“What Inspires Me About Photography”
by Hannah Gibson
I love that photography can capture a person’s special moments; often just how they are
remembered, but, other times, it documents the unexpected and forgotten. It can record
an image of an everyday object showing it as no one has ever seen. A different angle or
closer proximity to the subject can make it appear so unusual and yet pleasing, attractive,
and, many times, thought provoking. Photography can say with a single picture what
words could never communicate. This art gives an outlet for my creativity and inspires
me to try new things within the medium. The possibilities with photography are endless;
I can make new images or manipulate older images into something completely different.
Photography is very versatile, and, like most art forms, allows
every person to develop their own style and display their unique
talents.

Digital Photography Program
flourishes with help from PPI
Members Michelle and Mike Davis
Our new world of electronic living is the driving force behind the
growing interest in digital photography. There is an ever growing
fascination with all things electronic, but digital imaging seems to
be towards the front of the pack. Not surprising, as photography
has always been a fascination for Americans of all income levels.
To a large degree however, it is the fact that digital imaging satisfies our
desire for instant gratification that makes it so popular. We can see the
photographic process through from creative inception all the way to the
end product without ever having to leave the house. It is no wonder that
digital photography classes are popping up everywhere. From High School
art classes to camera stores, Community Colleges and four year Universities,
photography classes and clubs are the new phenomena.
It is with this dramatic jump in technology in mind that the Northwest Iowa
Community College in Sheldon, Iowa, joined the league of institutions by
adding a digital photography program to its growing list of educational
offerings. The thing that makes Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC)
unique in the area is in the way that it’s digital photography program is
being presented. Based on the success of the forty-some year professional
photography program at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa,
the administration of NCC decided that a photography program of that
caliber could flourish in the far western reaches of the state.
The Digital Professional Photography program, taught by long-time
professional photographers Michelle and Michael Davis, of Sheldon, is
based to some degree on the curriculum
of HCC. “We look at our program as more
of an alternative than as an exact copy
of Hawkeye’s program.” says instructor
Michelle Davis. “We are basing our program
strictly on digital imaging. Digital is the
future of commercial photography and we
feel that it is the direction that we should be
pointing our students.”
The main courses of study at NCC are
portraiture, commercial photography and
photojournalism. “Our goal is to touch on
the areas of photography that have always
been the main-stays of the profession. There
will always be a place for photography with
a high degree of professionalism,” added
Michael Davis.

Of course, the other equally important area of study in NCC’s photography
department is an introduction to the Photoshop digital imaging computer
program. “Without photoshop, digital imaging is only half experienced,” said
Michelle. “The knowledgeable use of the
computer has become just as important
to photography as the camera.”
As NCC begins its third year with this new
program, the class has already been filled
to capacity. There is even a waiting list of
photography students for the start of fall

Meet One Of Our Members
Christina Kjar, photographer and digital artist, has experience in both studio and onlocation photography. Combining her portrait experience with a photojournalistic
eye, Christina has a unique style that creates timeless, artistic images.
In May of 2003, Christina graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a BA
in Art with an emphasis in Photography, Graphic Design, and Metals. She began her
studio photography career at Knop Photography in August of 2003. She started as a
digital artist and soon began working under Don Knop, owner of Knop Photography
and one of the top photographers in the state of Iowa. In April of 2004, Don
opened the Storm Lake location, where she relocated. On December 1st, 2007, she
purchased the studio and it became Christina Kjar Photography. In Janurary of 2010,
Christina moved her studio to a new restored historic bank building in downtown
Holstein.
Christina became a Certified Professional Photographer in October 2006. Over the past 5 years, Christina has
earned many photography awards, most recently being honored as one of the Top 10 Non-Masters in Iowa (2008
& 2010). In 2009, she was named a PPA Photographer of the Year. She has also won many other awards such as
2 Fuji Masterpiece awards, Top Certified Non-Master in Iowa, Top Multi-Maker Album, and has had numerous top
scoring prints in the state of Iowa.
Building/Moving information:
After living in Holstein for about 2 1/2 years, I purchased
a home, which lead me to the decision to relocate my
studio as well. A friend of mine had recently purchased a
building downtown and was having it completely renovated. Originally a bank, the building was built in the late 1880’s
and still had the original tin ceiling, hardwood floors, brick
walls, and bank vault. And it had 4 massive windows
that faced north - a photographer’s dream!!! After a
few months of going back and forth about moving
my studio, I decided to go for it. Over half of my
weddings were in Sioux City the past summer
anyway, so this would mean that I would be just 40
minutes from there and could hopefully expand into
that market with other areas as well. I plan to have
no mileage fees when going back to Storm Lake to
photograph so I can keep my current clients from
that area if they are not willing to travel. Since I do
most of my shooting outdoors or on-location anyway,
I decided it didn’t matter where I was located. That
is the beauty about our profession - it doesn’t matter
where you have your business - you can always create
art no matter what your surroundings are! As it turns out I made the right decision! I had
the busiest “slow” season ever, and my children’s
photography has really taken off! And I couldn’t ask for a more beautiful building to have my studio and gallery
in. Even though my photography studio is in a small town, I still have those big city dreams!

