Alberta Ballet is singular in its place in the arts of Alberta after 45 years of solid achievement. It is our province’s standard bearer incorporating Alberta’s name into its own, and reflecting Alberta’s deep values in its art and displaying those values accross Canada and into the world. Alberta ballet,, love lies bleeding. Photographer charles hope front and back cover alberta ballet, swan lake photographer paul mcgrath message from the chair The School of Alberta Ballet has in many respects not only grown–it has re-invented itself–the school now not only offers a rigorous and highly prized ballet education in western Canada, but it also offers an academic program that is also demanding of academic excellence. Growth and change require a great deal of investment which must be managed by all the partners that make up the team of the Company and the Board is pleased to report that we have an excellent team: the leadership of Martin Bragg and Jean Grand Maître, the artistic and technical excellence of our dancers, the competence and resilience of management and staff, the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, and the commitment of our audiences, donors, sponsors and government. It is all these team members pulling together and working towards the same goal that has allowed us this phenomenal growth. Growth comes from hard work, investment and patience! “Growth” is the word that most describes the past year at Alberta Ballet. The Company has been on a remarkable growth trajectory – no facet of the Company’s operations did not grow or change. The Company and our artists have grown artistically to the point that we were able to provide our audiences with top notch performances such as Swan Lake as demanded by Kirk Peterson. The Swan Lake production received national accolades and set the standard for traditional ballet within the company. The national and international reputation of Alberta Ballet grew because of our investments in the portrait ballets and Swan Lake. Swan Lake received favourable national media attention because of its excellence. We have had interest from Europe and the United States for our product and received considerable national media and audience attention for Love Lies Bleeding because of our investments in the Vancouver and Toronto markets, as well as participation in the White Iron/CBC production, in the past year. Company administration growth was reflected by the high calibre of talent that the Company has been able to attract over the past year. We welcomed Alison Geskin to the Development and Communications portfolios and we have seen rapid change in all matters related to our outreach to audiences, donors, sponsors and volunteers. 1 Alberta ballet, swan lake mariko kondo photographer charles hope The Board is pleased to report that the Company continues its operations in stable financial health. The Audit Committee chaired by Jeff Fortin has provided continuing vigilant oversight. The financial stewardship exhibited by management has ensured that despite having investment expenses for the school and needing to write down expenses related to previous projects, the Company continues to operate in a very strong cash flow position. The board is pleased to report: Implementation of the Strategic Plan was commenced and significant headway was made in the past year in achievement of strategic goals – many goals were met or exceeded. An extended residency in Edmonton was very successful in heightening the profile of the Company in Edmonton. The Academic and Residential components of the School were implemented and tested, evaluated, and re-evaluated leading to adjustments being made throughout the year which continue on an on-going basis in order to ensure the School develops a sustainable model. The Company undertook a massive facilities needs assessment study as well as organizational readiness study which led to a Fundraising Feasibility Study (currently ongoing) in order to ascertain what Alberta Ballet will require for facilities in the future and what planning and fundraising will need to be done in order to achieve the facilities requirements. The Board wishes to acknowledge and thank the following individuals for their tireless volunteer contributions as Board members and Chairs of Committees: Judy Cosco, Vice-Chair & Chair of the Development Sub-Committee Edmonton Justice Kristine Eidsvik, Past Chair Dawn McDonald, Chair Development Committee Jeff Fortin, Chair Audit Committee Frank Molnar, Secretary Eva Klein, Chair H.R. Committee Rhondda Grant, Chair Governance & Nominating Committee Jim Gibson, Chair School Committee Colin Jackson, Chair Facilities Committee The Board would like to recognise and thank the following retiring Board members; our deepest appreciation and heartfelt thanks to Karen Lynch and Jim Murphy for all their hard work and efforts on both committees of the board and the board. The Board wishes to thank Jean Grand Maître, Artistic Director, and the dancers for the poetry in ether that we saw in productions as divine as Swan Lake, as avante garde as Dump the Physical Memory and the soon to be classic of our repertoire Love Lies Bleeding. The Board also thanks Martin Bragg, Executive Director, and the staff of Alberta Ballet, who have been instrumental in moving the company forwards along the trajectory of the strategic plan – to in Martin’s words, “conquer the world”. The Company looks forward to continued growth in the coming year, and of course the ever inevitable change that comes with growth, and we look forward to working with you all to achieve it. Balletluhah! On behalf of the Board of Directors, Gordon Sombrowski, Chair 2011/12 Alberta Ballet Annual Report 2 message from the artistic director Ballet of Canada for the very first time in a mixed bill and by presenting the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in a never before seen aesthetic with their highly modern interpretation of Alice in Wonderland, aptly