Fact Sheet & Destination Overview Los Cabos, Mexico LOCATION Los Cabos is on the southernmost tip of the 1,000-‐mile long Baja Peninsula, west of mainland Mexico and just below Southern California. The Sea of Cortes borders Los Cabos on the east and the Pacific Ocean is to the west. Los Cabos is approximately 1,000 miles south of San Diego. GEOGRAPHY The region’s geography is a dynamic mix of unspoiled desert landscape, white sand beaches and dramatic rock outcroppings. “El Arco,” a distinctive rock arch that sits at the tip of Land’s End, is Los Cabos’ most famous geographic landmark. “El Arco” dips into the sea at exactly the spot where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortes, and was formed by the pounding waters on both sides. ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE With non-‐stop flights or convenient connections available from Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Missouri; Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York/Newark, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, California, Seattle and coming soon, Orange County, Los Cabos is both accessible and exciting. In 2012, Los Cabos will implement Global Entry kiosks for international travelers arriving at the San Jose del Cabo International Airport (SJD). As the first airport in Mexico selected for this program, the reputation of Los Cabos as a safe and secure tourism destination is further affirmed. Global Entry kiosks are stationed within the airport to allow pre-‐approved, low-‐risk travelers to avoid standing in line and proceed directly to the kiosk for expedited clearance upon arrival to Los Cabos. Although this program is intended for frequent travelers, there is no minimum number of trips necessary to qualify, making Global Entry a welcome and convenient addition to the San Jose del Cabo International Airport, benefiting everyone from business to leisure travelers. REQUIREMENTS All travelers between Mexico and the United States must present a valid passport. In addition, visitors must carry a Mexican Tourist Permit, which is issued free of charge upon arrival after proof of citizenship is shown, or may be provided in advance by an airline or travel agent. This permit must be given to an immigration official upon departure. LODGING Los Cabos hotel association is comprised for more than 51 hotels and over 10,000 rooms ranging from boutique to “gran turismo,” stretching from East Cape to San Jose del Cabo, across the luxury corridor, through Cabo San Lucas and up the Pacific beaches. CURRENCY The Mexican peso is the official currency. The exchange rate fluctuates, but banks are usually the best place to change money. American dollars are commonly accepted as well. LANGUAGE Although Spanish is the official language of the Los Cabos region, English is widely spoken. TIME Mountain Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of Pacific Standard Time, one hour behind Central Standard Time and two hours behind Eastern Standard Time. GETTING AROUND Taxis are abundant and available at the airport, major hotels and taxi stands. Public transportation is also available. Rental cars are available; a valid US driver’s license will be accepted. BEACHES From San Jose del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas there are 20 different main beaches to explore. The most famous are Playa Costa Azul, a haven for surfers; Playa Palmilla, a favorite spot for shutterbugs; Santa Maria Bay, with its protected cover and marine sanctuary; Playa Chileno, known for its fine swimming and snorkeling; Playa El Médano, the center of Cabo San Lucas water sports and Playa del Amor, accessible only by watercraft and near the famous “El Arco,” where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean. Many are secluded, others popular, and some have restaurants and changing rooms while some do not. Currents are strong and visitors are encouraged to read posted signs and seek advice before swimming. ACTIVITIES Shopping San Jose del Cabo offers a wide array of unique boutiques and galleries with high quality arts, crafts, jewelry, clothing and more. Cabo San Lucas boasts an array of clothing and artisan shops, open-‐air bazaars, souvenir stalls, and markets, as well as the upscale, boutique shopping mall, Luxury Avenue Los Cabos. Eco-‐Adventure Whale watching, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, rock climbing, fossil hunts, camel safaris and swimming with whale sharks. Water Sports SCUBA diving, snorkeling, parasailing, surfing, windsurfing, sea kayaking, water skiing, sailing, and paddle-‐boarding. Equestrian Beach horseback riding, equestrian centers, and desert excursions. Fishing Los Cabos is one of the world’s best sport fishing destinations -‐-‐ more marlin and swordfish are caught here than anywhere else in the world. Catch and release is the general rule. World famous sport fishing tournaments are held annually. Golf Los Cabos is quickly becoming a mecca for championship golf with courses designed by the "who's who" of golf course design, including Robert Trent Jones II, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. Some resort spas draw upon a global palette of soothing therapies, while others emphasize an authentic Mexican experience through signature treatments that incorporate indigenous ingredients found on the Baja Peninsula such as aloe, clay, herbs, and desert flowers for their healing properties. DINING & NIGHTLIFE Los Cabos is earning a reputation for its master chefs and highly awarded cuisine worldwide. There are dozens of fine restaurants in Los Cabos, covering a range of cuisines and styles. There are elegant white-‐tablecloth restaurants, as well as street side bistros; “hacienda” restaurants with dancing and live local music; casual beachside eateries and funky little snack shacks. The flavors of Italy, France, Japan and the Americas are represented, and several popular spots feature the regional Mexican cuisine that is a “must-‐taste” for any visitor. Local seafood is highly regarded and appears on menus from restaurants of every description. Nightlife can be as quiet as the waves and the stars…. or it can be lively ‘til the wee hours at Cabo’s famous nightclubs.
