The Foundation directly supports the historical programs of the Marine Corps in ways that might not otherwise be available through appropriated funds. To fulfill this purpose, the Foundation vigorously seeks financial support to complete the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center and to promote and endow the Marine Corps’ long-term historical research and educational activities. Vision To fulfill the mission and vision for the continual development of the Marine Corps Heritage Center and completion of the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the Foundation raises funds by reaching out to individuals, corporations, organizations, and foundations in order to preserve and promulgate the history, traditions, and culture of the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation will honor the trust of its supporters by: ■ Planning and funding the completion of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center. ■ Growing an endowment fund that supports and expands programs focused on the culture, history, and values of the Marine Corps. ■ Continuing to set an example through our leadership, strategic direction, and financial oversight of this effort because Marines, their families, and all Americans deserve no less. Thanks to the enduring support of many, we have remained firmly committed to upholding our mission to preserve and promulgate the history, traditions, and culture of the United States Marine Corps. PRESIDENT’S NOTES LtGen Robert R. Blackman Jr., usmc (ret) The Foundation’s current primary focus is to complete the Museum by constructing galleries that tell the story of Marines who served from 1976 through today. With ten years now having passed since the invasion of Iraq and 30 years since the bombings in Beirut and the invasion of Grenada, we are eager to permanently honor these generations of Marines in the Museum. They have earned their place in history and our Nation deserves an educational institution to teach our citizenry about the extraordinary contributions these incredible men and women have made on our behalf. Marines who have served since the end of the Vietnam War have done so as part of an all-volunteer force. They have fought in operating environments dramatically different from those of the first 200 years of Marine Corps history. Currently, they are carrying out our Nation’s longest war. All Marines who have joined the Corps or re-enlisted in the last 12 years have done so knowing with near certainty that they will go to war. The Foundation’s accomplishments and activities of the past year are detailed in the pages that follow. All these undertakings were made possible by the dedication of the Foundation staff, our teammates at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, our Governors Council Liaisons, and the legions of supporters and community partners. As you begin your review of this annual report, we would like to call attention to a few highlights: Thanks to the generosity of our newest donors and those who have supported us from the beginning, the Foundation has successfully raised $48 million toward our $64 million goal for completing the Marine Corps Heritage Center. ■ More than 3.5 million people have visited the Museum and 189,840 school-aged children as part of organized school tour groups since it opened its doors in November 2006. ■ Semper Fidelis Memorial Park has been a place of much excitement this past year with the groundbreaking of the Heritage Center Parkway and the Timothy T. Day Overlook on August 13, and the dedications of the SSgt Reckless monument on July 26, the Molly Marine monument on July 5, “Always Faithful” military working dog monument in February, and the Lieutenant General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller monument last fall. ■ Our Awards Program continues to be a great success, yet again receiving a greater number of submissions than in years past, including nominations from renowned artists and writers. The 2013 award recipients ranged from writers for the New York Times and HBO, to Marine Lance Corporals and Privates demonstrating both the broad reach of our Awards Program and its everincreasing prestige. We are looking forward to seeing the nominations for the 2014 program. Submissions are being accepted through January 8, 2014. Visit our website for more details. ■ Thank you. We look forward to another great year in 2014. Semper Fidelis, m a r i n e c o r p s h e r i t a g e f o u n d at i o n Timothy and Sandy Day, sponsors of the Timothy T. Day Overlook, help break ground on the Overlook and Heritage Center Parkway, August 13. The Overlook will enhance the visitor experience with views of Semper Fidelis Memorial Park, Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel and the Museum. The final portion of the Heritage Center Parkway and widening of Route 1 to support an additional entrance to the Heritage Center are expected to be completed in late 2014. 