t h e m a g a z i n e o f s a i n t b e n e d i c t at a u b u r n d a l e h i g h s c h o o l Fa l l 2 0 1 0 We've Got Spirit, Yes We Do! From the President To all our SBA families and friends – Season’s greetings from everyone here at SBA! I began my 35-year career in education right out of college. This career was then and still is the only thing I’ve wanted to do – most days. One of the perks is that I’ve never known anything but getting to enjoy a rather lengthy holiday break away from the job. Whenever possible, we try to shut the place down for an extended time and send everyone off to enjoy their families. Feel free to hate me for it; I’ve come to terms with that. Historically speaking, I’m sure there were any number of practical reasons – long since forgotten – that made such a two-week holiday break seem perfectly logical for whoever had to make such a decision at the time. But I have my own ideas of why they did it. I was recently reading research that said the part of the human brain that “analyzes information, makes decisions and anticipates consequences is the prefrontal cortex. And it does not become fully developed until one’s mid-20s.” In a nutshell then, we have a building full of one-thousand undeveloped pre-frontal cortexes running around. In other words, the holidays seem to provide an opportune time for them to be away from us and us to be away from them. At least for a little while. We haven’t yet mastered it, and likely never will, but we’re trying to help all we can with speeding up the whole pre-frontal cortex thing. St. Benedict tries to assist students as they come to terms with the concept of actions having consequences. True, that usually happens in the context of stupid stuff resulting in some sort of punishment. But we also try to emphasize the flip side. There is the truth that good deeds can also make monster differences. The pint of blood they might give actually does save lives. Cans of food really do provide meals – and sometimes hope. A gift under the angel tree can indeed help Santa come to a little child who wouldn’t understand if he didn’t. And a coat for the cold – well, few of us can imagine that difference, because thankfully, we’ve never been that cold. May sharing the family joy of this Christmas season include all of us getting to share a little of it with others. God bless each of you! George Valadie President SBA From the Editor Wow! What a fall! This issue of On Eagles’ Wings is so full of accomplishments, fun stuff and news. We hope you enjoy all the exciting things going on about and around SBA. And, be sure to read Provie Rose’s story in the Development/Parent Connection section about our very successful Spirit Shop. Thanks to Provie and her band of volunteers, you can get a variety of SBA spirit wear and novelties at very reasonable prices. What fun it is to see SBA gear all over Memphis and even in far away places. Thanks to Provie and the Spirit Shop ladies for all their continued efforts in helping us brand SBA. Please take a look at SBA’s Commercial Appeal Academic All-Stars so far this year. Each year we have a nice number of deserving honorees making a name for themselves and their school. Also, congratulations are in order for our National Merit Scholars who were recently announced by Mr. Valadie. They, along with the large number of AP Scholars, help showcase our great academic environment. Not to be outdone, are those who have brought notoriety to themselves and SBA in academics, clubs, competitions and athletics. Keep up the great work, SBA! With the launching of our new website and our Twitter and Facebook accounts, we have heard from many more alumni. To our alumni, the class of 2000 recently had their reunion starting with a casual reception at SBA. Check out all their smiling faces, a bit older, but the same in many ways, on the inside back cover. They had a great turnout and so can you. So get your class together and start planning. We are happy to help. To everyone, have a joyful and holy holiday season. See you next year! Development SBA Board of Advisors kicks off a new year By Mike Waddell, President The SBA Board of Advisors has commenced its activities for the 2010/2011 year. The Board’s goal and purpose is to contribute to the success of St. Benedict by assisting Mr. Valadie and the staff in their efforts to continuously improve upon the great “product” that our school offers. In that regard, the centerpiece of the Board’s agenda this year is a series of presentations on significant strategic and operating areas of the school. These presentations, delivered by Mr. Valadie and the staff, are intended to candidly assess the status of the given area by answering three simple questions: Where are we? Where do we want to be? What are we doing to get there? Presentations thus far have focused on