YOUR COMMUNITY EVENTS
& ANNOUNCEMENTS
RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE!
Hello Midnapore and Sundance Community Members,
My name is Kiara Wagar and I am the current Facility Manager of the Mid-Sun Community Association. I
am new to Calgary and am new to the Mid-Sun “family”. Although, I have yet to be here for 2 full months
I have already witnessed the absolute excellence that
employees of the Mid-Sun Community Centre demonstrate. (I have to add as well that I have never received
such a warm welcome or felt as at- home as I do in the
Mid-Sun Community… a testament to this wonderful
neighborhood).
Here at the Mid-Sun Community Centre we have two
especially phenomenal employees that I would like to
recognize for their hard work and commitment to the
Mid-Sun Community Association and surrounding
community – Sue Hulme and Jennifer Burrows.
Sue Hulme is EXCELLENCE! Sue Hulme has been a
member of the Mid-Sun Community Centre staff since
1999. Throughout Sue’s 12 years of service she has participated in many avenues within the centre, such as
preschool, event programming, & recreation programming, but has always excelled as an out-of-school-care
child-care professional. Currently, Sue supervises the
before and after-school-care program at the Mid-Sun
Community Centre. Sue is the definition of commitment. She greets the children every morning, bright and
early, with a cheerful grin and open arms, and does the
same in the afternoon after the children have finished
their classes. Sue is warm, approachable, and 100%
4
non-judgemental with children and parents alike. Sue
adapts to the daily needs of the children and treats each
child as the individual they are, appreciating and encouraging their personal interests. Sue is engaging and
fun,and there is no question that if there is a fundraiser
held within the community Sue is a part of it. Sue leads
by example to instil the spirit of community within our
neighborhood.
Jennifer Burrows is EXCELLENCE! In January 2012, Jennifer Burrows celebrated her 10 year anniversary as a
staff member with the Mid-Sun Community Centre. During her 10 years of service, Jennifer has “worn many hats”
within the centre, from teaching preschool to organizing
kids-club to doing recreational programming and finally
to being an out-of-school-care child-care professional where she has found her true calling. Currently, Jennifer
heads the Midnapore Out-Of-School-Care Program. Jennifer is the perfect example of sweetness and is a joy to
be around. She is always smiling, regardless of the task
she is performing. She goes above and beyond what
is required of her putting in the extra effort and extra
time to make sure each child in her out-of-school-care
program is nurtured and allowed to express themselves
and their creativity. Just the other day a parent called the
centre to say that because of Jennifer her child, “Had the
BEST DAY OF THEIR LIFE”. Jennifer always has her out-ofschool-care children and the community’s best interests
at heart. This is abundantly clear through Jennifer’s constant caring actions and kind words.
On behalf of the Mid-Sun Community Association, I
would like to whole-heartedly thank Sue and Jennifer for
their many years of service to the Mid-Sun Community
Centre and for the many differences they’ve made in the
lives of youth within our community. THANK YOU!!!
Sincerely, Kiara Wagar

philosophy that all children will have a well supervised,
safe and secure environment which encourages the development of self-esteem, self-sufficiency, self-discipline
and cooperation. Our environment is set up with a variety
of centres that allow children to initiate, decide and follow
through on their choice of activity.
The staff at Mid-Sun Out of School Care are loving, knowledgeable and have a genuine interest in caring for children.
Together with the parents our goal is to provide a positive

GREETINGS FROM
MIDNAPORE LAKE
It’s hard to believe Spring is almost here, but sure
enough March 20 is right around the corner!
As you look for the signs of the season; leaf buds, returning birds, and the inevitable snow storm; you’ll probably
notice changes underway at Midnapore Lake. On April
1 construction will begin in earnest on the main building and gate house with a targeted completion date on
schedule with the original forecast of Fall 2012.
While it may look like little has happened over the winter months, a steady stream of administrative work has
been going on behind the scenes. The ground-breaking
has been pushed to April so necessary waste-water
management plans could be developed, and approved
for permitting.
With some of the rains Calgary’s experienced in recent
memory it was important to ensure the lake was protected from anything that could wash in from land; and
14
the surrounding community wasn’t threatened by excessive drainage from the new buildings.
The April start will also allow work to progress more
efficiently. The original work schedule was designed to
divide the project in two phases to minimize impact on
the rink during the winter months. Now the work can
proceed uninterrupted.
You will still be able to enjoy the great outdoor amenities during the construction, and access to facilities like
washrooms will be available.
Midnapore Lake will also be implementing a new smoking policy, asking members and guests to please make
use of designated smoking areas and ashtrays that will
distributed around the park.
If you have any questions, or would like to get more involved with the Midnapore Lake Residents’ Association you
can call (403) 256-0550, or email [email protected].
Please send any comments you may have to comments@

