Great Northern Highway –
Muchea to Wubin Upgrade Stage 2
PLANNING REVIEW COMPLETE: CONSTRUCTION TO START IN 2016
Main Roads, in conjunction with industry partners Jacobs and Arup, has completed
a planning review for the Great Northern Highway – Muchea to Wubin. Detailed
designs for construction packages are now being prepared and will be delivered
over the next four years.
This planning review was the first
phase of the project, which has
received funding of $307.8 million
from the Australian Government
and $76.95 million from the State
Government. An additional $23.88
million was also committed by
the Australian Government for the
construction of a New Norcia bypass,
as part of the National Highway Upgrade
Program. This is supplemented with
an additional $5.93 million from the
State Government.
The planning review was informed by
extensive community and stakeholder
feedback from a series of public
information sessions, as well as
close consultation with heavy vehicle
operators, industry bodies and local
government.
This comprehensive consultation
process has helped the project team
develop a revised upgrade strategy for
the highway that identifies and prioritises
a range of construction packages to be
delivered between 2016 and 2019.

These construction packages will
feature a range of improvements such
as town bypasses, road widening, more
passing lanes, flattened crests, reduced
curves, safer roadsides and improved
rest area facilities with greater capacity.

Construction

(8 km from Old
Gingin Road to
Sugargum Drive)
• A new highway built next to the existing highway to provide a link to the
proposed NorthLink WA project (designed to allow for future lane duplication).
• New local access roads to provide safer access points to the highway.
• Existing highway to become a local access road.
Late 2016
Bindoon Bypass
• New 7 km bypass to the east of the town of Bindoon.
• Single carriageway (designed to allow for future duplication) with access roads
to serve adjacent properties.
• New northern and southern entrance to the town.
• Passing lanes in each direction.
• Northern tie-in to the existing highway at St Anne’s Catholic Church and
southern tie-in to the existing highway at the Brockman River Bridge.

Bindoon Hills
• A detailed planning study is currently underway to determine how best to upgrade
9 km of the Great Northern Highway over Bindoon Hill, just north of Bindoon.
• The study is considering several alignment options to efficiently and safely
traverse the Bindoon Hill, as well as the Perth-Darwin National Highway
alignment which was endorsed in 2002 and subsequently dismissed. This route
is located to the west of Great Northern Highway and east of Brand Highway.
• Once a route has been selected, additional funding will be sought for
construction.

New Norcia
Bypass
• New 6 km deviation to the east of the town to enable heavy vehicles to bypass
New Norcia.
• New 88 m bridge over Moore River.
• Scenic lookout on the northbound lane to allow road users to park and view the
historic town.
• Entry statement at southern connection to the town.

Batty Bog section
• 21 km section of new highway from Batty Bog to Walebing.

• Realignment of the existing highway to improve the tight curve at Walebing.
• Upgraded roadside parking facilities at Walebing.
• Realigned intersections with The Midlands Road and Old Geraldton Road.

Bindi Bindi
Curves
• 11 km of new highway through the Bindi Bindi bends.

Miling Bypass
• Upgrade of the highway from Lyons East Road to Miling North Road, including
a new eastern bypass of the town of Miling.
• New northern and southern accesses into town.
• Realigned Miling East Road to provide a staggered T-intersection for safe
crossing of the bypass.

Miling Straight
• New highway built next to the existing highway, from Miling North Road to
Gatti Road.
• Additional roadside stopping places.
• New overtaking lanes.
• Realignment of Miling North Road to provide a staggered T-intersection for safe
crossing of the highway.
Mid 2016
Pithara section
• Upgraded highway from Gatti Road to north of Pithara.
• New highway built next to the existing highway south of the Northam–Pithara
Road and a widening and upgrade for the remainder of this section.
• New overtaking lanes.
Late 2016
Dalwallinu Bypass
• Improved alignment of the curve at the northern end of the Dalwallinu Bypass to
improve safety.
• Improvements to the Kalannie Road Intersection.
