Editor’s Message
What makes our community great?
Please let me know your ideas so I can share them with WillowRidge
residents.
Recently, I received a suggestion to
recognize community volunteers. I think
this is a great idea – watch the newsletter in coming months. If you know
someone who deserves recognition, please send me some information
including both your and the volunteer’s contact information.
I recently received a heart-warming call from my 12-year old neighbour
Maddison asking what she and her young friends could do in our
neighbourhood. I was able to connect her with the right people to
volunteer at our Community Cleanup and Family Halloween Party. This creates a triple-win for our youth, our hard-working
organizers and our community as a whole.
I want take this a step further and publish (free of charge) volunteer opportunities in our newsletter and on our website. These
could be one-time events or ongoing commitments, big or small jobs, and for ages 10 or 100! If you know of a volunteer
opportunity in or near WillowRidge, please send me some information and I’ll try to spread the word. Together, we can
make this community even greater!
Cheers, Colleen Gnyp, Director of Communications, WRCA

This yard is my urban oasis. A quarter acre of perfect green lawns, huge trees, decks, and privacy. Ferns
and cedar pathways remind me of B.C. rainforests. A large Koi named Fred lives in the pond(only during the
warm months) and there are grapes and raspberries growing in the sunny back garden. There’s Butterburr
with 2 foot wide leaves near the pond and lots of contemplative nooks and corners to explore. This yard is a
wonderful, therapeutic ongoing process.
Nomination: Rob and Lorraine Kettle
Nominated by: Leslie Smith
Rob and Lorraine’s yard has front wonderful curb appeal and the backyard is equally beautiful. The front yard
is planted with a beautiful mix of shrubs and grasses. The backyard has a continuous border planted with
contrasting shrubs and perennials, and the lawn is lush. A splashing waterfall and pond are the focal point of
the SW corner of the back yard. The back yard also contains vegetable boxes (interspersed with annuals) and a
bee and butterfly garden in the NW corner. Even during September, this garden is going strong. Simply lovely.

Nomination: Yoko Strobl
Nominated by: Annetta Starratt
I love the fastidious work that Yoko has down to her property both front and back. Her groundcover sedums
and saxifrages are so artistic. And she’s done it all by herself. The back yard attracts Wrens Robins and
Chickadees, the best Judges of safe and serene refuges. Yoko planted her Annuals from seed, both vegetables
and flowers. The colors in Spring, Summer and Fall are all gorgeous. It is amazing what one little lady can
accomplish.
WE NEED YOU!
If you did not know, the outdoor rinks are
maintained 100% by volunteers. Without
volunteers, there will be no ice, and the more
volunteers we get – the easier the job becomes.
Many of our long time volunteers no longer even
have children who play hockey or use the rink. Please
consider joining us. It is an easy, fun, and satisfying task.
It would be helpful it you could think about what nights would be
good for you and contact the WRCA Office (Call 403.271.8044 or
email [email protected]). The staff will pass your information on
to the ICE Volunteers Co-ordinator. He will contact you so that you
can get out and help flood the rinks!

Bylaws Related to Snow and Ice
The City enforces bylaws related to snow and ice control on
sidewalks. It is your responsibility to remove all snow and
ice from sidewalks and pathways in front of or on the side
of your property. Sidewalks and pathway surfaces should be
bare and completely clear of snow and ice.
Snow Angels
Keeping sidewalks shoveled, ice-free and
safe can be very challenging
for older adults and other
Calgarians who have
limited mobility. Snow
Angels is a campaign
that encourages
Calgarians to help
neighbours in need
with snow removal.

Space your hands on the shovel to increase leverage.
Stand with your feet apart, knees bent and back straight.
Place your front foot close to the shovel.
Put weight on your front foot. Step forward and use
your legs to load a small amount of snow onto the
shovel. Remember the wetter the snow, the heavier it is.
Lift with your legs; do not bend at the waist.
Keep the shovel close to your body.
Walk to where you want to dump the snow. Turn your
feet in the direction you are throwing the snow. Do not
twist the waist.
Pace yourself. Take appropriate rest breaks.
Apply road salt/de-icer wherever necessary.

Community Clean-up Update
Your Official Community Newsletter
Our Community Clean Up Day on Sunday September 27 was a CRUSHING success!
In conjunction with the City of Calgary, our neighbours were able to unload their homes and yards of many unwanted items. We
also hosted Technotrash, which allowed WillowRidge to keep their electronics out of Calgary Landfills! We also hosted Elisa
Humphreys from Clothing for a Cause which recycles reusable clothing and household textiles in order to provide assistance to
local and international groups. We also sold Willowridge Community memberships. A fine, sunny day provided much community
spirit and camaraderie and a huge thanks to the young folks that came out to Volunteer - Nolan Mitchell, Jack Parker, and
Maddison Whitnell. So nice to see the next generation step up! Also thanks to our Board Members/Staff who came out in full force!