2013 5 Thanks to the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, Captain John Cusack USN, the Women Marines Association, and the Young Marines, Molly Marine now stands proudly near the entrance of the Heritage Center grounds as a constant reminder of the women who have faithfully served and continue to serve our Nation as Marines. Our began iin 2010 are growing every O annuall summer concerts that h b i iin attendance d year. One of the four 2013 performances even set an attendance record, topping 1,000 attendees. Among the guest performers this summer were the cast of the Riverside Dinner Theater; the Fifes and Drums of Fredericksburg; The University of Mary Washington Pipe Band; members of the “President’s Own” United States Marine Band, Silent Drill Platoon, and Drum and Bugle Corps; the Quantico Marine Corps Band; and award-winning Elvis impersonator, Michael Hoover. The Sgt Reckless Memorial Fund placed a monument honoring the Marine Corps’ well-known Korean War horse in Semper Fidelis Memorial Park on July 26. A member of the Recoilless Rifle Platoon in the 5th Marines Anti-Tank Company, SSgt Reckless was trained to carry heavy loads and, on command, lie down quickly when under enemy fire. She became an integral part of the platoon. We were honored to give a tour to some of our local Governor Council Liaisons and update them on our plans to complete the Museum. McKay, usmc (ret) I n the last issue of the Sentinel, I reported the award of a grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia that would permit us to complete Heritage Center Parkway, widen Route 1 at the new entrance, and at the same time, construct the Timothy T. Day Overlook near the Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel. We have started construction on those projects and had an official ground breaking ceremony on August 13, 2013. Construction is anticipated to last for about 14 months. As we enter this period of active construction, we have already commenced planning for the construction of the final phase of the National Museum of the Marine Corps. This final phase will add an additional 88,000 square feet of exhibit and administrative spaces to the Museum. This includes approximately 58,000 square feet of exhibit space covering the period from post-Vietnam to the present, a giant-screen theater that will seat 350 Museum visitors, and new classrooms to support the Museum’s ever expanding educational programs. We anticipate that all planning will be concluded next year and final construction will begin in 2015. The Museum construction is scheduled to be completed in 2017. Semper Fidelis, m a r i n e c o r p s h e r i t a g e f o u n d at i o n 2013 7 CHAIRMAN’S NOTES General Walter Boomer, usmc (ret) W hen the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation helped dedicate a monument to Lieutenant General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller in Semper Fidelis Memorial Park last fall, Marines who served with LtGen Puller attended to see the legendary Marine honored. In June, when the Molly Marine monument was officially dedicated near the entrance of the Heritage Center, more than 100 women Marines gathered to commemorate the addition of a permanent tribute to their sisters in arms. One month later, as Marines lowered a camouflage shroud hiding the newly dedicated monument to SSgt Reckless, those who served by her side commented that they felt her monument represented the many Marines who served in that “Forgotten War.” These events and others from this past year remind us of the significance of telling the entire Marine Corps’ story and that the Marine Corps Heritage Center will only be complete once it represents every man and woman who has earned the title Marine. For our Marines and their loved ones, a Museum that honors and preserves their service provides them a place to recall and reflect on their time in uniform and those with whom they served. For the American public, being able to experience the Marine Corps from 1775 through today allows them to see a more complete picture of their own Nation’s history through the eyes of Marines. The Foundation has called upon you in the past and will continue to call upon you in the future to help us stay true to our mission. We are grateful that your support has never wavered. Momentum for our campaign to build galleries dedicated to Marines who served since 1976 continues to grow. With your continued generosity, and the contributions of the new supporters who join in our mission every day, the Museum will one day pay tribute to those Marines who served in Beirut, Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Together, we will complete this mission. Semper Fidelis, Create Your Legacy with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation–Join the 1775 Society PHOTO: MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION A Boy Scout leader and former Marine Sergeant inspired Robert Tyler to enlist in the Marine Corps. He was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program and found himself in OCS, then Army Flight School, then Vietnam. As the first Marine in his family, Colonel Robert Tyler, USMC (Ret) served 30 years as a pilot. He flew CH-46s in Vietnam (HMM-262), and after transitioning into fixed wing aircraft, he commanded the KC-130 training squadron (VMGRT-253, 2nd MAW, Cherry Point NC). Like most Marines, his time spent in the Corps had a huge impact on all aspects of his life. For example, he recognized that the Corps plays a significant role in shaping the lives of many young people in our country. In 1993, he heard about