Currents Carroll County Public Library A great place to learn SPRING 2014 Mar. · Apr. · May Carroll County Public Library and McDaniel College present An Evening With Jill McCorkle Bestselling Author of Life After Life Details about this event can be found on page 2 Season Highlights with Director Lynn Wheeler AN EVENING WITH JILL McCORKLE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF LIFE AFTER LIFE Carroll County Public Library and McDaniel College invite you to an evening with bestselling author Jill McCorkle. She has the distinction of having her first two novels published on the same day in 1984. Of these novels, The New York Times Book Review said, “One suspects the author of The Cheer Leader is a born novelist, with July 7th, she is also a full grown one.” Since then she has published three other novels—her latest, Life After Life —and four collections of short stories. THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 7:00 pm McDaniel College, Lewis Hall of Science, Decker Auditorium $10 – Includes copy of Life After Life ABOUT LIFE AFTER LIFE Jill McCorkle’s first novel in seventeen years is alive with the daily triumphs and challenges of the residents and staff of Pine Haven Estates, a retirement facility now home to a good many of Fulton, North Carolina’s older citizens. Among them, third-grade teacher Sadie Randolph, who has taught every child in town and believes we are all eight years old in our hearts; Stanley Stone, once Fulton’s most prominent lawyer, now feigning dementia to escape life with his son; Marge Walker, the town’s self-appointed conveyor of social status who keeps a scrapbook of every local murder and heinous crime; and Rachel Silverman, recently widowed, whose decision to leave her Massachusetts home and settle in Fulton is a mystery to everyone but her. C.J., the pierced and tattooed young mother who runs the beauty shop, and Joanna, the hospice volunteer who discovers that her path to a good life lies with helping folks achieve good deaths, are two of the staff on whom the residents depend. McCorkle puts her finger on the pulse of every character’s strengths, weaknesses, and secrets. And, as she connects their lives through their present circumstances, their pasts, and, in some cases, their deaths, she celebrates the blessings and wisdom of later life and infuses this remarkable novel with hope and laughter. "I have never read anything at all like this stark and brilliant book, which examines death, dying, and human love through the perspective of young hospital chaplain Henrietta during her initial year of duty in the ‘viewing room.’ I feel changed and enlarged by these extraordinary characters, their dire situations, and life stories.”— Lee Smith, author of Fair and Tender Ladies "I loved working with Jacquelin Gorman in the Praiano writers' group and was blown away when I read her unforgettable story collection, The Viewing Room. How did she do it? How did Jackie craft fiction about death and dying that is triumphantly lifeaffirming? I marvel at her achievement and hope that The Viewing Room finds the wide audience it deserves." —Wally Lamb Jacquelin Gorman grew up in a family of physicians near Johns Hopkins Hospital. She has worked as a health care lawyer and a hospital chaplain and is currently the program director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Ms. Gorman has an MFA in fiction from Spalding University. She is the niece of Ogden Nash. Ms. Gorman is also the author of The Seeing Glass: A Memoir. Participating students are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of viewpoints. The game format creates interest in reading, school spirit, and teamwork. Through the fun and excitement of competition, students improve their reading skills. Last year, nearly 500 students participated in the program, forming 70 teams with names like "The Reading Rebels" and "The Book Worms." The participants had a great time while developing their reading skills: a number of students saw their reading scores increase 10 to 20 points. This year's Battle promises to be an even bigger event, with 150 teams and more than 1200 students expected to participate. 4 Battle of the Books is presented by the Carroll County Public Library in partnership with Carroll County Public Schools. Hear nominated picture books read by local school media specialists and special guest, Commissioner Doug Howard. Other activities include crafts and face painting. The Black Eyed Susan Award is given each year to authors and/ or illustrators of outstanding books chosen by Maryland students. The Award is sponsored by the Maryland Association of School Librarians (MASL). To prepare for the annual vote, reading committees made up of members of MASL meet to determine which books will be nominated and placed on student reading lists. There are four reading lists: picture books, books for students in Grades 4-6, books for students in Grades 6-9, and books for High School students. In selecting nominees for the lists, the reading committee looks for well-written books that will broaden the reader’s human experience and provide students with new insights into their lives. Books may be suggested for consideration by students, teachers, parents and other interested readers. Following are some of the