After the whirlwind that was April (Prom, Work Week @ the U, and the Fine Arts Festival),
May proved to be equally as busy. AP testing (May 6 – 17) and SOL testing (May 13 – 24)
require a lot of time and attention. Any student taking any of the following courses are required to take the End of Course SOL tests:

Finally, the Junior Class awards ceremony will be held May 28th beginning at 8:30 AM.
Freshmen and sophomores will be presented with their awards the evening of May 28th, beginning at 6:30 PM.
However, May is really all about GRADUATION if you are senior or your child is graduating
this year. Each graduate will be given 13 tickets. If more are needed, graduates will need to
network with their classmates to see if others do not need that many. There are no additional
tickets. Tickets will be distributed on May 20th and 21st during lunches. Please remember that
tickets will only be distributed to students. In addition, each graduate will receive one free
parking pass. If an additional parking pass is desired, it can be purchased on Friday, May 7th
after graduation practice for $4.00. Events that seniors should have on their calendar are:
May 22: Senior Picnic, 6 – 8 PM (must have paid Senior Dues)

May 29: Senior Awards Ceremony (Cap and Gown, collared shirt and tie for boys, NO flipflops, sneakers, or jeans)

if you elect to stay at school between classes you must report to the small commons.

Special Education
The Work Keys National Career Readiness
Certificate is a portable credential that demonstrates achievement in workplace employability
skills. Many major corporations require this assessment be taken before they will consider a
candidate for employment. Seven 12th grade
students with special needs began preparing for
this assessment in November and took the assessment in Reading, Locating Information, and
Applied Mathematics in April. 100% of the students passed the assessment. Each student will
receive a certificate from Governor McDonnell and
can include this achievement as part of his or her
resume in the future.
On Friday, May 10th, the deaf and hard of
hearing students from Gates Elementary School,
Salem Church Middle School, Monacan and Bird
High Schools, had a wonderful opportunity to
spend the day communicating and "hanging out"
with other deaf and hard of hearing students from
around the Richmond area. Thanks to the great
effort of the teachers and aids in the Richmond
district, the kids got a chance to communicate
with other deaf and hard of hearing students for a
whole day. These students, most of whom communicate in sign language, rarely have the opportunity to get together in a group, meet each other,
and do some real life "social networking". There
was a variety of sports, games and playgrounds
available for the children, but by far, most of the
time was spent chatting and comparing notes
about their lives, school, and their experiences out
in the "hearing world", and of course, exchanging
cell phone numbers. The day also gave the teachers a chance to share ideas and concerns. Teachers who work with a small population are also
isolated, it was a great chance to do some informal networking of our own. There was already talk
about next year's field day which everyone found
very exciting!
Visual Arts
The Visual Arts Department is pleased to
announce three award-winning artists from the
Petersburg Regional Art Center Student Show at
the Petersburg Regional Art Center. Anthony Lafata received best in show in the Photography
category; Jerrica Fegans won best in show in the
drawing category; and Amanda Groves won an
Overall Honorable Mention award. Congratulations
to these hard working and creative artists.
The National Art Honor Society extends its
sincere thanks to our seniors for another great
year. Graduating this June will be Garret Abel,
Secretary Angie Allen, Keith Bahm, Abigail Blaha,
Elizabeth Cosner, Maddie Elder, Vice President
Janhavi Giribhattanavar, President Destiny Hairfield, Treasurer Kimberlee Holness, Brian Mendez,
Heing Leng, Hannah Look, Bailey Payne, Heather
Ramsey, Camille Spencer, and Destiny Volkman.
The remaining members recently elected new
officers and look forward to beginning the new
school year with this year’s new inductees.
Art I students finished the year by creating
Mola designs. Students in all art classes are encouraged to have one piece framed and to make
scanned copies of all the original pieces to possibly sell or give as gifts.
Art 2 students did a wonderful job on their
clay vessels and bowls after studying Picasso’s
clay works from the early 1900’s.
Art 3 students were able to work with Ms.
Fountain, a teacher from VCU, on collages. They
also finished working on Scratch Art and created
Portfolios to go home.
Art 4 students finalized their electronic
Artsonia portfolios which can be viewed on the
Artsonia website under L.C. Bird High School.
Many of these artists have been with Ms. Morse for
four years and it is always a sentimental parting at
graduation.
Independent Art students worked on large
canvas pieces showcasing an art style that made
a connection to their lives.
Photography 1 students are wrapping up
the school year with a Portraiture Project, using
new knowledge to create a series of digital pictures. This is their first project using digital cameras. In addition, they are learning how to edit
and enhance their images using Adobe Photoshop
Elements 10.
Photography 2 students will end this school
year furthering their knowledge of Adobe Photoshop by taking a series of digital images with the
intention of compositing certain parts of these
images in order to create an entirely new composition.
Photography 3 class has finished this school
year by giving their final project to L.C. Bird as a
gift. Their images will be added to our collection in
the main office.
Computer Graphics 1 class will soon complete their final project, a children’s book using all
the software the students have learned about this
school year. The students illustrated and designed
the book layout.
The final Film & Video Production 1 class
project stems from our study of the film The Matrix. Students studied the film and its allegorical
connections to Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave.”
This allegory was used as the basis for a short film.
Mr. Zoller wishes all his students a wonderful, relaxing, and productive summer.
3D Design 1 students finished the year with
a yarn coiling project and created beautiful flowers
out of 2 liter bottles.
The first project for students taking 3D
Design 2, 3, or 3D Independent Study next school
year will be a PowerPoint presentation on a Summer Art Experience. This summer art experience
can consist of going to an art museum and taking
pictures, creating a work of art and documenting
your progress, helping out a community volunteer
group doing something creative (painting flower
pots to give to Lucy Corr Village residents). Remember art is everywhere in our daily lives, all
you have to do is find it!
3D Design 2 students finished Mosaic Mandalas and a small quilling project. 3D Design 3
students’ final project of the year will be to create
and build on the skills learned in 3D Design 1, 2,
and 3.
We wish all of our artists a relaxing and
artistic summer. Please remember to come prepared with an “art experience” power point that
you did this summer. This will be the first artist
project due in September.

