It was good news from Bridgewater Chapter about the Cider Rally; after some doubt over it’s venue when the previous owners went into administration, the Sand Bay site has now been bought by Pontins, so the rally is safe once again. I would be disappointed to miss the Cider Rally; it’s a good event and one of the first big ones of the year, so it’s a chance to catch up with those HOG members from other chapters that you haven’t seen for a while. Barbara and I always enjoy the run down the A49 to the event, too, much better than the motorway. The A49 is a little like Route 66—lots of interesting things to see en route. There are some great stops for food you can make, too. As Barbara has passed her IAM advanced test, I thought it was time I did the course as well. I have previously done two other advanced courses; the old Star Rider event run by the police in the 1980’s. I passed that in 1984 on my Ironhead Sportster, then in 2003 I did the H-D sponsored Riders Edge advanced course, winning a Gold award. So why do the IAM event? It does you no harm to keep up to date on advanced riding techniques, and it ensures you haven't lapsed into bad riding habits. Quite a few of our Chapter Officers and members have done the course and passed the test; it is a requirement if you want to be a road captain. If you haven’t done the course—look into doing it. If you think it’s all about riding slowly looking every which way while wearing a fluorescent jacket—you are wrong. A smooth rider is also a quick one, as well as being safer than the average rider. I’ve got a few jobs to do on the bikes before the rally season. I fitted the new bars to the Nightster—shame the speedo spoils the look, but I haven't come across an affordable alternative that looks right. The Fatboy needs its new alarm fitting. The Spyball has finally died after 21 years, so I have a replacement. I just need to have the tanks off and strip out the old wiring before I fit it. Nitro NEW MEMBERS Please welcome the following new members: William Bell Ron Sprung Check it out our website on redrosechapter.com We hope to see you at our social events. Please make yourselves known at one of our meetings then we can say hello! Our friendly officers will greet you! Don't forget to visit The Diner Cafe at Preston H-D for a bite to eat! We have Phatboy Burgers, hot dogs, cheese dogs, toasties, bacon barms, jacket potatoes, sandwiches and pies on the menu to name but a few! FROM THE DIRECTOR Summer is just around the corner, the ride outs are underway and we’re planning tours and trips, rallies and parties! Wake the Lakes, we’ve started to finalise the details. The bands are booked and we’ve gone for some great local bands, with an individual and unique feel, we know you’ll like them—We do!! But before we get to July we do need you all to book your tickets so we know how many people are coming. The earlier you book the better we can make Wake the Lakes. If you are looking for a rally to go to in the summer we’d recommend Clyde Valley’s “The Gathering” Rally! It’s a great venue set at the head of one of the sea loch’s in Scotland – Loch Goil and in a private holiday complex, swimming, golf, bars, music and great rides! Last year the Chapter Challenge took place on the Loch and involved Viking Long Boat racing! Great entertainment and a true spectacle. It’s a fabulous rally and has really developed an individual theme and feel over the last few years. For me the year is starting early with two road captains training courses in March! The first at Oxford, Harley-Davidson Europe HQ and then it’s Dublin. These courses are a great opportunity for me to promote Wake the Lakes and Red Rose Chapter and have always been well received. This year we have two more of our Road Captains booked on the course in April at Carnforth. Also keep an eye out for Group Riding Training for all! We know people new to Harley’s want to learn what we do and how we do it so this might be the best way to do this. So don’t miss out when we role out the course. See you on the road soon!! Gordon FROM THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR Hi everybody; well the forecast of snow and ice that we were told to expect has not yet descended upon us so everybody with their fingers crossed please keep them crossed. What this means is that we have time to get on our Harleys and ride. As you are aware I was organising the trip to the European HOG rally in Croatia this year and had a list of people wanting to go. Well due to a new job and restrictions around May to July I am unable to make the trip. I have emailed all those who were interested and am still holding accommodation in Bio Grad, Croatia so if you are still wanting to make the trip please get in touch and I can reallocate hotels or apartments to you before I cancel them. Final note; take the mothballs of your bike if you have had it wrapped up for winter, the riding season is already upon us so let’s get out there and ride... David FROM THE MERCHANDISE OFFICERS The new HOG regalia is now available, including the large and small back patches. Chris