FUN FLY June 12th, 2016 Dayton Wingmasters Flying Field Food, Flying and Friends what more could you ask for. John and Jeanette will be the CD’s of this event (This is not their normal customer appreciation fun fly, they have something bigger and better in the works for later in the year that will be held in the store) Plan on coming out for a fun filled day of flying with friends and family. Starts at: 12:00 PM Wingmasters Flying Field TAILSPINS Page 1 From the Presidents Hanger I want to thank Mr. & Mrs Charles P. Kinney for their generous donation to the Dayton Wingmasters, he ran into our Safety Director who must have been wearing some Wingmasters apparel at Krogers. Well, they talked briefly and the next day I get a phone call and he states he has a few things he would like to donate to the club. He showed up at the May meeting and he had more than a few things, he donated a brand new Apprentice airplane, a brand new Eflite T-34, a new Spectrum Dxi Transmitter and several boxes of other airplane related items. I was shocked to say the least when we were carrying the items into the building. The planes and transmitter and most of the other equipment will be used in the trainer program. We had our first official warm weather Fun Fly on Memorial Day, a big thanks to Larry Masters and Paul Stimmel who did an excellent job acting as CD’s for the event. The weather was perfect, the food was great and we had a large crowd show up who seemed to have had a wonderful time not only flying, eating and socializing during the day. We have several fun flys planned for the month of June the first will be on June 12th, and the CD’s for the event will be John and Jeanette Nagle. Now this will not be their usual Customer Appreciation Fun Fly like they have been doing for many years, this will be like a normal Wingmasters Fun Fly with them acting as the CD of the event. The second will be on June 26th and we have 2 members that are checking their schedules to see if they can CD the event. The June 26th fun fly will be more geared towards the flying and fun more than on the food like most fun fly's in the past have been. There will be a small landing fee that will be given back to the participants in the way of contest prizes and raffles. There will be drinks and snacks on hand for the members to enjoy while they are either flying or just spectating. There will be some kind of contest during the day for the enjoyment of everyone. Just a little over a month away on July 9th, 2016 will will host the first annual Warbirds over Dayton Fun Fly. Andy Anderson and Jack Book will be the CD’s for the event and they joined us at the board meeting and both have some great ideas on what to do to make this turn into a great event. As always, help will be needed in pulling off a successful event so if you would like to lend a hand get with Andy (or Gus) or Jack and let them know. With the flying season getting into full swing one of the most important aspects of our sport is the safety part. For the most part everyone does a great job but remember during these events you may not be able to get away with some of the things you can if your at the field alone. With that being said, I would like point out one of the things I have been observing and that's people not standing in the the flight stations. This does two things: one, it lets other people know someone is in the air and second, and most important it can keep you from getting hit with an airplane from an errant landing or a snap on the take off. Over the few years I have been flying I have seen that plastic keep people from getting seriously hurt from just those types of events. I just witnessed an event where one pilot had to jump out of the way when an errant take off sent a large plane into his station and he ended up crashing himself. Lets all fly safe and try and leave the same way we arrived. A motion and first reading was made for a change in the CLUB BY LAWS concerning ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS AND PRIVILEGES, SAFETY AND RESPONSIBILITY. A discussion followed on the wording. The Amendments may be voted on at our June meeting. Chuck Kinney donated several items including two planes to the club. Thank you Chuck for your generosity. Treasurer Report : Congratulations to Mike Duggan for his First Place finish in Sportsman at the 16th Annual Columbus IMAC Challenge http://www.wingmasters.org TAILSPINS Page 3 Notes from the Safety Director June 2016 As the flying season is in full swing, I will repeat my recommendations: check your models for fit and function; check the batteries both in the transmitter and model; be aware of your surroundings, pay attention to what you are doing; show respect for the propellers/rotors and fly safe. While I was at the field last Sunday I noticed that we have a potential hay field growing in the outer perimeters. It is my understanding that the city is not going to mow as often – so tall grass is going to be with us. The smaller models can get lost in the field. Locating beacons for some of the quadcopters may be a good idea. A few years back, it was somewhat common for the mufflers to fall off the models while in the air. More times than wanted, the pilot watched the muffler falling (so it could be located/found) and in the meantime the airplane crashed. My point is – if after you do all you can to control the model and it ends up in the deep grass – before wandering off after it, recommend you make a reference point from the assumed models location from our flag pole and a distance point (unique marker/distinct tree) past the model to aid in finding it. If the model end up in a tree, be extremely careful trying the retrieve it. My wife does not allow me on a ladder anymore, so I will need help to get a tree’d model. If in doubt request help, and if it looks difficult seek a professional. Enough of the negative, fly safe and I will see you at the field.