COMMUNITY GARDEN NEWS
NOTE: Earlier 2012 Registration for Mid-Sun Community
Garden Plots
Responding to requests for earlier access to register for
and plant Community Garden plots, we planned our
start-up for: Saturday, April 28, 2012.
This synchronizes with Earth Day events! Mark your
calendars and plan to come to register and join a startup work team after you register.
• Bring a hammer & electric drill to join the Tool Team
construction projects, your shovel and rake to join the
Soil or Mulch teams, or your garden gloves and weeding equipment to join the Landscape Clean-up team.
• The Community Garden needs additional volunteers
to take on small specific roles to help our garden thrive
and become more engaging for gardeners. Details and
sign-up sheets will be available at registration.
• Plan to sign up for ‘Volunteer Weeks’ – this practice has
worked well to maintain our common spaces in the
garden.
Watch for more details in the April newsletter.
Winter Sowing Demo and Community Garden
Committee Meeting – Feb. 4/12
Thanks to Lisa Klassen for providing a practical and informative demonstration with advice about selecting
seeds to start now in plastic milk bottles. Bottles were
shared and we left with much enthusiasm to try this out
to result in very hardy plants.
• Plans for revising the registration process and clarifying policies for gardeners
• Plans for Community Garden enhancement. For example:
• we now have a volunteer designer to create signage
for the Community Garden
• we have a volunteer photographer
• we plan to develop a new composting system
• we plan to launch a new initiative to expand partnerships and sponsorships to build resources for Community Garden projects.
Garden Start-Up Planning Meeting PLUS Composting Equipment and Methods Presentation
An expert guest speaker from the Calgary Horticultural Society will explain more effective composting
structures and methods to result in useful compost as
quickly as possible. We also have a list of other areas to
clarify and organize prior to our Registration Day.
Plan to come to this meeting to learn about composting, and to get involved in planning your Community
Garden experience. Your suggestions are most welcome
and will be highly valued!
March 10, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the Meeting Room
You can also submit your ideas and suggestions by
email to Mid-Sun Administration at facility.manager@
midsun.org who will then forward them on to the
Garden Committee. Thanks!
A very productive Community Garden meeting resulted in:
• A new liaison process with Mid-Sun Management to
provide communication to gardeners and with the
Mid-Sun Board of Directors.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR
RUNNERS AND RUNNING
PERFORMANCE
With more and more people taking up recreational
running, the number of running associated injuries
has also increased. Commonly reported cases include:
shin splints; patellofemoral pain syndromes; Achilles
tendinitis; flat feet; and compartmental syndromes and
stress fractures. All these injuries are a result of cumulative stress reactions to soft tissues and bones. While
running, the musculoskeletal system may absorb up to
250-300% of the runner’s weight on the heel strike, and
this exerts stress on the body.
Chiropractors are generally contracted to help alleviate
pain and non-specific symptoms associated with running, usually from the gradual onset of regular stress
on the soft tissues and bones. If these symptoms are
caught early, they can then be effectively managed and
reduced in a short period of time. Chiropractic treatment can help excessive pronation, the inward rolling
of the hind foot and the midfoot beyond the acceptable
parameters of general walking and running; prolonged
internal rotation of the internal extremity, the inward rotation of the femur, which transmits stress to the pelvic
region; and excessive supination, and those with very
high arches who are very sensitive to stress reactions
and fractures.
While chiropractic treatment can help with pain and
injuries, its biggest advantage to runners and athletes is preventive care. Many runners, athletes and
non-athletes may ask – why pay for chiropractic treat-
ment when there is no pain to treat? It’s much easier to
maintain good health and prevent injury than to treat
somebody already in pain. The danger with running injuries is that they are likely to be caused by repetitive stress
and alignment problems that take time to develop, and
an even longer time for the pain to start. If our bodies
were designed with perfect alignment, then we would
be able to cope with the regular stress running delivers.
However, very few of us do have perfect alignment, and
in many cases those with flat feet or high arches are at
risk to extra cumulative stress to the body.
In preventive cases, a chiropractor can give a good overall
evaluation, teaching the patient how to prevent injuries
and maintain good alignment – thereby reducing the
chance of injury. For those looking for preventive treatment, your chiropractor can help assess and evaluate
your condition by offering scans of your feet, testing for
strength imbalances and an analysis of your posture. In
addition, the chiropractor can also suggest a program
suited to your needs to prevent injury in the future.

BOOK
of
KELLS
The Book of Kells, one of Ireland’s most precious artefacts, is likely the most famous example of medieval
illumination and calligraphy in existence. This beautiful manuscript containing the Four Gospels is on
permanent display at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
It is probable that illumination began in the late 8th
century at an Irish monastery on the Scottish island
of Iona and after a Viking raid, the book was taken to
the monastery of Kells in County Meath, where it may
have been completed in the early 9th century by several calligraphers, not just one artist. Workmanship is
so fine, that some details can only be clearly seen with
a magnifying glass.

