6 A Tribute to The University of Wyoming
The University of Wyoming is surrounded by the oak and aspen trees of Laramie.
Students, alumni, and faculty all lay their footsteps across Prexy’s Pasture, usually
looking down because of the snow blowing sideways. But something special happens
when you make your way along the crisscrossing sidewalks of campus. You become
part of an epidemic. There is no cure, there is no treatment, but surprisingly,
hundreds sign up each year to join in this outbreak. The University
of Wyoming is where I made my home as a student at the college
of business. I too became infected with Poke Pride. Poke Pride is a
feeling that overcomes your body, usually on Saturdays in the fall.
It causes your closet to have a special section of brown and gold
clothing reserved just for football and basketball games. Those
who are completely overwhelmed by Poke Pride may even have a
gold wig, brown and gold striped overalls, and in my case, brown
and gold chaps. I attended the University of Wyoming and I was
proud when the stands at War Memorial Stadium filled up with the
bright gold color and specks of brown. I always thought about
what color I would choose for my Miss Rodeo Wyoming chaps,
and when it actually came time to call up Tim Bath of Bath Chaps and tell him what
colors I wanted, it was an obvious choice; Brown and Gold! I am proud to be an
alumus of the University of Wyoming. I still wear my brown and gold on game days,
I listen to the play-by-play on the radio, and I have attended homecoming every year.
To be a UW Cowboy Fan means to stand by your team during their ups and downs,
and more than that, it means you belong to a group who has the confidence and
strength to live in Wyoming! As past UW Football coach Joe Glenn would cry out
before each game, "Powder River, Let'er Buck!"

7 On the Road with Miss Rodeo Wyoming
Once I returned home from the Miss Rodeo Wyoming Pageant, I just kept my bags packed since I headed back to my second home of Wyoming, Cody. I was on hand during the Cody Nite Rodeo Finals. At the end of August, the top athletes in each event compete for the Average tle and secure the year end championship. A er each event I interviewed the Average Champion in the arena presen ng them with their trophy belt buckle. The pride and sense of accomplishment was shared by everyone in that arena. Congratula ons to all of the contestants this year, and we will see you next year, June 1st for the 2012 Cody Nite Rodeo season. students from that German high school visit our high school for a month. My family has been a host family for over 10 years. This year, the German students were visi ng Laramie. I had actually met one of the exchange students in Evanston at the rodeo! I was asked to come in and teach the kids about rodeo, so I gathered up three of my rodeo friends, Trey Wasserburger (bareback rider), Travis Darling (saddle bronc rider), and Cody Tarr (bull rider), and we explained rodeo. They brought in their gear and I showed them photos of each event. The kids could not understand why these guys would want to compete in rodeo a er all the injuries they had. They enjoyed it though, and I now think rodeo has 20 more fans! While the rodeo community was heading to Omaha, Nebraska for the Jus n Boots Championship, I headed back to Cody, Wyoming and my home at the Antler Inn. They have graciously donated a hotel room to me each me I have come to Cody since the Fourth of July. This trip to Cody wasn't for a rodeo, but for the Cody High Style Fashion show. I was honored to wear the designs of Rockmount, Kippy, and Tasha Polozzi. It was pre y scary stepping out onto that stage for the first I then trucked my way back across the state to Evanston, Wyoming show! Ask me to hold a microphone and talk to these people, no for the Cowboy Days Labor Day Weekend rodeo. The first morning, I problem, but they wanted me to walk in front of them! I almost met up with the royalty members, bullfighter Marc Gill, barrelman thought I couldn't do it! But I got the courage up and walked that Randee Munns, announcer Mike Brems, and members of the rodeo runway like crazy! The next day I was able to walk in the downtown commi ee. We made our way to various elementary schools fashion show. I was asked to wear an original 1948 rodeo queen explaining the sport of rodeo to the kids, and giving them each a free ou it from one of the museums downtown, The Red Pony Museum. cket to the rodeo. All morning, Marc Gill reminded me that Miss Con nued on next page... Rodeo Wyoming is the first one to get dunked at the live fish catch later that weekend. And he con nued to remind me all weekend! Finally came the me for the live fish catch. With our aras and matching shirts, the royalty members and I plo ed against Marc. We were all on our toes that morning! Two girls let their guards down, but then, a er one failed a empt to get Marc soaked, we all grabbed the bags the kids were using to catch their fish, we filled them up with water, as if helping the kids catch the fish, then ran over and dumped all of our bags onto him. SUCCESS!! Marc was drenched from head to toe, and believe it or not, I was s ll dry! It wasn't un l I let my guard down on the LAST child in the pool, helping her catch a fish, that Marc got me. He very nicely placed me face first in the pool. Even though I ended up in fishy water, I feel I won since instead of being the first one wet, I was the last one! The rodeo that weekend was great! Everyone was so nice and I really bonded with the royalty there. