Kat Chatter Monday, September 8, 2014 Thought for the day “There is no glory in practice, but without practice, there is no glory.” Unknown Today’s Athletic Events SPORT OPPONENT LOCATION TIME Football (Boys Fr) Football (Boys JV) Mississinewa Marion Mississinewa KHS 5:30 PM 6:30 PM THE WILDKAT Football Kokomo 66, Marion 7 Girls Soccer Bedford-North Lawrence 2, Kokomo 1 Kokomo 2, Evansville Harrison 1 Kokomo 4, Martinsville 1 Boys Cross Country Kokomo placed 18th in the 26-team Marion Invitational Girls Cross Country Cinnamon Andrews placed 121st out of 182 at the Marion Invite. Girls Golf Kokomo placed 16th in the 18-team Lady Broncho Invitational Boys Soccer Kokomo 4, Center Grove 1 Lebanon 3, Kokomo 2 The Wildkat football team started NCC play with a 66-7 win over Marion this past weekend. After a storm moved in Friday, we finished the game Saturday afternoon. On offense we once again had a pair of 100-yard rushers. Jeron Grey 139 yards and three TDs and Bo Baker had 117 yards and two TDs. Jordan Holloman rushed for 75 yards and two TDs. Kyle Wade was 4-for-9 passing for 53 yards and one TD; Cory Shrock was on the receiving end of the TD throw. On defense the Kats were led in tackles by Brevin Beard. Noah Hurlock, DeShaun Barbary and Beard all had quarterback sacks in the game. Jack Perkins had an interception, and Keyon Washington recovered a fumble. The Wildkat defense was dominate all game, only giving up one rushing yard. The second team was in and gave up the score in the fourth quarter. Jordan Rawlins had his second kickoff return for a touchdown in two weeks to round out the scoring for Kokomo. This week we take on McCutcheon for a huge NCC game. We play at 7:00 pm at Walter Cross Field. Coach Colby Our Lady Wildkats (5-3) traveled to Bloomington for the Hoosier Cup to reflect their 2013 performance. A long bus ride, high heat, and perhaps some pre-tournament jitters seemed to keep the Kats distracted from finding their play in the first game, but Day 2 provided double wins to finish second in their bracket again for 2014. FRIDAY The Lady Wildkats’ first game yielded their only loss, to Bedford North Lawrence by a score of 2-1. With Holly Stewart recording the Kats’ lone goal, Cathy Skaggs assisted the goal and recorded nine saves. The Lady Kats trailed most the game only to tie it 1-1 with three minutes left. Another BNL goal followed one minute later. SATURDAY Our Lady Wildkats started out very live and well in the first half of Game 1 taking a 2-0 lead by half. However, the Lady Kats seemed to have really lost pace in the second half and resorted to bad habits and brute force to tie the second half 0-0 for an overall 2-0 win over Evansville Harrison. Juliana del Bosque and Aaryan Morrison recorded a goal each, while Taylor Coram had one assist and Cathy Skaggs had four saves. Game 2 gave a very easy pace for the Lady Kats to clear the bench and give all players some varsity experience. In their 4-1 win over Martinsville, the Lady Kats led 4-0 by half. Cathy Skaggs had four saves with another tournament assist. Taylor Sparling had two goals while Taylor Coram and Katelyn Van Horn each had one. Aubrey Whiteman had an assist. Though our Lady Kats scored more tournament goals than each of the other three teams, jitters and the lack of choices proved to be the second team in the bracket again this year. However, overall the ladies showed promising progress and growth while coming back from a less desirable performance on Day 1. With a hard week of games ahead of us our Ladies could use your support this week to help keep their focus and press on! Go Kats! Coach Duggins The Lady Kats headed over to Lafayette on Saturday for the Lady Broncho Invite. We didn't do as well as we could have as a team, but we did have some individual accomplishments. We finished with a 452, good enough for 16th place. Individually, Sydney Murphy led the team with a 97, followed by Lucy Mavrick with a 101. Kaila Stiner shot a 109, Shiloh Mussial shot a 145 for her first 18-hole competition, and Sabrina McAmis came in with a 164. We have a busy week this week. We have a match Wednesday against Eastern and Western, travel to Noblesville on Thursday, and have the NCC tournament on Saturday. Until next tee time, Coach Carpenter Sophomore Cinnamon Andrews turned in a solid performance with a 23:06.8 clocking for the 5K (3.1 miles) to pace the Lady Wildkats at the Marion Invitational Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan University. In her first outing for the 2014 season, Cinnamon