Scheduling for 2013-2014: The Scheduling process for the 2013-2014 school year is complete.
Any further schedule changes are based upon
course availability and administration approval.
SOL tests and SOL Summer Academy

SOL tests were administered during the
window of May 13 to May 31. Make up SOL’s for
students who do not pass their SOL test are the
first week of June. Students that pass a course
but did not pass the SOL test should attend the

county Summer SOL Academy at Clover Hill
School. The Academy will run two morning sessions Monday thru Thursday, July 8-August 1. If

Summer Sat Prep Academy

School is a is a one-week session open to rising
CCPS juniors and seniors who have taken the
PSAT. A student can choose between three sessions. Students are required to bring a copy of
their PSAT results with them to the sessions.

The School Counseling Office will be open
Monday thru Thursday from 7:00 am – 4:00 pm.
Due to a reduction in summer staff there may be
days where the School Counseling Office is not
staffed by a School Counselor. If you need to see
a counselor during the summer, please call for an
appointment.
Advanced Placement Tests
AP Tests were conducted from May 6-17
for students taking AP classes. These test scores
will be sent home in July to participating students
and the College Board.
Rocket Boosters
We celebrate another successful year supporting The Governor’s Academy for Engineering
Studies and extend our gratitude to the many
donating food, supplies, time, energy and effort to
support the 2012-2013 Rocket Booster activities.

Teachers and Staff
The week of May 6 –10 was Staff Appreciation Week at Bird High School. The Bird PTSO
wanted to make sure our teachers and staff knew
how much we appreciated everything that they do
for our children and planned several special
events during the week.
On Wednesday, the PTSO hosted a “Grabn-Go Breakfast” for our teachers and staff in the
Sanders Gallery beginning at 6:45 am. Teachers
and staff members dropped in and picked up their
breakfast, which included boiled eggs, pastries,
muffins, donuts, bagels, sausage and bacon biscuits, yogurt, fruits, juices, coffee, and more.
Because we had so many wonderful donations come in from parents, on Friday the PTSO
hosted another less formal Grab-n-Go Breakfast.
Thank you to all of the parents who helped
make this week special for our teachers with their
donations and work. A special thanks and round of
applause to Jeff Dean, Pam Brown, Rochelle
Brown, Cindy Kurth, Stacy Wiseman, Michelle
Dickens, and Sherry Harris for their work on these
functions and to all of our parents who sent in
such wonderful foods for our teacher. Thank you
to Einstein’s Bagels for their donations of bagels
and other breads! Our teachers know how much
we really appreciate them now!

Being active in the PTSO is a great way to
know what is going on at Bird High School while
serving our children, school and community. Our
PTSO will only be as strong and successful as the

Teacher of the Month
The PTSO’s latest Teacher of the Month is
our Athletic/Activities Director, Mr. Chuck Thomas.
Mr. Thomas is one of the busiest members of our
staff. In addition to setting schedules for all sports,
Mr. Thomas maintains the playing fields, coordinates all extracurricular activities and the use of
every part of the building and grounds. Recently,
he set up for the Special Olympics and organized
Work Week @ the U, for which he personally
laundered all of the cheerleader uniforms so that
the girls would look their best when touring the
feeder schools. Bird is fortunate to have this hardworking professional.
