3 Kat Chatter Wednesday, August 17, 2016 Thought for the day “One of the trademarks of a champion is that he can outlast you.” Lou Brock Today’s Athletic Events SPORT OPPONENT Golf (Girls V) Tennis (Boys V) Soccer (Girls V) Taylor Alexandria Oak Hill LOCATION TIME Kokomo Country Club 3:30 PM KHS 5:00 PM Oak Hill 6:00 PM THE WILDKAT Girls Cross Country The Lady Kats participated in the Northwestern combo. Volleyball Kokomo 3, Western 1 Boys Soccer Eastern 6, Kokomo 1 The Kokomo High School girls' cross country team opened up their season Tuesday evening at the Northwestern Combination. Kokomo was led by a 7th place finish in the three and four race by Brianna Roberts with a time of 14:43. I was very proud of Bri’s performance as she cut over 30 seconds off of her time from last season’s race. She really went out there and competed; this was a good indication of everything coming together for her early this season. In the one and two race, Cinnamon Andrews finished 14th with a time of 15:51. Cinnamon ran a gutsy race through an injury and is still working herself into racing shape. In the next couple of weeks, I expect Bri and Cinnamon to push each other, compete, and bring the best out of each other to really drop their times over the next few meets. Our final runner of this evening was Corinth Oglesby in the five, six, seven plus race finishing in 29th place with a time of 21:31. Corinth showed drive, perseverance, and a lot of heart. She has a great attitude and it really rubs off on the young runners on our team. I'm pleased with the level of competitiveness that this young team displayed in our season opener. We are looking to get healthy throughout the remainder of the week so that we may have an even better performance this Saturday at Logansport. Coach Salinas The Kokomo VolleyKats welcomed our friends from Western to KHS to open up the 2016 season Tuesday evening. Both teams started a bit sluggish but got into a rhythm as the Ladies in Red and Blue took the match 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15. Our girls were just too much at the net for our opponents as we overwhelmed the Panthers with our attack. The Lady Panthers fought hard and dug up a bunch of balls, but we had some strong serving to go with our offensive barrage that allowed us to come out on top. Junior Setter Kylee Lauderbaugh passed out 50 assists and had four aces leading the offense. Lauderbaugh's consistent setting and solid decision making were major factors in the win. Senior Brooke Smith flew through the air to down 13 balls and gather 12 digs. Junior Middle Courtland Cottle played a highly efficient match with 12 kills, three blocks, and six digs. Senior Middle Deztanie Gaines controlled the net with nine kills, four blocks, and six digs. Junior Opposite Madison Wood hit .500 on the night with four kills and three aces. Junior Skye Richards got three balls down, and sophomore Alliyah Hochstedler made some great plays defensively in the back row. Our ball control is improving and our hitting percentage was solid versus Western, but we will have to serve more aggressively, and continue to get better passing if we are to achieve our goals. In the near future, we would like a strong showing in the Kokomo Invitational this Saturday at KHS. We welcome eight other teams from all around the state for a day of exciting volleyball. We start at 9:00 a.m. with Frankfort followed by a match up with powerhouse Hamilton Southeastern. We will play two more matches in the afternoon. We would love to see you come out and cheer for the VolleyKats! Coach Watson The Wildkats hosted county rival Eastern to open the 2016 season. After an even opening 15 minutes in which both teams created chances to score and worked to hold possession and penetrate, the Comets decisively took the upper hand, scoring four first-half goals in the final 25 minutes of the half. Sophomore goalkeeper Max Higgins and senior goalkeeper Caleb Cook combined in the first half to try and slow down the Comet attack. Senior midfielder Keagan James, junior midfielder Bryceton Welch, sophomore midfielder Connor Scheiman, and freshman midfielder Quincy Armstrong worked to create goal-scoring chances, and in the second half, the Wildkats did score, with James netting his first tally of the season, scoring a penalty kick. The Kats have to rebound from the 6-1 loss quickly as they host Western (1-0-0) Thursday. Players of the game are James (1 goal) and senior back Garreck Durato.
