ShopLocalSaveLand.com HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Good for You, Good for Our Community arms are a rich part of our local culture and history. Their rolling hills, fields, barns and silos are fixtures of our region’s scenic rural landscape. F Farms 1. A & J Vegetables/Klingle Farms 2818 Hamilton E (Business Rte 209), Stroudsburg PA 18360 t: 570-424-2647 e: [email protected] Baked goods, eggs, honey, syrup, jam, pumpkins and vegetables. Open June through Nov, Mon through Sat, 10AM to 6PM; Sun 10AM to 5PM. WIC Farming families have passed their way of life on through generations. They have worked their land and sustained our community by providing fresh and healthy produce, meats and dairy products. But that way of life — and the land that makes it possible — has become threatened by giant factory farms, easy access to pre-packaged food produced around the world, and intensifying pressure caused by surges in our region’s population and industrial development. 2. Annie’s Acres 168 Brink Rd, Saylorsburg, PA 18353 t: 610-357-3583 e: [email protected] w: AnniesAcresFarm.com We are a small family farm that grows things the old-fashioned way — without the use of chemicals or pesticides. Our chickens are pastured and fed an all-natural diet (no hormones or antibiotics). Organically grown fruits, berries and vegetables, and all-natural brown eggs. Open April through Nov, noon to 6PM. Closed Mon. Come see how and where your food is grown and visit with the animals. When working the land is no longer a viable economic choice, local farmers are often forced to make land use decisions that will ultimately change the area’s rural character. Without our working farms we will have lost a significant part of what makes life special here in Monroe, Pike, Wayne and Sullivan counties. 3. The Anthill Farm 1114 Beech Grove Rd, Honesdale, PA 18431 t: 570-352-6089 e: [email protected] w: theanthillfarm.com A small family farm located six miles outside of Honesdale. We raise eight acres of mixed vegetables and tend 10 acres of immature fruit and nut orchards. We are deeply committed to organic farming practices and strive to provide healthy food to our local community. Open Mon, Tues, Wed and Sat during the day. CNG Buying fresh vegetables, herbs, fruits, meats, cheeses, or eggs direct from local farmers is an easy way to eat healthier and an effective way to protect land. Every purchase you make at a local farmers’ market or farm stand infuses our economy with the resources necessary to sustain our rural quality of life. Your choice to buy local — through the farm markets and farms listed in Shop Local Save Land — can help farming to remain a vibrant part of our local economy and will assure that our valuable farmlands remain for us and for the benefit of future generations. 4. PASA Pike County Agricultural Land Preservation Program The Pike County Commissioners are committed to assisting our county’s farming community by acknowledging the importance of preserving and maintaining agricultural lands as a valued economic, cultural and natural resource. The Pike County Agricultural Land Preservation Program helps farmers hold on to their land and continue their farm operations. Financial opportunities are available to farmers through the purchase of agricultural conservation easements so that your farmland remains in agriculture permanently. Other benefits exist for farmers who want to enroll their lands in an Agricultural Security Area. Since the program’s inception in 2007, Pike County has preserved 98 acres of farmland and has worked with four municipalities to enroll over 6,700 acres into Agricultural Security Areas. Working the fields and mucking stalls is tough enough… Why worry about the financial future of the farm too? Consider preserving your farm today. The program also funds open space preservation through land acquisitions or purchase of conservation easements from willing landowners. As of January 2012, the program had funded the purchase of almost 1,100 acres for municipal parks, open space and public recreation. It is working to secure another 750 acres for recreation, and to place a conservation easement on 850 acres for drinking water protection and wildlife corridor expansion. It has helped to protect more than 775 acres with a conservation easement. These lands, which remain in private ownership, protect our natural resources and enhance the scenic values that folks have come to love. The program also offers financial assistance to landowners wishing to donate a conservation easement. These events led to the development and adoption of a countywide open space plan and formation of the open space advisory board, responsible for assisting and advising the County Commissioners on development and implementation of the Monroe County Open Space Program. Key to the program’s success were financial incentives for each of the 20 municipalities to develop local multimunicipal open space and recreation plans. The board also developed requirements for utilizing bond funds. Since the referendum, the commissioners have allocated additional funding to continue open space efforts and to leverage an estimated $75 million in state funding to preserve approximately 12,000 acres of open space and 6,000 acres through the agricultural land preservation program. The scenic Pocono Mountains offer visitors convenient, easily accessible mountain, river, lake and place-in-the country travel experiences that create a lifetime of cherished memories with friends, family and colleagues. The region encompasses 2,400 square miles of rolling mountain terrain, breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls, thriving woodlands and 170 miles of winding rivers. Winter offers guests the opportunity to ski, snowboard, snow tube or snowshoe through wonderlands featuring over 163 ski trails. The Pocono Mountains are located within driving distance of most major east coast cities. This region, teeming with history, offers year-round cultural tours and art exhibitions, abundant antiquing, brand-name shopping and a full calendar of festivals showcasing heritage, music and local food. Even the most discerning traveler will find comfortable accommodations, which offers an eclectic mix of resorts, distinctive properties and quaint, country inns and bed and breakfasts. The PMVB values preservation of the natural environment and character of our region’s small towns, responsible development, consumer centricity and genuine hospitality. The bureau supports local, county and state open space and agricultural preservation programs and environmental education. Hotel Fauchère Executive Chef and General Manager Christopher Bates has a passion for food that is reflected in the Hotel Fauchère’s organic garden, foraging program and support of local farmers. “Our menu begins when the farmers bring in our food,” he says. “In a world where people have forgotten what a garden is and where our food comes from, my goal is to create dishes that reintroduce these elements into people’s lives.” Chef Bates’ organic garden — growing over 100 varieties of produce and herbs — is part of hotel co-owner Richard Snyder’s Foster Hill Farm; foraging is pursued there and at co-owner Sean Strub’s Dwarfskill Preserve (protected by a Delaware Highlands Conservancy easement). Hotel guests may visit either property and have exclusive access to the preserve’s Private Mile, a naturally reproducing trout stream. Wild edibles utilized by the culinary team include dandelion, clover, birch branches, sassafras roots, sheep sorrel, oxalis, and a variety of mushrooms. The hotel is a part of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux, a global association of exceptional culinary destinations. In addition to 16 casually elegant guest rooms, venues include its brasserie-style Bar Louis; the Delmonico Room, offering prix fixe chef’s tasting menus; and the adjacent Pâtisserie Fauchère, providing fresh artisan breads and an array of pastries and desserts. “Working farm to table spurs our creativity,” notes Executive Pastry Chef Benjamin Youngquest. “When something comes into season we work with it. There is no shipping, holding or artificial ripening. It’s five minutes from our farm to the restaurant and 30 feet to the table.” Hotel Fauchère 401 Broad St, Milford, PA 18337 t. 570-409-1212 e.