curriculum, student body and faculty. We recently welcomed several new members to the Board, as well, to fill vacancies of members whose terms had expired. Joining the Board are Doug Byrnes, Chris LeBlanc, Phil Sisneros, Wanda Winette and Beth York. We appreciate these individuals agreeing to serve on the Board and look forward to their contributions and to a great year. Annual Drive benefits from social events Eagle Classic a huge success The 2010 Eagle Classic Golf Tournament was a huge success. We had a lot of golfers enjoying a warm October afternoon at Memphis National in Collierville. We had several winners in the exciting tournament with the team (foursome at left) of Bob Barlow, Pat Durkee, Ernie Dye and Larry Etter placing first with a 49. The team (foursome at right) of Monsignor Peter Buchignani, Greg Gonda, Rodney Schnadelbach and Jim Siano also scored a 49, but placed second in the tie breaker. Bishop J. Terry Steib (right) of the Diocese of Memphis played the tournament and enjoyed some SBA spirit wear with Father Mike Werkhoven (left), who was in his foursome. Make your plans for the Spring Fling Fashion Show Plans are underway for our spring event, the Spring Fling Fashion Show, on the evening of Saturday, March 26. If you would like to become involved with planning this event or be a sponsor, contact the school. It should be a fun time. While offering us the opportunity to gather and have some fun, both of these events also benefit the Annual Fund. Recently you should have received a letter from Mr. Valadie regarding this year’s Annual Fund Drive. We appreciate all the support for SBA each year. The Annual Fund is just another way that we can continue to bring the best education in a moral environment for our students. 2 Parent Connection SBA’s old spirit shop closet is now St. Francis of Assisi School’s maintenance shop. Valorie Valle is Director of facilities at the school. Hankins Family selected for Jenny Award a few Alumni. We had to work hard to gain recognition and support not only from students, faculty and staff, but from all those who love and support St. Benedict. Kathy Rybczyk was the driving force, who developed the spirit theme and began a long hard journey to get the Spirit Shop up and running together with the Pep Club and the Alumni Association. Her efforts have helped us grow and make our mark on the community. In 2007, Kathy retired from her work at St. Benedict leaving a foundation for us to follow. In the early fall of 2007, I assumed the responsibility of operating the spirit Shop with the help of parent volunteers. Those volunteers are: Julie Bardos, Jill Frierott, Shannon Schuhlein, Dee Ann Van Hoeck, Lisa Yarbro, Cathy James, Diane White, Leslie Addison and our newest volunteer Anita Murphy. These Ladies have shown the real “Spirit” of our school. They work hard and volunteer their time and efforts every Thursday at all three lunch periods. All Spirit items can be worn over the uniform every Friday. Collectively the Spirit Team determines which item to sell to represent our school in the best possible way. The items are practical and prices are reasonable so all can purchase something and wear our spirit clothes and items. Julie Bardos and Jill Frierott are instrumental in the operation as they take inventory and tag items for sale. Spirit Shop Director Provie This has been a labor of Rose maintains a much larger love on the part of all and spirit shop with an inventory the friendships gained are of SBA gear. Greg and Cathy Hankins were presented with SBA’s annual Jenny Award at the last home football game of the season. The Jenny Award is named for St. Benedict’s former student, Jenny Rybczyk, who died in a car accident in the fall following her graduation from SBA. She was an athlete with determination and desire, giving 100% in everything she did. Each year the Jenny Award is given to adult volunteers who give to the school in various ways - by donating service, time, money or a combination of these in order to benefit all SBA athletes. This year’s recipients have been active participants in the success and growth of SBA over the years, mostly under the radar, so to speak, as they are truly servants and claim no recognition or glory. Many of the enhancements in our school in the areas of academics and athletics are due to the support of the Hankins, who are worthy recipients of this very special award. They are the parents of David Hankins, a graduate of the Class of 2010. Cathy and Greg Hankins (center) receive the Jenny Award for Service to SBA from Athletic Director Greg Stiel (left) and SBA Principal George Valadie (right). Spirit Shop has gear for any Eagle occasion By Provie Rose The SBA’s Spirit Shop got really rolling in the early midnineties when the Eagles’ football team advanced to the State Play-offs. Then AD Sharon Masterson, with