Mapleridge Cooperative Preschool
During the month of October, Mapleridge Cooperative Preschool
celebrated a spook-tacular Halloween Party. The wonderful costumes, yummy
treats, fun games and crafts made it a great success! Thank you to everyone
who helped out. Also, the four-year- olds got lost and eventually found while
navigating their way through the giant corn labyrinths at The Calgary Corn
Maze. They enjoyed jumping on giant bouncy pillows and spending time with the
barnyard animals before heading home on the big yellow school bus.
This month at MCP, the four-year-olds will enter the amazing world of dinosaurs, while the three-year-olds will be exploring colours
and shapes. We have planned another fieldtrip this month for the 4-year-old classes to visit Fish Creek Library. The children will learn
about good library manners, where to find books, and how to borrow books.
Each November, the students of Mapleridge Cooperative Preschool receive a customized school t-shirt that they printed their names
on. Students proudly wear it to school and on special fieldtrips. It makes a treasured keepsake for the students and Mrs. Killam looks
fabulous in hers too!
If you would like to get some more information about MCP please contact us at 403-278-9594, [email protected],
or visit the web site at www.mapleridgepreschool.com
Ecole St. Cecilia School
November’s arrival brings with it exciting activities for the students at École St. Cecilia School.
On November 10th, students will participate in a Remembrance Day Celebration, honouring the important contribution of our
veterans. Then, later in the month, students will learn more about our patron saint during the St. Cecilia Feast Day Liturgy. St. Cecilia
is the Catholic Patroness of Musicians and this celebration will be punctuated with song in recognition of her role.
For our older students, November means new experiences. Our grade three and four students will participate in swimming lessons at
Acadia Pool and grade four to six students will be introduced to Netball, a game comparable to basketball. Our grade five students will
also enjoy a field trip to the ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen to learn about cooking skills and cooking safety.
École St. Cecilia School is a French Immersion Catholic Elementary School for children from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The school
serves most communities south of Glenmore Trail and east of McLeod Trail.

Senior Pet Care
It’s that time of year again where we like to take special care of our senior patients.
There can be lots of disease processes that mask themselves as “just old age”
or “slowing down”. This is not usually the case and in many circumstances it
is due to medical conditions that can be managed either through diet or
prescription drugs or sometimes a combination of both.
When Does “Senior” Start?
Pets are considered senior at about age 7. Keep in mind that every year
for a dog or cat is equivalent to 7 human years. This means your 7 year
old pet is actually 49 in human years.
Signs Of A Problem: If your pet is exhibiting any of these
symptoms, call our office at 403-278-9311.
•
Increase in water consumption or urination
•
Hair loss or lumps
•
Unexplained weight loss or gain
•
Sudden appetite changes
•
Stiff getting up, reluctant to jump into the vehicle
or on the couch
•
Excessive panting, drooling or bad breath
Early Detection of Your Senior Pet’s Health Problems
Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, pets are living longer. New technologies and tests help us to detect
disease sooner. Early disease detection and treatment can extend and improve the quality of your pets’ life.
We are here to help your pet into their twilight years with ease.
Call our office to schedule your pet for its senior exam 403-278-9311.

BECOME A CITIZEN SCIENTIST & PROTECT YOUR FAMILY FROM CANCER
Cancer researchers want you to test your homes for radon gas.
~ Written by The Robson DNA Science Centre (part of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute at the University of Calgary)
Did you know that even non-smokers can get lung cancer? Did you know that the cause of these cancers may be in your home, but
cannot be seen? Each year one to four thousand new Canadian lung cancer cases are caused by inhaling a colourless and odourless
gas called radon, the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Radon is a natural part of soil gas, the air that exists in the ground
underneath our homes that can seep through foundations and accumulate in houses. The problem is that radon is radioactive
and, once inhaled, will damage the DNA of the lungs, enormously increasing the risk of those lung cells turning into
cancer. What is especially scary is that decaying radon can even precipitate in lungs, where it sticks forever constantly emitting
radiation. It is no wonder that the World Health Organization classifies radon as being just as cancer-causing as asbestos or mustard
gas.
University of Calgary cancer researcher Dr. Aaron Goodarzi
is helping understand radon-induced cancer in Alberta, and
has been collecting data on the levels of household radon in
the four quadrants of Calgary as well as Cochrane, Okotoks,
High River, Canmore and many other surrounding towns.
The data collected by his lab indicates an alarming trend: 1 in
5 of our homes contain radon over the maximum acceptable
concentrations indicated by Health Canada.
“Radon gas is, for the Southern Alberta, a significant public
health concern but one which is largely invisible to the public
eye. Without question, if you live in a home with high radon,
your lungs are being exposed to DNA-mutating radiation that
can cause lung cancer even in people who have never smoked
a day in their lives.” says Goodarzi, who is a member of the
Robson DNA Science Centre at the University of Calgary’s
Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute.
Dr. Goodarzi’s team, which includes doctors who treat lung
cancer at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, wants to collect as
much data on household radon in Alberta as possible, and
are urging the public to volunteer to test their homes starting
this November, which is Lung Awareness Month. They have
contracted certified professionals to provide tests which are
very simple to conduct and are available (at cost) for only $45.
All data will go towards cancer research efforts in Alberta, and
will be made anonymous (meaning researchers only get readings
by postal code region) to preserve confidentiality. Volunteers
will receive their own radon readings and professional advice on
what to do if their home comes back high. Dr. Goodarzi stresses
that the prospect of high readings are no reason to panic or
avoid testing.
“Knowledge is power” he says, “and it is far preferable to know about a potentially life-threatening problem, and have the chance
to remove it, than being in the dark until it is too late - meaning a cancer diagnosis. Having a high radon level is like finding you have
a leaky roof, it is no reason to move from the home you love. You just fix it. And once fixed, the problem is gone. Home values are
improved by radon testing (and mitigation of any problem) as you now KNOW that your home is 100% safe from a cancer-causing
problem very common in the Prairies.

