Summer 2016 - Riverside Local Schools
Summer 2016 • Vol. 18, Iss. 3 District www.riversidelocalschools.com www.facebook.com/riversidelocalschools @RLSD_Beavers Riverside Local Schools Facilities Plan Moving Forward INSIDE This Issue... Riverside Community On Verge Of Transforming District Saluting the The Riverside Board of Education voted in February to move forward with the District’s Facilities Plan which consists of a three-phase plan to build new schools. The District’s Facilities Committee has been working on a plan to solve the issues of declining enrollment and worsening conditions of all the current facilities within the District. Phase I — Raise approximately $36 million, which would require the passage of approximately a 2-mill bond levy in November of 2016 for construction purposes that would construct two new elementary schools each serving 600 to 650 students. The District would then close Hadden, Hale Road, Leroy and Madison Avenue elementary schools. Phase II — Raise approximately $77 million which would require the passage of approximately a 4.3-mill bond levy (at a later date) for construction purposes that would construct a new 6-12 campus (a 6-8 Middle Senior Class of . . . ’16 Plus... Phase III — Repurpose LaMuth Middle School into an elementary school that would require no additional funding and then close Melridge Elementary and/or Buckeye Elementary (depending on enrollment at that time). In conclusion, the District would have three elementary schools at about 600 to 650 students each and a 6-12 campus. Exact locations – at this point – have yet to be determined but the District is looking at the current Madison Avenue location as well as a location in the Eastern Concord/Western Leroy area. An estimated timeline would have Phase I being completed by August of 2019 and Phase II being completed by August of 2021. More details of the plan and the timeline – as well as research on current facilities – can be found at www.riversidelocalschools.com. Have A Question? Let’s Chat! District RLEEF Distributes $19,000 Worth Of Grants The Riverside Local Excellence for Education Foundation has distributed $19,321.67 worth of grants to eight different initiatives across the Riverside Local School District. Established in 1984, RLEEF is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization whose funding is provided by individual, business and corporate donations and fundraising activities sponsored by the Board of Trustees. RLEEF provides grants in support of innovative educational programs and materials for the students and faculty of Riverside Local Schools. These grants enhance the regular curriculum and afford a more meaningful and diverse education for students. RLEEF also sponsors a variety of scholarships which are awarded annually to graduating seniors from Riverside High School. RLEEF met in April to review 14 grant applications submitted by District staff members. “Our goal is to provide financial assistance to initiatives that are innovative, creative and benefit a large range of students in diverse subject areas, including science, technology and literacy,” said David J. Enzerra who serves as RLEEF treasurer and trustee and is Senior Global Operations Manager at Lubrizol. “RLEEF is pleased to be able to support opportunities that benefit the students at Riverside Local Schools, and we are grateful to all of the teachers who submitted a proposal.” The following grants were awarded: Two LCD Microscopes for Riverside Campus Biology Classes – Mrs. Selent Final Cut Pro X for Riverside Campus – Mrs. McIntyre Mobile Digital Scale Lab – Mr. Baioni iPads in the Art Room – Mrs. Majoros Keep up the Beat! Program – Mr. Weimer Building Background for Content Area Subjects for ELLs – Mrs. Gerboth Let’s Get Informed – Mrs. King Science Kits for 3rd, 4th and 5th grades – Mrs. Hartmann Riverside Campus Block Schedule To Be Implemented At Campus Congrats On A Great Spelling Run, Logan! Eighth-grader Logan Bell won the District, Lake County, and TriCounty Spelling Bees, which earned him a trip to Washington D.C. to compete against 284 other students from across the country in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, where he competed until the third round. Congrats, Logan! 2 Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, Riverside Campus will implement a block schedule to increase instructional time for students and to better prepare students for college and career readiness. Currently, students at Riverside Campus attend eight 40- to 47-minute long classes per day. With the upcoming block schedule, students will attend four 90-minute long classes per day which allows for 24 extra minutes of instructional time per day as well as cutting class transition time in half. “We wanted to look at our schedule and see if there was a way to increase actual instructional time for our students,” said Riverside Campus Principal Peter Hliatzos. “By the end of the school year with a block schedule, students will have received 72 hours more of instruction for the year with no additional funds needed.” Before deciding on the block schedule, the high school created a scheduling committee in November of 2015 which was made up of Riverside Campus teachers and administrators to find out how to best move forward with class scheduling. Along with increasing instructional time, the block schedule will provide flexibility for innovative teaching strategies, allow students more time to reflect and independently learn and ultimately improve school climate. “The block schedule allows for more time for technology in the classroom, more time to spend on specific subjects and lesson plans and prepares students better for college and technical schools as this better aligns with their class schedules,” Hliatzos said. The way the block schedule will work is, students will attend classes in blocks 1-4 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and then blocks 5-8 on Tuesday and Thursday. The following week, it will flip flop. The third block of each day would be two hours long – 90 minutes of instructional time and 30 minutes for lunch. Teachers will teach three blocks per day and the fourth block will consist of 45 minutes of planning and 45 minutes of supervision. P I P E L I N E • Summer 2016 Community 100 American Flags Donated Veteran Dean Bader and his wife Barbara, owners of Digital Imaging Specialist, have graciously donated 100 American flags to the Riverside Campus. The flags will be displayed in each classroom throughout the building. “A lot of men, women and their families have sacrificed so that our flag can fly free and be displayed with pride,” he said. “The current flags throughout the building are very old and are due for retirement.” Thank you Dean and Barbara for your continued support of Riverside Local Schools! Riverside Campus Senior Project Largest To Date A record number of 102 seniors participated in the fifth year of the Senior Project Program and took advantage of the unique opportunity to expand their educational experience outside the classroom. Endorsed by the administration and the Board of Education and spearheaded by Riverside Principal Peter Hliatzos, the Senior Project Program took place during the last two weeks of the school year and provided interested and eligible seniors the chance to take part in meaningful independent projects of their Grab A Bite Did you know each building in the Riverside Local School District offers breakfast daily to our student body? There is a variety of choices including breakfast sandwiches, cold cereal, muffins, cereal bars, waffles, and pancakes. Breakfast at the elementary buildings is $1.50. For students in grades 6-12 at LaMuth Middle School and the Riverside Campus, the cost is $2.00. The breakfast combo meal includes an entrée, milk, fruit, and juice. Breakfast at school is a great way to start the day, and studies have proven that when students eat a well-balanced breakfast they miss less school, do better in math, and have overall improvement in concentration and learning. If you think your family may qualify, you can apply for free or reduced-price meals by going to www.schoollunchapp.com or by requesting a paper application. If you have any questions regarding our breakfast and lunch program, please contact Michelle Gifford at 440-358-8212 or via email at michelle.gifford@ riversideschools.net. own selection and design. Senior Project gives seniors an opportunity to expose them to real life experiences and scenarios that are not part of their normal classroom while engaging them in educational pursuit, community service and career exploration. The Senior Project Program would not be possible without the guidance and support of our Community Sponsors. Thank you to all for your continued support! District Art Students ‘Paint A Plow’ Riverside High School Art students painted four Painesville Township snow plows in April as part of the Township’s ‘Paint a Plow’ program. The completed plows will be on display at Painesville Township Family Fun Day held on August 27 at the Lake County History Center. The plows will then be mounted back on the Painesville Township trucks and be used to plow snow next winter. Students will have the opportunity to see their artwork clearing snow! This project was made possible through Painesville Township Trustees and donations of paint and discounted painting supplies from Sherwin Williams. Painesville Township also provided plows at Madison Avenue, Hadden, Hale Road and Buckeye elementary schools for students to paint.