and Dawn are looking into other items such as jackets, etc. They will have regalia for sale at social evenings—make sure you get yours! FROM THE EVENTS OFFICER We had our Social in January at the Poachers at Bamber Bridge. Gordon gave us the feedback from the Directors meeting which involved the new upcoming logos and some changes to Chapter membership. Also on the night we had the Chase the Ace Raffle which now stands at over £400, unfortunately Iris could only draw the 5 of Diamonds and the booby prize of £5. Our Winter Ball this year was at Lancaster House on 1st February, a great time was had—see the article in the Mag. It now feels that the season is just round the corner and with plenty of things already in the planning: Thunder Road Tours of Spain will be doing a Presentation at the February Social Lancaster Charity Barrel Run Bowling Challenge against the Hatters Crag Run in April Northwest Air Ambulance Visit Evening Ride-out to Ambleside Birthday Bash BBQ Remember any Ideas are always welcome Catch you all soon. Fyfey “Bumble Bee” getting ready for its 103” conversion at PH-D FROM THE LOH OFFICER As we start a new year LOH have already started planning with a night booked for a “Tolleys Night out in the kitchen” on the 10th March ( still a couple of places left ) plus the Charity walk this year will be the Midnight Charity Walk in Sept.( more information soon) At the January Coffee Morning it was the usual format of a clothes swap which always raises a few laughs also on the morning it was decided that this year the Charity we would support is Trinity Hospice . The next Coffee Morning will be held on the 1st March in the upstairs Diner. All the best Kim FROM THE SAFETY OFFICER Hi all! First of all let me apologise for last months introduction. It read like a CV and not a very good one at thatsorry! Thank you very much to those members and ex-friends who went to great lengths and employed various descriptives to point this out to me - none of which can be repeated in this quality publication! It was a communication misunderstanding on my behalf never to be repeated. (Oh, come on, Mick—it was fine! - Nitro) So, me and the wife, Julie, still recovering from this years winter ball - what a night! We had a great time, great company, great entertainment (Paula Delaney-good scouse girl), great food..... oh and great wine! I am pleased to report from a safety perspective that with all of the wine, beer and spirits that were consumed there were no incidents of note! Fyfey did us proud once again, well done mate and thanks from both of us. Lastly, you will see on the chapter calendar that some Saturday rides are listed as 'group riding' events. The chapter and HOG promotes safe riding at all times be it as an individual or as part of a group. To ride as an individual within a group can sometimes impede the safe progression of the group as a whole and unsettle following riders. We have all been on ride outs where the rider in front has unintentionally impeded us or left unnecessary large gaps in the formation causing various degrees of frustration. These short Saturday rides can introduce new members to the fraternity to some simple basic principles of group riding which will not only improve the overall safety of the rides for the individual, but also the group as a whole, which in turn makes the group riding experience more enjoyable for all. These rides are not just for new members, I would encourage anyone who feels they could benefit from attending to turn out - you will be more than welcome. That's it for now, ride safe people! Following the 30th Anniversary of the Harley Owners Group, HOG have introduced some changes. Most obvious is the new logo, with the eagle looking to the east, some say as representing opening markets for the Motor Company. But along with that, there are changes to the Chapter Charter—the rules that HOG lay down for chapters. If you’re new to HOG it may seem odd for what is essentially a motorcycle owners club to have corporate restraints, but fear not, they won’t get in the way of enjoying Harley ownership. To put HOG into a historical context, it is, to quote from the charter, a family-oriented non-political and non-religious organisation. When it was formed in the early 80’s, Harley ownership was associated by the public with back-patch clubs, gang behaviour and the threat of violence. Not that it was entirely true, of course, but Harley were keen to make Harley ownership more acceptable to the public, and few can dispute that it has. This and a general shift in public attitude to the type of motorcycling we, as a chapter, do has made a considerable difference to the experience over the last 30 years. Can you remember when most campsites and hotels had “No Bikers” signs outside? There is no doubting the success of HOG, with millions of members worldwide, huge events and thousands of active chapters. One of the reasons for its success is, in my opinion, the consistent support and involvement of the Motor Company. In comparison, Triumph Motorcycles ran, for a time, a similar organisation