Before the competition stars, the participants will arrive to
Graciosa for training, one or two weeks before.
Family members or other people joining them, will probably
intend to visit the Island of Graciosa or other parts of the
Azores.
Likewise, the participants will intend to take advantage of the
fact that are already in the Azores, to visit other spots after
the competition.
Therefore, here-by Turangra presents information on the
islands, as well as suggestions of activities that can be done,
while staying in the Azores.
This information has no prices included, as tours should be
assembled in an on request basis, and on conjunction with
the airline flights to and from the Azores.
GRACIOSA
PLACES AND CLIMATE
In an oval shape, Graciosa surface is 61,66 km2, 12,5 km long and 8,5 km wide.
Not very hilly, flat and low in the North and Northeast, slowly rises up to the
altitude of 398 m at Pico Timão. It is located at 28º 05’ longitude west and 39º
05’ latitude north. Of mild climate, it is the least humid island of the Archipelago.
Gracefulness is a constant of the landscape and sights, which explains the
name of the island – Graciosa. Its is equally called The White Island, due to its
toponymics, Pedras Brancas, Serra Branca, Barro Branco. Places to visit: Furna
do Enxofre, Monte de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda , Caldeirinha , Pico Timão, Termas
do Carapacho, Ilhéu da Praia, Ilhéu da Baleia, the windmills, Vila de Santa Cruz.

PLACES AND CLIMATE
S. Miguel, the biggest island of the Azorean archipelago is
746,76 km2 surface. Its length, according to the axel, is 81
km and the maximum width is 15,5 km. The island’s highest
point is at Pico da Vara, at 1.103 m. It is situated between 25º
8’ and 25º 52’ longitude west and between 37º 43’ and 37º
55’ latitude north. The climate is mild, with temperatures
raging between de 16º C (61º F) in the spring, 21º C (70º F)
in the summer, 18º C (64º F) in the fall and 14º C (57º F) in
the winter, which contributes to the exuberant vegetation, like
hydrangeas, azaleas, etc as well as to the economic value and
for the beautiful sights. São Miguel is known for the production
of pineapple, tea and tobacco. Places to visit: Lagoas das Sete
Cidades, Fogo and Furnas, Parque Terra Nostra, Caldeiras
das Furnas, Tea Plantations, Pineapple Greenhouses, Caldeira
Velha, Ilhéu de Vila Franca, Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, Vila

PLACES AND CLIMATE
Included in the Oriental Group, Santa Maria is
situated 55 miles south of S. Miguel. It is the most
meridional island of the archipelago. With deep
bays, the island of Santa Maria has 97,42 km2
surface, with 17 km long and 9,5 km maximum
width. After a flat hill, follows a rocky area where
Pico Alto (590 m high) is and it is at 28º 08’
longitude west and 37º 43’ latitude north. The
climate is mild, with medium temperatures which
vary between 12º C (54º F) in the winter and 25º
C (77º F) in the summer. Santa Maria is the only
island of the Archipelago which the soil is of a
sedimentar origin, where it is easy to find a great
variety of fossils of molusculs and other bigger
species. It has a variety of different sights, with
a very hilly side at northwest, where the villages
of Santa Bárbara and Santo Espírito are situated
and of a plateau where the villages of Vila do
Porto, Almagreira are, as well as the airport. Places
to visit: Vila do Porto, Ermida de Nossa Senhora
dos Anjos, Praia Formosa, Baía de São Lourenço,
Furna das Pombas, Furna dos Anjos.

TERCEIRA
PLACES AND CLIMATE
In an almost elliptic shape, Terceira island is 381,96 km2
surface, with the maximum dimensions of 29 km long
and 17,5 km wide. A flat hill, Serra do Cume, dominates
the east side of the island. The central area is marked
by a large and low crater of Caldeira de Guilherme
Moniz and by the group of small hills of Serra do
Labaçal, with its highest point in Pico Alto (808 m).
To the west there is the mountain where the large
crater of Serra de Santa Bárbara is, with an altitude of
1021m, the highest point on the island. Terceira Island is
situated at 27º 12’ longitude west and 38º 40’ latitude
north. The climate is nice and mild, with temperatures
ranging from 11º C (52º F) in the winter and 26º C (79º
F) in the summer. Places to visit: Angra do Heroísmo,
Monte Brasil, Mata da Serreta, Serra de Santa Bárbara,
Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz , Algar do Carvão , Serra
do Cume , Ilhéu das Cabras , Miradouro do Facho,
Biscoitos, Impérios do Espírito Santo.

PLACES AND CLIMATE
Long shaped island with 56 km in length
an area of 246,25 km2. Created by several
volcanic eruptions, all in a straight line, to which
the craters are left, the central platform is 700
m medium height, with the highest point at
1.053 m. The sharp and almost vertical coast,
mainly in the north side, is interrupted by small
flat surfaces – the “fajãs”. It is situated at 28º 33’
longitude west and at 38º 24’ latitude north.
The climate, as on the rest of the islands of the
Central group is moderate with annual medium
temperatures between 12º C (53º F) and 25º
C (77º F). S. Jorge is a long shaped island. Its
coast has a combination of entrances and
bays. Places to visit: Pico da Esperança, Fajãs,
Ilhéu do Topo, Velas, Urzelina, Topo, Igreja
de S. Jorge (Velas) and Igreja Santa Catarina
(Calheta).

Developing around the volcano which named it, with 2.351 meters
high, the highest point of Portugal, the island of Pico has an oblong
shape - 42 km long and 15,2 km wide – and the surface totals 447
km2. A flat hill with secondary volcanic cones ends by the sea in high
scarps while the lowest area, to the west, has moderate descents.
It is situated at 28º 20’ longitude west and 38º 30’ latitude north.
The climate is mild, with a moderate humidity average. Medium
temperatures vary between 14º C (57º F) in the winter and 22º C (72º

PLACES AND CLIMATE
Shaped like an irregular pentagon, with
an area of 173,42 km2, the island of Faial
is 21 km long and its maximum width is
14 km. Dominated by the volcanic cone
of Caldeira, which extends in soft slopes
interrupted
by
secondary
volcanic
formations, the island has its highest
point at Cabeço Gordo, with 1.043 m. It
is localized between 38º and 33’ latitude
and north and 28º and 38’ longitude west.
The climate is mild and soft, with weak
thermal amplitudes, like in the rest of the
islands. The highest temperatures are
registered in August and the minimum in
February. The medium temperatures per
season are as follows: Spring 16º C (60º
F), Summer 21ºC (70º F), Fall 19º C (67º F)
and Winter 14º C (58º F). Hills, the different
shapes of the coast, curious islets, physical
accidents caused by the volcanic activity,
typical windmills and innumerous pasture
fields, contribute to the great variety in
the sights of the island of Faial. Places to
visit: City of Horta, Horta Marina, Peter
Café Sport, Porto Pim, Monte da Guia,
Praia do Almoxarife, Cedros, Ponta dos
Capelinhos, Caldeira , Vale de Flamengos.