EXCELLENCE IN HOCKEY
Interview by Jaden Bagar
Originally from Edmonton, Greg McCallum, is currently
the President of Midnapore Hockey and has been volunteering with the association since his son, Josh, first
started playing Timbit hockey. Josh is now eight years
old and is in his second year playing Novice.
Through the years of volunteering with Midnapore
Hockey Association Greg has been in charge of organizing the Timbit Age Category, been the VP- On ice,
volunteered as a coach and is head of his sons novice
team. Last May he became the President of Midnapore
Hockey.
As Greg says “I became involved because over the years I
can look back and fondly remember the countless hours
my parents and the parents of my friends spent giving
back their time so that we can just go out and play – I
wanted to continue that.”
When asked “What are some of your obligations and duties that you are requested to perform while volunteering?” Greg answered “I see them as being very simple.
Whether it’s liaising with Hockey Calgary, working with
the Community and Business Leaders or having the
opportunity to speak with parents, I have one thing in
mind – I represent the voice of our players!”
“We are connecting with players differently and have
really focused our efforts as an association on the development of our players and of our coaches. It’s also
a time for us to stop and reflect on the efforts all of the
volunteers in our association (Board members, Coaches
and Managers, etc) and take great pride in the fact that
through the efforts of everyone, we are not only preparing our players to be better players rather we are preparing our players to be better people.” That is what the
mission statement – Excellence in Hockey, Excellence in
Community- means to President Greg McCallum!
As Greg also points out “This is a unique year for Midnapore Hockey Association not only because we enter
our 25th anniversary, we will also have the opportunity
to play at the premier facility in South Calgary (South
Fish Creek) once they open up the 3rd and 4th rink in
their facility.”
Greg started playing hockey when he was four years
old and has been playing ever since. Although originally from Edmonton, Greg moved to Calgary when he
was two years old and grew up in Braeside. Greg played
his minor hockey years in the community and eventually moved onto play for the SWAA Royals organization.
Greg finished up playing for their junior program just as
he was starting university.
Greg still plays hockey three times a week in a couple
of different men’s leagues including a standing Monday
night game with twenty or more coaches from Midnapore Hockey Association.
A big thank you for all the time and effort all the volunteers at Midnapore Hockey Association put in to make it
a great program for our community’s hockey stars!

Goal Setting:
Your Guide to Staying Motivated
by Amanda Hierath, LPN, PFT, FIS
Alright, the flash and excitement of the New Year has
passed and NOW is the perfect opportunity to shake up
poor eating habits, train for an athletic event or simply
charge up your daily energy.
So, how do you become motivated? The channel to obtaining your motivation is as easy as identifying your
short and/or long- term goals. So let’s get started but
more importantly, let’s be S.M.A.R.T. about it…pun intended!
SMART is an acronym to the “who, what, where, why’s
and how’s” of goal setting that give meaning to your
personal objectives.
S (Specific) -Whatever you goal, ask yourself why it is important to you at this point in time. Moreover, how you
are going to accomplish this goal with a detailed and
organized plan of attack.
M (Measurable) - What does success look and feel like
to you? How will you know when you’ve completed
each mini-goal or the ultimate goal? Perhaps it’s a particular feeling, a specific number, or setting target dates
may be the criteria for measuring progress.
A (Attainable) - It is necessary to expand your scope
of knowledge and adopt a new attitude. Fresh skills
will fuel your sense of commitment, and looking back
on past efforts may also give you insight on previously
failed attempts.
R (Realistic) - Setting short-term goals contributes to
the overall long-term plan. Ex: Increasing your run time
by 1 mile every week to run 10 miles in 3 months time.
Achieving smaller successes gives us a larger sense of
pride and more courage to continue on towards the
larger goal.
your day timer or blackberry, the dates and times of
goal-orientated priorities.
Determining how successful you will be is dependent
on your commitment and your ability to incorporate
the S.M.A.R.T strategy to goal setting. Winston Churchill
once said, “success is the ability to go from one failure
to another without the loss of enthusiasm”. Despite any
hiccups in the road, if you continue to be inspired by
your goal and do what it takes, you will accomplish anything you set your mind to.

ST CECILIA
Stewardship is about developing a “need to give”, rather
than “giving to a need”. At École St. Cecilia, the students
learn about stewardship and are inspired to give by taking part in the annual Helping Hands Project.
Throughout the month of February, the students were
motivated to perform acts of service as a way to earn
money for charity. Whether it was taking out the garbage, clearing the table, or shovelling their neighbour’s
driveway, the children tallied up their Helping Hands
earnings and submitted the funds at the end of the
project.
This year, the Mustard Seed’s Affordable Housing initiative was selected as the recipient organization, targeting the two pillars of École St. Cecilia’s Stewardship
program: Local Needs and Poverty. The Helping Hands
funds will contribute to a downtown building project with 225 suites which will provide affordable, safe,
and clean housing for many people who are currently
homeless – a valuable lesson in giving.

