March 2013 - Surrey Services for Seniors
March 2013 Barbara’s Blog Join Us for Lunch! INSIDE THIS ISSUE Surrey’s Healthy Living Fair 1 Surrey Healthy Living Fair Barbara’s Blog Spring Gala 2 Medical Travel Kit Eat Right Every Day 3 Berwyn Calendar 4 Broomall Calendar 5 Havertown Calendar 6 Media Calendar 7 Volunteer Spotlight Personal Finance Column Member Donations Help at Home Friday, April 19, 10 – 2 Hosted by the Upper Main Line YMCA 1416 Berwyn-Paoli Rd, Berwyn Spring is not only a great time of year for cleaning, it’s also ideal for taking stock of your health. Join Surrey Services for Seniors and the Upper Main Line YMCA for the Healthy Living Fair this spring. The Fair will offer a unique blend of products, programs, information, and health screenings all selected for their usefulness to older adults. • • • Experts from the PA Department of Health will offer information about Lyme disease, dental health, and vaccines, including the shingles vaccine. • Read about the Yellow Dot program on page two of this newsletter then stop by the health fair and pick up your kit. • A resources table will let you know what services are available to you in our community. • Chef Ben from the Surrey Café in Berwyn will provide tasty samples of soup and recipes for cooking dishes suited for one or two. • If you prefer not to cook, HomeCooked in Paoli plans to provide visitors samples of their delicious, ready to cook meals. 8 Cooking for One or Two Do you have jewelry that you no longer wear? The Consignment Shop is looking for both estate and costume jewelry. Call 610647-8632 for more information. Health care providers from Paoli Hospital will offer stroke and blood pressure screenings. YMCA fitness trainers will be on hand to answer questions about physical therapy. All that and much more! From screenings to cooking easy healthy meals, check out our Healthy Living Fair. And of course there will be giveaways and a door prize! Call the Surrey site closest to you if you need transportation. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending Broomall’s Italian lunch party. When I walked into Trinity Church, fun, happy, excited conversation greeted me as soon as the door opened. About thirtyfive people were enjoying salad, pasta casserole, breads and incredible desserts. I still have to get the recipe for the delicious rum soaked cake! The monthly meal events at Broomall are a wonderful example of the joy and community spirit that breaking bread together can create. Eating meals with another person offers so much more than the nutritional benefits the food can bring. The benefits of socialization over a meal are widely documented. Typically, fewer “good calories” are consumed at meals eaten alone than those eaten with other people. Dining at one of Surrey’s sites is not only nutritious, it is just plain fun. The conversation, camaraderie, support and friendship among Surrey diners is wonderful. As staff, we enjoy and benefit from your presence as well. I encourage each of you to share a lunch at least once a week at a Surrey location. You can even be adventurous and move from location to location during the month, based on your preference of the menus (see the newsletter or website for daily selections.) We look forward to welcoming you wherever you go, and you will enjoy the camaraderie of fun and interesting people. And don’t forget Surrey can help you with transportation to one of our sites for lunch if you need it. If you are a bit shy about not knowing someone at your lunch place of choice, please let the staff at the site know and they will be happy to introduce you to your lunch mates! Bon Appétit! Barbara J. Fentress President and CEO Save the Date! Surrey’s Spring Gala Saturday, April 27, 6 - 11pm The Merion Cricket Club, Haverford Join us for cocktails, dinner and a silent auction. This year’s auction items are more exciting than ever. A vacation in Park City, Utah, golf outings, sporting events, dining opportunities, a mini iPad, art work and so much more. There will be music by Mark Randall, pianist and Robert Campbell, bassist. To participate as a sponsor, a guest or to donate to the auction, please contact Surrey’s Development office at 610-647-9774 or 610-647-6404 ext. 259. 2 Ask Home Care Prepare a Medical Travel Kit Federal Benefits Change If you have a question that you think others would benefit from as well, call 610-647-9840 or email it to [email protected]. Surrey – Berwyn Tuesday, March 26, 10 – 2 by appt. Want some help getting together your medical travel kit? Come to Surrey’s Home Care Services office and we’ll make copies and help you put one together. Call us at 610-647-9840 to schedule an appointment between 10 and 2. If you receive your federal benefits by paper check, you'll need to switch to electronic payments by March 1, 2013. Get your Medical Information Ready! Dear Home Care: I think it might be a good idea to have a bag packed ahead of time and include important information just in case I need