Next School Year Just Around the Corner
Another school year is completed and we are busy preparing for next year. Rick
Eakin (Instrumental Music) and Kathy Wasson (HS secretary) are retiring. Their
hard work and dedication to the Van Buren Schools will be greatly missed. Both are
quality individuals that always had the best interest of the school and the students
at heart. We will miss them and hope that they come back often.
In addition, we have lost some other quality faculty due to personal issues and
career choices. We will be hiring a new science teacher and a new Language Arts
teacher in the middle school. The high school will have a new head girls’ basketball
coach and a new English teacher next fall.
The Board of Education will be busy in the months of June and July processing
information to make an informed decision on how to proceed following the failed
bond levy in May. A decision to place an issue on the November ballot must be
made by the end of July. To make this decision, the Board is seeking input from
the community. All teachers were surveyed prior to their summer vacation and a
group of community leaders have been invited to share information with the Board.
A community, facility survey has been developed and is available to be taken online
at www.vbschools.net and www.yes4vbs.org. I encourage you go online and complete this survey. Let your voice be heard. The survey will provide demographic
information, information on the building project, and give us insight on how best to
get our message to you. Please call, visit, or email to discuss any school matters.
Your input is important to us.
Enjoy your summer. Have some wonderful family adventures and we will see
you back here in August.
Money Matter$
Cheryl Swisher, Treasurer
This is the second article in the series of articles to give the community of Van
Buren School some information regarding the finances of the district. This article
will focus on where the district spends the money it receives. There are six areas
where the district spends its money (See chart below):
1. Salaries 53%
2. Benefits 21%
3. Purchase Services 19%
4. Supplies and Materials 4%
5. Capital outlay 1%
6. Other 2%
Salaries are subject to negotiated agreements for teachers, custodians, bus
drivers, secretaries, teacher aides, food service workers, monitors, and mechanic.
The district negotiates with two unions, Van Buren Education Association (VBEA)
for the teachers and Ohio Association of Public Sector Employees (OAPSE) for the
others. The VBEA agreement expires in 2016 and the Board is in current negotiations with the OAPSE union now. The average change in expenses for this line
item for the past five (5) years is 3.11%. This includes new hires and raises.
Benefits are comprised of insurance costs, retirement costs, workers compensation, etc. Historically the district has realized increases of 14.04%, 8.21%, 7.64%
and 8.21% respectively from 2008 - 2011 FY in healthcare costs. In 2012, in an
effort to keep costs in line, the district moved staff away from more expensive insur-

ance plan to a more economical plan saving the district over $118,679 or a 23%
decrease from the previous year. In doing this, the district was able to reduce additional costs and was able to secure a 0% rate increase for 2012, 2013 and 2014.
The cost per student for salaries and benefits is:
Purchase services include service contracts, utilities, community school
transfers, open enrollment out students, special education contracts, millstream,
substitute employees, attorney and legal fees, etc. Previous years have seen an
average of 5.54% increase. The large increase mainly has to do with increased
costs due to fuel surcharges, delivery costs, contract increases, and the like. Every year we try and renegotiate with current contract providers and always go out
and look for competitors that may provide a lower cost. Unfortunately, because of
the uniqueness of services provided there are sometimes limited providers for that
service.
Supplies are defined as the consumable items that the district uses. Some
examples are fuel, paper, school supplies, workbooks, etc. Historically the district has realized increases/decreases of -8.58%, and 8.23%, 5.93%, 14.17% and
8.05% respectively from 2009 - 2013 FY. Increases in 2012 (14.17%) are from
ARRA (American Reinvestment and Recovery Act) monies (federal grant) used in
previous years for supplies that in 2012 had to be replenished with General Fund
money since the ARRA money was a one-time allocation. The average of the last
five (5) years is 5.56%.
Capital outlay pays for any capital improvement or purchase that cannot be
paid for with the schools permanent improvement (PI) levy. This is used for equipment (usually having less than a $5,000 value) or other capital items that PI money
is not used for.
The other category is used for anything else that cannot be classified above.
Mainly this is dues and fees, awards, etc.
Total General Fund expenditures range between $10,000,000 and $11,000,000
each year. In 2014 they are estimated at $10,403,199. If you have questions regarding any of this information, please contact Cheryl Swisher at 419-299-3863
x103.
Immunization Requirement for Entering Seventh Grade
In accordance with Ohio Revised Code, all students entering seventh grade
are required to have the Tdap immunization updated. This can be taken care of
either at the county or city health departments or your family physician.