MARCH IS COMMUNITY
ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP
AWARENESS MONTH!
Did you know there are more than 20,000 volunteers in
the community association movement in Calgary? It’s
the LARGEST collective volunteer movement in the city!
There are also more than 156,000 Calgarians who are
members of their community association. Be part of it!
The Federation of Calgary Communities is proud to
once again promote March Community Association
Membership Awareness Month. We encourage you
to take a few minutes this month to find out what your
community association can do for you! It’s easy and
you’d be surprised at the many benefits and options
available to you as a neighbour.
Community associations are so much more than organizations offering programs and services such as youth
soccer or evening yoga to residents. For example, this
newsletter was created and produced by hard-working
volunteers from your community association! Each
month they put this together to let you know what
great things your community has to offer. Community
associations are the voice for community life; working
with City Council on planning and development issues
in Calgary. Do you want to take part in what goes on
in your neighbourhood? Have a say and get involved!
Many community associations also work closely with
many local businesses to offer discounts and benefits to
their members.
Throughout this month-long event The Federation of
Calgary Communities will be working closely with the
149 community associations in the city to promote the
many benefits of belonging. Each community association is different so find out what yours can do for you
today!
Engage. Belong. Inspire. Be part of it!

BEGGIN’
POOLS…. OR
YOUR PET’S
EYES
We all know in reality the most effective weapon your
pet has against you is not teeth or claws. It is that unblinking stare from those luminous eyes telling you
they are starving. Starving for dinner, an ear scratch,
pet, walk, car ride, or whatever that is you are currently
snacking on. We need to keep those two manipulative
tools healthy. Virtually every eye problem warrants at
least a physical examination, and many ocular conditions, a veterinarian cannot diagnose over the phone,
are emergencies. Eyes are fragile, and serious conditions can occur quickly, one problem leads to another,
and complications even with appropriate treatment are
common.
Some eye problems are more common in certain
breeds. Pugs and Persian cats develop skin conditions
in the deep grooves of the skin below their eyes. The
ducts which normally drain tears from their eyes don’t
operate effectively and this constant wetting of the skin
can cause nasty infections. Keep your pet’s face clean
around the eyes, eye wipes are now available not unlike
baby wipes. Chows and Sharpeis often need surgery to
correct turned in eyelids where the hair along the lids
contacts the cornea or clear part of the eye. This is called
entropion and can be very painful. These breeds need
‘face lifts’ to correct the problem and pull the eyelids
out. Ectropion or turned out loose lids like we see in
Bassets and Bloodhounds is the reverse condition and if
severe may also need correction. Irritation of the cornea
by hairs may be limited to several eyelashes misplaced

and growing inward to contact the corneas. This may be
corrected with permanent removal of these hairs.
Cataracts, dry eye, retinal atrophy, cancer, infection,
viruses…. The list goes on. Most veterinarians can examine your pet’s eyes and treat many conditions successfully. That examination should include an examination of the entire pet to make sure the eye problem is
not secondary to a systemic problem. Calgary has a few
veterinary ophthalmologists. These specialists are very
generous sharing their knowledge with your veterinarian to treat patients successfully and are available for
referral for more difficult cases. These doctors surgically
remove cataracts, and do virtually anything you would
expect of your own ophthalmologist. After all without
healthy eyes how else will we know that pet is desperate for love as they turn those beggin’ pools of light on
us.
Damage to the cornea or window of the eye is considered an emergency if an ulcer has formed or the cornea
has been lacerated. Self medicating the eye with ointments or solutions containing steroids can cause permanent damage to the eye or may even cause the globe
to rupture. Hairs, trauma, chemical irritants, bacterial infection, and foreign objects all can damage the cornea.
A Shih Tzu sleeping with his eyes partially open because
they bulge slightly could dry the center of the cornea
causing an ulcer.
All dogs can develop glaucoma or an increase in the
pressure inside the eye. This condition is an emergency
and prompt treatment is necessary to avoid permanent
blindness. Glaucoma tends to be very painful with the
white part of the eye or sclera becoming very bloodshot
and the cornea becoming a grayish color as fluids build
up. Several breeds of dogs are very prone to glaucoma.