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard at making this such a treasured community event. When I was in high school, I par cipated in GAPP, German American Partnership Program. It is an exchange program where a group of about 20 American students from Laramie visits a school in southern Germany for a month, and then the following year a group of 20 8 It was pre y fun walking down the runway in a metallic orange ou it and wooly orange chinks. I then made a super fast ou it changed and walked the runway for the Col. Cody's Wild West Gi Emporium. I had so much fun! Thank you Kim Richard for including me in on this event. It is one I will ALWAYS remember! On November 6th, 2011 at the University of Wyoming Hansen Arena, in the mee ng/dining room, I will be having my Send Off Party. Things will begin at 2pm and include showing of my ou its for the Miss Rodeo America pageant, presenta on of my speech, and numerous impromptu ques ons. I will also be having a small auc on featuring Wyoming Made products. There will be a $5 dona on at the door, appe zers, desserts, and a cash bar. I am accep ng RSVPs to the following email address, [email protected]. I am now busy ge ng things ready for the Miss Rodeo America pageant held in Las Vegas December 3‐10, 2011. I am studying, riding, working out, curling my hair, and remembering how much I have loved my journey this year. It was been worth every late night and early morning! Brittany Richards Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2011 9 A note from Miss Rodeo Wyoming 1990, Sandra Levering
When I was crowned Miss Rodeo Wyoming 1990, I received a beau ‐
ful saddle made by Don Butler of Sheridan, Wyoming. Although the seat was small for me (13.5 inches), the workmanship was incredible and I used it with pride and re red it to an honored place in my house a er that year. About 10 years ago I was moving around and had placed most of my an que furniture and the saddle in a storage unit. Everything was stolen, including the saddle. I put up posters, called and visited any place I could think of where someone might try to sell my treasures. There were no leads and no luck. I also called Don Butler to let him know in case someone ran across it and called him. Fast forward this past spring while helping some neighbors move ca le, I received a call from my mom saying my MRW saddle was for sale on the internet. Don Butler had received a call from one of his customers that was considering buying it and wanted to know it's worth. Don called the Pla e County Sheriff's office to alert them and see if they could get in touch with me. To make a long story short, the saddle was retrieved, the young lady selling it had an aunt that bought it at a tack auc on in California 9 years ago and had no idea it was sto‐
len and I now have the saddle back in my living room. It's been used, but well taken care of. I wanted to share the story of an old friend coming home and I wanted to see about replacing some of the hardware that was missing from the saddle. I know there was a cantle plate, but can't remember what it said. Don Butler and I figured it was something the Associa on had ordered and I didn't know how far back the records would go. I'm guessing it was ordered from Montana Silversmith back in 1989 by the Associa on. Don didn't donate the saddle so it may have included the donor of the saddle, which I think was the Associa on. Any infor‐
ma on would be helpful! I love to tell this story and I’d like to share my apprecia on for Don Butler , the Pla e County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Twiford and Fresno County Sheriff’s office for helping to bring home an irreplaceable treasure! Sandra U er Levering Star of the West Hat Company
Star of the West Hat Company became a silver sponsor in February. They do‐
nated a brown hat to Bri any and also gave her the use of “pinky” throughout the year. Kim will receive a 20X hat and will be able to spend me with them when she a ends the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo in Rapid City, SD. Although they are located in South Da‐
kota, you can follow them on facebook and be sure to pay them a visit next me you’re in Rapid City! 10 Sharing the Love