the help of the athletic booster club, made sure that spirit wear and decorations were available for students (high school and younger ones, alike), parents and all Eagle fans as the Eagles soared in many sports. Soon the Spirit Shop came under the direction of Kathy Rbyczyk to continue to engage our students in the spirit of the School. As a young and growing school St. Benedict had only 3 Parent Connection MAY 12............... Last Day of classes, ½ day a gift from God. As you can see by now this is a community effort to help our school in a fun, but productive way. In 2008, for the first time, the Spirit Shop was able to give the school a contribution of $5,000. In 2009, a donation of $6,000 was presented. Each year, with the dedication of our volunteers and the growth of SBA school spirit, we hope to continue these contributions to the school. The Spirit Shop is located on our Web-site at www.sbaeagles. org/store. You will find a photograph of Diocese of Memphis Bishop J. Terry Steib wearing our Spirit clothes and a listing of the items. Some of our shirts are designed by art teacher Laura Beck and all the items are listed and are shown so you can shop and order on line, either by credit card or pay-atpick-up. This takes all of twenty minutes to change the tire and then I realize that there are absolutely no stores or shops that I recall on this stretch of highway for another 70 miles. How can I drive this heavy car that far on a donut? Sounded like a good opportunity for an adventure. Parent Connection DRIVER’S PERMIT ATTENDANCE VERIFICATION FORM – is required in order for a student to get a Driver’s Permit. Students may pick up a form in the front office during regular school hours. Please have student Social Security Number to complete the form. NEWS FROM HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION Our Home and School Association is off and running for the 2010-2011 school year. So far we have sponsored our Freshman-Sophomore Tail-gate night, individual grade parent meetings, the National Honor Society Induction reception, the Junior Ring Mass reception and our teachers have been "treated" to a special day of treats each month (all the teachers really appreciate this effort). We have also assisted in First Friday Adoration. Our upcoming events include the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon in January. If you are interested in volunteering or joining Home and School, please contact Barbara Hervey at [email protected] or Shannon Schuhlein at [email protected]. Happy Holidays from your Home and School!!! PROJECT GRADUATION I made it to the next exit just a few miles up and made a choice. I go left. Within a mile I see a junkyard. You know… the kind of place people go to get that spare part they need for their car or tractor. A few minutes talking to someone and negotiating and I had a used tire that fit my car. It cost $15. “You got any idea where I can get this tire filled with air and set on my car?” I asked. “Just a few miles up on the highway. Turn right. Small gas station with no signs. They’ll do it for you cheap.” “Thanks. God Bless,” I say. I take it slow, my new tire rigged to my bike rack now waiting to be set on my car so I can make it to Memphis and my new job teaching Theology to tenth graders at St. Benedict. I made it to the next exit and turned right. A few miles down the road and I see the gas station my new friend at the junkyard told me about. We have all driven past this sort of place. Old-school analog gas gauges to tell you how much you bought and how much you owed. I was doubtful they had worked in a while. The cracks in the driveway told the same…it had been years since anyone thought this place was worthy of repair. The peeling off-white paint told the same story. I pull the car up to two men smoking cigarettes and talking. I get out of my dilapidated car. “Y’all help me with this tire?” “Sure. Passenger side, rear?” It was the only wheel he could not see. “Yep.” “Ok…it’ll take a few minutes.” “No problem,” I said. Ten minutes later, my new-old tire was ready to take me another three hours to Memphis. I look to the mechanic. “Five We already have over 100 students from the class of 2011 signed up and paid to attend the Project Graduation party after Commencement Ceremonies on May 13. Our first Trivia Night in November was a huge success. Be sure to mark your calendars for the second Trivia Night on February 26. It’s never too early to get your reservations in, as we always sell out. Tickets for seniors to attend the Project Graduation party are $125.00 until February 4, when they increase to $150. If you have questions regarding Trivia Night or Project Graduation contact committee chairs Sissy Aeschliman at 7539166 or Chuck Kantor 218-6439. “Faith Seventy Miles from Nowhere” By Patrick Smith, SBA Theology