ELEVENTH ANNUAL WALTER BUTLER
ALUMNI GOLF TOURNAMENT
T
he golf balls left long trails that
crisscrossed in the dew that covered
the practice green on October 7th at
the Breakers Ocean Course. Some of the
trails ended at one of the many practice
holes – but many did not. Luckily, Palm
Beach Day Academy’s annual Alumni Golf
Tournament is more about friendship and
community than it is about competitive
golfing.
Once the practice ended and the carts
were led off to a shot-gun start, Day
Academy parents, students, faculty,
alumni, trustees and friends enjoyed the
beautiful Breakers setting and a glorious

ast spring, when alumni returned for
the 75th Anniversary of the Walter H.
Butler Field Day, they gathered for a
reception on the evening before the big
event. The news about the merger of Palm
Beach Day School and The Academy of the
Palm Beaches was still new. As the alumni
rekindled friendships and looked through
the old photos and yearbooks that were
displayed at the reception, they tried to
imagine a twocampus version of
their old school. To
the faculty and
administrators
present, the alumni
were blunt. “You’re
not going to change
everything about our
school, are you?”
At other gatherings,
Academy of the Palm
Beaches parents and
students were asking
the same question about the school that
they regarded fondly. Six months ago, that
question was a lot harder to answer than it
is now.
In those early days of merger discussions,
many on both campuses knew what they
liked about their own school. Many on
both campuses were unfamiliar with the
other, but were still pretty sure that there
would be something about it that they
wouldn’t like. And then the meetings
started.
The Transition Advisory Council began to
work out details about the joining of two
schools. Faculty began to cross the bridge
for conferences and meetings. Families
from both campuses began to meet at the
Bulldog Store. And, two headmasters, both
used to being captains of their own ships,
began a partnership that is unique in all the

ne of the many benefits of a
hurricane-free season is the return
of Palm Beach Day Academy
Middle and Upper Schoolers to Carlin Park
in Jupiter for their traditional fall Outings.
For the past two years, the Outings have
been swept off the calendars to make up
for lost teaching time.
The Outings have always been meant to
serve as an opportunity for students to

enjoy a day of freedom together with their
classmates and teachers. This year, that
purpose was especially important as the
students and faculty from our two
campuses took the opportunity to get to
know each other better.
Palm Beach Day Academy is a “family”
school and therefore values its “family
time.”

independent school world. By the time
school started, skeptics were fewer.
Once the school year was underway
Upper Schoolers from both campuses
quickly bonded because they shared every
afternoon on the athletic fields and in the
arts classrooms. The faculties were brought
together socially and professionally and
discovered what they had in common.
Families from both campuses enjoyed an
afternoon assembly/pep rally followed by
the Annual Family Picnic.
Now, the Palm Beach Day Academy
family members involved in the day-to-day
reality of the merged schools see its
promise. They see that many of the much
discussed differences that loomed large six
months ago were imagined. They see
benefits where they once saw challenges.
And, many, who once stood to the side
waiting to see what would happen are
stepping forward now to contribute.
Prior to the merger, parents from both
campuses believed enough in the academic
program of their child’s school to pay
tuition for it. So, when a merger was
announced, questions about academic
changes were common, as were suspicions
that the “other school’s” methods would
dominate. In reality, the schools share the
same basic goals and methods. The
administrations and faculties both agree
that a rigorous, challenging academic
program, that is balanced with the personal
support that small classes allow, is the
method of Palm Beach Day Academy.
Now, two months into its first school year,
the two-campus version of our school is
unfolding gracefully. Both administrations
and faculties are finding ways to take
advantage of combined resources - exactly
the goal that the merger was meant to
attain.
Each day, for families at the school, many
initial concerns about the merger slip
further from the mind. The daily reality of
hundreds of
children,