criteria used to determine nominated books: • May be fiction or non-fiction • Must have a copyright date of the current year or the preceding three years, and be readily available. • Received positive reviews from appropriate professional journals. • Must have been read, discussed and voted upon by the appropriate Black-Eyed Susan reading committee before being placed on a list. Each spring, students are encouraged to cast one vote for the book they consider to be the most outstanding book in each of the categories. All votes from schools across Maryland are submitted to the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award committee to be tallied in order to determine the winners. The winning authors, illustrators, and publishers recognize the Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Book Award as an honor bestowed by Maryland student readers. The Carroll County Public Library selects Black-Eyed Susan Award nominated books for Battle of the Books. We are very pleased to partner with Carroll County Public School Media Specialists to prepare for the annual Battle of the Books. This year there will be nine exciting Battles that test each team’s knowledge of the books they have read and discussed throughout the year. The Black Eyed Susan book sets for each team are provided by the Friends of the Carroll County Public Library. The Friends of the Carroll County Public Library thank the Battle of the Books participants for the hundreds of thank you notes they received. 5 Celebrating America at CCPL This spring we are highlighting two books that celebrate fathers: A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver by Mark Shriver When Sargent "Sarge" Shriver—founder of the Peace Corps and architect of President Johnson's War on Poverty—died in 2011 after a valiant fight with Alzheimer's, thousands of tributes poured in from friends and strangers worldwide. These tributes, which extolled the daily kindness and humanity of "a good man," moved his son Mark far more than those who lauded Sarge for his big-stage, headline-making accomplishments. After a lifetime searching for the path to his father's success in the public arena, Mark instead turns to a search for the secret of his father's joy, his devotion to others, and his sense of purpose. Mark discovers notes and letters from Sarge; hears personal stories from friends and family that zero in on the three guiding principles of Sarge's life—faith, hope, and love—and recounts moments with Sarge that now take on new value and poignancy. In the process, Mark discovers much about himself, as a father, as a husband, and as a social justice advocate. A Good Man is an inspirational and deeply personal story about a son discovering the true meaning of his father's legacy. My Father’s Hands by Joanne Ryder For Younger Readers—With graceful, loving words and vibrant art, Joanne Ryder and Mark Graham portray a special father who shares what he values most—all the beauty and wonder of the natural world. MEMORIAL DAY IN WESTMINSTER Monday, May 26 Westminster’s 147th Memorial Day Parade and Observance will begin at 10:00. Before the parade, stop by Mary Lou Dewey Sculpture Park in front of the Westminster Branch to view a special collection of patriotic-themed posters from the University of Illinois Archives. These exceptional posters are made possible through a partnership with the American Library Association. Coffee and exquisite pastries from JeannieBird Baking Company will be on sale in the park. Photos from last year's Memorial Day Parade Give More Books, GIve Good Books ALA0001266 - Courtesy of the University of Illinois Archives 6 Freedom Shrine Document Series Each quarter our branches display replicas of four Freedom Shrine documents. This spring, we will be featuring: Franklin Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" Speech, 1941 German Instrument of Surrender WWII, 1945 John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address, 1961 Ronald Reagan's Speech at Brandenburg Gate, 1987 Stop by a branch to read these important documents and see copies of the famous painting series The Four Freedoms, created by Norman Rockwell in 1943. Inspired by FDR’s 1941 “Four Freedoms” State of the Union address and now in the Norman Rockwell Museum, reproductions of these iconic paintings were featured on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post for four consecutive weeks in 1943, accompanied by essays by prominent thinkers. They were also in a traveling exhibition sponsored by Saturday Evening Post and the U.S. Department of the Treasury as part of a war bond sales drive which raised over $132 million to support the war effort. The Freedom Shrine documents are an initiative of the Exchange Club. http://www.freedomshrine.com/ Celebrating America events Celebrating Carroll County History with the Shriver Family Sunday, March 16, 2:00 pm Westminster Branch James M. Shriver III , past president of the Union Mills Homestead Foundation and descendent of the Shriver family will speak about the recently published book, Pastime: Life & Love on the Homefront During the Civil War, 1861-1865, edited by Helen Drury Macsherry. The book features never-before-published materials from the Shriver family archives. Enjoy a cup of tea and baked goods