And as always, this is our opportunity to come together as a Chapter, recognize our accomplishments and review the past year’s challenges and successes. The following is an outline of the event format as well as a few new items for this year: • Built and Unbuilt Work can be submitted • The “People’s Choice” Category will not be part of the Awards Program this year. • A new, Young Architect’s Submission Category has been added in the Optional Presentation Board Display. Interns and Architects with ten years or less experience in the profession are invited to submit a presentation board of a project or projects on which they were involved (may include student work and level of responsibility should be noted on the boards for each project). • Reduce entry fees again this year: $100 for Chapter Members; $250 for non-members. • Improved website navigation to simplify viewing projects on-line. • Optional Presentation Boards in the lobby of McIntyre Hall for each entry to display a 24 x 36 presentation board during the reception and dessert portion of the evening. Boards should include your firm name, project information, contractor, etc. This was a great success last year and we hope all will participate again. • Jurors for consideration will be professionals who have an understanding and appreciation for the regional context of our work. • Jurors will be introduced by our Master of Ceremonies. These introductions will be limited to five minutes for each juror. The jurors will not show their own work. • Submittals will be introduced by the Master of Ceremonies with one slide image. The introduction will include the name of the architect, the name of the project, location, client (if available) and the general contractor. No jury comments will be solicited for this portion of the program. Slides may be montages or single photos. • Winning projects will be announced after all the projects have been introduced. The jury will comment on the merits of the projects. Winners will receive their awards on stage and have the opportunity to say a few words. • Reception with appetizers and no-host bar will be available before the program along with a champagne toast and dessert following with time to network, view displays and discuss projects. We are eagerly looking forward to this year’s awards event – our 20th!. It will be a chance for us to demonstrate that there is much to celebrate and anticipate as we recover from this recession. We hope you will be motivated to submit your hard work and join us as we focus on our future, our passion for creativity and our ability to move forward with optimism. Let’s CELEBRATE! Sincerely Yours, Julie Blazek, AIA, Design Awards Committee Chair NWAIA 3 City of Bellingham Encourages Sustainable Design Neil McCarthy, AIA Back in March, the City of Bellingham along with Sustainable Connections announced a new seven month pilot program called the “Bin Bump Up” program. The goal is to encourage and support certified green building projects with a Green Project Review Team and to reduce building permit review time. As stated in their press release: “The City is committed to promoting sustainability by supporting projects that conserve resources and minimize impact on the environment. This pilot promotes green building projects by providing incentives at the permitting stage,” said Jim Tinner, City Building Official. The pilot program - known internally as the “Bin-Bump-Up” program - will decrease standard permit review time-lines for eligible projects by one “bump-up.” For example, a project that typically would be eligible for 28-day review will be “bumped-up” to a sevenday review, if it meets all applicable requirements, Tinner said. He said these projects also will be eligible to schedule one “integrated design” meeting with the City’s new Green Project Review Team, to identify potential code conflicts between the project’s concepts and City building codes. These incentives will be offered for new buildings and residences that achieve either a Building Industry Association of Whatcom County (BIA) Built Green 4- or 5-star standard or a U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Gold or Platinum standard. Project registration with the BIA or the USGBC is necessary to be eligible and third party verification will be required at the time of project completion to ensure that the project was built to the eligibility threshold. Other equivalent green programs may be eligible, as determined by the City’s Planning Director or Building Official. The pilot will conclude on October 31. Tinner said City officials will use the experience gained through the pilot project to create permanent policies to encourage green building, and added that this is the first of several 2010 initiatives aimed to increase conservation, energy efficiency and green building. This week Sustainable Connections announced an event scheduled for August 31st celebrating the first project completed using this program. The event is an open house from 4:30-6:30 at a house constructed by local builder, John Nelson. The house is located at 2200 