E Q U I P P I N G I N T E R P R E T E R S T O E F F E C T I V E LY C O M M U N I C AT E T H E M E S S A G E Mary Alice Gardner Elizabeth Gardner Noah Buchholz Ricky Smith Jeff Jackson From a cross-cultural home (his father is hearing and his mother is Deaf and all six of his brothers and sisters are either Deaf or hard-of-hearing), Noah is a Deaf performing artist. He went to both a Deaf school and a public school and was the only Deaf student at Wheaton College, where he holds a BA in Ancient Languages and Theological Studies. He is currently pursuing an MDiv at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is the Executive Director of Deaf International, pastor of a Deaf church in New Jersey and is a Certified Deaf Interpreter. He and his wife, Alyssa, live in Princeton, New Jersey. Saturday evening featured presenter Elective workshop leader Presenting: “ASL Literature: The Beauty of Deaf Culture” Elizabeth’s zeal for life and sign language is evident in the fact that she “lives” in the language. She is an educational interpreter in Illinois and also since 2005, has been an interpreter at Willow Creek Community Church, one of the largest churches in the United States. Elizabeth graduated from Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri, with a Bachelor of Music Ministry and received her Sign Language Interpreting Certificate from William Rainey Harper College. You will love getting to know Elizabeth and seeing her passion for communicating with Deaf people. Saturday Morning featured presenter Elective workshop leader Presenting: “Praise God in His Sanctuary: Approaching Elements of a Worship Service with a Fresh Perspective” Mary Alice’s resume is long and impressive. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Cincinnati Bible College and Seminary, now Cincinnati Christian University. She graduated Cum Laude. She completed the Interpreter Training Program at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, and received a Master of Arts in Linguistics from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Since 1999, she has been the director and professor of the Deaf Communications Department at Ozark Christian College. Ricky has always spoken with a “Silence that Speaks Louder than Words”; communicating in a unique way that transcends languages, cultures and disabilities. Ricky has led an amazing life and has been blessed with remarkable life experiences that he will share with you through what his students have coined “RSL”.... Ricky Sign Language! Ricky Smith has lived “outside of the box” and looks forward to sharing his love for life in the Lord with conference participants and their guests. Jeff has been involved in Deaf ministries in Florida and California and overseas missions, including several trips to Haiti. He and his wife, Maura, have been married for 19 years. She, too, is Deaf and a native of the Dominican Republic. They have two hearing teenage sons. Click on the Out of the Box Conference logo to find all the conference information. Conference Location Registration and check-in will happen at Deaf Missions located in Council Bluffs, Iowa. All conference activities Thursday, Friday and Saturday will take place at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. FCC is located just minutes from Deaf Missions. You will receive directions when you check-in on Thursday afternoon. The location for Sunday’s conference events will be announced. You can find the address and directions to Deaf Missions on the website. Housing Attendees are responsible for their own housing. We would like to recommend choosing one of our two conference hotels. The Microtel Inn and Suites in Council Bluffs is offering a conference rate of $70 plus tax for all room types. To make reservations, call 712-2562900 or 800-771-7171. You must state you are with the Deaf Missions Conference. At this time, we do not have a way to make reservations online with this hotel. The SpringHill by Marriott in Council Bluffs is offering a rate of $89 plus tax. You can call the hotel directly at 712-256-6500 or you can choose the link on the Deaf Missions website to make your reservations online. When calling, ask for the Deaf Missions group rate. It is of utmost importance that you make your reservations at your earliest convenience! Our room blocks will start being released the middle of March and/or have the potential to sell out. At this time, our conference shuttles will only run to these two hotels. Roommates: If you are seeking a roommate for the conference to help offset expenses, please e-mail the conference coordinator at [email protected] and your information will be shared with others who are also seeking roommates. Deaf Missions will not assign roommates, but simply assist you in making connections. Transportation Those flying should plan to use Eppley Airfield in Omaha, NE (15–20 minutes from Deaf Missions). Deaf Missions and the Council Bluffs Convention and Visitors Bureau will be providing an airport shuttle to and from the airport to the conference hotels. It is your responsibility to contact Deaf Missions prior to April 1, 2013 with flight times and information ([email protected]). Deaf Missions will also provide limited shuttle service from the conference hotels to the conference site each morning, during dinner time, and for the evening feature. With this in mind, you may find that you do not need a rental car. Accessibility The featured morning workshops, as well as the evening activities, will be interpreted for equal access for hearing and deaf attendees. Afternoon elective workshops will be presented in the language of choice of the presenter. Attendees will choose workshops according to their skill and comfort level. Elective workshops presented in ASL will not be voice interpreted for hearing attendees. Elective workshops presented in spoken English will be interpreted upon request for deaf attendees. Sunday will be an ASL immersion day — just as the name implies, no voice interpreting will be offered. If you have any low-vision interpreting needs, please note this on your registration and/or let us know at your earliest convenience. Call for Interpreters For the conference, we will need numerous skilled interpreters to make the conference accessible to all. Interpreters are needed for each day of the conference. If you would like to volunteer for one workshop or much of the conference, please take a minute to fill out the online interpreter application which is part of the online registration system. Our conference coordinator will work with our interpreter coordinator to communicate with you and make appropriate assignments. Conference interpreters are offered a small discount to a fully-comped registration, depending on the quantity of time you are serving. If you choose to pay the registration fee prior to assignments being made, a full or partial refund will be offered to you. CEUs Available! By attending all parts of the conference from Thursday evening through Saturday evening, you can earn 1.85 CEUs! Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is our sponsor for RID CEUs. The Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for Continuing Education Activities.