made from flour produced at Union Mills, while learning more about the Shriver family and the history of Carroll County. Rendezvous with Destiny: How Franklin D. Roosevelt and Five Extraordinary Men Took America into the War and into the World, by Michael Fullilove A book discussion led by Dr. Dean Kotlowski, Salisbury University Thursday, April 17, 7:00 pm Finksburg Branch We are delighted that Dr. Kotlowski, Professor of 20th century history at Salisbury University is back to lead a discussion on an important new book on FDR and World War II. In the days between Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September 1939, and Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, FDR sent five men on an unorthodox and dangerous mission to Europe. That initiative played an important role in setting the course of WWII. Dr. Kotlowski is a nationally known presidential historian and Fulbright Scholar. 7 GREAT READERS, GREAT LEADERS: DR. FAYE PAPPALARDO This Spring, we are honored to feature book recommendations from Dr. Faye Pappalardo, President of Carroll Community College, a position she has held for 15 years. Under her leadership, Carroll Community College (CCC) has nearly doubled in enrollment. Today, CCC offers over 40 career transfer programs, including Engineering, Physical Therapy, Teaching, and Accounting. Dr. Pappalardo received a Bachelor of Science degree from Mt. St. Mary’s College, a Master of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University, and a Doctorate in Higher and Adult Education from Columbia University. She completed Harvard University’s Institute for Management of Lifelong Learning and received a certificate in French Studies from L’Institute Catholique de Paris. Since 1999, CCC’s extensive campus expansion has included the theater building, business training center, Nursing and Allied Health Building and two classroom buildings, as well as the Mt. Airy College Center for Health Care Education, a partnership with neighboring community colleges. Dr. Pappalardo was named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women by the Daily Record and Rotary Club’s Citizen of the Year. She serves on the Carroll County Economic Development Commission, is Chair of the Scouting Advisory Committee, and served on the Board of Directors of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Carroll Hospice. 8 Dances with Luigi: A Grandson’s Search for His Italian Roots by Paul E. Paolicelli The author, a veteran television journalist, moves to another country to discover his ancestors. Luigi, his guide and friend, accompanies the author to many parts of Italy to study the impact of World War II on the country where his roots were founded. Throughout her tenure, Dr. Pappalardo has developed CCC into a significant center for workforce development. CCC implemented a nursing program which graduated its first class of registered nurses in 2005. The college has a robust continuing education and training program; in addition, it provides a wide range of training and consulting services designed to support small businesses through its Miller Center for Small Business, working in close partnership with the Carroll County Department of Economic Development. Dr. Pappalardo first joined CCC in 1988 as Director of Student Affairs. At that time, the college was affiliated with Catonsville Community College. She was instrumental in developing the case for an independent community college in Carroll County, which was established in 1993. Following are two of the books Dr. Pappalardo recommends. For the complete list go to http://library. carr.org/help/borrow.asp or stop in at any branch to pick up a Dr. Pappalardo book mark! Why Dr. Pappalardo Loves This Book: My grandparents are from Italy, so this book is very nostalgic for me. It is so warm and touching to read about this grandson who wants to learn more about his heritage. I feel something in common with the character in this book. Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer by James L. Swanson Passionate about providing top notch education to her students and lifelong learning opportunities to the community, Dr. Pappalardo has transformed CCC into a much-loved institution and source of community pride, hosting important community events, including the annual Penguin Random House Book Fair, the Starry Night Gala, summer camps for children and an annual Civil War Symposium. Dr. Pappalardo will be retiring in June 2014. She can be very proud of her superb achievements. Carroll County is the fortunate beneficiary of her vision and commitment. We wish her a welldeserved and fulfilling retirement with time to enjoy lots of good books! The biggest manhunt in the history of the United States may have been for the murderer of Abraham Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth, the assassin, caused a wild 12-day chase through Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. The book chronicles the aftermath of one of the darkest days in Presidential history. Why Dr. Pappalardo Loves This Book: This book is a chilling narrative of how Booth was premeditated in his actions. He was chased throughout familiar Maryland places, which made me picture how the events unfolded in a very realistic fashion. THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS! CCPL