Teacher So I was on my way to Memphis a year and a half ago. Highway 78 between Birmingham and Tupelo, car fully loaded and riding low when,“BAM,” I blow a tire going 75! My first job was to take my bike off my trunk rack, remove the rack, take all the boxes and bags out of my truck and place them safely on 5 About Our Faith bucks?” he says.” Between the tire and the labor… if I had done this at Walmart it could have cost me $100. (I know because it happened in Florida a few weeks earlier.) But I made it through this adventure for $20. No problems with that tire since. I can’t be afraid to let God take control. I can’t panic. I have to trust that He will provide. All I need to do is to be willing to act on Faith. Faith is the root and the stem of all great actions. Without some sort of trust in the Maker that all will turn out well how can be begin to make this a better world? Sure, I arrived in Memphis and met George Valadie for just the second time with grease on my hands and sweat drenching my T-shirt, but that’s what God provides sometimes. We encounter situations where we can get upset or angry or sad… but Faith is, by definition, an opportunity to let us see how powerful God is. Seventy miles from the closest tire shop and Faith calms me and it seems to help me find what I need. It’s the same in the classroom. Teachers often feel 70 miles from the middle of nowhere and they may justly panic or stress. Seriously, when you have 130 grades to enter by one o’clock on Friday and you haven’t begun grading it till your Friday planning period… what are you going to do? It gets overwhelming at times. When things are like that I remember what I teach my students: “Do not be afraid!” Fear blinds us of the obvious solutions that God immediately provides us. The Faithful remain calm and in that stillness the power and Providence of God reveals itself. I suppose this is how I live my life. To others it may seem apathetic or even fatalistic. But the way I respond to crises or problem situations is more deeply rooted in Faith. I have Faith that God provides solutions to all of our problems. And I have Faith that I have been given the abilities with which to successfully address any difficulties. The willingness to use these talents and charisms are the free-will response to Faith. When I live and when I teach I remember that I have been given gifts and charisms to help me see God at work around me. Why worry? Why be afraid? We are appreciative for all these people and all those who assist us in our spiritual growth, most especially through prayer. Know that we are praying for you all! The following article was written by senior Jackson Butler as he reflected on a dire and life-threatening situation he experienced while on vacation last summer. For his heroic accomplishments, Jackson has developed a sense of something bigger than himself, made everlasting and grateful friends and was headline news in the August 13, 2010 edition of the “The Destin Log” newspaper. Thanks to all who help us worship Rescue in the Gulf Deacon Lightcap presides over Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for First Friday Adoration. By Khira Albonetti, Theology By senior Jackson Butler The students, faculty and staff would like to thank the following people for offering their time, talent and treasure to assist us all in growing closer to Our Lord. First of all, to the priests of our Diocese who have offered many Masses for our students and allowed Christ’s true presence to be in our school; Deacon Chuck Lightcap who has devoted himself to our spiritual growth through his presence, prayers and blessings at First Friday Adoration and Kathy MacDonald who coordinates the prayer warriors for First Friday Adoration and the parents who offer their time to make sure someone is always present; John Angotti who works with our students and encourages them to lift their beautiful voices in praise to Our Lord during the All-School Masses. We would also like to thank Cathy Bascom who hand made our new altar linens and Claire Tolivar who assisted her with the details. They donated their wonderful talents and these beautiful altar linens to our Chapel. It was a bright sunny day like any other day in Destin, Florida. It was July 7. I got up early that day because I had to work on the beach for Breakaway Beach Services. My job was to pick up beach set-ups and watch the beach. I did not know if the waves were good for surfing or skim boarding, so I brought both boards. As I strapped my boards to the golf cart I was unaware that I was about to make a difference for a family from Texas. My parents and I arrived at the beach around 11:00 a.m. As my parents went to their chairs, I looked out at the water. There were 10 to 15 foot waves crashing, and a current that could suck you out into the mouth of the sea. I turned