placed 121st among the 182 runners in the Varsity Purple (Big Schools – over 1,000 enrollment) race. Fort Wayne Carroll won the team championship, while freshman Tyler Schwartz of DeKalb earned the individual championship in 18:38.9. In the all-comers (both Gold and Purple divisions) jayvee girls race at Indiana Wesleyan, the Kokomo ladies showed tremendous improvement as all four Lady Wildkats finishers recorded seasonbest performances and three Kokomo runners shaved almost three minutes off their season-best times. Sophomore Abbie O’Keefe celebrated her 16th birthday by running an all-time best performance with a clocking of 27:49.4 for the 5K race, while freshman Natalie Hatt bettered the 30-minute barrier for the first time in her running career by covering the 3.1 miles in 29:15.6. Senior Claire Harbaugh lowered her previous season best by more than three minutes with a 30:16.9 clocking, while sophomore Jessica Estep improved her season best by almost three minutes with a 30:40.6 clocking. Lady Wildkat junior Elizabeth Curtis, who is on the injured reserve list, supported the Kokomo team by timing 2-mile splits and cheering for the Lady Wildkats. Coach Barnes Sixth-ranked Brebeuf edged # 4 Fort Wayne Carroll to win Saturday's Marion Invitational. In 90 % humidity, six ranked teams battled it out at Indiana Wesleyan University on one of Indiana's fastest cross country courses. Our Kokomo boys cut 78 seconds off their team time and had all 15 runners set season bests. Placing 18th of 26 teams at one of the best organized invitationals, the Kat harriers were led by Ethan Sharp, who placed 26th with a fine 16:28 personal best. Colten Pearce ran 18:05, Justin Taflinger recorded an 18:09, Jadyn Whitehead clocked an 18:33, Logan Hawk had an 18:35, and Coy Brandon finished with an 18:54. Conner Wood ended our scoring, running 19:06. Our JVs finished 15th of 52 teams entered and had tremendous improvement. Max McHaney was our first finisher, placing 86th in 19:03. Corey Dea ran 19:59, Hanif Burnett clocked a 20:35, and Nigel Lenoir recorded a 20:42. Andrew Pervez finished in 21:24, Kaleb Smith crossed the line in 21:35, and Farod Knox had a 21:52. Zane Padfield cut 73 seconds off his best and ran 24:12. Everyone was focused and had superb efforts. We travel to Maconaquah on Saturday for another big invitational. Coach Stucker The Kats defeated Center-Grove 4-1 to advance to the Lebanon Tournament championship game. Phillip Heilman scored two goals for the Kats, with Keagan James and Andrecus Eddington each adding a goal. In the championship game with the host Tigers, Kokomo took the early 20 lead on a pair of goals by Robbie Lambert that the Lebanon goalkeeper couldn't stop. The Kats controlled the entire first half with Lebanon struggling to gain any momentum. The Tigers scored two quick goal after intermission to tie the game, and the Kats lost in the championship on a PK shoot out 5-6 (1-0). It was a great defensive effort by S.A. Dunn and Kensuke Oguri. Man of the Match Oguri stated, "we should have won the championship, but we will do better next time because we are a good team." The Kats are now 5-4 and will play Tuesday at home. Coach Idukabo Kokomo hosted the 1st annual VolleyKats JV Extravaganza on Saturday. Covenant Christian (Indianapolis) won the tournament with a record of 3-1. Kokomo also finished 3-1, but Covenant Christian won the head-to-head battle to win the five-team tournament. JV Coach Ostapa The Kokomo football team led Marion 36-0 with 3:00 to go in the second quarter Friday night before the game was postponed because of lightning. This was Kokomo’s North Central Conference opener, and the Kats have now won seven of their last 10 league openers. The last time Kokomo scored 60 points in a football game before Saturday was in a 62-13 win over Muncie Central on September 3, 2011. The 66 points scored by Kokomo over the weekend against Marion was the second most ever scored by a team in the series. Kokomo put up 70 points against the Giants on September 4, 2009. Although the Wildkats had the convincing victory, Marion actually had an advantage in time of possession. The Giants had the pigskin for 24:40 compared to the Kats’ 23:20. Kokomo scored on each of its first five possessions in the game. The Wildkats had 396 yards of total offense to just 142 for the Giants. Kokomo’s 343 yards rushing were the fewest by the Kats in their three games this season. Marion’s touchdown came on a 67-yard run. The Giants’ 31 other carries netted them a total of just one yard.