called RAT (Riders Association of Triumph), with “packs” associated with their dealerships. They ran popular events and had a lot of active members with a quality magazine issued by the factory. However, for whatever reason, Triumph dropped support of RAT, leaving it up to dealerships. RAT very quickly fell apart, and although there are pockets of groups who still meet, that was that. In contrast, HOG continues to grow. The new logo—now available in patch form from Chris and Dawn So what is the charter and what are the changes? The charter outlines the rules chapters have to follow. In Article 1, HOG outlines the purpose of the chapters: that is, the local chapter shall be to promote responsible Harley-Davidson motorcycling activities for Harley Owners Group members by conducting Chapter activities and encouraging participation in other HOG events. It goes on to say that Chapter activities and operations shall be conducted in a manner consistent with a familyoriented, non-political and non-religious philosophy (and here was me thinking Harley ownership WAS a religion!). Finally, it says that the Chapter exists to develop a closer relationship between the Harley-Davidson rider and the authorised HarleyDavidson Dealership. No surprise that Harley use HOG to promote their products, of course. Significant changes to the charter include an option for a dealership to sponsor more than one chapter. This may not be important in the UK, but in the USA where a dealership might have several outlets scattered over a large area, this could be useful way to cater for HOG members in that area. Dealerships of course have an important involvement in the chapter, and if everything goes wrong (maybe if they become too religious and political!), the dealer can pull the plug on the chapter. However, if it is terminated, the Dealer cannot start another chapter for 12 months. This is to dissuade chapters being shut down for trivial reasons. At Red Rose we are fortunate that we have a very good relationship with PH-D, so this needn’t worry us. A new requirement is that Chapters have a Chapter Manager. In our case, that means Greg has a new title! Roles of the various Chapter Officers have not changed. You have four primary officers (Director, Assistant Director, Treasurer and Secretary) and the discretionary (optional) officers to fulfil various roles, such as the Activities Officer, LOH Officer, Road Captain, etc. There has been a significant change in Chapter Membership requirements: associate members are not allowed; everyone has to be a full member of the chapter. As a chapter we are looking into what this means to our members—obviously the issue would be subscription costs, as associate members have been paying a reduced membership fee. We are considering offering “family” membership at reduced cost, but essentially everyone will be a full member. It is not clear what this change is all about, it’s probably something to do with corporate responsibility. Our Chapter logo: we can use it how we like. Just a mention of the minimum requirements for chapter events: chapters must run a minimum of four members-only riding events each year (but each member can bring a guest). There must be a minimum of four communications a year which must include information on member activities, indicating whether they are open, members-only or closed events. Red Rose publish six journals a year, a number which we believe better serves our membership in promoting events. Failure to meet minimum requirements can result in sponsorship being rescinded. Those are the main changes to the Charter, but there is also new guidance on Logos, mainly to do with the use of the new ones and retirement of the old ones. Don’t worry, you can still wear your HOG patch with the westward-facing eagle and the wheel logo; this will continue to be available but is now called the “Heritage” logo, it just won’t be used on official communications. Patches with the new logo are available and Chris and Dawn will be happy to sell you one at club socials. The HOG “Wordmark” - the form of lettering that we have been using on the cover of the newsletter—has changed to a cleaner design. Remember the flying skull logo shown in the last newsletter? That will NOT be available in the UK due to it’s similarity to designs used by backpatch clubs. In the UK these clubs are very sensitive about anyone wearing something that looks like it might be a backpatch club rocker or design, so don’t do it! It is worth repeating the advice that the use of bottom-rockers (a curved patch underneath the central design) MUST NOT be used. In any doubt, talk to a chapter officer. There are lots of other smart patches you can use without upsetting anybody. Chapters can have their own merchandise made (e.g. embroidered jackets, patchOne of the new logos es, etc,) but mustn’t muck about with the actual HOG logo’s without permission, as they are trademarks. We can continue to have our Red Rose patch of course, but if we incorporate the HOG logo as well, we’d need to get it approved by HOG UK. So, the changes to the charter shouldn’t make a lot of difference to the way Red Rose runs. It might seem somewhat restricting if you are new to HOG—wasn’t Harley ownership all about freedom?