We believe that Ham-Com is truly “Amateur Radio at its best—
Commercial exhibitors, flea markets, speakers, workshops, special
interest groups, door prizes and much, much more…”
This year, 54 commercial vendors will exhibit their products at our
event. The indoor flea market will be comprised of 37 vendors and
many more are expected to fill the outdoor flea market and tailgate
areas.
The event will host over 80 hours of speakers, workshops and special interest group meetings. We deeply appreciate the contributions of all the speakers and workshop facilitators that add so much
to our hobby.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES
Bob Alexander, W5AH
Bob has been a ham for 44 years. He was originally licensed
in 1963 as WA5FZG and has held an extra class ticket
since 1975. Bob is addicted to CW. His 30 year electronics
career includes experience in high power RF design, signal
processing, wireless, EMI and EMC testing and 17 years
experience in design, manufacture and test of antenna
systems for everything from aircraft or shipboard use to space
communications.
Chris Brewer, N5GMJ
Chris Brewer has been an amateur radio operator for 30
years. He has been a NET control for Tarrant County RACES
since March 2011. He also held the position of President of
the Tri-County Amateur Radio Club from Aug -2004 through
Aug -2007. He is on the Board of Directors for the Kilocycle
Club of Fort Worth and is an active member of the Texas
Interconnect Team. Chris has operated in just about every
mode that is available to us. But his specific interests are digital
modes: Most specifically APRS and D-Star on VHF/UHF and
PSK and RTTY on HF. However he also likes to jump into a
good rag chew QSO on HF at times as well though. Chris was
asked to be the Official Observer Coordinator back in January
2013 and shortly after was asked if he was interested in serving
as the Section Manager for North Texas. He has been the
Section Manager since April 30, 2013.
Ed Cox, K3ED
Licensed originally as KN3SWJ in 1962, In 1979, I upgraded
from general thru advanced to extra class. DX was and still
is one of my passions in the hobby. I have operated from
numerous DX locations. I have held callsigns, K4HPQ,
W0RAO,K3SWJ and now KE3D. I have been licensed in the
UK (G5EQC) and had CEPT permits to operate in Germany,
Netherlands, and Belgium. I have operated from Vietnam,
Cambodia, and Thailand. I have operated from many
Carribean locations such as VP2MSG, ZF2HE, Haiti, BVI,
USVI, Jamaica etc. I really enjoy geography and having real
QSOs with DX stations (not just Hello 599 goodbye). I do have
5 band DXCC and over 322 confirmed countries worked. I
am an electronic engineer with a master’s degree and am a
licensed Professional Engineer in Florida. I got a first class FCC
phone License in 1963 and a second class radio telegraph
license. I currently work in the Semiconductor Industry
designing ICs for telephony.
Glen Currie, KD5MFW
Glenn is one of the developers of HSMM-MESH(TM) /
Broadband-Hamnet(TM). Along with other developers in the
Austin, Texas and expanding areas, continue to develop and
expand the popular high speed broadband microwave system
for amateur radio. The wireless networking system can be
used stand alone or linked with the Internet and has an almost
unlimited number of uses.
Bill Drake, KJ5ZV
Texas Military Forces, Texas Army Mars Zone 2 Coordinator.
Stephen Denison, W5SMD
I have been a ham since 2010, and have been active in SOTA
for a little over 2 years. I am currently ranked 3rd in Texas for
22
Activating points.
Randy Farmer, W8FN
Randy was first licensed as WN4TTE in 1964. Under
the tutelage of local W4OYI he quickly upgraded to the
Conditional class license and began handling CW traffic on
the various ARRL NTS nets. Along with traffic handling came
participation in the old ARRL CD Party operating events that
began his conversion into a dedicated CW contester. An
upgrade to Amateur Extra and moves in the late ‘60s and
early ‘70s brought callsign changes to first WA9VZM and
then WB8MKZ (yuk!). W8FN was acquired in the first wave of
callsign choice for Extras. As his interest in contesting grew,
Randy began to pursue contest station engineering in earnest,
always trying to maximize the potential of available hardware.
He was involved with the KS8S multioperator station in the
early ‘80s and eventually built his own competitive two tower
station in the Dayton, Ohio area that produced good results
in both domestic and DX contests through the late ‘80s and
into the mid ‘90s. Relocation to the DFW area in 1997 put
an end to multiple towers and presented the new challenge of
staying competitive within the confines of a small city lot. He
now concentrates his contesting efforts on domestic contests,
especially ARRL November Sweepstakes, and has managed
good finishes in the Low Power category for the last several
years. He currently resides with his wife and a blended family of
stepcats in Arlington, Texas.
Charles “Frosty” Frost, K5LBU
As a avid contester and DXer, Frosty has lead many DX Safaris
to Southern Africa.
John Galvin, N5TIM
N5TIM is the NTX Section Emergency Coordinator.
Richard F. Gillette, W9PE
A Ham since 1952, W9PE. BSEE Illinois Institute of Technology
MBA Loyola Chicago A licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
Over 40 years of engineering in medical, commercial and
Military/Aerospace (Electronic Countermeasures.) An Old
Crow, an IEEE Life Senior Member and a ARRL member.
Bob Gormley, WA5YWC
Bob is vice president of NTMS and is interested in all aspects of
building microwave equipment from surplus parts. He is
currently active on the vhf and microwave bands.
Rusty Haddock, AE5AE
Rusty Haddock, AE5AE (McKinney Amateur Radio Club)
Having worked for a wireless mesh networking startup Rusty
became interested and active with the HSMM-MESH development in Austin since the first HAM-COM presentation in 2009.
He has presented on the topic of HSMM-MESH at several
webinars, hamfests, and local clubs. Despite the odd looks he
gets from passersby, Rusty doesn’t mind tinkering with his WiFi
equipment in public because he’s just “geeking out”, generally
harmless, and having fun. New mesh toys this past year include
more WRT54G’s, a Raspberry Pi, and a BeagleBone Black.

investigating summits near DFW. I got my ticket while in the
USAF in Colorado Springs as KB0ODL in 1994.
Rick Hiller, W5RH
Rich has been an Ham, on and off, since 1969. He spends
most of my time in the technical aspects of the hobby dealing
with HF and antenna systems. He enjoy givng presentations on
all aspects of the HF antenna system and likes helping other
hams with their antenna problems. CW is his favorite mode.
Tom Horton, K5IID
Tom received his first license KN5IID on November 12, 1956
at age 14. He upgraded to a general license in early summer
1957 and soon contests, DXing and certificate chasing became
his prime interests and remain the same today. Tom has long
believed that contest operators are very well trained individuals
that can jump into emergency situations and provide excellent
communications skills. Tom has had the privilege of operating
from BY1QH in China in the CQWW both in Phone and CW
in 1986. Tom is on the DXCC Honor Roll and possesses 5
Band DXCC, WAZ, Worked All Counties #661 as well as many
other awards. Tom and his family now reside in Hillsboro, TX
on an average city lot, all he has ever had access to with his
average station and antenna’s. To this day and throughout all
his moves and travels, Tom has kept the K5IID callsign since it
is easy and farily recognizable on CW.

the early 1980’s. After spending a few years monitoring the
work of the ARRL’s 600-meter Part 5 Experimental Group, John
decided to independently apply for a Part 5 license in August
of 2011 and see what the band had to offer. Needless to say
he was hooked from the first time he transmited, using the call
sign WG2XIQ. John operates CW and WSPR typically with a
few excursions into other digital modes when the opportunity
presents itself. Professionally John has spent time as a software
engineer as well as a broadcast engineer and currently does
some work as a consultant while he works to complete a
doctorate in chemistry.
