Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. - Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project
Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. Founder & President Rainbow PUSH Coalition 18 TH ANNUAL RAINBOW PUSH WALL STREET PROJECT ECONOMIC SUMMIT Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, SR. Founder & President Rainbow PUSH Coalition As we prepare for the 18th Annual Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project Economic Summit, I can’t help but reflect on the days in 1966, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. first gave me the assignment to focus on private sector expansion and inclusion. He believed, as I do, that no one should be excluded from the opportunities that our great country has to offer. Sadly, race and gender continue to be barriers to economic justice and parity today, nearly 50 years later. Now is the time to re-think, to re-imagine our approach. Those of us in the Civil Rights movement need to seize this propitious moment, this special moment in time, to re-frame the narrative. Historically, the Black middle class has grown as the result of government initiatives: government jobs, government contracts and sometimes government mandates. The private sector has been let off the hook. That is why the RainbowPUSH Coalition’s economic projects are placing renewed emphasis on research. The numbers do not lie. The Federal Reserve’s recent Survey on Consumer Finances on the wealth and income of African Americans is stark. One in three Blacks has less than $1,000 in wealth. For whites, the number is l in 9. Median wealth levels are $11,000 for Blacks and $134,000 for Whites. Much has been written about the “race” gap but there is no race gap. There is an investment gap, an historical legal gap and an imbalance of trade gap. These gaps have limited growth and development. There is no job we cannot perform, no goods or services we cannot provide, if given the opportunity to compete on a level playing field. The private sector must take the lead in making the marketplace more inclusive. The lock out of qualified Black employees and entrepreneurs must stop! Last spring, the Silicon Valley Project launched a tech initiative to “change the face of technology”. After pressuring large tech companies to release EEO-1 employment numbers, we are pleased that 25 companies have now done so. The number of Black and Hispanic employees is extremely low. But, I am encouraged that some of these corporations are acknowledging the need to become more diverse to compete in today’s global marketplace. We are committed to working with them to ensure greater minority participation, from the board level to the C suites to professional services. Intel is one of the few Silicon Valley companies that has routinely released its EEO-1 figures. I am happy to open this 18th annual WSP Economic Summit with a 1 on 1 fireside chat with Intel’s Chief Executive Officer Brian Krzanich, who will discuss Intel’s commitment to diversity. That is just the beginning of a summit filled with events and speakers we are very proud to present. Thank you for joining us as we continue to forge new partnerships and work to make life better for all of us. 18 Th Annual Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project Economic Summit 18 TH ANNUAL RAINBOW PUSH WALL STREET PROJECT ECONOMIC SUMMIT William D. Dickerson Chairman, Citizenship Education Fund Welcome to the 18th Annual Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project Economic Summit. On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Citizenship Education Fund, we are delighted that you have chosen to share your time, professional expertise and perspectives with us during this year’s Summit. We thank you for your participation this week as we come together to continue to dialogue and advance Dr. Martin Luther King’s vision for economic justice. Our theme this year, “Where Wall Street, Main Street & Silicon Valley Converge,” reflects the work of our organization’s economic projects to not only draw attention to diversity and economic parity challenges that our country’s most innovative sectors continue to grapple with, but also to present the inextricable case for economic growth and opportunities through the inclusion of women and people of color in every business operation and level. We hope that this year’s conference will enlighten and inspire you to be the change you want to see—to use, as a leader, your abilities to make inroads toward positive solutions, unity and equality. We extend our appreciation to all of our sponsors, distinguished guests, presenters and participants that have worked diligently to present a provocative forum for entrepreneurs, corporations, educators, and community, civic and faith leaders to network, reason together and form strategic business collaborations. Finally, I would like to thank our dynamic staff and wonderful volunteers. Your leadership and dedication is appreciated. 