In your second and third year, you’ll round out your residency experience through full immersion in the Baraboo community. • Strong maternity care training, from prenatal to postnatal, taught by family physicians in an unopposed setting with a supportive consulting OB/GYN from Madison. In 2013, Baraboo was named the 4th Best Small Town to Visit in the United States by Smithsonian Magazine. The town’s many turn-of-the century homes, built on hillsides, are reminiscent of New England. St. Clare hospital is situated atop a hill offering a breathtaking view of the ancient, majestic bluffs which wrap around Devil’s Lake. Downtown Baraboo, referred to as “the square,” offers several specialty stores, gift shops, restaurants and art galleries. The square is also home to summer concerts and farmer’s markets. Dean Clinic – Medical Associates Baraboo is the ambulatory training site of the Baraboo Family Medicine RTT. The faculty consists of 12 Family Medicine physicians, 5 of whom are graduates of the Baraboo RTT. In addition to family medicine physicians, the site is home to a pediatrician, internal medicine physicians, and mid-level primary care providers. The surrounding area offers many points of interest and recreation, including: • Devil’s Lake State Park, which features cross-country skiing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, camping, rock climbing, hiking and biking Dean Clinic – Baraboo Primary Care, clinic site for Baraboo residents • Devil’s Head and Cascade Mountain downhill ski areas • The world-renowned Circus World Museum, home of the Ringling Brothers Medical Student Rotations • International Crane Foundation Medical students interested in a future career in rural family practice should consider participating in a four-week rotation at the Baraboo RTT. Dr. Megan Hoel (2016 graduate) on the Family Medicine Service • Emergency medicine rotations offer experiences with all levels of emergency care—from routine lacerations to life-threatening trauma, stroke and cardiac arrest. • During the maternity care experience, you’ll work with a team of obstetricians who are passionate about teaching and offer many hands-on experiences in general, high risk, and operative obstetrics. • Our program offers a geriatric assessment clinic led by a certified geriatrician. You’ll be part of an interdisciplinary team that assesses the geriatric patient, identifies their medical and social needs, and works closely with families and community agencies to carry out treatment plans. • You’ll work with internal medicine subspecialists, general internists, and family physicians to learn how to care for patients on the medicine floor and in the intensive care units. These rotations offer varied learning experiences including palliative and end-of-life care. • Our faculty clinical social worker helps residents identify, treat and/or refer patients with human behavior and mental health issues. You’ll also acquire behavioral health skills from structured inpatient and outpatient experiences. • Scheduling flexibility allows for residents to arrange international and away electives. Residents have recently pursued such rotations in special interest areas including Obstetrics in Haiti and Prolotherapy in Honduras. The UW DFMCH is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, and has one of the largest, most dynamic research programs in the country. As a result of the merger between the AOA and the ACGME, the AOA will stop accrediting GME programs as of July 1st 2020, and the ACGME will assume oversight for all graduate medical education in the US after this date. In preparation for this, the ACGME has created the Osteopathic Recognition pathway to continue to train osteopathic resident physicians in Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) under the auspices of the ACGME. As national leaders in graduate medical education in Osteopathic Family Practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, we made the decision that all of our sponsored and affiliated programs would apply for Osteopathic Recognition. In November of 2015, we received approval as part of the inaugural group of family medicine programs in the US to receive this added accreditation. We believe this clearly shows our dedication to providing some of the highest quality osteopathic medical education in the country. Curriculum Highlights Osteopathic faculty and residents from all of our statewide locations come together four times per academic year for skillbuilding conferences that expand their knowledge and abilities in OPP. Additionally, each site provides ample training and opportunities for residents to incorporate OMT into their clinical practice. The program boasts a 100% first-time pass rate on the osteopathic family medicine board exams. For osteopathic residents, membership is also paid for the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) and the Wisconsin Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (WAOPS). Life Support Courses Depending on the program, fees may be covered for the following life support courses: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); ACLS re-certification; Pediatric Life Support (PALS); Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP); Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS); and Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO). Professional