BURNS AND SCALDS
Every month Alberta Health Services EMS responds to
emergencies where a young child has sustained severe
burns or scalds. These incidents often occur inside the
child’s own home. Common causes include a child accidentally tipping hot liquids onto themselves, touching a
hot surface, or making contact with an electrical outlet.
Fortunately, incidents such as these can be avoided by
taking simple preventative measures.
Degrees of burn
• 1: Affects only the top layers of the skin; appears red
like a sun burn; discomfort is generally tolerable.
• 2: Deeper and much more painful than 1°burns; broken skin or blisters commonly develop.
First Aid for burns
• Skin may continue to burn if not aggressively cooled.
Immediately douse burns with large amounts of cold
water.
• Cover the burn with a sterile dressing, or any clean,
non-fluffy material to protect from infection.
• Over the counter medications may be used for pain.
Adhere to directions given on the label.
• Seek further medical attention from your doctor as required.
Prevention of burns
• Check the temperature of your hot water tank. Many
homes keep hot water temperatures as high as 60°C /
140°F. This temperature will scald a child in just seconds.
• Use placemats instead of tablecloths. Tablecloths can
be yanked downward causing hot drinks or food to spill
on a child.
• Turn pot handles to the back of the stove and ensure
cords from kettles, slow cookers, and other electrical appliances cannot be reached.
• Avoid picking up a child while holding any hot liquids.
• Ensure electrical outlets are made secure by installing
commercially available safety devices that prohibit access.
If you require immediate medical attention for a burn,
call 9-1-1.

program offers seniors a 60% discount on adoption fees
when adopting a “senior” cat or dog (8 years or older).
Through the “Seniors for Seniors” program, our goal is
to help enrich the lives of both pets and people by sharing the benefits of adopting an older companion animal.
Not only does adoption give a deserving animal a much
needed home, the adopter can benefit from increased opportunities for exercise, socialization and companionship.
The love of a pet has also been linked to health benefits
such as lowering blood pressure, triglyceride levels and
cholesterol. A furry companion can also help to combat
loneliness.
When well taken care of, senior cats and dogs can be
a source of love and companionship for many years
to come. Older pets are great for first-time pet owners
or people who do not have the time or energy to deal
with frisky puppies or kittens. Most senior animals are
house-trained and likely have already received obedience training. In addition, when you adopt a senior cat
or dog, there are no surprises when it comes to his size
or personality, making it easier to know if the pet will be
a good fit in your home and for your lifestyle.
The 60% discount offered through the “Seniors for Seniors” program results in a cost of $60 to adopt a senior cat
and $80 to adopt a senior dog. The adoption fee includes
a vet check, vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, a microchip, a six-month City of Calgary licence and a bag of food.
Help us to connect the wonderful senior cats and dogs
at the Animal Services Centre with loving and caring forever homes! For more information about the “Seniors
for Seniors” program call 3-1-1 or visit calgary.ca/animalservices to view all of our adoptable cats and dogs.

Property Addressing
•All property addresses must be clearly visible from the
street.
•Property owners must ensure that addresses are clearly displayed at the back of the property if that property
is adjacent to an alley or public walkway.

•A well-displayed address greatly assists emergency
services such as Calgary Fire and Alberta Health Services – EMS.
•It also helps city operations such as Waste & Recycling
and Animal & Bylaw Services to provide services more
efficiently.
CALGARIANS TO CELEBRATE THEIR
HISTORIC HOMES THIS YEAR
Join the House Party of the Century!
Is your house 100 years old (or thereabouts) — built in
1914 or earlier? If so, it’s time to celebrate your home’s
place in Calgary’s history — and your role looking after it.
Calgary Century Homes is a citywide celebration commemorating homes constructed during Calgary’s first
building boom. Owners and residents are invited to
share details and stories about their house, particularly during Historic Calgary Week 2012, Friday, July 27,
through Monday, August 6. Participants will receive
a free kit to help them create a Century Homes yard
sign with historic photos and information such as stories of former residents, special events that happened
there, a description of the home’s style and original features. During the celebration they will hang a banner
to identify their home as a Century Home and display
their yard sign to the public. Throughout the year participants will receive information on how to research
their home’s history, including workshops. There will
be opportunities to share stories on a website and to
network with other residents and admirers of Century
Homes
The Calgary Century Homes project is headed by volunteers from a variety of partner organizations, including the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society (CHI), Calgary
Heritage Authority, City of Calgary Heritage Planning,
The Federation of Calgary Communities, Calgary Public
Library Community Heritage & Family History, and Hillhurst-Sunnyside and Cliff Bungalow-Mission Heritage
Committees. Other organizations are invited to join in.
Organizers are recruiting community coordinators to
sign up participants in their community, arrange a location in the community where blank yard signs and
banners can be picked up, and keep participants and

