Meet the Head Coach
Head Coach Luis Carvalho
Luis Carvalho begins his fourth season as the head women's volleyball coach
at Rhode Island College. He led the Anchorwomen to their most wins in three
seasons, improving upon the '08 campaign by 10 wins, with an 18-19 performance
in 2009. RIC was 3-4 (fifth place) in the Little East Conference. For his efforts, he
was named the Little East Conference Coach of the Year.
RIC was 8-23 during the 2008 season. He led the Anchorwomen to a 15-17
overall record and a 2-4 (fourth place tie) in the
Little East Conference in 2007.
The East Providence native is a legend in the Rhode Island volleyball community. He was the varsity Head Girls’ Volleyball Coach
at East Providence High School for 25 years (1982-2007), capturing
seven R.I. Div. I State Championships during his tenure. Carvalho
was also the Townies’ varsity Head Boys’ Volleyball Coach for 13 years
(1989-2001), winning two state titles. He also won two R.I. Div. I titles
in boys’ soccer as the head coach at Barrington High School in 1985
and 1986.
Carvalho was named the Rhode
Island Male Coach of the Year by the
R.I.I.A. in 1993. Words Unlimited
named him the High School Girls
Coach of the Year in 1994 and again
in 2000. He is an 11-time Coach of the Year award recipient by the
Rhode Island Volleyball Coaches Association. Carvalho received the
Alice Sullivan Award, signifying him as the Girls Coach of the Year in
2000 and was a 2007 inductee into the Rhode Island Interscholastic
League Hall of Fame.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health
from the University
of Rhode Island
in 1973. He was a
two-time All-Yankee
Conference selection in soccer for the Rams. Carvalho
is a 1999 inductee into U.R.I.’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Carvalho retired after a 34-year career as a physical education teacher at East Providence High School.
He resides in Seekonk, Massachusetts with his
wife Maria ’74. They have three daughters: Melanie
’90 (38), Ligia ’92 (36) and Jennifer (34) as well as
four grandchildren.

Meet the Assistant Coach
Assistant Coach Keith Martinous
Keith Martinous begins his first season as an assistant women's volleyball coach at Rhode Island College.
In this role, Martinous is reunited with 2009 Little East Conference Coach of the Year Luis Carvalho. The
two have an extensive history of successful partnership in volleyball coaching at the high school level that they
seek to emulate at Rhode Island College. Before arriving at RIC, Carvalho served as the boys and girls head volleyball coach at East Providence High School. From 1997-2001, Carvalho held both positions simultaneously
and had Martinous as an assistant on at least one of his teams in each of those years. Martinous was Carvalho’s
assistant on the boys’ team from 1997-2002 and on the girls’ team from 1999-2003.
It was as Carvalho’s assistant at East Providence that Martinous got his first taste of championship volleyball.
The tandem raised R.I. Div. I State Championship banners in both boys’ and girls’ volleyball in 2000, followed
by a boys’ title in 2001 and a girls’ title again in 2002. Martinous succeeded Carvalho as head boys’ coach in
2002 and continued the winning tradition. The Townies reached the state finals in 2007 and brought home the Rhode Island crown again in
2008. East Providence reached the state semifinals in five of Martinous’ nine seasons.
Carvalho is excited to have Martinous aboard at Rhode Island College. “He’s a very dedicated individual,” Carvalho said. “There’s nothing
you can ask of Keith that he doesn’t do for you. He’s very resourceful.”
Martinous also had a distinguished playing career, one that began as a member of Carvalho’s very first East Providence boys volleyball
team in 1989. For the Townies, Martinous was an All-Stater in consecutive seasons, making the second team in 1989 before improving to
the first team in 1990.
In college, Martinous flourished as a middle hitter at Roger Williams University in Bristol. In the 1992 season, Martinous was the team’s
Rookie of the Year and finished ninth in the nation in blocks per game.
In addition to his coaching activities, Martinous teaches biology and physics at East Providence High School. Martinous earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with a biology concentration from Rhode Island College in 1996.
He resides in Rehoboth, Massachusetts with his wife Jennifer and their two children: Nolan (9) and Ethan (6).