my head to see a red flag. Pete Gunn, my boss, came to me and told me what I had to do and we walked back to my golf cart. As he left and I was grabbing for my surfboard, I was unaware that two boys, Grayson Jennings, age 8, and Grayson’s cousin Ryan Howard, age 9, were being sucked out into the sea. My father 6 About Our Faith † In Memoriam The faculty, staff and students of St. Benedict at Auburndale offer our most sincere condolences to all those families who have lost loved ones. We remember them and all our dearly beloved in our daily prayers and Masses. Mary Ann Bailey, 79, mother of long-time SBA football concession volunteer and Jenny Award recipient Clay Bailey, passed away on October 19, 2010. Robert Caprio, father of Michael ('11) and Aaron ('13) Caprio, passed away on December 6, 1010. George Ewing Hancock, Sr., 85, father of SBA science teacher Jamie Schneider, passed away on July 23, 2010. Paul John Jasina, 64, father of SBA alum Paul Jasina (’90), passed away on August 26, 2010. Patricia Kelly-Donaldson, 58, mother of SBA alum Derek Kelly (’04), passed away on July 30, 2010. John Thomas, 59 father of alums Brooke Thomas Wilson (’99), Amber Thomas Plass (’01), Drew Thomas (’06) and father-in-law of Tommy Plass (’00), passed away on October 15, 2010. David Butler and neighbor Gary Landers went out in the water after the kids with boogie boards, but so did Brad Jennings, father and uncle of the children, with nothing to float on. I remember exactly what the beach looked like as I returned. People running everywhere screaming, pointing and cries of children. I had no idea what was going on; all I saw was my dad waving and pointing at the beach. I thought he was telling me to hurry and go surf, but as I got closer to him I realized something was wrong. I heard people screaming, “He is still in the water!” I looked and saw two kids, Grayson and Ryan being pulled in and a man, Brad, out in the water. My friend began yelling, “JACKSON GIVE ME YOUR BOARD!” I stared at her with a blank look and then heard my mom yell, “Jackson do not go in the water, you are not a lifeguard.” I looked at my dad as my mom and friend were yelling at me and I said, “I can save him.” He told me, “Go out there.” I strapped on the leash and ran toward the waves. I heard nothing but the waves and Brad’s voice. I felt nothing. The waves crashing on me did not hurt, my arms paddling 60 yards out were not tired, and I only had one thought going through my mind and that was, I will not allow him to die. I got closer to him and saw his blue-pale face. He was spewing water and I screamed, “Dude grab my board. I am coming to help, try and stay above the water. Do not give up!” As I got closer I slid off my board and pushed it toward him. Immediately he grabbed the board and began spitting up water. I held the board and his arm. I kept telling him, “Hold on do not let go. You’re safe now.” As we reached shore his wife helped me carry him to shore. We laid him down in a chair and called for an ambulance. He was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a “non-fatal drowning.” Brad is alive today with his family in Houston, Texas. He has expressed how glad he was for me being there and how extremely grateful he is. We still keep in touch and I am happy to see him with his family. Every time I see Brad or look at the ocean I think about how, if I was never there he could have died, but I was there and he is alive. “So Others May Live” is what I live by now and I will forever live my life to help and protect others. The pieces of original student work were selected from past art shows and presented to the hospital as a thank you for their continued support of the arts in the Catholic Schools and hosting the annual Fine Arts Exhibit each spring. Three students actually were chosen from that collection to have work permanently displayed, the two from St. Benedict and one from St. Dominic School. Erin’s work was created when she was in the seventh grade at St. Francis (she is now a freshman) and Dillon’s work was done last year as a freshman. On hand for the presentation were (from left) Catholic Schools Fine Arts Director Laurie Cotros, Secretary of Education and Superintendent of Catholic Schools Dr. Mary McDonald, St. Dominic art teacher Lynn Lofton, St. Francis art teacher, DeEtta Jones, Erin Peel, SBA Director of Academics Beth Brock, SBA art teacher Shirley Lile and Dillon’s father Mike Allen. Dillon was unable to attend the ceremony. 