Best of Luck to the both of you!
You will be GREATLY missed!
Quiz Bowl Competes at National Tournament
The tournament at Riverdale in January was supposed to be the final high
school Quiz Bowl event of the season. Instead the team shown in this new format
and won every match they played. This qualified VB’s team for a national tournament to be held in Minneapolis the first weekend in May. The National Association
of Quiz Tournaments held its first small schools event and we were a part of it! Our
team included Matt Bado, Matt Wilkins, Natalie Risser, Drew Conner, Matt Cooper,
AJ Arriaga, Tom Rowles, Jared Smith, Ian Kern, and Zoie Nieto. Zach Schiefer
was unable to make the trip.
We held a couple of fundraisers and got a few generous donations to help defray the cost of the trip. The school provided our registration fee and transportation
to the airport and back (at 10:00 p.m. on Sunday night—thanks Mrs. Sattler!) The
team member’s families also provided a considerable portion of the expenses.
When the competition began it was clear that our lack of experience with
NAQT’s format put us at a disadvantage as we were matched with teams that had
won local, regional, and state competitions in this format. We won two of our nine
matches on Saturday, then spent the evening at the Mall of America (fun!). On
Sunday we played some “consolation” matches, then hopped the train to downtown Minneapolis for lunch and a little siteseeing. We had a great time and wish to
thank the anonymous donor, Findlay Family Practice, Van Buren Academic Boosters, Mr. Brand, Mrs. Kern (for arranging our flights), and our chaperones; Mr. Jim
Bado, Mrs. Denise Rowles, and Mrs. Terri Wilkins for their support of the Quiz Bowl
trip.

CLASS OF 2015 STUDENTS AND PARENTS/GUARDIANS:
Your senior year is right around the corner, and that means you will be
getting your senior pictures taken. I would encourage you to try to have your
pictures taken this summer so you will not have any problems making the
Friday before Thanksgiving deadline to turn in the picture you want to appear in the yearbook. If you are not able to have your pictures taken during
the summer, I suggest at least making the appointment during the summer
so that the pictures can be taken in plenty of time to meet the deadline. The
yearbook staff would also like to include a baby picture (any age) of each
senior in the yearbook, and that can be turned in along with the senior picture. Those pictures will be returned to the student at the end of the school
year. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Brian Bratt,
yearbook adviser, at 299-3384 ext. 407 or [email protected].

Seventh Grade A-T Walk Raises over $1,000
In honor of classmate Brody Ellingsworth, his sister Madeline, and their family,
our seventh graders held a walk to benefit the A-T Children’s Project. Madeline
was diagnosed with A-T (ataxia-telangiectasia), a rare genetic disease, and passed
away in April. The A-T Children’s Project supports and coordinates biomedical research, scientific conferences, and a clinical center aimed at finding life-improving
therapies and a cure for A-T. Our seventh graders raised over $1,000 to donate to
this terrific cause in honor of the Ellingsworth family.

