but there were so many people so it wasn’t that fun. There was a gaming room there. Me and my friend played one other game too. We drove motorcycles. We screamed and laughed a lot. It felt fun to be a kid for a while. We were very busy because we had a dinner with other young people. When we finally got to our home I ran to the shower and so on. We went to a restaurant. We ate there and then we went to a disco. We had fun. After that we went back to our families. Me and Alba were tired so we went to sleep. Friday 26th February On Friday we were only in the school. We looked for some summer jobs and other jobs on the internet. We went to a church too. It was made in the rock. A few groups went back to their home countries. After school day we went to our host families. We had to go to Aguilar de Campoo in the evening beauce there might be too much snow there the next day. So we had to say goodbye to each other. But first we ate our lunch and we had some cake too! I did my last shopping. I got some souvenirs. I really had an amazing host family. And I knew I will miss all of them. Alba was with me as much as she could. She cried with me. She had become so important to me. But I will see her very soon! Last thing Alba said to me was “Minä rakastan sinua” which means “I love you” in Finnish. She was the best host ever! Thanks to her a lot! We were in the same hotel with our teachers. We ate something at the hotel and went to sleep. Saturday 27th February We had to wake up early because we went to Madrid. We were sleeping in the bus. Sicilians and Estonians were with us. We had to walk with our luggage. Finally we got to our hotel. It was very nice! And there was one Finnish receptionist! We were tired but we went to the city. We were in the one park and so on. After that we went shopping and to a restaurant. We bought something for breakfast. It was a nice day in the city. The weather was nice. Only a little bit windy. We went to sleep after that. Sunday 28th February We woke up very early. A taxi came to pick us up. We had three flights. There was a taxi waiting for us in Luleå. It was evening when I got back home. Sonja Juuso Saturday 20.2.16 I woke up at 5.00 am. I packed up last stuff and then we left to school and there the bus took us to Luleå. The flight left at 9.00 (local time). The next flight left Stockholm to Frankfurt at 13.30. And then the next flight left Frankfurt to Madrid at 16.55. We arrived to Madrid at 19.25. And then we just went to our hotel (

And then we went to the Aguilar and we saw our families and after that my family and I we went some restaurant and we just hung out there with Alisa and Laura. After that we went to home. And I unpacked my stuff and then I went to shower and after that we had dinner and it was like 21.00. And after dinner I watch TV and talked with Paula and Jesus and Anna. And then I went to the sleep. Monday 22.2.16 I woke up at 6.30 and then I did my morning routines and then I went to breakfast. And Anna had made me bocadillo (some kind of sandwich or something). And then we had little bit of free time and after that we visited to ROM. It was museum of architecture and after that we watched video of the building. Then we visited to Town hall and there was mayor’s speech. After that we went back to Cervera by the same bus. And we had lunch which was huge like we had three meals. And then we watched again TV and then I needed to go back to Aguilar with other Finnish girls and there Spanish students told about Spanish education system. After that we had sport activities but unfortunately Alisa and I we were sick so we just laid there. And when clock was 19.00 and our taxi took us back to Cervera and after that I went to sleep and then I woke up and I did all my evening routines and then we ate dinner and we talked and watched TV again.