10 Achievements Saba Scholarship awarded to Katherine Knickerbocker In the Winter/Spring 2010 issue of On Eagles’ Wings, we announced a new scholarship in memory of Nabil “Bill” Saba established by his family after his untimely death in 2006 at the young age of 37. The Saba family holds SBA near to their heart and wanted to remember Bill through this scholarship by honoring a worthy student who appreciates the education received here. The first Nabil “Bill” Scholarship was awarded to senior Katherine Knickerbocker for her essay, “How my St. Benedict Education Will Help me Succeed in College.” In her essay, Katherine gave tribute to the teachers she has had at SBA over the years, particularly for their encouragement and helping her develop a good work ethic and study habits. She feels that this foundation will follow through college, where she plans to study and work towards becoming a teacher herself. Presenting this year’s scholarship award were members of the Saba family; Amira Saba (center right), mother of Bill and his sister Kathy Saba (right). Mr. Valadie was also on hand for the presentation to Katherine (center) along with her parents Jon and Janna Knickerbocker (back row). SBA seniors gain Eagle Scout recognition Senior Brett Barnett achieved his Eagle Scout rank and was inducted at a ceremony in the SBA chapel on November 5. He is in Scout Troop 457 with St. Francis Church. For his Eagle project he led a crew at St. Francis Church to add 11 energy-efficient security spotlights in the courtyard, to mulch the flowerbeds and pressure wash the fountain and benches. He finished his project in May in time for the Church’s 25th Anniversary kick-off and reception in the courtyard. Brett passed his Board of Review in September. 11 Brett (center) with his father (left) and Scoutmaster Kevin Rawon. Wade Cline also earned his Eagle Scout rank on October 5. After completion of his requirements, the Eastern Board of Review conferred his Eagle Rank. Principal George Valadie introduced the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus-Deacon Lee R Hurst Assembly (a Catholic organization of men from Bartlett, Cordova and Fayette County, and whose mission is charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism). They presented the flags and called the students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and remain standing for the National Anthem provided by the SBA orchestra and choir. The Knights, who included many veterans, then posted the colors followed by the presentation of the POW-MIA Flag, explaining that it will never be posted until every POW-MIA is found. This was followed by SBA Eagle Scouts demonstrating the proper way to fold the American Flag, while Knights’ representative John Stratman described the symbolism of each step. given to charity. This year, they chose the “Hope for Warriors” program that grants wishes to wounded soldiers. Brendan’s wish is to have a home built that will accommodate him with the wounds he received in battle. He was wounded on Easter Sunday in 2009 and lost three limbs with multiple other injuries when an EFP (explosively formed projectile) bomb struck the vehicle in which he was riding. He later had to have the only limb left (a leg) amputated, as well. He is a quadruple amputee. Through the Penny Wars the students raised $2,000 towards the effort of providing Brendan with his home. In the video, he described for the students how he sustained his injuries, but also how he is overcoming them with his four new prostheses that are providing limbs for him to function and walk on his own. He explained that he was always an athlete and intends to continue and that if someone tells him he can’t or shouldn’t do something, it gives him determination to prove otherwise. During the video presentation, not a sound could be heard in the student audience, except some sniffles from the tears that were flowing. Following the video with Brendan, Mr. Stratman reminded the students that it is because of a soldier, down through the history of our country, that we have the freedoms we enjoy. Mr. Valadie, then, introduced those veterans in attendance; they included parents and grandparents of students and some retired military that are SBA faculty and staff members along with those represented by the Knights of Columbus. Representing the military were: Rick Morning, USMC (Ret), Neal Walls, US Army (Ret); Tom Welsh, US Navy (active); Kim Brichacek, US Navy (active); Viet Nam Veteran Colette Irene Follin, US Navy (Ret); Mike Murphy, US Navy Reserve; World War II Veteran Henry McCrarey, Army Air Force (Ret), who received a standing ovation when he was introduced; Cain Carson USMC Reserve (Ret), Jack DeFer, US Army (Ret), Viet Nam Veteran Jack Schenkel, USAF (Ret); Jim Schenkel, US Army Reserves and Ken Fancher US Navy Reserves. The SBA Eagle Scouts represented were seniors Brett Barnett, Louis DeGruy and Andrew Zazzara and junior Matt Murphy. Coordinator of the ceremony was SBA faculty member Mary Lou Stauffer. After the flag demonstration, the students heard, by video, from SPC Brendan Marrocco (23), an injured soldier that the school adopted through the Student Government Association. Each year during Homecoming Week, SBA students have a variety of spirit activities one of which is the Penny Wars. There’s a lot going on in Eagle Country The soft lighting at dusk of the rotunda makes for a beautiful backdrop following the wedding in SBA’s Chapel of Mr. and Mrs. Valadie’s daughter Meg and new husband Jeremy Dunn. In September, Opera Memphis provided two artists-inresidence to speak, and perform, for Honors and AP World History students about the connections between ancient Egypt and the Opera, "Aida.” There were student activities, discussions and the artists’ performance of some of the music from the Opera, which was staged at the Cannon Center. 