the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (MCHF). He knew right away that the Foundation’s mission was important, and he became an early supporter. When Bob learned about the planned National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center, he embraced the idea enthusiastically. According to him “it is important to tell America’s story through the eyes of Marines…they are good examples for future generations of freedomloving people. I value where the Foundation is going, and I am delighted to help it get there. Completing the Museum will enable us to tell the stories of and honor the Marines who served after Vietnam, right up to the present.” Bob feels that it is part of his responsibility as a career Marine to support the Foundation. It is ensuring that the Corps’ story is told so that everyone can know what Marines have done for our country for over 238 years. With fewer Americans serving in the military, it is even more important to educate them about the Corps. “There’s a quiet confidence, a trust, and a sense of duty/ responsibility that Marines share. It’s a bond forged in Boot Camp that you retain for life. It’s a commitment to something greater than self, and to helping others to succeed. And there is the pride in both being a Marine and in the Marine legacy–one never wants to tarnish that legacy. To me, that’s part of why supporting the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is so important.” When Colonel and Mrs. Tyler updated their wills, there was no debate about one charitable organization that they both agreed should be included. To Bob, the MCHF represents a way to help others understand the meaning of service and their duty as responsible citizens of the Republic. Carol concurs, “I married a Private on Boot Leave and I consider Bob’s 30 years in the Corps as a joint career. This gift reflects both of our values.” Colonel and Mrs. Tyler encourage all Marines to find a way to leave their own legacy. If you would like information about how to do so, please contact Gayle Union, [email protected]. ★ m a r i n e c o r p s h e r i t a g e f o u n d at i o n 8 sentinel Preserving Marine Corps History, Traditions, Culture, and Service The 2013 Awards Program Was a Huge Success by Angie Morgan awa r d s c o m m i t t e e c ha i r The evening began with a private ceremony in the Scuttlebutt Theater for award recipients whose works have been experienced across diverse mediums, such as the silver screen, in regional and national publications, and via social media. However, when the Museum opened on 10 Nov 2006, the historical galleries focused on 35 years–WWII through the end of Vietnam and expanded by opening three more galleries on 5 June 2010 that highlighted the birth of the Corps in 1775 and Defending the New Republic to World War I. The NMMC has become the Marine House, helping to enlighten the next generation about the honor, courage, and commitment of the Marines. Now we begin the Final Phase, telling the stories from 1976 to present. Final Phase Concept FA-18, provided by the National Museum of the Marine Corps Operation Desert Storm: Marines at the Burgan oil fields that were set on fire by retreating Iraqi forces. Photo by Bruno Barbey THE FINAL PHASE The Final Phase puts another 88,000 square feet under roof, and includes a giant-screen theater with a signature film, a formal art gallery space, Sports Hall of Fame, education spaces, a large changing gallery wherein the Museum can roll in large vehicles and small aircraft, and a simulator. At the heart of the Final Phase are the two historical galleries that tell the Marines’ story from 1976 through present. The Final Phase core statement asserts that the Marine Corps provides a vital contribution to the Nation and the preservation of freedom. This core statement is supported by primary messages, which were used to determine what parts of the story to emphasize. ■ Marines are a global expeditionary force-in-readiness ■ Every Marine is a rifleman ■ Leadership from the front and innovation are required on the battlefield ■ Our partnership with the Navy ■ Our warrior ethos and motto, Semper Fidelis ■ There is no better friend or no worse enemy than a United States Marine ■ The Marine Corps is a diverse force We want our visitors to appreciate that being a modern Marine is very mentally, emotionally, and physically demanding. Great museums are never done, and yours will only get better. Semper Fidelis. ★ SECOND FINAL PHASE GALLERY 11 September 2001 and continues until present. Neimeyer d i r e c to r & c h i e f o f ma r i n e c o r p s h i s to ry, ma r i n e c o r p s u n i v e r s i t y T his past year has been one of change and progress for the Marine Corps History Division. Since last October, my job as Director of the History Division now also includes that of the Gray Research Center to include oversight of special historical collections and archives. The President, Marine Corps University, Brigadier General William F. Mullen III made this decision to rejoin the archives with the History Division in order to achieve some synergy in our historical collection efforts. I am happy to report that this is exactly what has taken place. Reference Branch Since being hired last year, Reference Branch Head Colonel Peter Ferraro, USMC (Ret), has