DEDICATED TO THE PRESERVATION OF OUR MANTECA AREA HISTORY
“The Public Library”, A Photographic Essay
by Robert dawson—Aug. 13 program, 7pm
Many of us have vivid recollections of childhood visits to
a public library: the unmistakable musty scent, the excitement of checking out a stack of newly discovered books.
Today, the more than 17,000 libraries in America also function as de facto community centers offering free access to
the internet, job-hunting assistance, or a warm place to
take shelter.
And yet,
across the country, cities large and
small are closing public libraries or
curtailing their hours of operation.
Over the last eighteen years, photographer Robert Dawson has crisscrossed the country documenting
hundreds of these endangered institutions. The Public Library presents a
wide selection of Dawson's photographs—
Join us at the Museum on Thursday, August 13, at 7pm, to see and
hear more about the photos and
story behind “The Public Library”
up-close, and personal with
Robert Dawson.
Robert Dawson is a retired Instructor of Photography at San Jose State University, and has
been an Instructor of Photography at Stanford University since 1996. Dawson was born
and raised in West Sacramento and has lived in California his entire life. Dawson received
a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz and an M.A. from San Francisco State
University.
The Library of Congress recently acquired the entire archive of his 18-year photographic
project: “The Public Library: An American Commons.” He is currently working on two commissions: “Raising Literacy”—a photographic survey of literacy efforts in the city of Stockton (California), and the surrounding San Joaquin County, and “The Folger Shakespeare
Library Today”—a survey of the people, the work, the public programs, the research facilities and the collection.

VOLUNTEERS WHO WORKED THE
4th OF JULY FIREWORKS BOOTH,
Clancy Rogers
Museum Manager
OR ASSISTED WITH THIS FUND-RAISER.
Our 4th of July Fireworks sales booth was a
huge success and I would like to thank everyone
who worked in the booth during the 7-days it
was open. That includes museum members and
others who were not members, but volunteers
who gave of their own time to help the museum. I would also like to thank four very special
members of the museum, who worked for many
days before, and after, the booth opened and
closed. They are: Tommie Gallardo and Lillian
Vieira, who designed and constructed our float;
and Mike Brockman and Walt Silva, who worked
everyday, opening and closing the booth, as well
as being there almost all day long. Their assistance will not be forgotten by me, or members
of the Manteca Historical Society.
Again a big “ THANK YOU” to everyone.

Historical Society board member, Vicki Miller, top photo, hosted the Manteca Garden
Club for the July Program Night at the museum. Here, she introduces Club president,
Paula Elias, who is also an active museum docent.
Garden Club
president, Paula Elias, center

a nice crowd of
historical society members
and guests
about the Manteca Garden
Club on July 9th
at the museum.
Eric Teberg,

also a Garden

and landscape
designer,
showed and
talked about
several shrubs
that can be
grown in our
area.
The Fire Truck is
back at the Museum
Our docents have been
asked where the City’s
first new fire truck has been. Well, it is
now back at the museum, but the 1927
LaFrance was with our local fire department for several months. It needed various repairs to get it back to running order. Keep in mind that there aren’t that
many mechanics around these days who
still work on engines of this age, so it
tends to take awhile to find or fabricate
parts, then get the work done, on top of
finding funds to fix it.
The fire truck is actually the property of
the City of Manteca, and has been on a
custodial loan to the museum from the
City Council since July 6, 1998. It still
makes appearances in parades and for
special occasions., but is otherwise on
display for the public at the museum.
One project on the wish-list is how to
get the old engine repainted. Efforts to
shine it up haven’t been too successful
anymore, so if you have any ideas, pass
them along, and I’ll do the same.

This is a very significant way to remember those who
have passed away, or to honor one for a special event, or
tribute. Gifts are normally tax deductible, and the names
of those remembered are then inscribed in the ”Honor
Roll Book”, which is on permanent display at the museum. Printed form-envelopes are available at the museum, and on the museum’s website. Many thanks to contributors!
Click on the Memorials tab at:

MUSEUM HISTORY
Meet your volunteers
The following article appeared in our newsletter on
April 3, 1993 It provides a good idea of what it took to
get the museum off the ground.
MUSEUM BUILDING RENOVATIONS
Dale Johnson and his happy work crew are continuing
the transformation of the old building. Milo Candini,
Jr. is finishing up the tape and texturing with the painters waiting, brushes in hand! Electrician Pete Gretchen
has installed a new 400 amp service and is in the process of updating the old wiring and adding much
more. S.J. Kirkes Masonry has installed the glass wall
blocks (all labor gratis) and the extra light is a blessing.
Eugene Munz and his helper have competed the very
big job of installing all the new exterior doors plus
some interior ones along with trim work and other
good chores. Jim Lyberger, our all around craftsman, is
still trying to stay ahead of the “taskmaster”. (When in
the Museum, notice the new oak “donations” cabinet. ) Plumber Harold Hahn is patiently waiting for
everyone to get out of his way so he can install fixtures in the new handicap accessible restroom. Vinyl
siding contractor, Joe Andrada, has completed phase I
and within the next 10 days will began covering the
front half of the building. So………. moving right along
….and GREATFULL !

enjoy volunteering in the community . David is also a pastboard member of this historical society, having served for
nine years in that capacity, as well in his docent role. He is
also the financial secretary for the Knights of Columbus Chapter 4041.
David was raised in the Concord area, and Eloisa, in Antioch.
They have lived in Tracy for over 20 years and been married
for 27.
As a docent, David enjoys talking about Manteca’s first hospital with museum visitors, and Eloisa points out the historic fire
and movie poster from the Towering Inferno and El Rey Theater. We thank David and Eloisa for their volunteer spirit!
