May 2015 - Bellmore Knights of Columbus
Volume 61 Issue 3
May 2015
Brothers,
Let’s start off by once again thanking each and everyone one of you for coming out and remaining active with
your membership and with our Council through a very transformational year. We are just about through the
Columbian Year and what a great year it has been.
Everyone should have received their Membership Directory by now. Unfortunately, as previously mentioned,
there were several printing issues in the Directory. One last correction is with the Index. Thanks to quick
thinking by our Warden Ken Yager, the correct Index is in the Log on page 6 for your convenience.
A big thanks goes out to Joe Camillery, PGK and team for running the Blood Drive on March 15 where we collected over 40 pints of
blood making this year’s total over 80 pints. Way to go!
A huge thanks goes out to all that helped brother Gus Ham and family who, along with Brian Kasper, handled the Children’s Annual
Easter Party.
Just as a reminder, Bellmore Council is sponsoring a Bellmore/ N. Bellmore Little League team this year. I look forward to receiving a schedule of their games and attending a few over these next few months.
Our monthly social meetings have become more of a social by discussing different topics of interest. In March, thanks to two of our
PGKs Arthur McQuillan and Austin E Cannon Jr., we heard great stories of PGKs and the history behind Bellmore Council. In April,
we had a presentation by our immediate PGK Austin E Cannon III on how to recognize signs of a heart attack and/or stroke and what
to do in these situations. We plan on continuing these social meetings in the future. Suggestions on what you would like to see
should be directed to Ken Yager or me.
This year all the children who are receiving their First Holy Communion at St. Barnabas will receive their own set of rosary beads
from the Bellmore Knights of Columbus.
On May 25 at 10:00 am we will be marching in the Memorial Day Parade, taking route from Newbridge Road Elementary School to
the Monuments in Town. Hopefully, it will be followed by a repast at our council.
Brothers, please remember to bring me your aluminum pop tops and plastic caps to any Council event.
In closing, I would like to take a moment and thank the Board of Directors and Council members who have taken us from our old
home on Bellmore Ave. to our new home on Frederick Ave. Your volunteer hours have really made the transition easier.
It’s been my pleasure to serve as your Grand Knight over this past year. Please remember I am always here to listen to and serve any
of my brothers in any way I can. I would like to wish everyone a very enjoyable and fun filled summer. Please see the articles in the
log for upcoming events.

On Saturday, June 20, five men will be ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of
Rockville Centre. Please pray for them as they
complete their studies and prepare for their life
of service to the people of our Diocese.
Also, remember in your prayers Seminarian
Tom Griffin as he completes his first year of
studies at Saint Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers.
We sponsor him in the Supreme Council’s
RSVP program to support vocations. Tom is a
member of Saint Barnabas Parish and his dad
and brother are members of our Council.

Retiree News
At the Retiree's April meeting our guest speaker was Deacon Bob
O'Donovan from St Frances de Chantal Parish. Deacon Bob spoke to
us about his personal life and how he became a Deacon 25 years
ago. He interjected aspects of reality with the spiritual aspects of our
lives. He was very entertaining as well inspirational. Those who
attended the meeting enjoyed him vey much.
Knights Bowling
The Knights Bowling League is looking for new members for the Fall
League. We bowl on Monday evenings at East Meadow Lanes starting at 7:00 pm. It is a fun league with a dinner at the end of the year.

Columbus Club News
Holy Hallelujah!!
Thanks to the 18 brothers that attended the zoning board hearing. Your support showed the neighbors and the town that we are unified and
determined in our efforts. Our lawyer Chris Brown of Sahn Ward Coschignano & Baker and our Traffic Engineer Sean Mulryan of Mulryan
Engineering made excellent presentations that addressed the concerns of the neighbors and the board. We were well represented and these
two firms gave us significant discounts on their fees.
After all was said and done, the zoning board overwhelmingly approved our parking variance with a list of minor and sensible conditions. The most important condition concerns our residential and neighbors need to maintain parking spots in front of their homes. The residents on Frederick Ave simply want to preserve parking in front of their homes… like any other homeowner would. The solution for us is
simple. We will use the Town of Hempstead parking lots off Grand Ave. and Bedford Ave. where there is ample parking during weeknights
and the weekends. We have also agreed not to congregate in front of our building during rental events because of the noise factor. As a gentle reminder, the area in front of our building has signage that says “Quiet Zone - Please respect our neighbors and residents” and “Please be
quiet”. Luckily, we have a fenced in patio off the rear door so, if someone needs to step out during an event then please use the patio. This is
just simple and sensible cooperation between us and our neighbors.
I also want to thank all of the professional contractors that participated in the construction of our new club - Milro as General Contractor,
High Tech Design Plumbing & Heating, Bi-County Electric, Elegant Interiors by Jane, and WeConnectit Audio Video. We couldn’t have
gutted and rebuilt the inside in such a short span of time without your professional help. And thank you for the extras and the discounts.
Special thanks to Larry Oakley, Ken Geiger, William Styne, and Anthony Edelman, PGK for all your help in coordinating with numerous
professionals during the many phases of this enormous project. Thanks to Joe Schibani for meeting with every single contractor with me and
thanks to the board of directors for reviewing and approving the final proposals. Thanks to Larry Oakley for fixing outdoor lights, door
swings, and hauling away the old building materials to Habitat for Humanity. I’m so happy that you have joined the building and grounds
volunteer team with Joe Schibani. Thanks to John Mahon for putting panic bars and new locks on exterior and interior doors. Thanks to Ken
Yager for help with hanging a 65” TV. Thanks to Bill Pollock for coordinating the installation of the soda system with Polar Bear and getting the Keggerator in place. Thanks to John Weber, PGK for keeping up with the liquor license which was parked since we ceased operations at 2333 Bellmore Ave.
Now that we have the parking variance the remaining inspection tasks will move quickly. Once all inspections pass (health department, construction, plumbing, fire), we will finally get the Certificate of Occupancy and then open our doors. In the meantime, we still need to paint
the front of the building, clean up the patio area, and reverse the swing on patio gate before we open. Anyone interested in patio cleanup or
outdoor painting please let Larry or Joe know as they plan to get it done in the next two weeks before the Columbus Club signage letters arrive. Please take this opportunity to participate in bringing the new building online.
Last but not least, thanks to Vince Palazzolo for organizing the upcoming Golf Outing at Lido Beach on June 30. See the flyer on page 3
with details and please contact Vince if attending for golf, the putting contest, or just the dinner event. Sponsorships are available - give
Vince a call for more details. All events will be held at the Lido Golf Club. Besides being an avid golfer and official score keeper for Bethpage U.S. Open, Vince is a devoted father of four sons, a husband, a CFO, and the newly elected Vice President and board member of the
Columbus Club. Welcome aboard Vince, his four sons, and his wife Patricia.
See you on the greens.