- but in the 23 years I’ve been a HOG member I’ve never felt that the few rules have ever diminished my enjoyment of the organisation, and in fact have led to an organisation you can count on to run good, safe, fun events for everyone. Nitro Here we are again, Winter Ball day, as always it is a busy one, Ian likes to get there early to check out the room and set up for the night. No exception today as we arrive at 2:30pm, luckily for me our room was available. As we wandered past the bar Chris and Dawn are already sat in there tucking into something nice. I would normally frequent the bar and join in but I had been feeling a bit under the weather all week and favoured a few hours relaxing in our room as my best course of action. Once checked into our room Ian leaves to go down to the function room to set up for the night armed with his new Winter Ball logo, Placemats with reminder menus on the reverse plus the Red Roses for each Table. He disappeared for an hour only to then return to the room as he had forgotten the Table Plan and Table Names. He seemed quite happy the Pc and Projector were set up and raring to go. Time now for me to get ready and put on my glad rags as we were meeting in the bar by 6:45 sharp, Ian has given me the job of ensuring that we get photo’s of everyone when they arrive in the bar so I am armed with camera in hand. After a quick a quick drink it is time to go through to the Dalton suite function room. The room is set up with seven round tables all aptly named after UK rallies, on entry the New Logo is displayed on the projector screen and is also used for the place mats. The delicious four course meal took about an hour and half, during which soft music was played with the projector showing a multitude of photos Ride-outs, Rallies and Socials. Once the meal were finished we got straight into the awards ceremony, which was presented by Gordon in his usual droll manner. Winners this year were:Best Article (News of the World award): Neil Ashton Best Photo (David Bailey award) : Kirsty Wolstenholme Best Flag (Church of Bones) : Nick & Louise plus Chris & Iris Best Supporting Member : Derek Foster Best Member : Ernie Phillipson Ian also picked up a small appreciation award for arranging the Social events throughout the year and the girls also presented me with a bottle bubbly for the LOH activities. Once the awards were finished Paula Delaney did two sets of music which really got the room rocking and got the girls doing a lot of bopping. The night went on until the early hours with some Rock and Disco music courtesy of Speaky’s Ipod. All in all I think everyone enjoyed it and those who could remember it applauded a good time was had by all. Kim My Harley Ownership Red Rose Chapter Member Dave “Deano” Dean tells us about how he got into the Harley-Davidson life. Hello everyone I’d just like to introduce myself and give a bit of background info to those of you I haven’t met yet. Most people in life called me Deano but I will answer to anything! I have been a member of HOG and a Charter Member of Red Rose Chapter since June 2007 and Bridgwater Chapter in 2009 My wife Linda came from Weston-super-Mare and moved up to the town of Accrington where we married in 1984, (November 10th as I recall—how could I ever forget that day!). Now with most of her family living in and around Weston we visited the town at least once a month. We decided that we would move back to Weston when we retired. As our visits always coincided with the Cider Rally we joined the Bridgwater chapter in 2009 with a view to taking an active part when we eventually moved down to Weston. It all started back in the sixties when I got an NSU 150 scooter, as my parents did not approve of motorcycles due to the recent death on motorcycles of two of the lads I had grown up with. Both the guys were only16, one of them only 5 days after passing his test. However after sort of slightly damaging the scooter and convincing them that a bike was more stable I bought a Tiger Cub. (Best little bike I ever had). That progressed to a1962 pre-unit Triumph T120 Bonneville which I had for three years. That was before work and the big wide world took over, after which I had not enough spare time to justify a bike as work took me all over the world with precious little time at home. There was however one eighteen month contract in Avonmouth. I was asked to cover for just two weeks while the site manager was ill. As it turned out they kept me there for the duration. It was there I met my wife Linda in1982. Fast forward to 2004, our daughter came to live with us again and decided to study social work at our local Runshaw College in Chorley, Lancashire. The problem was transport. A scooter seemed to be the perfect solution as the college hired them out to students. Unfortunately all the scooters had been let out before Tereza applied. Whilst returning home one Friday afternoon from a meeting