KNOW THE SIGNS OF
CHILD ARTHRITIS
Juvenile arthritis (JA) is one of the most common chronic
diseases among Canadian children and adolescents
under the age of 16. It significantly impacts a child’s
quality of life and, if left untreated, may result in irreversible joint damage and disability. But identifying JA can
be tricky; sometimes even very experienced physicians
miss it. Arthritis in children can take numerous forms and
its symptoms vary widely. Children with arthritis don’t
always complain of joint pain, which is why the disease
can be hard to detect. According to The Arthritis Society,
if your child experiences any of the following warning
signs for JA over a few weeks, you should consult your
family doctor:
• Pain and stiffness in the joints (for example: knees,
elbows, fingers)
• Warmth of joints
• Stiffness in the morning or after waking from naps
• Limping or difficulty using an arm or leg
• Fatigue or loss of interest in recreational activities
JA is defined as continuous inflammation of one or
more joints lasting at least six weeks for which no other
cause can be found. Experts tell us that an early diagnosis and aggressive treatment plan can control the
pain of arthritis and prevent damage to the joints. Once
diagnosed with arthritis, the child’s treatment plan—including medication and rehabilitation therapy—will be
determined by a doctor.

17th Annual President’s Dinner
The 17th Annual President’s Dinner, featuring guest
speaker Larry Day, will be held March 22. Larry’s presentation, entitled 10,000 Interviews, will recount his
experiences over 35 years as a journalist and filmmaker.
From child soldiers in Sierra Leone to prime ministers
and presidents, Larry has conducted more than 10,000
interviews—world leaders, actors, writers, directors,
musicians, activists, homicide detectives and murderers. Larry will talk about the art of the interview and
what it has taught him about life, teaching, communication, sales and achieving success.
Drama Production
Drama students at St. Mary’s University College present
their production of Museum, a comedy by Tina Howe.
Museum takes place on the final day of a group show of
three fictitious contemporary American artists being exhibited in a major museum of modern art. In the course
of the day some forty people walk through the show:
art lovers, skeptics, foreigners, students, lost souls, fellow artists, and of course, museum guards. The play is
about the movement and yearning of these people. The
production takes place on Friday, March 30 at 7:30 pm
and Saturday March 31 at 2:30 and 7:30 pm.

The egg is the universal symbol of Easter celebrations
throughout the world -- dyed, painted, adorned and
embellished with superb artistry.
The most famous decorated Easter eggs were made by
Peter Carl Faberge, who was commissioned by Russian
Czar, Alexander, to make a special Easter gift for his wife
in 1883.
The first Faberge egg was an egg within an egg. The
outside shell of platinum and white enamel opened to
reveal a smaller, gold egg. The smaller egg contained yet
another surprise, opening to display a golden chicken
and a jewelled replica of the Imperial crown.

Advice From Our
KITCHEN Experts
Coren Jones
Senior Design Consultant
Superior Cabinets
7 years of Design Expertise
What do you recommend regarding using the latest design trends when
planning a new kitchen?
Most elements in design have trends. When planning a new kitchen, determine which current
trends appeal to your design style and functional needs. Steer away from daring trends that are
not easy to change in a year or two, such as bold coloured countertop or cabinets. If you want to
make a statement, use a daring paint colour on your walls as this can be easily altered to adapt
to changing fashions. Kitchens are personal and unless you are thinking of selling your home
within a year or two, plan your kitchen to suite your taste, and your lifestyle and not necessarily
the latest trend. Get others’ opinions and use them as a guide for your own kitchen, but make
sure you include pieces of yourself in your decision. Look through magazines to get ideas. Gather
pictures and make a list of what you like. Sometimes a list of things you do not want can be
helpful to a Kitchen Designer as well. A Kitchen Designer can be a great help in your kitchen
planning process as they will guide you through the decision making stages and assist with the
details that can sometimes be overwhelming.
When I am meeting with a Kitchen Designer should I let them know what my budget is right
away?
Some are uncomfortable revealing their budget on the first visit because they feel their Designer
is also a sales person and may utilize the entire budget even though the kitchen may have been
designed more economically. Designers are bound by a code of ethics that guides them to work
within your budget instead of working to meet the budget. Your Designer will use the budget
constraint to provide the most efficient and viable solutions to your kitchen needs. If you are
unsure of what your budget is, your Designer can also help you through the budgeting process.
We will discuss your needs and wants and determine a final budget that you are comfortable
with. By providing a budget you are giving your Designer an added level of understanding of
your project which will help create the perfect kitchen for you.