hit the ground running and shares the management of all historically related collections along with Chief of the Library of the Marine Corps, Ms. Carol Ramkey. The new arrangement has enabled our organization to begin conducting a longoverdue house cleaning. Moreover, Pete and Carol are in the process of speeding up our efforts to digitize and reorganize our collections so that they will be more accessible to researchers and other persons interested in Marine Corps history. By using the good offices of the Library of Congress and the National Archives (NARA), and the HQMC Records Branch, Pete has been able to utilize their resources and services to digitize a number of our historical records, most notably the World War II casualty cards. Digitization is our long march and we do not expect this process to be completed for at least five more years. Digitization of our historical collections will result in this data being protected in perpetuity and provide the History Division with a valuable and necessary back-up to its mostly paper- based collection begun by Major Edwin McClellan, the first Director of the History Division, in 1919. Thanks to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, the History Division reference branch has been able to utilize the services of Ms. Camille Lorei. Camille has done yeoman work for the History Division this past year in digitizing its large 15,000 file biographical collection of historical material on notable Marines. We hope to have this collection completely digitized by the end of 2014. Editing and Design The editing and design shop welcomes a new senior editor, Ms. Angela J. Anderson. Angela has reorganized and reinvigorated the Division’s publication process and has overseen the publication (and republication) of a number of USMC history books to include a reprint of our popular U.S. Marines in the Korean War compendium, Major David Kummer’s architectural history of the Commanding General’s historic quarters at New Orleans, Dr. Nick Schlosser’s account of the battle of Al Qaim and our most recent edition of Fortitudine. Our first Vietnam commemorative history by Colonel George Hofmann, USMC (Ret), will be out soon. More histories on the Vietnam conflict will soon follow. Most importantly, Angela was able to bring our acclaimed oral history of senior African American Marine officers, Pathbreakers, across the finish line on time and on budget. Due to anticipated budget drawdowns, we will be publishing most of our future histories and periodicals in digital form. Those interested in seeing this material electronically (and available to be downloaded) should access the USMC History Division’s website at www.history. usmc.mil. Writing Branch The writing branch and especially Dr. Nick Schlosser and Mr. Chuck Melson have been very active this year. This is Chuck’s 20th year with the History Division. His most recent publication, Knight’s Move, has been highly acclaimed and he will be representing the Marine Corps History program at a conference in Canberra, Australia (courtesy of the Australian Defense Ministry), later this year. We have also added a new historian to our ranks, Mr. Doug Nash. Doug comes to us originally from the U.S. Army (Colonel, Ret). He is a published author of a number of books on World War II and is currently acting as the Division’s liaison historian to the National Museum of the Marine Corps and working on an anthology related to Operation Enduring Freedom. New writer but a long time veteran of the program is Mr. Mike Miller. Mike moved over to the History Division last month and has volunteered to head the Division’s efforts in commemorating the participation of the Marine Corps in World m a r i n e c o r p s h e r i t a g e f o u n d at i o n 2 0 1 3 13 Did You Know? The MCHF was established in 1979 with 300 donors. Today we have 192,489! War I. The centennial anniversary of this watershed event in Marine Corps history is fast approaching. The History Division will soon be looking for interested outside authors. If interested please contact Mr. Miller at [email protected]. As Director, I continue to be amazed at the professionalism and productivity of the Division in light of the budget cuts, furloughs, and continued personnel shortfalls. However, thanks to the continued support of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s grants and fellowships program, the History Division has more than enough material to review for publication in the coming year. ★ m a r i n e c o r p s h e r i t a g e f o u n d at i o n 14 s e n t i n e l Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s support to Marine Corps History Division by Mr. Paul J. Weber d e p u t y d i r e c to r , ma r i n e c o r p s h i s to ry d i v i s i o n T he Heritage Foundation supported over 4,200 hours of intern work for calendar year 2012. In addition to supporting over 3,964 intern hours, the Foundation funded a full-time intern to aid in the digitization of Reference Branch’s internal working files. This effort, by itself now over 949 hours, will enable branch historians to quickly tap the digital files to answer questions, provide copies, make a CD of the information and send electronic files providing better service to patrons at less cost of labor, materials, and postage