PFMA Connection page 3 Understanding Automated Material Handling Solutions Christine Emmerich Wisconsin Lift Truck Corporation [email protected] www.wisconsinlift.com Not long ago, I had the opportunity to visit the winter estate of Henry Ford and found myself driven (no pun intended) by Ford’s first moving assembly line and how it relates to today’s automated material handling solutions. The Early Years The assembly line can be considered one of the first forms of automation in the manufacturing industry. The impact of Ford’s assembly line was revolutionary. It was predominant in cutting production time from one car every 12 hours to one car every 93 minutes. With this change in operations, Ford achieved his goals to increase production and profits, and while doing so remained good to his employees by placing them in safer positions, better suited for their skill set. I recognize similar goals in communications I have with customers today. Present Time Since the assembly line, The Ford Motor Company, and other automotive manufacturers have familiarized themselves with the risks and benefits of other automated material handling solutions. Today, more industries, such as pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and packaging have begun to capitalize on these solutions as well. Why the Rise of Automation? Automated Material Handling Solutions are not new, but they are slowly becoming more popular and more utilized due to increased awareness and understand- ing of them, affordability, and the growing need to adapt to our ever changing society. For example: The Changing Workforce -- The skills required to operate new equipment in today’s workplace are scarce. Not only that, but the baby boomers are aging right out of the workforce. (According to AARP.com, 8,000 baby boomers turn 65 each day). Businesses are being left with numerous job openings and the challenge to attract and retain young, interested candidates. The Change in Buying Habits – The days of buying through brick-and-mortar are on a rapid decline as the surge of electronic commerce (e-commerce) excels. With e-commerce, consumers can make immediate purchases online via computer, mobile device or other technology, without leaving the comfort of their own home. The Competition – Some companies are determined to fulfill the consumer demand for immediate delivery – like same or next day. Amazon’s drones that have been in the news are a fine example. If this transpires, they will have a competitive advantage with their rare service offering. There is also a trend, referred to as mass customization, of which some companies are increasing their number and variety of SKUs in order to have just the right product the customer wants, at any time they want it. What’s the Solution? There is not just one solution, which is a good thing, because rarely is one application like another. In addition to that, automation is not always the sole solution. In some cases it encompasses the whole project, while with others, it may be a small piece to improve one area of a facility. These days, automated technology may work in tandem with traditional material handling equipment (like forklifts); however, that combination may phase out down the road. The most common solution I work with today is Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) or Carts (AGC). These are driverless vehicles used to carry anything from small parts to large loads, from point A to point B, on a repetitive basis. There are a number of different AGVs that vary from dimensions, load handling capabilities, and types of navigation. Three navigation techniques are magnetic floor tape, vision-guided technology, and laser guidance. AGVs can be used in multiple applications, such as assembly, towing, parts delivery, and pallet handling. Some other automated solutions include storage/retrieval systems, vertical lift modules, horizontal carousels, pick-to-light order picking, automated trailer loading, mini-load, and more. In order to provide the best solution, it requires a thorough understanding of a customer’s material handling needs. To Automate or Not to Automate? If you answer yes, in this select group of questions, it is suggested your company consider automated material handling solutions: • Are you a manufacturer, warehouse, or distribution center? • Do you repetitively move product? • Do you adhere to continuous improvements, lean or six sigma initiatives? • Do you operate more than one shift? • Are you facing labor challenges and rising operational costs? • Are you near or exceeding full facility capacity? • Are you striving for quicker response time to locate, store and retrieve items? Submitted by: Debra Everly, PhD Vice President, MidWest Certified Training, Inc. and Milwaukee Lead/ Asbestos Information Center Great headline, but not when seats are filled with Wisconsin lead poisoned children. The Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin reports more than 450,000 Wisconsin children under the age of 6 were reported lead poisoned since 1996, enough to fill Miller Park 10 times. Work completed by lead safe renovators is a key factor to reduce the risks in remodeling, repair, and demolition projects. In early 2014, the Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin celebrated 20 years of work making a difference for kids. Eliminating childhood lead poisoning is one of the key components of the Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin. Through partnerships, their efforts to raise awareness, test and treat children, and advocate for the removal or control of lead hazards in homes have bettered the lives of thousands of Wisconsin children and families. The presence of lead in Wisconsin and the concern about the impact of lead includes information gathered by Wisconsin professionals, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Wisconsin consistently ranks in the top ten states in the nation for the number of children found to be lead poisoned. According to 2012 statistics, only 38% of high-risk children in Wisconsin receive their recommended blood lead tests. The majority of highrisk children go untested. Many more children are likely to be lead poisoned but remain unidentified. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 1/3 of homes in Midwest states, such as Wisconsin, have lead paint hazards. Lead exposure has been associated with cognitive deficits and behavior problems. Wisconsin Department of Health Services recommends targeted blood lead testing of children, based on demonstrated risk factors such as age of housing, recent renovation activities, family income, and siblings reported with lead poisoning. Children protected from lead exposure are less likely to need special education or to be arrested for criminal activity, a significant savings to us all. High levels of lead in a child’s blood can cause coma, convulsions and death, and even low levels can cause decreased intelligence and impaired hearing, according the the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cut its threshold level for defining lead poisoning in children to 5 micrograms per deciliter in 2012, from 10, marking the first such reduction in 20 years. “The recommendation was based on a growing number of scientific studies showing that even low blood lead levels can cause lifelong health effects,” the CDC said, in adopting the recommendation of an advisory committee. The leading sources of lead exposure to U.S. children are lead-based paint, which was banned for use in housing in 1978, and lead-contaminated dust. It is important to know the facts, to combat myths about lead poisoning, including: Myth #1 - Companies quit manufacturing paint with lead in it in 1978, so it is no longer a problem. Fact - Leadbased paint was banned in 1978, however, many homes contain lead-based paint that has not been removed and can become a hazard as it deteriorates. Myth #2 - Only children can get lead poisoned. Fact - Lead is a poison and while the population that is greatest at risk is children under the age of 6, adults who work with lead through a job or hobby can become lead poisoned as well. Myth #3 - My child doesn’t eat paint chips, so they are not at risk for lead poisoning. Fact - Lead dust created by deteriorating lead based paint or lead paint on a friction surfaces, such as windows, floors, and woodwork can poison a child. The child can inhale the dust but the most often route is via ingestion. Children have more “hand-tomouth” activity and lead dust they get on their hands from the floor, windows, toys, etc., which inevitably ends up in their mouth. Myth #4 - I’m an experienced contractor, I don’t need any special training or certification to work on a home that had lead-based paint. Fact - Any person disturbing more than one square foot of painted surface in target housing or child occupied facility, for compensation, needs to be certified at a minimum as a Lead-Safe Renovator. Myth #5 - Lead poisoning is only an issue for “poor” people. Fact - As with any health hazard, lead poisoning does not discriminate. It is a health hazard for anyone living or working in a property with lead-based paint. Lead Safe renovators have the knowledge and skills to complete work according the federal and state guidelines.
