He led the Rhode Island College wrestling team to a 16-8 overall record and an 11-5 mark in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) in 2003-04. RIC captured its second consecutive Pilgrim Wrestling League title, posting a perfect 6-0 mark on the season. The Anchormen went undefeated with a 6-0 record in 2002-03 as well. Coming into ‘04-05, RIC has won 13 consecutive Pilgrim League matches. In addition, RIC’s 16 regular season victories are the most since the 1991-92 team won 18 and the Anchormen established a new school record with a team total of 69 pins, 19 more than 2001-02 squad. Jones was named the 2003 Rhode Island Man of the Year by Wrestling USA Magazine . Over the past five years, Jones has coached 17 All-New England wrestlers, two New England Champions, four national qualifiers and two Academic All-Americans. The Anchormen captur ed their first-ever Pilgrim Wrestling League title in 2002-03, posting a perfect 6-0 record in league play. RIC was 14-10 overall, 9-6 in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) and had one wrest le r qua lify f or the 2003 NCAA Div. II I Na tiona l Championships. RIC placed seventh (15 teams) at the 2003 NECCWA Championships, had four grapplers earn All-New England status and one New England Champion. The Anchormen were 10-13 overall, 8-7 in the NECCWA and 2-3 in the Pilgrim Wrestling League under his guidance in 2001-02. RIC had two wrestlers achieve All-New England status as RIC placed 12th (15 teams) at the 2002 NECCWA Championships. In 2000-01, RIC posted its first winning record since the ‘94-95 season. RIC cracked the top ten, placing ninth (15 teams) at the 2001 NECCWA Championships. RIC had four grapplers achieve All-New England status, with one New England Champion, RIC’s first since the ‘93-94 season. The Anchormen also had two wrestlers qualify for the 2001 NCAA Div. III National Championships. Jones was named the NECCWA’s Rookie Coach of the Year in ‘99-00. He inherited a team that was 013 overall and finished 14th in New England in 1998-99. The Anchormen fielded only four of a possible ten weight classes at the ‘99 NECCWA Championships. He brought the Anchormen back to respectability in ‘99-00. RIC was competitive in virtually all of its matches and had three wrestlers earn All-New England status at the 2000 NECCWA Championships. Prior to coming to RIC, Jones was the Head Wrestling Coach at Barrington High School in 1997-98 and 1998-99. The team placed eighth at the State Championships, tying a school recor d, in ‘98-99. Before taking the Head Coach’s position, Jones was an Assistant Coach at BHS from 1992-95 and again in 1996-97. During his seven-year stint at Barrington High School, he coached a total of four State Champions, four New England place-finishers and one New England Champion. The team won several league championships and BHS placed fifth at the New England High School Championships in 1997. He graduated from Rhode Island College with a bachelor of arts degree in communications in 1994. He earned an additional bachelor’s degr ee in secondary education from RIC, graduating magna cum laude with honors in teaching, in 1999. While an undergraduate at RIC, Jones was a four -year letterwinner for the Anchormen as a wrestler from 1988-92. He competed at 118 lbs. as a freshman and sophomore, 126 lbs. as a junior and 142 lbs. as a senior. He was a member of four straight New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Championship squads at RIC in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992. Jones also played four years on the RIC baseball team as a second baseman. In addition to his coaching duties, Jones is an English teacher at Cranston High School West. He was previously a sports photographer at WJAR Channel-10 in Pr ovidence from 1997-99. 43 Meet the Assistant Coaches Assistant Coach Scott Baum Scott Baum enters his sixth season as an assistant wrestling coach. Baum is responsible for assisting head coach Jay Jones with all phases of RIC’s wrestling program including recruiting, scouting, administering practices and match coaching. Prior to joining the RIC athletic staff, Baum was a high school wrestling official fr om 1996-99. Baum was the assistant wrestling coach at Burrillville High School in 1995-96. As an undergraduate, Baum wrestled three seasons for Rhode Island College. He competed at 177 lbs. as a sophomore and junior in 1992-93 and 1993-94. Baum competed at both 177 and 190 lbs. as a senior in 1994-95, co-captaining the squad and compiling a 10-8 record. Prior to attending RIC, he competed for Millersville University as a freshman in 1990-91. Baum earned his master’s degree in medical microbiology this past summer from Rhode Island College and his bachelor’s degree in biology from RIC in 1995. He is a 1990 graduate of Foxboro High School. In addition to his coaching duties, Baum is an anatomy & physiology/general sciences teacher at Foxboro High School. He currently resides in North Providence with his wife Christine. Assistant Coach Bob Smith Bob Smith enters his fifth season as an assistant wrestling coach at Rhode Island College. Smith assists in administering practices, match coaching and with recruiting. Smith is a legend in the high school wrestling ranks. He was an assistant and Head Coach at Coventry (RI) High School for 31 years from 1968 through 1999. He served two s tints as CHS’s Head Wrestling Coach, from 1972-76 and again from 1991-98. Under his tutelage, Coventry High School won an unprecedented 17 consecutive Rhode Island State Championships from 1982 through 1998, an unequalled nation-wide record. In 1998-99 he was named the National High School Wrestling Coach of the Year, which was awarded prior to the NCAA Division I National Championships at Penn State. The Rhode Island Wrestling Coaching Association also named him the Coach of the Decade, along with fellow Coventry wrestling coach Dick Magarian. Coventry High School wrestling was named Team of the Decade in the 1990s by USA Wrestling and the National High School Wrestling Coaches Association. Smith retired after over 31 years as a math teacher at Coventry High School.