year olds in

classes to the
9th Graders in
Mr. Greco’s

is simply too positive to ignore.
Fall Sports Report
T
his year we had a freshman volleyball
team. The team consisted of 6 girls,
Daisy Baker, Lizzie Connaughton,
Kenzie Feldman, Sophie Gotwald, Brenna
Sullivan, and Connery Cole.
We started the season working on our
overall skills, and by the end of the season,
at our last game, our serving was what
helped us end with a win. It was a great
way to end the season, after working hard.
Each player had something to contribute to
the team, while displaying leadership,
sportsmanship, and having fun. It was a
memorable season for the Bulldog volleyball
program and we hope the rest of the year for
these freshman girls is a memorable one here
at PBDA.
The 2006 edition of the Varsity Bulldog
Volleyball team finished the season with a
record of 4 wins and 5 losses. Our final
record is a tiny bit deceptive, because we
were competitive in every match. In several
cases we were a point or two away from
winning or sending a game into overtime.
As the season ended we started playing our
best volleyball of the year and finished with
two wins in a row.
One of the wonderful facets of this team
was the contributions every player made to
the program. We got superb serving from
Liza Johnson, Mallory Mills and Davina
Dresbach. Solid spiking and defensive plays
were given by Kelly
Okun, Olivia Meyer,
Kathryn Finsness, Yvana
Ahdab, Emma Richter
and Jaye Luntz.
Wonderful setting and
very good all around
play were given by Julia
Metzger, Abbey Coffman,
Nikki Connaughton and
Kendall Zahringer.
The coaches would like
to thank these girls for
their wonderful practice
attitudes. We eagerly
looked forward to every
practice because we knew
the girls would work
hard, would be extremely
coachable and most
importantly, were very
nice people. The Palm Beach Day School
Varsity Flag Football team’s season came to
a close in mid October with a victory
against Saint Jude Catholic School. The
season was somewhat unpredictable and
inconsistent with regard to the performance
of the team. We struggled against a few
opponents early in the season, but
rebounded nicely, playing hard fought
games against The Henderson School and
Saint Marks. Perhaps the most gratifying
part of the season was the way the team
grew together and began to understand the
team aspect of athletics and then worked
hard every day to improve upon it.
The team finished with a record of three
wins and five losses. Quarterbacks JT Closi
and Tim Stoops, who improved a
tremendous amount throughout the season,
led the team offensively. Running the ball
were J Wentley, Henry Jamison and Ben
Leone. The receivers were made up of Sean
Hayden, Bo Wulsin, Tanner
Torres as well as Nash
Larmoyeaux.
Defensively Jared Mesches,
Miguel Novoa, and Taylor
Aguirre, who returned two
interceptions for touchdowns,
led the team. Dash Zahringer
and William Rodbell played a
number of different positions
for the team on defense.

A Tribute to School Friend, Jack Wean
Jack Thompson
“G
entleman!”– a term one hears
increasingly seldom these days.
However one defines the term, Jack
Wean was the consummate gentleman.
Dictionaries should define the term from
his model.
Every PBDS alumnus alive today can
thank Jack Wean for his many contributions
to their alma mater – a board member since
the late 50’s, president of the board for
twenty six of those years, contributor of
millions, and father of four PBDS Bulldog
alumni. Most of you studied in the Wean
Library in the Wean building. His legacy
here enriched yours.
As a trustee, Jack often joked about the
traditional tongue-in-cheek criteria for a
board member. “Wit; wealth; and
wisdom,” he would quip, “at least, I bring
two of those!”
On his sudden death to cancer in August,
our school and I lost a great institutional
and personal friend. To him, our school
always came first. On the day of his
retirement as Board President, I asked him
to my office for a parting expression of
gratitude. We
talked, joked
and lingered
only to be
interrupted
by my
secretary who
told him that
he needed to
take an
important
phone call. I
heard, “Yes,
dear. Tell
them that I
Jack Wean
will call as
soon as I am
finished with Day School business.”
I learned, by politely apologizing for
keeping him from his task, that they were
waiting for him, in Pittsburgh, to
conference call his vote on who should be
the next President of Carnegie Mellon
University.
A consummate gentleman, who truly
loved and gave to our school.