“The Beauty of Music and Art.”
The Van Buren Elementary School held their annual Music and Art Extravaganza on Thursday, May 8, 2014, to celebrate the beauty of Music and Art.
The performance began promptly at 6:30 p.m. with music from the fifth grade
band, under the direction of Mr. Rick Eakin. They played two selections including
"William Tell Slides Again" and "Quest of the Knights Templar". The band really
showed that they have been working hard all year. The sections were well practiced. After their performance, Samuel Seitz presented Mr. Eakin with gifts for his
retirement.
The band was followed by the first graders under the direction of Miss VanVlerah.
The students combined practiced choreography along with expressive enthusiasm
during their performance of "Chickery Chick" and "Caribbean Amphibian". They
had practiced for several months and displayed definite professionalism.
Miss VanVlerah then directed the second graders in a moving rendition of
"Candle on the Water". The second graders also displayed their musical skills and
talent when performing their final song "The Great Outdoors".
Following the second graders were the third grade students who performed four
songs using a scale of hand bells. They played "When the Saints Go Marching In",
"Big Rock Candy Mountain", "Oh! Susannah", and "Blue Bells of Scotland". The
bells were played nearly flawlessly and they were really a crowd favorite.
The fourth grade had a new program this year in regards to the playing of their
recorders. First, and foremost, the music department wishes to thank the Van
Buren Parent’s Association for purchasing a recorder for every fourth grader. The
investment is really priceless in that this introduction to music oftentimes lasts a
lifetime. Miss VanVlerah also introduced a “karate style” program in which the students earned colored “belts” that they earned by testing out of certain levels. Many
students had their recorders decorated with a rainbow of colored “belts”.
The students performed two songs "Return of the Clonebots" and "Da Da Da
Da Da Da Bomp". Miss VanVlerah included some free style choreography in the
last selection, which
allowed students to
show their creativity
and talent.
Lastly, the fifth
graders performed
by singing two songs
directed by Miss
Darci VanVlerah and
accompanied, on the
piano, by Donna VanVlerah. They sang "Peter Piper" and "Let it Shine!". They are
a very talented and well-practiced group which sang two-part selections. They are
more than ready for middle school choir and other music programs. Look for many
of these students in the show choir as they get a little older.
Throughout the musical performances, there were several students that had
speaking parts. Cheyne Price, Jonah Frederick, Zac Adkins, Kadin Faine, Justin
Overmyer, Kaleb Coe, Grant Young, and Drew Carpenter all shared important facts
about the value and benefits of Music and Art with the audience.
After the concert the performers and their guests proceeded across the bridge
to partake in the school-wide Art Gallery presented by Miss Erin Troyer. Every student in grades one through five had two pieces of artwork in the show. Kindergarteners also each displayed one work of art by their classroom. Miss Troyer worked
tirelessly with Miss VanVlerah, Donna VanVlerah, Meg Ramlow, Tammy Routson,
and several teachers and staff from the elementary building to set up the show.
More than 800 pieces of art were prepared for show using a wide range of media
from chalk pastels to clay. The artwork was organized and displayed by grade level.
The Van Buren Parent/Teacher Organization (P.T.O.) generously provided refreshments for the many hundreds of people in attendance. The Extravaganza
Committee wishes to thank the many people who baked cookies for the occasion
and to the members of the P.T.O. who organized the cookie collection, set-up, and
clean-up of the refreshment stations.

morning. On Saturday, Rachell
Resnik ran her personal best time

breaking the school record and
placing Rachell on the medal
stand in 8th place.
A few minutes later, Ted
Simmons (Sr), set a record of his own. Ted finished 3rd with a personal best, school
record time of 1:55.20 and a medal of his own.
Congratulations Black Knight Track Team. Very Proud of all of you!
Softball Finishes Strong
After a few injuries and some tough losses, the Van Buren Softball team found
themselves in a slump early this season. The girls had played 15 games, but the
results were not what the Black Knights had hoped for. They found themselves
with a dismal record of 5-10. Determined to show their true potential, the Black
Knights had a great second half and won 8 out of their last 10 regular season
games. They were seeded #2 in their District and were able to host an OHSAA
tournament game for the first time in school history. After beating Ayersville in the
Sectional Final on their home field, the Black Knights headed to Elida to play in the
District Semi-Final against North Baltimore. Having lost to North Baltimore in extra
innings earlier in the year, the Black Knights were determined to play hard and
come out on top. Some big hits and great defense helped the girls pull out a victory and the Black Knights found themselves in the District Final for just the second
time in the programs history. The District Final was a great game against Patrick
Henry and the Black Knights played well, but in the end came up just a bit short,
losing 3-2. Although it was a disappointing loss, the 2014 softball team made a
great run and has much to be proud of. Congratulations on a great season, ladies!
Go Knights!