in Peterborough I drove past Chorley Yamaha and spotted a good deal on a brand new Yamaha 100cc. model. Saturday morning collected wife and daughter down to Chorley Yamaha paid the deposit signed the paperwork job done. Wrong! Take out wallet, dig deep, helmet (no crap mind), boots, jacket, gloves, riding trousers to match jacket, phew! Off again security chain and CBT, two stroke oil etc., etc. let’s get out of here!!!!!!!!!!!! The daughter was by now living in her own place, close by us, and the scooter when not in use kept safe in our garage, life was back to normal. By the end of 2006 daughter had now gained a partner and a new baby boy much to the displeasure of the family cat who felt left out of things as did the Yamaha lying idle in the garage. It was just before Christmas 2006 when it was suggested that I took the scooter out for a spin to keep the parts mobile until she decided what to do with it. Oh well, if needs must! I bought a helmet from Chorley Yamaha with money I had been given for Christmas and on Christmas Day morning I put it on. Checking the neighbourhood to see if anyone was watching I slowly pushed the scooter down the drive, started the engine and made a not so speedy exit. Had an hour or so and enjoyed it. After a few trips out on the scooter the obvious need for more power was becoming apparent. After returning from holiday in April 2007 we went out for provisions, grabbed a bargain and booked another holiday at the travel agents in Morrison’s (Brownie points!). As we were driving home it just so happened that we had to pass the recently opened Preston Harley Davidson dealership. As I needed a leather jacket and the car had taken a fancy to a parking spot just outside PHD we decided to take a look inside. Here it comes again—the Chorley Yamaha Syndrome. In no time I had ordered a new Sportster with a few extras to boot. Ready for collection on18th May 2007 (see, I can remember dates). Came away Broke!!!!!!! without looking at a jacket. After riding the bike for a few months—Guess what!!!. I felt that I would like something bigger so once again back in the Lion’s Den and escaped with no Sportster, broken debit card, minor injuries and of course a new Softail Deluxe. Disaster struck when I had to have surgery to replace my right shoulder through arthritis. The bike was now too heavy to ride after the first operation. Then a second operation put things right. This was an ongoing saga. During which time the Deluxe had a facelift at 8 Ball’s custom paintworks and is featured on his home page. As I needed more surgery, one Saturday sat in Riders Bridgwater Café looking at the Sportster on the stair side podium my gorgeous wife (I’m not grovelling honest!) said that’s a nice little bike. “Yes” I said. “Very nice”. Driving back north to our then home in Chorley my gorgeous wife (still not grovelling) suggested that it may be beneficial to buy the Sportster as a run-around until I could comfortably manage the deluxe again. “Oh that sounds like a plan” I said. Next day after a swift phone call to Harvey at Riders same old story wallet broke!! Job done! Now after four operations I have both bikes and look forward to start riding the Deluxe again in spring 2014. I am currently riding the sportster. We moved down to Weston-super-Mare on the 22nd of December 2011 which was just after we had purchased and set up our Florida rental property and have now almost finished the complete renovation of the Weston property. Linda and I will do our best to get what you require in the way of HOG and chapter merchandise. Please feel free to ask us and if we don’t have it we will do what we can to order it. We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at the meetings. For anyone interested we let out our Florida property to Hog members at discounted rates. The house sleeps six people and is in Kissimmee 2 miles from Disney Theme Parks and ¾ mile from Orlando HD South where you can hire Harleys by the day, week or month on a UK Licence. Hire does include helmets, though not required by Florida Law. Deano Well 8th January was my first inaugural ride as a Road Captain, I eventually completed my IAM Advance Riding Course in Sept 2013 after starting it in May 2012, unfortunately the course got put on hold when Kim broke her leg plus the loss of my Mum, but the course was well worth doing. I did a two day Riders Edge course in 2007 but the IAM course was a lot better. The start of a ride is all about planning the recce ride to familiarise yourself with the route. I had planned the route to go through country lanes from Ribby Hall, Weeton Singleton and Poulton-Le-Fylde through to Bispham Front at the ship wreck, then along the front to the Euston Hotel, Fleetwood for a photo and a brew. Like all great planning it went totally pear shaped as Poulton -Le Fylde was shut the week before due to a sewer collapse, so I re- routed the ride through Thornton and on to Fleetwood. On the day it was lashing it down as I rode down to PHD I thought surely no-one would be out on a day like this but as I got closer to PHD the sky