Construction: Macleod Trail & 162 Avenue S Interchange
I am so happy that we are getting this project under way so soon.
Anyone in the south knows it is an absolute necessity. I was also
very pleased to see a construction plan that minimizes traffic
impact, but there is no getting around the fact that there will be
some growing pains.
Construction has already begun, and will likely end two years
from now. If you think this will affect you then I suggest you take
note of the website www.calgary.ca/macleod162ave. It contains
information that you want. I will also be keeping my website
(www.calgary.ca/ward14) updated, and sending emails to those
on my ward-wide mailing list. If you would like to be on that list,
please sign up at www.calgary.ca/ward14connect. Otherwise I
can’t send them to you.
Ward 14 Communities BBQ: Wrap-up and Some Well
Deserved Thank Yous!
I’ve always believed that my Ward 14 Communities BBQ would
be a success, but I must admit that even I was a little surprised by
the size of the turnout this year. It was gigantic!
We gave out just short of 400 community association
memberships this year. That translates to about $10,500 worth
in cheques that will go to those community associations. We
welcomed approximately 2000 visitors to the Ward 14 BBQ
grounds.
Of course, there are many people to thank for this huge success.
There were so many community groups, exhibitors, volunteers,
and of course the community associations themselves who
helped. I think I say this every year, but there are truly not
enough words to express my gratitude.
Pg. 29 November 2015 l
There is another group that deserves a very special thank you.
They gave their time and opened up their wallets. It can’t be fun
to read a list in a block paragraph (like I have done in the past),
so I will try bullet points and hope it works well in community
newsletter format.
Thank you to the Ward 14 Communities BBQ’s generous
sponsors:

Hello Friends!
It’s November already! It’s hard to
believe the year is almost over.
It’s also been six months since Alberta’s historic election in May.
It has been an honour to begin representing you and getting
to know more about the people and organizations that make
Calgary Acadia a great place to live.
Here are some of the exciting things your Government has
been up to in that short time:
We added $103 million in funding for Alberta’s public schools
to support enrollment growth in our K-12 system. By making
the decision to restore funding ahead of a full budget in the
fall, school boards were given time to prepare properly for the
2015-16 year.
We also froze tuition and other fees for Alberta’s university
and college students, rolling back the “market modifier” that
allowed Institutions to charge higher fees for certain programs.
We know how important a post-secondary education is in
today’s economy, so our Government has committed to
freezing tuition fees for the next two years, allowing families to
plan and budget for their child’s education.
We also reinvested in Health Care, adding $150 million to
maintain more than 1,500 front-line positions. By reversing the
previous government’s cuts to Health Care, we are ensuring
our front-line workers have what they need to deliver the
health care upon which Alberta families rely. Additionally, our
Government invested in an additional 400 midwifery courses of
care, so more families are able to receive prenatal and postnatal
care with a midwife, saving costs for our Health system, as well
as freeing up time for our Obstetricians to focus on higher-risk
pregnancies.
Our Government has also taken the time to do a thorough
review of the Provincial Budget, to ensure that we tabled a
fiscal plan that is right for Alberta and that reflects the current
world oil market. During the election, Albertans said loud and
clear that they wanted their Government to take a deliberative
approach to the Budget, and to take the time to get it right
Pg. 30 November 2015 – not just announcing across-the-board cuts, or instituting
spending freezes without considering the impact on Alberta
families. Our Government spent the summer consulting
with business and community leaders across the province.
We received tens of thousands of comments via the online
budget portal, and had nearly 90,000 Albertans take part in the
telephone town halls about the Budget.
The Budget that we tabled last month funds those services that
Albertans rely on, invests in our future, and provides a path to
balance. We know that times aren’t easy right now, and we’re
working to encourage innovation and diversity in our economy,
and supporting Alberta’s job creators.
I look forward to sharing even more of our accomplishments as
we move through the Fall Legislature Session and throughout
our mandate. If you have any questions, compliments or
concerns about the steps our government is taking, I want to
hear from you.
Likewise, if I can be helpful in you dealing with provincial
government programs or services, please contact me – you can
count on me to assist you to the best of my ability.
