Mac’s 2015/16 Newcomers Have Come to Play
It’s aboot time we welcomed this year’s international teams

Those of us at the Mac’s AAA
Midget World Invitational Hockey Tournament would like to give a warm welcome to this year’s international teams.
The California Wave joined the returning Western States Hockey League
(WSHL) Ontario California Avalanche,
while the Austrian U18 National Team
and the Belarus U17 National Team
skated for the first time at the Mac’s, on
Dec. 26th.
Ontario Avalanche
Hailing out of Ontario, California, the returning Mac’s Tournament
Ontario Avalanche, is off to a great
WSHL 2015/16 American season. New
head coach, Jaime Thompson, has led
the team to a 17-10 record so far. He is
hoping to maintain that record, upon
returning to regular league play in early
January.
Tiffany Favilla, mother of Avalanche player #19 Ryan Favilla, said, “I
think the boys are really excited about
being here. They were really pumped
up before the game and ready to play.
They’ve been working hard on and off
the ice practicing.”
While the enthusiasm is there,
the team has suffered several setbacks
leading up to the tournament. With
players unable to play at the Mac’s due
to injuries and off ice issues, the teams’
hardship is apparent by just looking at
the amount of players they have on the
bench.
Off to a rocky start in Canada,
the boys lost 8-0 to the Lloydminster
Bandit Pipeline Bobcats in their first
game, on Dec. 26th at the Father David
Bauer Arena. In last year’s Mac’s Tournament appearance, the team finished
2-2 in the round robin, but did not
advance to the quarter final round.
California Wave
Also from Ontario, California, this is the California Waves’ first
year competing at the Mac’s. Although
they’re new, Head Coach Michael
Lewis said the team has played several
games in the Okanagan, and they are
not strangers to the Canadian style of
hockey.
“It’s Canadian hockey. It’s
rough, it’s tough, it’s skill; so you’re
playing the entire game, and I think
that’s what the kids need to do to get
better and move to the next level.”
With only six returning players, Lewis added that the team is still
growing. He says they still have room to
improve in order to play at the highest
level, but regardless he is excited about
the experience that the Mac’s Tournament can offer.
“It’s such a prestigious tournament. We had a hard time getting in.
I’ve had a midget team for probably
the last 10 years. It’s hard because the
top teams are here. We were over the
moon to get an invite this year and to be
accepted. It’s probably the best midget
tournament in terms of how it’s run, you
know it’s an honour.”
In their first tournament game
yesterday against the Moose Jaw Generals, the Wave fell 4-2 in a heated game.
U18 Austria National
“This is a very special experience for the young players. To attend a
game or a tournament in Canada, one
you do not forget so quickly,” said head
coach Dieter Werfring, translated to
English from the U18 website.
In the 2015 Austrian Hockey
Board Tournament, held in in November, the team is coming off a 2-1 victory
over Slovenia, a 5-3 victory over Hungary and a 3-2 loss against Italy.
Traditionally, the U18 Austria
National Team has one of the most
intense programs of all of the Austrian
Ice Hockey Federation national teams.

Crowd Goes Mad at the Mac’s for Parents
Mac’s Tournament Hosts Opening Ceremony at Max Bell
Parents were honoured at the 38th Mac’s AAA Midget World Invitational Hockey Tournament Opening Ceremony. On-ice
parents were asked what it was like to be the guardians of an elite hockey player. One response said it all, “It’s an adventure.”
A Calgary Buffaloes player, laced up for his team’s feature match against the U18 Austria National Team, commemorated the
parents with a universal, “Thank you for all that you do for me.” Cheering erupted as a packed Max Bell Arena crowd cheered
for all the hockey teams, volunteers, friends, fans and family that help make the event possible.
Mac’s Newcomers story continued
From the season
kick-off in late May, the
summer training camp
in late July, the Olympic
Hopes Competition at the
end of August and the
Austrian Hockey Tournament Board in Telfs, the
Austrian National team
has plenty of tournament
experience to bring to the
Mac’s Tournament.
“This trip with
lots of games in a few
days is a new experience. I’m glad we got the
chance to participate in
this tournament. This trip
will give players in their
development a big boost,”
said coach Werfring.
The team has
been in Alberta since Dec.
20th in anticipation for
their game against the
Calgary Buffaloes, which
they won on Dec. 26th
3-2.
U17 Belarus National
According to
their website, the U17
Belarus National Team
is equipped with the
best U17 athletes in the
country. Their two year
systematic training camp,
prepares the team for
high quality U18 junior
national team play.
U17 Belarus
National Team manager,
Klochkov Vladislav, said,
“It’s a great experience to
play in the Mac’s Tournament, and that it’s
important to come play in
Canada where the sport
was born. “If you want to
be a good hockey player
one day, you must be
here,” added Vladislav.
He emphasized
how important it is to a
player when they wear
their country’s colours on
their jersey. “It gives you
more power to represent
the country, represent
your relatives and represent your president,”
Vladislav added.
