Season Sponsors The Waiting Room 5 WELCOME From Bill In 2011, the Arts Club commissioned John Mann to write a piece for us. He was in the midst of creating a new album called The Waiting Room, based on his experiences when he took ill shortly after he appeared with us in our 2009 production of Les Misérables. During 2012’s ReACT series of stage readings, John performed his solo piece, including songs from his album. Shortly after that presentation, John reached out to playwright and previous collaborator Morris Panych to create a libretto incorporating the songs. A reading of the new piece was held last December. As director, Morris assembled the creative team, including his partner, designer Ken MacDonald, a cast of ten—some of whom have worked with Morris on several Arts Club shows in the past—including four musicians, with Musical Director Allan Rodger. Now we are proud to present the theatrical premiere of The Waiting Room. I don’t think it is an understatement to say this new work combines the talents of some of Canada’s most accomplished theatre artists. It is a privilege to have this work open the 37th Granville Island Stage season. Bill Millerd, Artistic Managing Director The Arts Club thanks Artistic Director’s Circle members and Play Patrons Bonnie & Terrence Gordon for pledging their personal support for this production. 6 The Waiting Room From Peter I first came to Canada 22 years ago on a two-week camping holiday (I was adventurous back then) that left from Seattle and ended up in Vancouver. It was an organized tour in a 12-seater van with all the camping equipment on the roof. And it was fun, with a great group of people from Europe, the US, and South America; the most spectacular mountains in the world; and an awesome driver who only played one band’s music: a band I had never heard of called Spirit of the West. And we loved them. We rotated the CDs, screamsang “Home for a Rest” endlessly, and danced to them, inebriated, by campfires. When we finally arrived in Vancouver, we insisted on a stop at a CD store (A & B Sound) so that we could buy this band’s music and take it home. I did my part by introducing my Australian friends to their uniquely Canadian sound. Fast-forward 12 years: I’m working at the Arts Club and we’re putting up one of my favourite productions of ours, Miss Saigon. And lo and behold, the Engineer was being played by none other than Spirit’s magnetic lead singer John Mann. What a thrill to meet the man whose voice had launched my Canadian odyssey—who, to me, really was the voice of Canada. It has remained a thrill ever since. John is such an interesting and bold performer and it’s been a privilege to watch him command our stages in various productions. He’s a Canadian treasure and part of our Arts Club family, so it is with great pride that we bring you this brand new work by John and Morris. To be able to take these artistic leaps of faith and present new works that we hope will become part of the Canadian canon is what the Arts Club is here for. So thank you for being here for us, for John Mann, and for the advancement of Canadian culture. Eh. Peter Cathie White, Executive Director ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic Director’s Circle today.