Meet Our Newest Board Members
I never thought my hobby as a photographer would turn into a business. But
due to the closing on the Case plant in Bettendorf,Iowa, I was left with only one
option. Turn that hobby into a business. I bought my equipment from a retiring
photographer in Clinton and sat up my first studio in the basement of my home
in Cordova, Illinois. That same photographer worked to help me succeed. She
know all about the business end of photography and hooked me up with a lab and
many venders that she had dealt with through her years in business. She also told
me about the PPI organization and persuaded me to join. In the end, she was the
one that told me of a vacant studio for sale in Clinton. We felt we had no other
choice, so took the leap. We bought the studio, sold our house and moved into an
apartment above the studio.
While Mrs. Finley was with me, I decided to take a six week course in photography at the WINONA Professional
School of Photography which was located in Chicago at that time. Through the years I have also taken advantage
of opportunities to attend MAIPP and the education provided by PPI. I also feel that a lot can be learned from
the knowledge of others. I have learned so much from all of you, and appreciate that so much. In the next few
years the business blossomed, so when Mrs. Finley finally left, our daughter Michelle came to work with me. She
was a senior in high school, had already accumulated the credits she needed to graduate so was able to come
home at noon and work with me in the studio. She has been a godsend. She also obtained her photographic
education at MAIPP, and has worked by my side for the past 20 years.
The business at the studio steadily grew, and I never thought I would ever be called back to the Case IH plant in
East Moline. After much deliberation, we decided that I needed to return to the factory and finish out my last few
years and retire, which I did. Michelle ran the business during the day and I worked with her in the afternoon after
returning home from the factory. It was tough, but we managed. The studio is still going strong after 26 years of
business.
I have been married to my wife, Deb for 42 years, and are the proud parents of two children. Michelle and her
husband John live in Clinton and have two children, Trenton,13 and Morgan 11. Our son Mike and his wife Gina,
live in Blue Grass, Iowa. They have three children, Michael Acosta, 22, Hope Selser, 21 and Makenzie 7. Mikes
daughter Hope has blessed us with two great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Brad. In our spare time, Deb and I like to
go to car shows with our 1957 Chevy Bel Air.
I was thrilled to be selected to serve on the PPI Board. I am looking forward to getting to know each and every
one or you through the next few years, and I want to do what I can to maintain the excellent reputation out
organization has acquired over the past years and work even harder to make it better

My passion for photography began
at Hawkeye Community College
in Waterloo. I joined in their
photography program in August of
2004. This is where I met my future
business partner, Jaimy Yoder, along
with a number of unseemly characters
such as Jerry Grier and Larry Erickson.
My family spent two years being
very understanding as I traveled daily
from Tiffin to Waterloo for classes and
worked in the evenings at GEICO Auto
Insurance. I graduated from Hawkeye
in May 2006 and signed up for my
first MAIPP class immediately. Things moved quickly after that
experience. I came home from MAIPP and quit my job within
a matter of days. Jaimy and I began renovating our Ovation
Photography building that same week and started looking for
customers. We have never looked back.
Mindy Decker
I have always enjoyed being an active part of the PPI
organization and happily donating my time wherever I can.
In 2008 I earned my Certified Professional Photographers
certificate. The following February 2009 I was awarded the
Associate Fellow of Photography at the Iowa Banquet. Both
of these honors mean a lot to me as they represent the time
I spend behind the camera and the time I donate behind the
scenes. I owe much to the Professional Photographers of Iowa
organization and I am excited to continue to give much of my
time back.
