Foundation philanthropically S P E A K I N G NEWS FOR OUR DONORS AND FRIENDS W I N T E R 2 0 13 Auxiliary members at our four Health First hospitals provide thousands of hours of service and range in age from 14 to 92. Leadership team members include (from left) Harald Jacobsen, Health First Viera Hospital Auxiliary, Angie Baumgardt, Auxiliary Vice President at Health First Palm Bay Hospital, Bettye Pitcock, Auxiliary Past President at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center, and Sue Loftin, Auxiliary President at Health First Cape Canaveral Hospital. The Ultimate Gift: time, talent, resources While many Health First Foundation donors support our community health care mission with generous financial gifts, the members of the Health First Auxiliaries do that and more. They can be the first person to greet you when you arrive at one of our hospitals, and they are often spotted bidding farewell to discharged patients they transport to waiting families. We are blessed to have strong Auxiliary groups at all four of our hospitals—Health First Cape Canaveral Hospital, Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center, Health First Palm Bay Hospital, and Health First Viera Hospital—more than 2,100 men and women whose diverse volunteer roles enhance and support a wide variety of community healthcare initiatives. At Health First Holmes Regional and Palm Bay Hospital, they work in over thirty service areas, including the Community Intensive Care Unit (ICU) waiting rooms, patient care units, transport, dietary, clerical support, and more. Not only do they give of their time and talents, they dig deep into their personal financial resources to give back. And, they work as an engaged charitable fund-raising team to host special activities and fund drives to support various programs, from buying equipment and renovating facilities to purchasing items that comfort and care for patients. Last year alone, their total cash donations exceeded $75,000, while in-kind support included making Hug-A-Bears for children in the Emergency Department, providing blankets and caps for newborns, and lap robes for oncology patients. Most of their special fund-raising activities are held within our hospital environments, creating a warm ambiance and (Continued on back page) support ANNU AL BE NE FIT BALL S E T FOR AP RIL 13, TO RAIS E FU NDS FOR H OS P ICE OF H E ALTH FIRS T Mark your calendars now for an evening of fun and elegance on Saturday, April 13, at the Health First Foundation Benefit Ball. The annual Black Tie Gala will be held once again at the Clemente Center at Florida Tech. It will be transformed into a beautiful venue complete with Dr. Ruddy Ruiz, exquisitely arranged table décor Medical Director, to match the evening’s theme, Hospice of Health First which committee members will announce in February. A sold out crowd of 550 is typical for the event, which has a long tradition of support from our local medical and business community. A sumptuous multi-course meal, including specially prepared appetizers and desserts, will be offered and served with much fanfare by a catering staff from Orlando, noted for preparing food for soirees for theme parks and special attractions. This year’s celebration will benefit Hospice of Health First, the only Joint Commission Accredited Hospice in Brevard County. As a not-for-profit program, Hospice of Health First was formed by volunteers and has been serving our community for more than 25 years. Their compassionate end-of-life care enables patients to remain at home during most or all of their illness, relatively free from pain, surrounded by family and friends, and living life as fully as possible. Benefit Ball proceeds will be Hospice of Health First is the only used to develop Joint Commission Accredited Hospice in Brevard County. For more details, visit: a Palliative Care www.Health-First.org/Hospice program for patients and expand programs and facilities for these services. Dr. Ruddy Ruiz is medical director for Hospice of Health First and will be working closely with the underwriting committee to inform our community on the services and needs. Hospice of Health First provides care to more than 150 patients each day in their homes. Services are provided to anyone in need, including those who cannot pay. Last year’s total charity care outreach exceeded $63,000. Extends Health Care Outreach Generous charitable gifts from our community – provided by individuals, families, businesses, and foundations — totaled more than $2.1 million in Fiscal Year 2012, with at least another $100,000 from in-kind donations, to support health care programs and services at Health First. Community philanthropy helped extend healthcare services in countless ways, from providing medications to comfort and care for patients at Hospice of Health First, to bringing new state-of-the-art technology to The Heart Center at Health First Holmes Regional or providing community nursing services through a unique partnership with faith-based organizations, and much more. More than 4,000 benefactors made charitable donations during the year. These gifts were made in support of our special fund-raising events, direct mail campaigns, memorial and honorarium giving, or as a final gesture of esteem for our healthcare services by including Health First in their will or estate plan. Debbie Helton, Manager Patient Relations and Volunteer Services at Health First Viera Hospital, says, “Auxiliary members exemplify all the good that Health First brings to the community — engagement, dedication, camaraderie, and the making of memorable experiences for our patients, their families, and visitors.” Guiding the Auxiliaries are leadership teams at each hospital, elected by members. The Auxiliary at Viera Hospital does not include a president, but a multi-member leadership team. “ D ECK I N G T H E H O S P ITA L H A LL S” The holiday season is ushered in each year at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center with the lighting and blessing of the Christmas tree, a special ceremony attended by patients, families, hospital benefactors, and friends. At this year’s event, held November 28, Jessica André of Melbourne was chosen as the honorary dignitary to “click the switch” to illuminate the lights on the large tree placed in the Wendy & Harry Brandon Atrium of The Heart Center. Joining her in the holiday program and pictured in front of the tree are Sean Gregory (left), President of Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center, and Steve Johnson, President & CEO of Health First. As we begin a new year of healthcare service to our community, we offer special recognition and thanks to the generous volunteers who together make up our hospital Auxiliaries.
