2004 Fall Newsletter
NEWSLETTER
September - November 2004
From the Executive Director…
Dear Friends,
The East End Arts Council begins its fiscal year in
September. Our 2003-2004 year was filled with both challenges and opportunities. The Board of Directors, the staff
and myself look proudly at our continued growth in membership and student enrollment. Our work with numerous
East End organizations is a rewarding accomplishment and
a clear direction, which we continue to pursue. As always
we remain honored to have a volunteer corps that graciously supports our efforts, and grateful for continued support from our Leadership Circle.
The East End Arts Council has received approval
from Empire State Development for zone capital credits
for the Carriage House Restoration Project. This is big
news! What it means is that donors of a minimum of
$2,000 towards the Carriage House restoration will be
entitled to declare 25% of their donation as a NYS tax
credit. These contributions may also be eligible for a
Federal and State charitable deduction. The Carriage
House restoration is being undertaken with support
from the Town of Riverhead through the Community
Development Block Grant Fund. We look forward to
the renovation as another big step in the revitalization of
downtown Riverhead.
The East End Arts Council has also received the news
that we are the coordinators of the Nassau-Suffolk Arts
in Education Roundtable. This is a forum for artists,
teachers, administrators and cultural organizations to
meet and further the strength and visibility of arts based
learning.
Another year… lots more good work to do. I hope
you will be a part of it. We look forward to seeing you..

8th Annual
Community Mosaic
and Streetpainting
Festival the Best Yet
Most festival goers agree that the 8th
Annual Community Mosaic and Street
Painting Festival held on Sunday, May
30th was the best one yet. The collaboration with the Long Island Farm Bureau
on the theme of Savor Long Island resulted in a record 45 exhibiting artists whose
offerings ranged from
fine art to edible
flowers. Along the
Peconic Riverfront,
over 60 streetpainters
worked their magic
accompanied
throughout the day
by musicians performing on the
Riverhead
Showstage. Student
art from the
Community School of
the Arts, Aquebogue
Elementary, Wading
River Elementary, the Riley Avenue School and the Make-a-Wish
Foundation was exhibited in the EEAC Barn. At the same time, the
Savor Long Island fine art exhibit was open in the EEAC Gallery and
the Riverhead Incubator for the Arts (RIFTA) exhibit could be viewed
in the storefronts along East Main Street. Children had the opportunity to create art, view a glassblowing demonstration by mixed media
artist Clayton Orehek, see giant turtles and reptiles on loan from the
Fauna Society and visit exhibits from the Long Island ScienCenter. In
her weekly column, the editor of the News Review, Denise Civiletti,
was inspired to single out the festival as a model for downtown revitalization efforts. For those who were not able to join us, the festivities were broadcast live on WRIV 1390 AM Radio. Thanks to
Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Knapp-Swezey Foundation, the Town
of Riverhead, the Riverhead Free Library, the sponsors of our street
squares and our wonderful staff and volunteers without whom the festival would not be possible. Next year’s 9th annual festival will take
place on Sunday, May 29. We hope to see you there.
All work, with the exception of works on canvas must be framed
properly and ready to hang, and not previously exhibited at the
EEAC. Professional presentation which means clean mats,
frames, glass and plexi improve the look of the artwork and will
be considered in the judging process. Oils and acrylics on canvas
do not have to be framed but must be wired for hanging and
have all edges finished with the sides painted neatly, no tape or
staples showing. Label all work with name, address, phone,
title, size, price and medium. We encourage you to put work in
for sale. Artists get 70% commission on all sales. There is a
$5.00 entry fee for each piece for EEAC members and $10.00
entry fee per piece for non-members. Artists can become members at time of submission. Work must be dropped off in person
at the EEAC Gallery at 133 E. Main St, Riverhead.
All shows are juried unless otherwise noted.

School News
The Community
School of the Arts
summer semester ran from July 5 through
August 20, and many activities fit
between those dates. Private music lessons were offered, and many students
took advantage of the opportunity to keep
up with their instruments, try a new one,
or get a head start before band and
orchestra picks up in school. The fall
semester starts Thursday September 9,
and the music teacher’s schedules are filling up. If you are interested in private
music lessons please call the school at
369-2171 to set up a time and teacher.
A varied selection of art classes was
offered throughout the summer. The
EEAC was happy to offer classes at two
satellite locations; The Siena Center in
Watermill, and the Icehouse Gallery in
Greenport. Pepsi Freund’s watercolor at
Siena class was a great success. Both
instructor and students appreciated the
beautiful, tranquil surroundings the center
offers. Alan Bull enjoyed being able to
teach a teen drawing class at the Icehouse
in Greenport. The industrial gallery space
adapted into a classroom clear of distractions well suited for drawing and expanding artistic horizons.
Kids’ ages 5-12 years enjoyed some fun-filled
weeks at the Renaissance Junior and Renaissance
Kid Camps. The younger campers explored the
Old West through music and art. They tried the
recorder and xylophone, learned about rhythms
and solfeggio, and sang cowboy songs. They
made their own plaster maracas, and used them
in a show for friends and family, made pinch pots
and coil pots, wove bags and painted folk art self-portraits. Theater campers
wrote their own Wild West Cinderella, and performed the play for everyone.
At the Renaissance Kid Camp, held at the Suffolk County Community
Riverhead Campus, campers explored the many different sides of the arts.
They chose between Musical and Dramatic Theater, or 2-D and 3-D art.
Every week they were also able to choose different workshops; everything from etching to jazz cabaret. The camp theme was “through the arts
we tell our stories” and it certainly came through in the Camp Art Show
and Revue. Everything learned and created was shown off, and everyone
present was impressed with the talent of these truly wonderful, creative
kids. And no one can bring out that creativity like our spectacular camp
counselors. They worked, and played, hard each and every day, and truly
made the camp what it is. A special thank you to our wonderful volunteer
counselors-in-training; Hillary Brown, Allison Bunch, Catherine Clifford,
Grace Johnson, Justin Kwasna and Brittany Woodhull; What a helpful
group, full of energy and fun, just what the campers needed. If you haven’t
done so already, check out the Community School’s flyer for fall. There are
adult watercolor, acrylic and drawing classes, both during the day and at night.
Children’s classes include special drawing classes at the new Dinosaur
Museum and Fauna, an exhibit featuring reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates
from around the world. Also offered are a youth and adult chorus, classes for
home-schoolers and a new Community Orchestra. The Community Orchestra
is open to musicians of all ages and abilities and lead by East End composer
George Cork Maul. For more information call the school at 369-2171.

Lulu
Comes
Home!
A strange thing happened to Pat Snyder on
the way home from the office one fine summer day in June. After a long day’s work,
she answered her phone to find the
Riverhead police on the line. “Is this Pat
Snyder, the Director of the East End Arts
Council?” Hesitantly, she admitted her identity. “We received an anonymous call about
a body in Grangebel Park that was traced
back to you. Can you meet us down there?”
Pat rushed down to the park to find Lulu,
looking a little dazed, sitting on a park bench.
Upon positive ID, the nice policeman
released Lulu to her custody. Grandpa and
Daisy are
ecstatic to
have Lulu
back. They
can be seen
sitting contentedly
together on
the front
porch of the
Community
School of the
Arts enjoying
the activities of the Renaissance Kids’ Junior
Summer Camp. Lulu’s being closed-mouthed
about her adventures, but did confirm that
they were almost as exciting as the adventures that the kids at the Roanoke School
had imagined in their fascinating book
“Where in the World is Lulu?” on view at the
EEAC Gallery.
