A Nurse’s Journey with Hospice
O
dds are if you called Hospice of the Calumet Area between
1994 and 2007 to inquire about care for a client or loved one,
you spoke with Admissions Coordinator Penny Dow RN. Hospice
care was Penny’s passion, and we are proud her family chose us to
provide her care.
Penny heard the call to become an RN while assisting with end-oflife care for family members in the late 1970s. Elizabeth Kubler
Ross' groundbreaking book, "On Death and Dying," gave Penny
insight into the hospice movement, and soon she was studying at
the Indiana University Northwest School of Nursing.
Once Penny gained the nursing experience she felt she needed,
she joined Hospice of the Calumet Area as a nurse caring for
patients in their home and quickly advanced to Admissions.
Her 2007 retirement took her to Arizona, but living alone was
challenging and she returned to live with family in her Indiana home.
Penny was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2009.
Penny remained at home with family for five years, until it became
clear that her health and safety needs were changing. The family

here is a quote that is
frequently used in the hospice
world that reads:
Because care of the body means
nothing without first easing the
soul.

hat would you do if you only had 6 months to
live?
That’s a question that we often pose to audiences when
providing presentations about hospice. “Where do you
picture yourself and with who?”
Hospice workers are not
hired...They are called.
The question is often one that they’ve never considered
and answers are varied. Sometimes they respond, “I
want to take a cruise!” or “I want to go skydiving!” More
often it’s, “I want to be home surrounded by family and
friends.” Never have we had someone answer, “I picture
myself being in a hospital hooked up to machines!” But
in reality, if you don’t make your end-of-life plan, this
likely may happen.
It certainly is true for Penny Dow,
featured in our cover, hospice
patient story. Penny loved helping people coping with life
-limiting illness. It wasn’t what she did, it is who she is
as a part of our community. Day or night, week-end or
holiday, Penny went the extra mile to ease an individual’s
pain or get them safely home. Her calm, caring approach
and hospice expertise allowed her to easily connect with
the diverse populations we care for each day, along with
the healthcare professionals who entrust us with their
patients’ care. It’s our honor to now provide that same
level of compassionate care for our friend Penny and her
family.
Fact: 70% of people say they prefer to die at home.
However, the location of the majority of Americans dying
this year will be in a hospital.
Usually our next question is, “Have you discussed it with
anyone and have you written down your wishes?” If
you’re like most Americans, the answer is ‘no’. You’re not
alone.
Penny was passionate about hospice care, and the benefits of initiating care earlier in the course of an illness.
At the urging of their physicians, Hospice of the Calumet
Area staff often meet with individuals who decline care
because they aren’t ready. Some feel like they are “giving
up” or feel they have to be “sicker” to enter hospice care.
Hospice is designed for six months of care. Our professional nurses, social workers and spiritual counselors help
our patients and their families be ready for what is ahead.
Our team wants to learn what goals the patient has and
they focus on helping patients achieve them, whenever
possible. It’s an aggressive plan, specially designed for
each unique individual. And if your goal is for a miracle
cure, we hope for that right along with you, as we keep
you comfortable, prepared, and Cherishing Life.
Fact: 80% of people say that if seriously ill, they would
want to talk to their doctor about end-of-life care, yet
only 7% report having had an end-of-life conversation
with their doctor.
On our website HospiceCalumet.org, under our News
tab we have numerous Resources. One of them is
TheConvesationProject.org which allows you to download and print their “Starter Kit” at no charge. This is an
easy and convenient way to open discussions with loved
ones.
Also under Resources is CaringInfo.org. This website
provides state specific Advanced Directives, which
express your wishes should you become unable to speak
for yourself. These are also available to download free of
charge. No attorneys are needed, however, you will need
a notary. Staff at Hospice of the Calumet Area will be
glad to assist if you call us for an appointment.

chose a nursing home, and in February 2014 Penny moved to her new “apartment”. A marked physical decline began
after Penny’s October birthday, and her journey with Hospice of the Calumet Area came full circle in January 2015,
first as a Transitions program client and then as a hospice patient.
While remaining a resident of the Chesterton nursing home, Penny benefits from every service available through
Hospice of the Calumet Area's program: visits from a Caring Canine volunteer; regular massage therapy; Spiritual
Counselor’s comforting visits; personal care by Hospice Aides; emotional and practical support for the family from a
Social Worker; and last but certainly not least, regular visits and care from a Registered Nurse. Many of the team
members caring for Penny are former co-workers, and they can tell how much it means to her to receive the same
care she helped provide for many years.
Penny's family can't say enough about her improved quality of life since
hospice care began. Daughter Andrea commented, “Even though we knew
she would receive great care with an organization we trust, we really had no
idea how the quality of care and programs offered by Hospice of the Calumet
Area would support her (and us). What we learned and want to share with
others in a similar situation is that Hospice care is another layer of support not
only for your loved one (in this case my Mom) but also for the family. The
Hospice program allowed me to step down from being a caregiver and once
again be her daughter which was very important to me.”