18 Th Annual Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project Economic Summit 18 TH ANNUAL RAINBOW PUSH WALL STREET PROJECT ECONOMIC SUMMIT John Mitchell Chief of Staff, Rainbow PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund Welcome and thank you for joining us for the 18th Annual Wall Street Project Economic Summit. This gathering is an opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and network with leaders from a wide range of industries. In particular, the summit’s theme “Where Wall Street, Main Street and Silicon Valley Converge” is the progression of key conversations and meetings started by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. in early 2014. It is our intent to continue to challenge corporate America to bridge the trading and opportunity gap with minority business owners and employees through greater inclusion. I hope that you will enjoy the dynamic speakers and sessions and take the time to discuss mutual concerns and needs and work together to try to develop a more inclusive workplace and society. I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of the entire Rainbow PUSH staff and especially the Wall Street Project team: Chee Chee Williams, Executive Director, Veronica Black, Northeast Regional Director of One Thousand Churches Connected, Rebecca Cruz, Director of Business Development, and Stephanie Bostic, Charly Productions, Event Management Company for producing this outstanding event. 18 Th Annual Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project Economic Summit 18 TH ANNUAL RAINBOW PUSH WALL STREET PROJECT ECONOMIC SUMMIT Chee Chee Williams Executive Director, Wall Street Project Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2015 Wall Street Project Economic Summit. I am honored to continue the work of challenging corporate America to expand and create equal economic opportunities for all people. In the past year, we have witnessed significant economic growth and prosperity in many segments of the economy. Yet, there is a continuing pattern of corporate culture and behavior that limits fair access and opportunities for women and minorities. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the technology industry. Thus, the theme of this year’s summit: “Where Wall Street, Main Street and Silicon Valley Converge.” Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. and our Silicon Valley office have led a tech initiative, begun last spring and aimed at “changing the face of technology.” Technology impacts just about everything we do and is certainly not limited to Silicon Valley. Last year, the Wall Street Project worked with our Silicon Valley office to forge partnerships with tech companies and minority financial services firms seeking business opportunities and we successfully advocated for their inclusion in the IPO’s of Facebook, Twitter and Alibaba. We are excited to continue developing relationships with the tech companies of New York’s Silicon Alley and strategic partners like Silicon Harlem and NY Tech Meetup to pursue a common goal of “changing the face of technology.” At last year’s WSP summit, we released a report titled: “Minority Inclusion in Debt Capital Markets:A ranking of Corporate Issuers.” This analysis produced a tiered ranking of corporations based on their commitment to and frequency of including minority broker dealers in debt capital markets activity from 2010 through 2013. Since the release, we have established dialogue with a number of firms who have now either used minority firms for the first time ever or are open to meeting with MWBE firms to further the discussion. We plan to issue an update on that report in 2016. At this year’s Summit, we will present the results of a new study, “The Challenge of MWBE Investment Firms: Managing Money for Corporate Pension Funds, Endowments & Foundations.” Asset Management is among the most profitable industries in the financial services sector. While there have been some gains in the management of public pension funds, the private sector retirement arena and that of endowments and foundation remains virtually closed to Black money managers. The study takes a look at the numbers and offers recommendations to encourage greater inclusion of MWBE asset managers. This year, we are happy to welcome the partnership of Black Enterprise Magazine and look forward to the Black Enterprise/Wall Street Project opening luncheon, where BE will present “The 40 Best Companies for Diversity.” The Wall Street Project has been a conduit for greater inclusion in corporate America since its inception in 1997. Our mandate remains clear. We must continue our efforts and work together to fight inequality and improve economic opportunities to ensure the growth of our communities. On behalf of the Wall Street Project staff, I would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to our co-chairs, sponsors, speakers, trade bureau members volunteers and guests. We need each and every one of you to ensure the success of our work. 18 Th Annual Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project Economic Summit 18 TH ANNUAL RAINBOW PUSH WALL STREET PROJECT ECONOMIC SUMMIT Citizenship Education Fund Offices National Headquarters 930 East 50th Street Chicago, IL 60615 (773) 373-3366 Office (773) 373-3571 Fax LaSalle Street Project Located within the National Office in Chicago, IL 60615 Peachtree Street Project 1280 W.