got brighter. On arrival at PHD to my surprise 11 bikes turned up, what a great turnout for a cold wintery day. During the ride-out briefing we also held a minute’s silence for Ian Broughton, a Red Rose member who had moved out to Aussie, but who had unfortunately died a few weeks ago. The Ride out went well and it took three hours round trip Thanks to everyone who made the effort to join me on the ride and catch you all soon. “Never mind taking a photo—get the kettle on!” Fyfey News from HOG UK on benefits to all HOG members. (NYSE:HOG) earnings and dealer new motorcycle sales continued their growth in the fourth quarter of 2013 and for the full year, compared to the year-ago periods. Worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew 5.7% in the quarter and 4.4% for the full year, compared to the year-ago periods. For the full year 2013, Harley-Davidson net income was $734.0 million on consolidated revenue of $5.90 billion, compared to full-year 2012 net income of $623.9 million on consolidated revenue of $5.58 billion. Full-year 2013 diluted earnings per share were $3.28, up 20.6% from EPS of $2.72 in 2012. “Without question 2013 was an outstanding year for Harley-Davidson. We unveiled game-changing motorcycles like Project Rushmore and Street, launched surge manufacturing, celebrated our 110th anniversary with customers around the globe and delivered continued financial growth,” said Keith Wandell, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. Harley-Davidson has been relentless at driving improvements throughout the organization that enable us to design, build and deliver motorcycles with unprecedented speed, efficiency, safety and quality. Together with our dealers, we continue to broaden our customer base and inspire riders to experience our brand. In 2013, retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles to outreach customers in the U.S. grew at more than twice the rate of sales growth to core customers, and we continued to expand the reach of our brand in international markets. “None of these results would be possible without the great efforts of our employees, dealers and suppliers, working as one team and moving in one direction to fulfil customers’ dreams,” said Wandell. “Moving forward, we believe we are well positioned to leverage our momentum, expand our reach among new and existing customers, and further strengthen Harley-Davidson’s position as one of the world’s leading brands.” Pope Sells his Harley In a bidding war that took six minutes, Pope Francis’ 1,585cc Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide sold for €241,500 (£200,200). A Harley-Davidson motorcycle jacket also sold for an astounding €57,500 (£47,700) at the sale which took place as part of Bonhams’ Les Grandes Marques du Monde sale at the Grand Palais in Paris. Watched by a crowd of hundreds, the Harley-Davidson and the leather jacket were the first two lots of the 45-strong motorcycle sale to go under the hammer. Those watching erupted into applause when the hammer came down on the motorcycle after being won by a telephone bidder. The items, which were donated to Pope Francis by Harley-Davidson as part of the 110thAnniversary Celebrations in June 2013, were bought by separate bidders – with the motorcycle going to a private buyer in Europe, and the jacket to an overseas buyer. Funds raised by the machine and the jacket will go towards the renovation of the Caritas Roma’s Don Luigi di Liegro hostel and soup kitchen based at Rome’s Termini railway station. The hostel opened 30 years ago to help the homeless, jobless and the poor, and the money raised by the Harley Davidson’s sale will allow it to continue to provide food and accommodation to more than 1,000 people in need every day. Signed on the tank by his Holiness at a special ceremony at the Vatican in November, the machine was also sold with a certificate of conformity from Harley-Davidson. The jacket was also signed by Pope Francis Terminator 2 Fatboy goes to H-D Museum The Harley-Davidson Museum™ in Milwaukee has acquired one of the few surviving 1990 Harley-Davidson® Fat Boy® motorcycles used in the filming of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. At the time of filming, the Fat Boy was one of Harley-Davidson’s newest models, and the one now in the Museum’s permanent collection was ridden by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1991 action classic. “Terminator 2 is an iconic film and a celebrated piece of pop culture history,” said Jim Fricke, Curatorial Director of the Harley-Davidson Museum. “This motorcycle arguably played one of the most significant film roles in Harley-Davidson’s history, and we’re thrilled it has found its permanent home here at the Museum, where it will be preserved for future generations.” The bike, which still shows significant production wear from filming, joins a collection of more than 450 motorcycles and thousands of other artefacts housed at the Museum in the Harley-Davidson Archives. More information on when the bike will be on public display will be released in the coming months.
