Supplies:
KIT INCLUDES:
Plastic mesh bookmark
Precut yarn
YOU WILL NEED:
Scissors
2 completed samples
Plastic needle
Instructions For Making Sample
Pattern A
1. Thread 1 strand of yarn through needle, allowing overlap
of 2˝.
2. Push needle up through first hole indicated on diagram
and pull through, leaving about 3˝ extending below
bottom edge for fringe.
3. Count three empty holes along length and push needle
down through third empty hole (yarn will span two empty
holes); pull tight.
4. Push needle up toward front through next hole.
5. Continue in this fashion to end of first row (9 stitches in
all). Tension of yarn should be uniformly tight.
6. To begin Row 2 push needle up through adjacent hole,
second row.
[Stop here to prepare bookmark for evaluation.]
7. Make stitches as in first row to end of row (9 stitches). Pull
needle off yarn.
8. With contrasting yarn, repeat steps 2-8 for Rows 3 and 4.
9. With yarn matching first row, repeat steps 2-8 for Rows 5
and 6.
10. Fringe ends by untwisting each strand.
(Note: diagram is shorter than actual bookmark.)

Pattern B
1. Thread needle; allow 2˝ overlap at needle.
2. Follow steps 1-9 as in Pattern A.
3. Rows 3 and 4 are worked simultaneously
on this Pattern. Begin Row 3 by pushing
needle up through first hole at bottom
edge, leaving 3" for fringe.
4. Push needle down through second hole in
Row 4 and pull tight. Stitch will cross
diagonally over plastic mesh grid.
5. Push needle back up through the third hole
in Row 4. Note that this stitch will appear
straight on back of bookmark.
6. Push needle down through the 4th hole of
Row 3, creating a diagonal stitch.
7. Push needle up through 5th hole in Row 3.
8. Continue to end, making 18 diagonal
stitches.
9. To finish Rows 3 and 4, push needle up
through the top hole in Row 4 and
continue forming cross-stitches to end of
rows. Remove needle.
10. With yarn matching Rows 1 and 2,
complete Rows 5 and 6 like 1 and 2.
11. Make fringe by untwisting strands.
(Note: diagram is shorter than actual
bookmark)
Time to completion: 5-10 minutes per
bookmark.

When To Use This Activity
The bargello bookmark provides a quick evaluation of a wide range of cognitive abilities. It is
especially suitable for persons who are bed-ridden or when a minimum number of supplies or
mess is desirable. Groups of more than 4 persons may require 2 persons to monitor and provide
assistance, and more samples are needed for such groups. It is a good one-handed activity if
therapist holds the bookmark or uses an adaptive holder.
Evaluation Set-Up
Prior to evaluation session, prepare each person’s kit by completing steps
1-6, pattern A. Leave needle attached to yarn as shown:
Individual
Seat person at table with all
supplies and sample within reach
(24˝).
Provide 3 strands of yarn, 1 strand matching yarn
already on bookmark and 2 of a contrasting color.
This is one more strand than is necessary to complete
the bookmark.
Group (to 6)
Seat person at table, each with a set of supplies as
described above. Groups of more than 4 may require
more samples. Groups of more than 6 may require
additional therapists for adequate supervision.

Therapist’s Instructions
Introduce activity: “This is a bookmark. It is made by stitching a design on the plastic mesh
with yarn. The design that is made is called bargello. All the supplies needed to complete the
bookmark are in front of you. In order for me to see how you are doing today, it is important
that you try to make your bookmark look as much like the sample as possible.”
Provide steps as indicated below as needed. Observe performance, provide appropriate
prompts or assistance, and rate behavior for each step (see rating criteria).
Pattern A
(Persons with known mode of 4.6 or below should be directed to this sample.)
Step 1: Stitching Row 2
(Demonstrate on a prepared bookmark.)
“Hold the bookmark so that the long stitches are on top/facing you. The first row is already in
place. You will be making the second row right next to it” (point to second row). “To do this,
count 3 empty holes and push the needle down through the third empty hole” (demonstrate
counting and pushing needle down.) “The stitch should look just like the one next to it. Now
bring the needle up through the very next hole. Repeat to do the second stitch. Now you may
begin.”
Observe performance, provide appropriate prompts or assistance and rate behavior (see
rating criteria).
Step 2: Stitching Row 3
(Provide directions after ascertaining that the person cannot figure out how to begin Row 3 on
his own or with a prompt to look at sample, or by using trial and error, or if person refuses to
attempt this step.)
“Pick out a contrasting yarn and thread it on your needle.” (Demonstrate, prompt, assist as
needed.)
“Push your needle up through the hole next to where you finished your last stitch. Pull it
until you leave the same length on the end as the other rows.” (Demonstrate.)
“Now count three empty holes and push your needle down. Continue as you did before.”
Step 3: Stitching Row 4
(Provide directions after ascertaining that the person cannot figure out how to begin Row 4 with
a prompt to look at the sample, or by using trial and error, or if person refuses to attempt this
step.)
“Push your needle up through the next hole on the end. Now count 3 holes and push your
needle down so that you make a stitch like the one you just finished.” (Demonstrate.)

Step 4: Stitching Row 5
(Repeat the directions for Step 2 after ascertaining that the person cannot remember how to
begin Row 5 with a prompt to refer to sample, or by using trial and error, or if person refuses to
attempt this step.)
Step 5: Stitching Row 6
(Repeat directions for Step 3 as necessary.)
Step 6: Fringe
(Provide direction for persons who cannot figure out fringing after prompt to consult sample.)
“Untwist each strand of yarn like this.” (Demonstrate untwisting and separating yarn.)
Pattern B
(Persons with known mode of 4.8 or better should be directed to copy sample B. Some persons
at 4.6 may request to copy this sample but will require much assistance to complete it.)
Step 1: Stitching Row 2
Give directions same as Pattern A.
Step 2: Stitching Rows 3 and 4
(Provide the following directions after ascertaining that the person cannot figure out correct
stitch by consulting sample or using trial and error. Note that back and front should be the same
as sample.)
“You will be doing both Rows 3 and 4 at the same time. Push the needle up through the first
hole in the next row and leave enough yarn to match the fringe ends. Now cross up and over to
Row 4 and push the needle down. This will make a short diagonal stitch. Come back up to the
very next hole in Row 4. Then cross over to Row 3 and go down. Come back up in Row 3.”
(Demonstrate and show difference in front and back.)
Step 3: Stitching Rows 5 and 6
(Provide direction only if needed.) “Make these rows like the first two rows.”
Step 4: Fringing
(Provide direction only if needed as in Step 7 of Pattern A.)

Critical Observations
Bargello provides an excellent view of sequencing actions and learning. Awareness of the
following sensory cues is observable:
stitch length
stitch direction
stitch tension
yarn color
row/relationship of rows to color yarn
front and back of bookmark
untwisted yarn (fringe)
Other important observations include:
starting to work without instruction
consulting sample (frequency/purpose)
moving on to next step/asking for next step
ability to recall directions
ability to consider 2 rows simultaneously (B)