Development Funds are provided to attend conferences, purchase medical books, journals and educational software, and reimburse other approved professional development expenses. Each resident will receive $750 in each of the PGY 1, 2, and 3 training years. Board Exam Fees Board eligible PGY-3 residents are required to take the ABFM exam in the spring of their 3rd year as a condition of employment. The base fee will be covered by the DFMCH. In addition, osteopathic residents in the Statewide Osteopathic program will be required to take the AOBFP exam in the spring of their 3rd year and the base fee for the exam is covered by the osteopathic program. Paid Time Away Personal Days Residents receive paid time away for personal use such as vacation, illness or injury, and job interviews. First-year residents receive 15 days, and second- and third-year receive 20 days. Holidays As scheduling for patient care coverage permits, paid holidays are: New Year’s Day Martin Luther King Day* Memorial Day Independence Day Labor Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Eve Day* Christmas Day New Year’s Eve Day* *Floating holiday time may be granted in place of these days when the residency clinic is open, subject to patient care needs and local program policy. Professional Development Second- and third-year residents may take five additional paid days to attend professional conferences and other professional development activities. Life Support Courses Paid time away is provided for participation in the following life support courses: ACLS, ACLS recertification, NRP, PALS, ATLS, and ALSO. Leave of Absences It is recognized that residents may occasionally need to be away for longer periods of time for parental leave, medical conditions, or other personal/family matters. Leaves of absence are arranged in collaboration with the local program director. Residents are eligible for up to one month of paid leave in certain circumstances. A second month of paid leave may be available at the discretion of the program director. There is full compliance with Family and Medical Leave Act guidelines, permitting up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. 1 Insurance and Retirement Group Health Insurance Several comprehensive health care plans are available for residents and their eligible dependents, domestic partners, and eligible adult children. Dental Insurance Dental coverage is available for residents and their eligible dependents, domestic partners, and eligible adult children. Residents may select from basic coverage to a more comprehensive plan. Vision Care Insurance Vision care insurance is available for residents and their eligible dependents, domestic partners, and eligible adult children. Residents may select from basic to more extensive coverage. Group Life Insurance Residents may select group life insurance: either individual coverage for themselves, or coverage that includes their spouse/domestic partner and eligible dependents. Long-Term Disability Insurance Long-term disability is provided for all residents. This provides a monthly benefit in the event of a covered disability. AD&D Insurance Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance (AD&D) provides a benefit in the event of accidental loss of life, sight, or limb, subject to guidelines of the policy. Residents may select individual coverage, or coverage to include their spouse/domestic partner and eligible dependents. Malpractice Insurance All residents are provided medical malpractice/professional liability benefits by their employer. Pre-Tax Benefits Residents may elect to pay for certain expenses from pre-tax, rather than after tax income, as authorized by the federal Internal Revenue Code – enrollment in these programs reduces taxable income. Programs include: Pre-tax medical expense reimbursement account for income allocated for approved out-ofpocket health care costs. Pre-tax dependent day care reimbursement account for income allocated for qualified day care costs for dependents Retirement Plan Residents may choose to enroll and contribute to an employer-administered retirement plan. Resident contributions are 100% vested. Additional Benefits Resident Salary Residents are provided an annual salary consistent with resident salaries provided at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics. The salaries for July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017 are $56,459 for PG-1, $58,546 for PG-2, and $60,721 for PG-3. Resident Support Resident support and social activities with peers are essential components of each UW DFMCH residency program. These vary by program, and may include retreats, dinners, parties, resident support groups, and more. Additionally, all residents are offered and have direct access for individual confidential support and counseling from their employing organization for work-related and personal issues. Meals Meals may be provided at no charge for residents during local program conferences, and while on hospital call or hospital services. Pagers Pagers and associated monthly fees are provided at no cost to residents. Research Assistance Residents may apply for small grant funding from the UW DFMCH. Additionally, research staff and principal investigators are available for guidance and assistance for residents interested in research.