entitled Wonderland. While our patrons enjoyed our two visiting companies, Alberta Ballet toured its popular production of Love Lies Bleeding to Vancouver and Toronto. The aim of this tour, aside from further developing our brand across the country, was to bring this full-length ballet to new and important markets, and to create new partnerships for future international touring. We were extremely successful in strengthening our reputation outside of Alberta, attracting new investors, receiving public and critical acclaim, and establishing our organization as a powerful creative force. Immediately following this tour, the CBC filmed Love Lies Bleeding at the Banff Centre which was later aired, prime-time right across the country, twice within a 6 month period. In December we returned home to perform our acclaimed production of The Nutcracker once again in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria. This production’s success with family audiences has also enabled the company to begin regular touring to Ottawa’s National Arts Center. Alberta Ballet’s 45th season was a year of growth and spectacular achievement. Our 2011-2012 season celebrated Canadian dance, design and music in all its shapes and forms. Choreographies by Shawn Hounsell, Crystal Pite, James Kudelka and Jean Grand-Maître were featured alongside the compositions of Canadian composers Owen Belton, Davidson Jaconello, John Estacio and Brian Current. As well, the stunning work of more than 15 Canadian designers was highlighted in each of our productions throughout the season. We began our season by continuing to develop audiences’ taste for contemporary repertoire by presenting the National 3 2011/12 Alberta Ballet Annual Report In the New Year we revived my production of Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella, created by a design team from across Canada. This was our third series of performances of this ballet and once again the sales were excellent and the response was extremely positive. In mid-winter, Alberta Ballet experienced a historic moment which redefined the company’s core identity: our first presentation of a full length staging of Swan Lake. This huge challenge was met with panache and integrity and was expertly rehearsed by the American choreographer Kirk Peterson. All who attended expressed their admiration and respect for our organization’s growth and the fact that Alberta’s ballet company and school have matured to such a high level that staging such classics as Swan Lake, Giselle or Sleeping Beauty is now within the realm of the attainable for us. We have become a company that can now tackle the great classics with excellence while still creating exciting and internationally acclaimed contemporary repertoire. This new artistic direction will enable us to attract and retain better dancers, to absorb the highly positive financial returns of such beloved ballets into our own operational budgets, to keep these great classics alive and to strengthen our relations with our school immeasurably. In March, while the women were busy rehearsing our first ever production of Swan Lake, the men of the company were commissioned to create a full length work all on their own. They were given carte blanche to create the lighting, the music, the costumes and the choreography. For this unique occasion company principal dancer Yukichi Hattori created his fourth ballet for us, Dump the Physical Memory. The ballet was presented in our refitted studios and its 12 performances were sold out in four days only. It was a smashing success and it offered our audiences a completely different way to appreciate dance. Finally we ended our season with an extremely well attended series of encore performances of Love Lies Bleeding, a ballet which attracts new audiences, inspires a new generation of fans to come to the ballet, financially enables us to hire the dancers for an extra 6 weeks at the end of a season and to develop our profile around the world. We also continued to reach out to thousands of new and younger audiences with our very popular student matinees and with our rural touring of 15 high schools in more than 13 towns across northern Alberta. It is inspiring and invigorating to realize that Alberta Ballet has continued to grow and to flourish even today during these harsh economic times. With a 46 week contract and 31 dancers, this coming season is the longest in our history. We are now producing 7 different programs a year in partnership with an ever growing list of prestigious co-producers and stakeholders from across the country and from all artistic disciplines. We are presenting dance in large and small venues, on television and on film. our donors are increasing in numbers and finally, that our reputation is nurturing a whole new audience for ballet and for dance in general right across western Canada. We understand that we are a not for profit arts organization; nevertheless, we also accept that we must be a successful business to survive. Financial sustainability must be at the forefront of all of our strategies however protecting and preserving the intrinsic qualities that shape our artistic identity is always at the core of our efforts and vision as well. The three main philosophical pillars that support all future artistic planning are: evolving the art form, growing and cultivating our audiences, and establishing an environment which profoundly inspires all artists who join us. Alberta Ballet looks forward to a new year of disseminating dance right across the province in our two city home base of Edmonton and Calgary, and collaborating with the local orchestras and communities to further nourish their knowledge and love of dance. Respectfully submitted, Jean Grand-Maitre, Artistic Director Most of all, we are feeling empowered by the knowledge that the audiences we are cultivating are expanding, that 2011/12 Alberta Ballet Annual Report 4 message from the executive director Company can perform to the