I have always thought that caring for a cyclamen would
be difficult, but with proper care you can have one for
many years.
Watering: Cyclamen like humidity. Add a daily misting.
Stand the pot in a bowl of water until the soil is thoroughly moist, then let it drain and don’t water it again
for another week or so, until it is dry.
by Cindy DeJager
Light: Bright, indirect. Cyclamen do not like heat; and
temperatures above 20 degrees may induce your plant
to go dormant.
Feeding: Feed with a low nitrogen fertilizer every two
weeks.
I have just acquired my first Cyclamen – sometimes
called Persian Violet. These beautiful, delicate plants
are native to Europe and the Mediterranean region east
of Iran. They are adapted to the deciduous woodlands
and placing them in filtered light with morning or late
afternoon sun is ideal. The leaves are heart-shaped and
‘butterfly wing’ flowers emerge from the tuber in colors
of white, pink, or purple. At one time these plants were
endangered from over collection for the horticultural
trade, but proper education and propagation in nurseries has alleviated that threat.
Dormancy: The dormancy period for the cyclamen is
April – September. When the leaves begin to turn yellow start decreasing watering and feeding, and stop
completely when all the leaves are brown. Don’t pull off
any green leaves that may be left as these are how the
tuber stores its food for the rest period. Give your plant
a thorough watering now and if no green leaves appear
move it to a cool, dry place until fall again when you will
begin to see first signs of leave growth.

WRITE ON HOCKEY
by Lon Hofer
Is the Game Aligned?
Times have changed. Since the advent of the much improved professional hockey leagues, the big brute strength
and power of players is now less of a necessity, though
still an asset. For a modern hockey player, the secondary
components of physical fitness are of importance as well.
These components are tough to train, but have a big effect
on high level performance, especially with the push for a
faster, cleaner game. These secondary components being:
balance, coordination, agility, reaction time, speed, power,
and mental capacity. (The primary components being:
cardiovascular capacity, muscular capacity, flexibility, and
body composition.)
A Creed to Live By
Don’t undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others,
It is because we are different that each of us is special.
Don’t set your goals by what other people deem important,
Only you know what is best for you.
Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart.
Cling to that as you would your life, for without them life
is meaningless.
Don’t let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or
the future.
But this can lead to trouble as well. A player who is trained
top to bottom with full body vertical explosiveness and
power is dangerous, as it is promoting just that. Full kinetic
vertical explosion. Especially when the game is trying to
lower itself away from the head.
By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life.
Check out a certain Detroit hockey player. He is agile and
strong laterally. I feel that professional leagues need to rethink how these players are built (including equipment)
and re-align the players with the game they are trying to
build. Build a prototype, and suggest training regiments
that sync with the direction the game wants to go, especially if it actually gives you competitive advantage as a
player.
It is the fragile thread that binds us to each other.
Align fitness with the players, align the players with the
game, align the game with the rink.
In this case it might be locking the vertical power into the
lower body, while developing upper body lateral agility,
softening the equipment that is most commonly hitting
the head, and getting rid of seamless glass. Maybe even a
little less of the linesmen in the scrums too. That might help
develop some on-ice accountability.

Don’t give up when you still have something to give
Nothing is really over…until the moment you stop trying.
Don’t be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect,
Don’t be afraid to encounter risks,
It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible to find.
The quickest way to receive love is to give love.
The fastest way to lose love is to hold on too tightly,
And the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Don’t dismiss your dreams. To be without dreams is to be without hope.
To be without hope is to be without purpose.
Don’t run through life so fast that you forget where you’ve been,
But also know where you’re going.
Life is not a race, but a journey to be savoured every step of the way.

MOON CALENDAR
March 1, First Quarter (waxing)
Moonlight is strong, encouraging leaf growth. It is a good
time for planting, especially two days before the full moon.
Take cuttings from plants you wish to propagate. Fertilize as
close to the full moon as possible.
March 8, Full Moon (waning)
As the moon wanes, the energy is drawing down. Strong gravitational pull but moonlight is decreasing putting energy into
the roots.
March 14, Last Quarter (waning)
Decreased gravitational pull and moonlight. A resting period.
Take cuttings from plants you wish to propagate. Dry herbs,
flowers and fruit. If you want to control growth or encourage
rooting, perform the necessary activities during the waning
moon.
March 22, New Moon (Waxing)
Increasing moonlight, lunar gravity pulls water up encouraging plant growth and proliferation. Grafting, transplanting, repotting, and watering. Gather herbs used for essential oils. Oil
content is more concentrated at this time.

LABOUR AND LOVE:
CHOICES IN
PREGNANCY,
CHILDBIRTH
AND PARENTING
- Lisa Baker, B.Sc., B.Ed.
The Canadian Paediatric Society, Dieticians of Canada,
and Health Canada recommend that an infant be exclusively fed breast milk for the first six months of life
and continue to receive breast milk, along with complimentary foods, for the first two years and beyond. This
recommendation comes from consistent research that
shows breastfeeding has many nutritional, immunological, and emotional benefits for infants and toddlers.
Some of the benefits of breast milk include:
• It contains all the nutrients an infant needs for the first
six months of life
• It reduces infant illness such as ear, respiratory and
gastrointestinal infections
• It can increase a child’s IQ score
Mothers also receive many benefits from breastfeeding.
These benefits include:
• Greater postpartum weight loss
• Reduced risk of diabetes, breast cancer, and ovarian
cancer
• A free form of nutrition that is readily available any
time of day
The benefits of breastfeeding are so clear that almost
all women are encouraged to breastfeed, the exception
being women who have certain active infections (such
as HIV). Any known infections should be discussed with
your healthcare provider during pregnancy so that a
plan can be made for feeding your baby. To get more
up-to-date, evidence-based recommendations for feeding your infant, read the draft statement ‘Nutrition for
Healthy Term Infants: Recommendations from Birth to Six
Months’. The joint statement can be found on Health Canada’s website at http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/consult/
infant-nourrisson/recommendations/index-eng.php.