King Street. Here at RMC Architects, we have also able to benefit from the program. Just last week the City issued five building permits on a project that we are doing for the Bellingham Housing Authority. Our experience was definitely encouraging and the City lived up to its promises to process these permits in record time. • Thank you to our NWAIA 2010 Golf Tournament Sponsors Major Sponsors Hoffman Construction Tiger Construction GeoEngineers/Ram Construction Schell Design Group Hole In One Sponsor Ritter Project Management Tee Box and Prizes Opsis Architecture K - Engineers NAC Architecture Foster Pepper Joe Entrikin Applied Digital Imaging RGN King Works Freeland & Associates Materials Testing & Consulting Bellingham Automotive Dawson Construction Geotest Services Bellingham Automotive Associated General Contractors Wilson Engineering Shuksan Golf Roger Jobs Motors Chrysallis Inn Pickford Theatre Dirty Dans Semihamoo Bob’s Burgers & Brew DVDT Compass Rose B & B 4 NWAIA NWAIA 2010 Architectural Scholarship Award Recipients The AIA Northwest Washington Chapter Scholarship is funded by interest received from an endowment that was created by donations collected over a two-year period. Infinite Space, a new documentary feature film, traces the lifelong quest of visionary genius John Lautner to create “architecture that has no beginning and no end.” It is the story of brilliance and of a complicated life – and the most sensual architecture of the 20th century. Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio Thursday, November 4th, 7 pm Whatcom Museum of History & Art Rotunda Room FREE! Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio is a documentary film on the late architect Samuel Mockbee and the radical educational design/build program known as the Rural Studio that he co-founded deep in poverty-stricken Hale County, Alabama. Mockbee was a celebrated architect, artist and educator who instilled his passion and philosophy in those he believed will become a new generation of citizen architects. Snakebit is a rich, probing film that shows how a group of young architects empowered by Mockbees belief in making the world a better place use their ingenuity and compassion to provide housing for people who their profession all too often overlooks. It is opportunities like this that provide both free continuing education credits and the ability to share information with other AIA members that are important during these challenging economic times. I’d also like to thank Puget Sound Energy for hosting the presentation and our Board meeting in their Burlington LEED facility. While several of us struggled with finding a way there due to the closure of the railroad crossing, it was an entertaining and educational experience for those that did make it. For those that tried to find an alternative direction to the facility and eventually gave up, I wish to apologize for not finding out about the closure and notifying you ahead of time. In July, the Chapter also moved forward with awarding two student scholarships. As of this writing (August 19, 2010), we are well on our way to another successful golf tournament that includes four major sponsors, a hole-in-one sponsor, and 25 tee box and prize sponsors. In addition, we have over 62 golfers signed up to play with more expected to register on the day of the tournament. Since this is one of the major annual fund raisers for the chapter, I’d like to offer a big thank you to all of the sponsors, players, Board members, golf committee members, and others who make it a success. For most of us, Fall means the end of summer vacations, having our children go back to school, the World Series, football, and the peak of the political season. This year’s elections will be critical to our profession as the State grapples with another year of deficits. Regardless of your position on issues, or your affiliation with a particular party, I encourage you to get involved. If you have been involved, I encourage you to stay involved. The more legislators know us and know about the business of architecture the better off we will be as they face the difficult choices ahead. Lastly, I’d like to send out a friendly reminder to members, like me, who have yet to complete their continuing education units for the year. The next four months will fly by, so you might consider getting all of the remaining credits you need by attending this October’s 2010 Northwest and Pacific Region Annual Conference in Eugene, Oregon on Oct. 13-16. If you would like to attend the Board’s September meeting, it will be at 4:00 on September 9 at HKP Architects office in Mount Vernon, WA. If you can not make it and would like something brought before the Board, please email me at [email protected]. • Till next time, Rick NWAIA AIA CONTACTS NWAIA CHAPTER OFFICERS President: Rick Benner, AIA • 650-3550 President Elect: Julie Blazek, AIA LEED AP 336-2155 Treasurer: Neil McCarthy, AIA • 676-7733 Secretary: Ed Simpson, AIA • 650-3551 NWAIA BOARD MEMBERS Past President: Eric Anderson, AIA • 629-3441 Mike Smith, FAIA • 734-4744 Sarah Brown, Asso.