to go to the hospital. What should I include? It is important to have a medical travel kit prepared before you actually need it. Having this makes the process of getting medical treatment or being admitted to a hospital go much smoother. Two important items to include are: • A photocopy of your medical insurance card, front and back • A copy of your photo ID (driver’s license, etc.) It’s better to use copies in the medical travel kit and keep your originals stored safely somewhere else. If an emergency occurs, the copy can be taken to the hospital and filed with the other emergency documentation used by the EMT or other medical professional. Your personal medical travel kit should also include: • Important phone numbers: family, doctors, minister, friends • A list of prescription medications and dosage • A list of over the counter medications • Any known allergies to medications • Your medical history, including chronic illnesses, any surgeries and previous hospitalizations with diagnoses and dates Keep Emergency Information in Your Car: The Yellow Dot Program is a new cooperative effort among the PA Departments of Transportation, Health and Aging, the PA State Police, the PA Turnpike Commission, first responders and local law enforcement. It was created to assist you in the “golden hour” of emergency care following a traffic accident when you may not be able to communicate for yourself. Placing a yellow dot in your vehicle’s rear window alerts first responders to check your glove compartment for vital information to ensure you receive the medical attention you need. You will need to complete a personal information form, including your name, contact information, emergency contact information, medical history and medications, allergies and doctors’ contact information. A photo – showing only your head and shoulders – is then taped to the front of the completed information sheet. The file can contain information about more than one person if you share the car with someone else. Once the sheet is completed, you place the yellow dot decal provided in the program kit in the lower left corner of the vehicle’s rear window. The top of the sticker should be no higher than 3.5 inches from the bottom of the window. How Do I Get the Yellow Dot Program Kit? You can pick up a Yellow Dot packet at any Surrey location, driver’s license centers, Area Agencies on Aging, Regional EMS Centers/ County Health Centers (Call 1-877-PA-HEALTH to find a center near you), or to have a kit mailed to your home go to www.yellowdot.pa.gov. Eat Right, Your Way, Everyday This year’s theme encourages personalized healthy eating and recognizes that food preference, lifestyles, cultural and ethnic traditions, and health concerns all impact individual food choices. We are all familiar with the guidelines for healthy eating: make half your plate fruits and vegetables, make half of your grains whole, choose low fat or non-fat dairy products, eat a variety of protein sources and cut back on sodium and empty calories from fat and sugar. This is the framework of a healthy diet. The way we prepare our food, how we season and combine them, and even when we eat our meals is a highly individual matter. For example the “make half your plate fruits and/or vegetables” recommendation can be met in many different ways: a large serving of greens such as spinach collard, turnip or kale sautéed in a small amount of olive oil and garlic; a vegetable stir fry prepared with a small amount of sesame oil and soy sauce; or oven roasted cauliflower and/or sweet potatoes seasoned with a touch of salt, pepper and cinnamon. These suggestions and many more can meet the recommendation--but only you know what will work “your way.” Eating breakfast is good for both kids and adults. Our bodies and brains need to be refueled. Why not “break the fast” with a healthy start to the day. A healthy breakfast should include a healthy source of protein and plenty of fiber. This combination will help satisfy your hunger and help you feel full until lunch time. The protein can come from low-fat meat, low-fat dairy products, or nuts and nut butters. Eggs are also a good source of protein. They are also high in saturated fats. High fiber foods include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. What combination of these items will provide a healthy breakfast “your way”? Don’t like to eat breakfast first thing in the morning? Try eating a hard-boiled egg or cup of low fat yogurt before leaving the house. Several hours later take a break and have a piece of fruit and a handful of healthy nuts. Don’t like traditional breakfast foods? Why not try a turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato on whole wheat bread or toast? Again there are many, many combinations which add up to a healthy breakfast. You get to pick which ones do it “your way.” Healthy eating is a process of small steps and changes. We can keep working on it – everyday! Have fun and enjoy the process. Larry is a watercolorist