has 401 volunteers who donate nearly 10,500 hours a year. We thank our volunteers for sharing their talents and skills to help us better serve our customers. I’d like to highlight two of our volunteers: JOHN SCHAUB John Schaub has been volunteering since 1993, repairing CDs, DVDs and video games. Sharon Roman, who purchases the non-print collection for the library says of John’s work: “He saves Carroll County Public Library thousands of dollars a year by cleaning and repairing CDs, DVDs and games." After John retired from a career at AT&T, he started volunteering at the Eldersburg Branch, where he got involved in fixing broken VHS tapes. Soon he transferred to library headquarters and started repairing non-print materials for all branches. His work today focuses on cleaning and resurfacing CDs, DVDs and games. John notes, “My objective is to keep items on the shelves for customers. I hate to think of the next poor guy coming along and getting something and finding it doesn't work." John Schaub Always organized, John maintains a spreadsheet of the extra discs he keeps on hand to replace lost and damaged discs. "If you don't have a spreadsheet you can't find a thing," John says of the boxes and boxes of stray CDs he keeps. He keeps order over 1,000 spare audio book CDs to replace damaged or missing discs in audio book sets. John’s volunteer activities aren't limited to the library. Every year he works at the Sykesville-Freedom District Fireman's Carnival, and he is a volunteer at the Monocacy National Battlefield. John has a delightful sense of humor and always greets colleagues with a smile. After more than 20 years as a volunteer for CCPL, John says he’s still enjoying the work, because he is contributing back to the community. Needless to say, we are very thankful for John’s excellent work! EDWARD PAVLINSKY Ed is in his sixth year as a volunteer at the Mt. Airy Branch, and has volunteered over 675 hours. Ed volunteers in the Circulation Department where he checks in materials from the book drop, helps with the branch book sales, and organizes a number of projects. At times he also has provided one-on-one computer training to customers. Ed's sense of humor brightens the day of the staff. Circulation Services Manager, Leslie Ehrensberger, notes,“When Ed is in, rarely is there a day that you don't hear laughter as he interacts with staff while he’s working.” He is always willing to fill-in for others. We thank Ed for his excellent work, reliability and flexibility! National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 6-12, 2014 Edward Pavlinsky 9 9 THE ELDERSBURG MASTER GARDENERS The Master Gardeners who work on the garden at the Eldersburg Branch have recently planted some new items in memory of Master Gardener Rhoda Wilmsen, who passed away earlier this year. Ms. Wilmsen participated in the original planting of this native garden. An assortment of fall pansies and a Variegated Red Twig Dogwood were added to the garden; the selected shrub was one of her favorites. Top row, left to right: Andrea Kowaleski, Beverly Blatchford, Susan Villere, Joanna Conrey, Karen Trigger and Peggy Dash. Bottom row: Joann Beck and Sharon Rowe Standing: Rose Norseth Not pictured: Suzanne Bavir, Teresa Conner, Shelia Bowman, Nancy Bittler, Anna Letaw, Serena Pelletier, Joyce DeBow, Jane Thayer, MaryAnn Price, Jennifer Trice and Jeanette Gilmore. Staff Spotlight: NAOMI KEPPLER 1. What have you recently read? Most of my reading consists of textbooks for school, but I recently got a chance to reread Tina Fey's Bossypants. I know all the jokes, but I still laugh every time! Probably the power to communicate with animals. My cat looks so wise and I'm desperate to know if it's just a façade. 2. What's your favorite song to sing in the shower? 6. What would you choose if you could only eat one food for the rest of your life? Bohemian Rhapsody is a blast to sing anywhere, but the privacy of the shower allows me to really belt it out. The echo seems to add a lot of power. Spaghetti, for sure. I am a vegetarian who doesn't like vegetables, so I'm pretty much a carb-ivore. 3. In which fictional world would you like to live? The world Max creates in Where the Wild Things Are. It would be awesome to take a break from reality and hang out with the wild things all day. 4. If you didn't work at the library, where would you be working instead? I would love working at a movie theater again. Recommending movies is one of the most rewarding parts of working at CCPL for me, so any environment where I can do that would be great. Naomi Keppler is a Circulation Clerk at the North Carroll Branch. 10 5. If you could have any super power, what would it be? 7. When was the last time you did something for the first time? I recently went to Chicago for the first of what I hope to be many times. I really loved the trip and I was able to see a Second City comedy show which has always been on my bucket list. 8. If there was a book about you, what would the title be? Lady in Plaid 9. What movie do you watch every time it airs? Space Jam. It really is timeless. 10. Which of CCPL's core values is most important to you? We treat everyone equally and with respect. Eldersburg Branch for all ages Year-Round Family Storytime For All Ages.