to the government. ■ The Programs ■ 2013’s intern class came from a wide variety of schools thanks to Ms. Annette Amerman’s considerable effort to inform a greater number of colleges and universities of the potential for History Division internships. Interns from Ohio University, University of North Carolina, University of West Florida and as far west as Utah State University have all interned here this year. The Shaw Fellowship Program continues in its third year, with Carlyn Woodward making a major contribution to the reorganization, sorting, and digitization of the extensive photo collection. Her efforts will make it easier to fill customer requests for particular photographs and as the work progresses will improve the photograph finding aids. ■ Updated Adobe programs allow the historians to redact sensitive information to protect the Marine’s privacy. ■ The Reference Branch will continue to maintain the paper copies, as electronic storage has become the norm, although it turns out that the best, most permanent record remains the printed page. ■ The Master’s Thesis and Doctoral Dissertation Programs continue apace, with 12 applications ready to forward to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s committee for consideration. Foundation support also extends to the writing program, at this time focusing on the upcoming 50th anniversary of Marine Corps involvement in Viet Nam; in the near future this will shift to the Centenary of the United States entering World War I. ■ The Foundation’s support allows the History Division to better and more completely report the history of our Corps and make that history better available as a study and learning resource. ★ Metadata ■ Two interns worked for a large part of the summer on organizing, scanning and digitizing a large part of the doctoral dissertations and master’s thesis work. Part of the digitization project is to add metadata to the scans, which will aid search engines to find particular papers on the History Division web site, making these scholarly works much easier to find and become part of the larger historical discussion. Sponsored by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, eighteen interns brought their enthusiasm and nose-to-the-grindstone hard-work ethic to various sections of the Museum this past summer. Joan Thomas, art curator for NMMC, says “When working on new projects interns bring to it fresh eyes and new ideas, which sometimes become better ideas.” Here we introduce a few to you! John Pastrone cross-countried his way from his hometown of Lunenburg, Mass., to Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, Calif. Pastrone is a senior pursuing a double-major in philosophy and theology, and a double-minor in math and science. He journeyed back to Triangle, Va., to do an internship in the restoration section of the NMMC because “I love everything to do with aviation, so refurbishing aircraft was fantastic. I love working with tools, and restoring a piece of history like this plane is a remarkable thing to be involved with.” ■ Christin Johnson has spent the past two summers working in the restoration section. Johnson is from Stafford, Va., and is majoring in history and Spanish at Mt. Holyoke College in Southhampton, Mass. “I’ve been working mostly on the ■ technology side of things, mainly working on 3-D printing of drawings for the exhibits department of the second phase.” NMMC intern Emily Mullen Kerry Mitchell, an intern with the art collection, hails from Long Island, N.Y. She earned her bachelor’s degree in historic preservation at the University of Mary Washington, and is now attending graduate school studying applied history at George Mason University. Mitchell does a lot of cataloging for the Museum’s art department which has allowed her to view many different pieces of art. “Not being an art history major, it’s been great learning about the different techniques artists have used,” Mitchell said. ■ Working with Mitchell in the art department is Emily Mullen, who recently graduated from Regis University in Denver with a degree in art history and fine arts. “A lot of the stuff we’re doing is ‘Collections Management 101’ so we’re getting really good basics on how museums handle their collections and what goes on in the background,” Mullen said. “I’ve gained a lot of skills on learning what different terms mean and how the systems work.” ■ Bringing “fresh eyes” to the public affairs department was Stafford’s Joanna ■ Newcombe, an international relations major from George Mason University. She says there are so many different facets that prospective interns can explore within this Museum. “It’s still astonishing to me how spread out and how involved the Museum is with the local community and the schools, there’s really something for everyone, especially for people who want to go out of their boundaries a little bit but still take away some things,” says Newcombe. “I would definitely recommend an internship at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.” ★ m a r i n e c o r p s h e r i t a g e f o u n d at i o n 2 0 1 3 19 from page 9 Awards Dinner Jackson, Sandra Jarrells, Staff Sergeant David Olliff, and Maria Palustre for their work researching and identifying all the women who served in the Corps during World War I.