who enjoys Havertown’s Open Art Studio. A Paoli resident, he has made Havertown a second home, always arriving early to make the space ready for his fellow artists. Larry volunteers his time to teach art workshops. His Intro to Watercolor and Landscape Painting have brought in new artists. He also teaches Photographing Artwork and Applying to Art Exhibits, whetting the appetite of the other artists to exhibit their work. He organized an artists’ trip to the Daylesford Abbey Art Show this fall, and encouraged fellow artists to pick up applications to submit their work for the 2013 Art Show. Surrey’s summer-long Art Show in Berwyn was hung with Larry’s assistance, and Surrey’s 2013 Calendar showcasing Surrey artists was produced with the help of Larry, who served as curator and photographer all the gorgeous paintings. With some organization throughout the year, the task can be much easier. Make a tax folder in January (it’s not to late now) and place the following items into the folder during the year: • Receipts for charitable donations and a sheet of paper for listing the donations. Keeping a master list will make it easy to add up all the deductions at the end of the year. If there is an organization to which you give frequently, such a weekly church offering, then ask for a report of your giving at the end of the year, rather than list each donation. • Medical and dental bills and receipts for copays. Keep a sheet of paper to list the expenses as they are incurred. It is easiest to skip prescription expenses and simply obtain a printout from the pharmacy at year end. • Receipts/ statements for other deductions such as property taxes, mortgage interest, etc. • All 1099 Forms for income earned during the year. These are received in January. • Any other tax related information. Always start the tax return as early as possible to reduce the stress of working under a deadline. If you use a tax preparer, then get all the information to them when it is complete. Not only does this allow for plenty of time to review the return, but also time to plan on how to pay any taxes due. Mr. and Mrs. William B. Donoghue Spring Into Home Maintenance Call today for a free home assessment and safety evaluation. Ugh! It’s Tax Time! If you have a computer, tax software can make the tax prep process much easier. Programs such as TurboTax will ask questions in an interview style, so you simply answer a series of questions. The program then enters the information into the tax form, so you don’t have to go through this process. Preparing tax returns on the computer also eliminates any math errors. Is It Time for Help at Home? What are some of the signs that you, a spouse, or a loved one might need some assistance? Many seniors begin to see changes in their ability or someone else’s ability to live independently, but believe things will get better on their own, are in denial that assistance is needed, or think that it is just a short term need so they will somehow “manage.” When is help needed to be safe and remain at home? Ask yourself, have you or a loved one: • • • • • • • • • • Clip and Save $5 off! Had a medical scare or not recovered from an illness or hospitalization as fast as you used to? Had worsening of a chronic health condition such as congestive heart failure, high blood pressure or diabetes? Had unexplained weight loss or gain? Had more difficulty managing daily activities such as dressing, bathing or cooking? Fallen recently? Stayed home because you were concerned about your ability to drive or use public transportation? Been overwhelmed by the volume of mail you received and left it unopened? Heard from family and friends that they are concerned? Had trouble keeping your home as clean as you used to, or had trouble caring for your pets and plants? Had an emergency and not known who to call? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it might be time for help. With a little planning, you can enjoy healthy and delicious meals. Whether you are dining alone or with a companion, you can eat tasty meals that are nutritious and satisfying. Instead of settling for leftovers or frozen dinners that often contain lots of salt, try experimenting with these tips for healthy cooking for one or two: Use extras in other dishes. Plan meals so that you can use the extra food in new dishes. For example, cook rice as a side dish for one meal, then use the remainder in a casserole or rice pudding. Bake chicken for a meal and use the leftovers in sandwiches, soups or salads. Or make a meatloaf mixture and bake some as a meatloaf and freeze the uncooked portion to use later in stuffed peppers. Make a plan. Take time to write down the week's menu and a shopping list. You'll find it makes your grocery shopping easier and ensures that you have everything you need when you're ready to cook. Finally, why not treat yourself to company from time to time? Invite friends or relatives over to sample some of your Cook a batch and freeze single portions.