14 On & Off Campus SBA’s former principals celebrate St. Francis honor SBA’s Homecoming was a huge success with a win over Manassas, 52-30. The highlight, of course, of the night besides sophomore Jordan Wilkins’ record-breaking rushing yardage of 334 yards, was the introduction of the Homecoming Court and crowning of this year’s queen. Ashley Magnifico was chosen by the students as this year’s queen in a senior court of seven students. A member of the 2009 Court, Katie Jarvis, was on hand to present Ashley with her crown. Mr. Valadie and Ashley’s dad also joined in with congratulations. The 2010 Homecoming Court Siblings seem to always be part of SBA’s Homecoming ceremony. This follows a fourth place finish at the AAU Regional finals in July in Knoxville and a first place finish at the USA Track and Field Tennessee championship in Nashville in June. Senior soccer star Julie Eckel was selected to play in the Tennessee State Soccer Association’s exhibition match in July in Chattanooga between players from the Tennessee Olympic Development Program (ODP) and the South Korea U17 Girls National Team. The team from South Korea was training in Atlanta for several weeks in advance of the under-17 Women's World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago in September. The game was 0-0 at the half but South Korea scored two goals in the second half to win 2-1. Sophomore and Soaring Eagles Track Club member Colin Pitawanakwat (left) placed second in the 3000M race (intermediate level) in the Regional Junior Olympic Meet held in Monroe, LA in July. The Region Meet included teams from all over the south. The top three finishers advanced to the National Junior Olympic meet, but Colin was not able to compete due to a previous commitment. Senior Symone Daniels and sophomore Madison Luckett were members of the Memphis Elite 16U Girls’ Basketball Team, sponsored by Landers Ford of Southaven, who advanced to the National Championship in Orlando and finished as national runner-up. Symone’s dad, Eric, was coach of the team and serves as an SBA assistant girls basketball coach. FALL SPORTS WRAP – Cross Country - Both the boys and girls teams finished second in the WTCCL County Championships, advancing them to State action. At the State Meet, the boys had a fourth place finish overall out of 11 teams and placed above all other West Region, Division II-AA teams. The girls finished sixth overall out of 11 teams. Golf - Boys and Girls Golf had good seasons with the boys finishing 18-23 for the year and the girls finishing third in the region match to advance to the state. Football – The Eagles had a winning 6-5 record in what was an exciting year of football. A lot of school records were broken over the season, most notably, the single game rushing record of 334 yards by sophomore Jordan Wilkins in the Homecoming win over Manassas. Look for great things to come in Eagles’ football. Girls Soccer – The Lady Eagles had a great year with an 8-3-5 record and a second place finish in the region. This advanced them to the State Quarterfinals, again, this year. Volleyball – Another outstanding year for SBA volleyball teams. The freshmen, JV and varsity teams all finished with winning records – the Freshmen were 18-1, with tournament wins; the JV were 29-2, also with tournament wins. The varsity advanced to State action, again, this year and finished as State runner-up and with a record of 27-14. They were ranked in the 17 Sports top three in the Metro area the entire season. Cheer & Dance - The SBA cheer and dance squads have had another great fall in competitions. In mid-November, the varsity dance team took first place in the Mid-South Regionals and the JV dance team finished second in their division. The varsity cheer team qualified for Nationals by taking first place. In the State competition on November 20, the varsity dance team placed fifth in Pom and second in Hip Hop and the JV dance squad captured the first place trophy in Hip Hop. The varsity cheer team finished as State runner-up out of five teams in the large school division. Also for cheer, Hannah Scott and Katie Zazzara have been selected for this year’s Intelligence Team (“IT”), an internship for Varsity Brands Corporation. Symone Daniels signs with Drake Lady Eagles basketball star, Symone Daniels (forward), who had verbally committed to Division I Drake University of the Missouri Valley Conference, signed a National Letter of Intent on National Early Signing Day in November. Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game taps SBA player and coach Head Football Coach Mike David was selected to coach in the Auto Zone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game on Dec. 11 at MUS. He assisted Coach Rahnmann Slocum of Fairley High School for the "Red Team." Coach David had the opportunity to coach SBA senior running back Trey Wilkins who was selected an All-Star. On hand for the festivities were the SBA Basketball Staff, (back row-from left) team statistician Don Williams, Assistant Coach Caitlin Doyle Motte (’03) and Head Women’s Coach Don Sebren.(Seated-from left) Symone’s sister Danielle Ballard, her Mother Tomiko Daniels, Symone and her father Eric Daniels, also an SBA Assistant Coach. Trey Wilkins Chosen Touchdown Club Player of the Week St. Benedict wide receiver, Trey Wilkins, was the first Offensive Player of the Week honoree at the Memphis Touchdown Club at their luncheon in August. Trey (center) is congratulated by Touchdown Club President Bill Harper (left) and SBA’s Head Coach Mike David (right). SBA senior running back Trey Wilkins receives his Touchdown Club Award from AutoZone Liberty Bowl Executive Director Steve Ehrhart. Baseball breaks ground on new field house We’re sure you have noticed that the third base dugout at the Eagles ball field has been leveled and construction is beginning for a new two-level field house which will include a new press box, locker area, coaches’ area, storage and public restrooms. Because of the committed efforts of many (parents, alumni parents, school and diocesan officials) and the wonderful generosity of some anonymous donors, this enhancement is possible. Plans are to have an official dedication upon completion and near the opening of the 2011 season. In the history of SBA this is one of many major enhancements for our athletic program. In baseball, there was the initial version of the field. Then there was the addition of lights. Not too long ago, we replaced rickety wooden bleachers and a scorer’s hut with the ones we currently enjoy. Another generous donor helped us build new and better dugouts, a concession stand as well as the batting cage along Chimneyrock. Then we’ve added another batting cage, an incredible scoreboard and a most impressive outfield fence. Every single one has been made possible by the kindness and generosity of people who decided to share from the resources they had to benefit the students of SBA. Sometimes that included their own child and sometimes they didn’t have a single baseball player in their family. That sort of giving always amazes and inspires us. 18 Sports Boys & Girls Basketball Schedule Date Location Nov 16 Houston Nov 16 Brighton Nov 20 Brighton Nov 19 Home Nov 22 Away Nov 23 Away Central HS Nov 26 Turkey Jam Nov 26 Cleveland,TN Central HS Nov 27 Turkey Jam Nov 27 Cleveland, TN Nov 30 Home Dec 1 Away Dec 2 Home Dec 3 Away Dec 4 Home Dec 6 Home Dec 9 Home Dec 11 Home Dec 11 Home Dec 16-18 Ms Bl. Christin tells us, “Tony has been battling cancer for the last 17 years and St. Jude has been there every step of the way. Due to their never-ending research and their amazing doctors my brother is still here fighting his battle and enjoying life. The only reason St. Jude is able to stay open is due to donations, because they do not treat based on a patient’s ability to pay. That is why this event is so important to me. I want to make sure my brother and others like him will be able to receive treatment as long as it is needed and St. Jude’s doors will always remain open. My brother participated in endurance events as a kid and due to his cancer he is no longer able to. I run for my brother, because he is the strongest and bravest person I know. I run because he can’t and I will always remember how lucky I am to be able to do something as simple as running.” She has developed a team of St. Jude heroes called “Run for Tony.” They all hope to raise at least $250 each. TriArt’s production benefits from a dashing Curly in the form Ryan Speakman…Kudos go immediately to Speakman – Curley is for all intents and purposes, the driving force of this musical…. Speakman, a recent graduate of NYU, has a delightfully deep baritone sound –the crucial moments are those opening bars of Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’, as the lights raise on Aunt Eller (Glenda Lauten) churning butter and Speakman’s silhouette next to the windmill. Curley has to set the tone (hopeful and enthusiastic) as well as drip that song over the audience like warm honey.