highest artistic level. Alberta Ballet carries no debt and has an accumulated surplus of over $1,000,000. Friends, To say that the last year for our ballet company was tremendous would be an understatement. Two years after Sarah and I moved to Alberta, Alberta Ballet and the School of Alberta Ballet have both experienced real growth and the Company and the School have achieved new and important milestones in their history. As we complete the 45th anniversary of Alberta Ballet and the 20th year of the School of Alberta Ballet both parts of our Company have begun a new strategic plan for growth and stability that will see us become one of the most important and relevant ballet companies and schools in North America. This past season saw a number of firsts. We toured nationally twice with both The Nutcracker and Love Lies Bleeding. The audience response to LLB in Vancouver and Toronto was equal to the ecstatic response the production received when it debuted in Alberta. The new initiative of our School to now offer both academic training and residency opportunities will now position our school as a world class training institution for dance. Our production of Swan Lake, the first in our history, proves that our 5 2011/12 Alberta Ballet Annual Report A number of events took took place last year which led to the Company making a financial investment in our future. The investment of the Company to launch the academic and residency program at the School was a critical decision which the Company made to ensure that the School could be competitive on a national basis. Our tour of Love Lies Bleeding was important in order for us to begin to develop the national and international relationships which are a critical aspect in our strategy to move the Company onto another level of Ballet Companies in North America. While our run of the production in Vancouver was underwritten by our presenting sponsor, the engagement at the prestigious Sony Centre in Toronto was entered into only after a signed presenting agreement with a consortium of North American producers had been undertaken. After the performances had been put on sale, this consortium suffered some setups and terminated their contract with Alberta Ballet. The Company undertook a risk analysis and determined that the Toronto run was an important strategic step and that it should move forward with the Toronto engagement. These two investments in the future of the Company resulted in a deficit position this year. The Company has approved a strong financial budget for the upcoming fiscal year and plans to once again end the 2012/2013 season with a positive financial result. The 2011/2012 season was highlighted by the support we achieved from our amazing group of corporate and individual supporters. Alberta Ballet continued to expand our list of corporate supporters, as well as receiving the significant financial support of many individuals. All of us at Alberta Ballet are grateful for the generous and long time support of the many people who are committed to the ballet, and I would like to personally thank several individuals who chose to continue our expansion of personal underwriting. Special thanks to Dawn MacDonald and Dr. Grant Bartlett who supported Swan Lake, Judy and John Cosco who supported the Edmonton residency of Swan Lake, Heather and Murray Edwards who underwrote our Artist Fund Program, Sharon Watkins who has sponsored our Artistic Director for more than 10 years and Marco Simonelli who completely renovated the dancer lounge and dressing rooms for our Artists. Alberta Ballet is proud of our supporters and we will need to continue to count on them as we move forward with our ambitious plans for the future. Alberta Ballet continues to be supported by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Edmonton Arts Council and Calgary Arts Development. As the only arts organization in Alberta who call both Edmonton and Calgary home, we are proud to be ambassadors for both of our cities and our province on the world stage. The Company has plans to ensure that our ballet Company will have a provincial presence over the next year thanks to our Emerging Artists Program. I would like to thank our large group of volunteers this year, who helped on everything from our operations in Edmonton and Calgary, to our special events, especially the 2012 House and Garden tours in both cities. It has been an honour and a privilege to work with our most senior volunteers, our Board of Directors, led by our Chairman Gordon Sombrowski and our Vice Chair, Judy Cosco. Our Board is committed to the success of our Company and they are truly partners with the artists and the staff. I would like to thank and acknowledge my business and creative partner Jean Grand-Maître, who continues to create the most extraordinary art on our stages and the artists of Alberta Ballet who are at the core of the art we create. Our dancers continue to amaze me with their commitment, passion and athleticism, day in and day out. They are inspirational. Finally, I would like to thank and acknowledge our first class staff led by Murray Kilgour and Chris George at the School, Jennifer Faulkner in Edmonton, and Mitch Lavalee, Harry Paterson, Alison Geskin in Calgary. Martin Bragg, Executive Director the national ballet of canada Jordana Daumec photographer Cylla von Tiedemann 6 message from the school of alberta ballet highlights of the year to our students’ abilities to balance the intensity of ballet training with the rigours of academic excellence. Although we started the year with only 15 students in junior high, 10 students in residence and 95 students in the Professional Division, we have now grown to 60 students from grades 6 to 12, 35 students in residence and over 120 students in the Professional Division for the 2012-13 season. Examinations were again remarkable, examiners from England saying they never see the standard set by Shirley Agate-Proust anywhere else. Then there was the remarkable highlight of our Head of Junior School, Ashley McNeil, gaining the Cecchetti Diploma! Coached by Nancy Kilgour this result is one of those rare happening, reaching the pinnacle of training in the Cecchetti method. 