Manufacturing Day
October 5th & 6th
Across the United States,
Manufacturing Day is an opportunity for
people of all ages and from all walks of life
to learn something about manufacturing
through first-hand personal experience. Here
in Ouachita Parish, the real focus is about
providing guidance to high school students
that can help them when it comes time to
make career decisions. If we don’t expose
students to manufacturing they will never
choose it as a career option.
Several manufacturers in Ouachita
Parish have signed up to provide tours of
their facility to students on Thursday and
Wednesday, October 5th and 6th. We hope
that more manufacturers in the region will
want to create these kinds of introductory
experiences for students, teachers, and
counselors, as well. Please let us know if
your manufacturing business is willing to
give a 45 minute tour of your facility on
either October 5th or 6th. If you would like to
participate, please call Sue Nicholson at
807-4015 for more information.
Join us for an adventure down the Mighty Mississippi!
Twain's timeless classic sweeps us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a
slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and
heartwarming, bringing to life your favorite characters from the novel-the Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss
Watson; the uproarious King and Duke, who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; Huck's partner in crime, Tom
Sawyer, and their rowdy gang of pals; Pap Finn, the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes and her trusting family. Propelled by an
award winning score from Roger Miller, the king of country music, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical
celebration of pure Americana.

Children’s Coalition Seeking Volunteers
Hurricane season is here--and in the event of an evacuation, it is our responsibility to provide respite childcare in
the Critical Needs Shelter in Bastrop. During Katrina/Rita in 2005 and Gustav/Ike in 2008, Coalition staff and
volunteers cared for over 330 children from birth to age 12 in the Bastrop and Monroe CTNS shelters. Children
in the shelter are provided quality care in two-hour shifts, which allows parents to attend to their needs such as
obtaining medical or mental health care, taking a shower or even taking a nap!
During a natural disaster we often feel so helpless; this is a chance to literally "shelter our children from the
storm."
As a "Sheltering Children" volunteer you will provide loving care to the children in the shelters under the
direction of the Children's Coalition staff. You will be asked to work no more than two 3-hour shifts a week.
P
We are holding a volunteer training/information session on September 12 from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Children's
Coalition (1363 Louisville Ave, Monroe); there will be additional trainings later in the month. You can also call
Gerry Binkley at the Coalition office (318-323-8775) for more information.