MLA CALGARY - SHAW
CINDY ADY

Serving Chaparral, Shawnessy, Silverado, Somerset,

It’s March and hopes turn to warmer weather around
the corner—more chances to get outside and get
active. Everyone has personal goals; for some it’s a
target weight or to reach a better running pace. For
others, winter meant being indoors all the time, and
now is a chance to get some fresh air and restart their
active living goals. In 2011 I helped launch the Active
Alberta Policy (tpr.alberta.ca/activealberta). This policy
was based on simple facts—research continues to tell
us that being inactive and not eating healthy both contribute to obesity and other health related problems.
Obesity and other health issues are on the rise. We need
a new approach to counteract this trend.
Summer of this year, we will be opening the new South
Calgary Hospital. This hospital will be unique as it has
plans to be a place for health AND wellness. This facility
is developing programs to combine acute/emergency
care with wellness and lifestyle programs. The goal is to
be a hospital that doesn’t just fix health issues, but also
looks at prevention and lifestyle improvement. In our
lives we need to increase the focus on wellness as well.
As we approach the one year anniversary of the Active
Alberta launch, I want to take this opportunity to once
again call for action. Every Albertan is responsible
for their health and wellness. Each of us faces choices
everyday regarding wellness.
the Prime Minister (you can view the letter on my website). It was about sodium in our diets and its link with
high blood pressure and other health conditions. His
suggestions were small steps such as making your own
meals, and eating less pre-packed foods. There are lots
of ways to make a change.
Activity, exercise and healthy eating are such an important part of my life. Whenever I have to skip exercise because of work or life commitments I feel like something
is missing. It’s become a part of my life that energizes
and refreshes me. I make little changes where I can, and
I notice a large difference because of it.
I will continue to post information on my website and
Facebook regarding healthy eating and activity information. As well, the Government of Alberta has many
great resources from recipes to activity planning at:
www.healthyalberta.com.
I hope you take this call to action and make those little
changes in your life. Don’t doubt the difference they
can make!
Election
As this newsletter goes to press, we are still waiting on
the official date for the Election. That said, it has been
an honour serving as your MLA this last term. I will
be running again in the upcoming election. I hope to
continue to serve and support the interests of CalgaryShaw. Thank you for your vision and efforts--what
makes Calgary-Shaw an amazing place to represent,
and an amazing place to live, is the people who live
here!
The steps to a better and healthier lifestyle don’t need
to be scary. Look at your lifestyle and think about simple
tweaks you can make. Park the car a little bit farther from
the store entrance, use the stairs instead of the elevator,
stand for ten minutes of every hour at your work desk,
replace soda with water, or pack your own lunches instead of grabbing fast food. Multiple studies show that
thirty minutes a day of activity makes a huge difference
(a great YouTube video by Dr. Mike Evans of the U of T
discusses this: http://youtu.be/aUaInS6HIGo).

cycle. Along with poplar tree plusses there are some minuses that we need to contend with. Lifting sidewalks,
foundations, roads and driveways; poplar fluff floating
through the air and drifting like snow against walls and
fences; clogged sewer lines etc.!
People have a love/hate relationship with poplars. But
regardless of how you personally feel about these titanic
trees – happy or saddened – many are coming to the end
of their lifecycle. A poplar tree has a lifecycle of approximately 50 years. Thejazzercise.com
poplars in Ward •14(800)FIT-IS-IT
were planted in
the 1950s, 60s and 70s so it’s not hard to do the math.
The loss of this entire poplar canopy will create an intense void for some beautiful sections of Calgary, not
to mention the devastating environmental impacts,
diminished quality of life for residents and massive financial burden should the trees need to be removed
and replanted all at the same time. For these reasons

Another piece of business I think is important to talk
about is the matter of setting Council wages! I believe
we all agree that Council should not be setting their
own wages. That said, previous Council got it right
when they chose to have an outside Council Compensation Review Committee. What I don’t think is correct
is the strategy to set Council pay according to the Average Weekly Earnings for Alberta (which includes all of
Alberta including the oil sands region and has resulted