Hospice of the Calumet Area cares for most patients in their homes, even if home is a skilled care facility, so adding
our services to the care Penny was already receiving meant better attention to her unique needs. The vigilance of
Penny's family, as well as their familiarity with the hospice philosophy of care, made it possible for her to be admitted
when she became appropriate for care, before experiencing a crisis.
As Penny approaches the end of her life’s journey, her family is very comforted knowing that what Penny gave
tirelessly to her profession, her hospice calling, is now coming back to her to support her on her hospice journey.
Her family is also very grateful that she will receive comfort and excellent care improving the quality of her life for
the time that she has until her spirit is ready to take off and fly.
Friends of Hospice host the 2015 Seeds of Hope!
The Friends of Hospice, the fundraising auxiliary for Hospice of the Calumet Area, held its annual Seeds of Hope
dinner on Thursday, May 7, at Avalon Manor in Merrillville, IN. The event was a great success with more than
360 guests in attendance, raising more than $70,000 for Hospice of the Calumet Area programs and services.
This year the event’s live auction was led by auctioneer, Jason
Horn. The event also took on a new twist with big band
music provided by the Steve Cooper Orchestra. The event
honoree, Gustavo E. Galante, M.D., was recognized for his
many years of service to Hospice of the Calumet Area and for
his compassionate commitment to Northwest Indiana. Dr.
Galante was presented with an original framed photograph
by local photographer, Pete Doherty. The beautiful photo
picturing the lakeshore of the Indiana Dunes will be hung in a
patient room at the William J. Riley Memorial Residence in his

honor. The Hospice Artisans also were on hand to sell their

stating, “Friends of Hospice had the pleasure of recognizing Dr. Gus Galante for his compassionate commitment
to Hospice of the Calumet Area. Along with Dr. Galante, many caring individuals and businesses donated
generously to make Seeds of Hope a success. This support is greatly appreciated and will assist in improving
the quality of life of individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses.”

Community Corner
Hospice Volunteers Recognized
On a beautiful spring day in April, Hospice of the
Calumet Area hosted their annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in honor of National Volunteer Week.
Nearly 100 men and woman who contribute a true
labor of love attended this special gathering. Hospice
of the Calumet Area is proud of their 423 volunteers
that last year contributed over 12,000 hours at a cost
savings of $280,000 to the organization. In short, we
wouldn't exist if it wasn't for our volunteers. Additionally, several of our volunteers were recognized for their
many years of service. Five, 10 and even 25 years of
service were celebrated. These incredible individuals
serve as companions to our patients, assist with office
work, attend funeral services, fundraise and so much
more. Their impact on Hospice of the Calumet Area
and the community is truly tremendous. We can never
say thank you enough!

Charles Van Gorp: Remembering a Man of Service
On Thursday, April 16, Culver’s of Schererville held a special
fundraising day to remember hospice patient Charles Van Gorp.
Charles Van Gorp was the owner of "Hair Fashions by Charles"
in Griffith. He retired in 2012 after having worked as a hair
designer for over 40 years. He and his partner Louis went to
the Culver’s in Schererville three or four times a week to enjoy
a meal together. Most of the Culver’s crew knew them by name.
Charles liked to be actively involved with people. He would help
clean up or assist elderly customers at Culver’s. Frequently he
would do people’s hair that were sick at no charge, took care
of family and friends during illness and was known to pull in
the neighbors garbage cans. He was always doing small acts
of kindness.
During the winter of 2015, Charles became a patient at the William J. Riley Memorial Residence. There he was
visited by former clients and many caring friends. It was because of the exceptional care that he received, as well
as having the ability to pass away peacefully and with dignity that Louis and the Culver’s staff wanted to give
something back.
Nearly 150 people visited Culver’s in memory of Charles. Louis was front and center greeting people as they approached the entrance of the restaurant. He was truly taken aback by all those that visited, “No matter how much
is raised, this has been a wonderful experience. To see all those that knew Charles and even those that didn’t, but
came to support hospice.”

Each brick costs $100 with the funds
used to support care for the individuals
and families we serve. A card will be
sent to you when the brick is installed.
Choose wording that is meaningful to
you, keeping in mind that spaces and
punctuation are counted as characters
with each line allowing a maximum of 12.
All wording is reviewed before the stone
is inscribed and we reserve the right to
edit text to fit in the available space.
The individually inscribed rustic bricks
are placed twice a year in the Walkway at
the William J. Riley Memorial Residence,
located in Munster, Indiana. Bricks
ordered between mid-September and
March are placed in the spring, and bricks
ordered between April and early
September are placed in the fall.