7 alberta ballet, cinderella. hayna gutierrez. photographer Charles hope The past year has marked a pivotal point in the School of Alberta Ballet’s evolution. Artistically, we started the year performing with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra through Music In Motion and then continued the year dramatically with eight Professional Graduate students performing in Kirk Peterson’s production of Swan Lake dancing alongside the professionals of Alberta Ballet. We ended with one of those dancers, Laura Vande Zande, joining the Company as an apprentice for the upcoming year. In between those two highlights the School continued to dramatically progress. We have had more performances for the School than ever before, and all of them in theatres, no longer just relying on in house studio space. We finished the year with probably the best end of year performance with a new format, including a classwork demonstration. Actually, this wasn’t the end yet, we still had four summer courses over July and August with our Senior Summer School extended from three weeks to four weeks. Included was a very successful first Teachers Training Course led by Nancy Kilgour. And then to really finish we received the news that Nancy Kilgour was appointed to the “Order of Canada.” An exciting and highly successful year for sure! Having auditioned over 300 students from around the world this year, parents can now rest comfortably knowing that their children’s academic and residence needs can now be looked after. After 20 years of partnering with other academic schools and home-stay programs, we were finally able to launch our own junior high school, and in partnership with Mount Royal University, our own residence as well. Operating both academics and residence has meant so much not only to our growth and placement within the international ballet world, but more importantly, Murray Kilgour Artistic Director, School of Alberta Ballet school of alberta ballet students Chris George Managing Director, School of Alberta Ballet 2011/12 Alberta Ballet Annual Report 8 season highlights THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA WONDERLAND THE NUTCRACKER CINDERELLA World Premiere of Kirk Peterson’s Up Close: Dump the Physical Memory Celebrating 60 Glorious Years Calgary: Sept 15 - 17, 2011 Edmonton: Sept 19 - 20, 2011 The Greatest Rags to Riches Story Ever Told Calgary: Feb 9 - 11, 2012 Edmonton: Feb 17 - 18, 2012 Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet Calgary: Oct 27 - 29, 2011 Edmonton: Nov 4 - 5, 2011 SWAN LAKE Edmonton: Mar 23 - 24, 2012 Calgary: Mar 29 - 31, 2012 New Sugar Plum Parties & Family Friendly Show-times! Fundraising Events in 2012 did not match the success acheived in 2011 due to there being no gala events in either Edmonton or Calgary. Other Income increased significantly due to a one time gain on a sales tax reassessment and the commencement of residential rent from students of the School of Alberta Ballet. Note 2: As required under the A.P.A.S.F Funding Agreement the working capital reserve may be used for unforeseen operating deficits as defined in the agreement. The stated desire of the AFA is that the Company seek to maintain a working capital reserve equal to the funds advanced for this purpose under the Funding Agreement. During the year, $Nil (2011 - $Nil) of the Deferred Stabilization grant was recognized as revenue in accordance with the terms of the A.P.A.S.F Funding Agreement. Note 3: Deferred revenue represents ticket sales and tuition fees applicable to the 2012 - 2013 season and sponsorships and grants restricted to future expenditures. The components of deferred revenue are as follows: Ticket Sales $ Tuition fees Government grants Other 2012 $ 1,607,754 322,795 675,547 95,760 $ 2,701,856 2011 $ 1,615,286 158,658 658,831 68,800 $ 2,501,575 Note 4: Deferred contributions relate to restricted donations the Company receives that are related to the future development of specific productions. Funds raised have been invested in the television production “The Secret of the Nutcracker” and for the artistic creation of new stage productions of The Nutcracker, Love Lies Bleeding and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. During the year, the Company received donations of $43,750 (2011 – $137,500). 21 2011/12 Alberta Ballet Annual Report Note 5: The income derived from the externally restricted Crysta T. Lacey Fund is awarded annually to the School of Alberta Ballet to subsidize student tuition. The Board of Directors has internally restricted resources to establish the Ruth Carse Fund, the Barbara Moore Coffey Fund, the Education Fund and the New Repertoire Fund as well as to maintain a Working Capital reserve as required in relation to A.P.A.S.F. funding. The income derived from the Ruth Carse Fund fund is rolled into the fund until it reaches $10,000, after which it will be awarded to the School of Alberta Ballet. The income derived from the investments related to the Barbara Moore Coffey Fund and the Education Fund are awarded annually to the School of Alberta Ballet to subsidize student tuition. Former Alberta Ballet Board of Directors launched the entity which saw early success from a variety of supporters. Sadly, the founding Chairman, Garry C. Johnson, QC passed away but his family and friends generously contributed over $400,000 in his memory. The Foundation is refocusing its efforts to attract donors. It has introduced a planned giving program and board members are currently introducing the benefits of support to a number of individuals. The Foundation is a separate legal entity with its own Board of Directors but, like members of the company, hold a passion for Alberta Ballet. Foundation Members Chair Larry E. Clausen Barbara D.