The Academy of the Palm Beaches,
this is your first copy of the the new Palm
Beach Day Academy newsletter. The two
former school newsletters, Nautilus News
and SeaViews, have been combined into
one, all-school publication, named The
Bridge. That name symbolizes the
connection between our two campuses –
two campuses that exist across the water
from each other, but are linked by the
reliable and elegant Royal Park Bridge.
Additionally, the Royal Park Bridge, like
all bridges, can be seen as a symbol of our
school’s purpose - to provide a safe,
sturdy, and well supported passage toward
a goal and all that lies beyond.
The Bridge is published eight times per
year. Three of those eight are expanded
editions and include, as this issue does,
Alumni notes about your classmates.

families fled the disaster area leaving
principal Sharon Coll with only 24
students for fall of 2005. Sharon was not
the least bit despondent. She told the
ALA librarians that she felt fortunate to
begin the school year with a precious 24.
This fall of 2006, Sharon reports that she
proudly has 300 students. The families
are beginning to return. Her only
fear now is that people will forget
and the support will stop coming. I
promised her that we would help her
as long as possible. Our Outreach
Program, under the directorship of
Cynthia Kanai began the effort by
sending our first 100 books to Sharon
which she will be most grateful to
receive. Her library at the moment
is housed in the ribbed walled
cafeteria, gutted after the storm.

hardbound books.

M
onies raised by the Annual Giving Fund are critical to ensuring the school’s continuing excellence. Bridging the gap between
tuition and the cost of educating each student is an ongoing process and commitment. Therefore, on behalf of our students
and our School, we and the Board of Trustees would like to thank the families listed below for generously supporting the
2005-2006 PBDS Annual Giving Fund. We also want to thank specifically our volunteers, listed below, whose hard work was critical to

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
How did you get involved with
Jericho Project?
Ian Devine, Class of 1968
I
an Devine was born in New York City.
He entered Palm Beach Private School
(PBDA) in the second grade in 1960. His
sister Mallory entered sixth grade. Ian has
vivid fond memories of many of his former
teachers: Mrs. Logsdon, who brought a TV
into class so her students could watch Alan
Shepard’s fifteen minute ride into suborbital space, Miss Hajenian, his third
grade teacher, Mr. Ten Eyck, his sixth grade
teacher, and Mr. Bayless, Sr. whose Civil
War course was better than The History
Channel. Mallory now lives in Lenox,
Massachusetts, where she is an active
volunteer with the United Way and at
Tanglewood, the summer home of the
Boston Symphony Orchestra. Ian agreed to
answer our questions via e-mail for The
Bridge.
What are some of your fondest memories of the
Day School?
Where do I start? The sun rising over the
ocean while I waited for the bus. The
Pelicans snapping the Flamingos’ long
winning streak on Field Day. Beating Palm
Beach Public in football. Reading Huck
Finn after lunch. Beach days – does the
school still do that? Root beer floats at
Perna’s.
Looking back, I am still impressed by the
enthusiasm that PBDS teachers showed for
their work. They were entertaining and
passionate. From the classroom to the
athletic fields, my teachers cared about
what they taught. I remember Mr. Bayless,
Sr. on the Civil War, Mr. Skinner on Latin
tense structure and Mrs. Bayless on Venn
diagrams like it was yesterday.
Where did you continue your education?
I went to Deerfield Academy – four of us
from PBDS were there together in the late
‘60s – where I, uh, did not distinguish
myself academically. Nevertheless, the
University of Pennsylvania admitted me,
where I majored in English Lit. I’ve always
liked reading, analysis and writing.
A friend convinced me to
join Jericho Project’s Board
of Directors at a time when

Any advice for students at the Day Academy?
My goal is to help define themselves and
their financial products in a way that’s as
relevant as possible. I concentrate on firms Ask questions. Remind your teachers to

Working for myself gives me flexibility to
spend time with my 4-year-old daughter. I
also have a son at Northwestern and a

College last May. Being self-employed
also allows me to focus time and energy
on charitable activities.

Describe your charitable work.
I am actively involved with Jericho
Project, which provides supportive
housing for homeless substance abusers in
New York. Jericho (www.jerichoproject.org)
is very successful in addressing the
multiple causes of homelessness and each
year returns about a quarter of its
residents to the community as productive,
tax-paying citizens. And it does this for
about half the cost of keeping a person in
a homeless shelter without any services at
all. Jericho’s model really works and is
recognized nationally.
