(Photo: Michael Kwas) A passion for the industry and a love for the sport is the only form of compensation this volunteer photographer requires at this year’s Mac’s AAA Midget World Invitational Hockey Tournament. Kwas’ open ended albums on social media have given team access to up-close, high quality images. This tournament is only one of the highlights on his impressive resume. In 2012, he took pictures for the World Juniors Championships, held in Calgary. During the event, he was coached from a professional International Hockey Federation (IHF) photographer and was selected as one of the Russian team’s personal shooters. “To me it was really neat to be a part of because it was such a big stage. The whole world was watching, and people from around the world got to see my work,” says Kwas. A life-long-hockey player, Kwas was scouted to the University of Colorado, after playing for Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) College. He majored in communications/business, and picked up photography on the side. He says being a player gives him an advantage behind the camera because “he can keep track of the plays, know where players are and follow the puck for better shots.” At the rink he’s clearly a well-known guy, with friends in and around the arena. This will be his second year helping out full time for the event, and his photos have since been featured on CBC and other news outlets. Though the photo biz is competitive, he still enjoys opportunities like this to flex his creative muscles, while working towards getting his full fire firefighter credentials. Never in the spotlight and always behind the scenes, those of us at the Ricoh Breakaway and the Mac’s Tournament would like to say a special thank you to this year’s on-site game day photographer. This year’s tournament media lead, Elisha Jackson, is also the Canadian Children’s Wish Foundation manager of resource development. A hidden hero within the rink, she is in charge of raising the dollars that help grant over 23,000 children’s wishes nationally. As a Mac’s volunteer and wish coordinator, Jackson heard about an 18 year old that was in need of a pick me up. “It was extra special to have met Shadee through the tournament. Maybe, if I hadn’t have volunteered, we may never have found him,” says Jackson. Shadee Marhi was a hard working midget hockey player, who wasn’t afraid to put it all on the ice playing defence for his Calgary Northstars team. In the season of 2014, he sought help for a painful shin injury. The irritation was caused by a rare cancerous Synovial Sarcoma mass. Marhi’s hockey future came crashing to a halt. Even though his long-term health is unclear, his positivity and winning attitude are what makes him a perfect candidate for a Children’s Wish experience. “When I called him to let him know that he would probably qualify for a wish, the first thing he said to me was, ‘that sounds really great, but I would hate to take it away from another child,’” Jackson explains. Marhi is now on track to meet his NBA hero, Kevin Durant, from the Oklahoma City Thunder. In the process he has become a bit of a hero himself, as a Children’s Wish ambassador. He says it was easy to want to give back to an Skate sharpening and SSAC Boston Pizza Athletics warm up. organization, and the people within it, that have done so much for him. “Being diagnosed with cancer is not easy for anyone. In a dark time like that, when people are around to support you, it definitely makes a difference. It honestly leaves me speechless sometimes. The lengths they go for someone they don’t even know, it’s crazy,” says Marhi. Jackson has been with the organization for five plus years, she and the Children’s Wish Foundation help grant over 120 Alberta wishes in a year alone. Anyone can refer a child, it can be a neighbour, a teacher or even the child themselves. The organization doesn’t receive any government funding and is directly supported by community fundraising. She says being a part of the fundraisers and seeing the first hand generosity of others is what keeps her going. “It’s pretty remarkable how entire communities comes together to make things like this happen, for one common goal: to grant wishes,” she gushes.
