DIANE PERNET A SHADED VIEW ON FASHION FILM "Launched in 2008, ASVOFF has almost single-handedly encouraged an industry to reconsider the way it presents itself in film." Metro UK Monday, 19 November 2012 In a mesmerizing cinematic experience incorporating over a hundred films from around the globe, Diane Pernet celebrated the fifth anniversary of her festival A Shaded View On Fashion Film (ASVOFF) over the weekend of November 9 - 11th. An eclectic programme kept audiences spellbound with new and vintage film screenings, intimate celebrity appearances from the likes of Rossy de Palma and Daphne Guinness, presentations by industry experts, exclusive live music and dance performances. Nine filmmakers walked away with glittering trophies for their fashion films, which were awarded prizes over the three-day event held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. ASVOFF's Grand Prize, awarded by MK2, went to Jessica Mitrani for her film 'Heapieces for Peace' in collaboration with designers Three As Four. A full list of the winning films -- each between 30 seconds to 5 minutes long -- can be found at the end of this press release. Jury member Emanuel Levy & Jury President, ORLAN Internationally-acclaimed artist ORLAN, who was this year's jury president, had the following to say on opening night: “There is nothing like ASVOFF. The diversity and quality of ASVOFF's program, its jury and guests make it so that there's no equivalent. With a festival like ASVOFF shaping it, the future of fashion film is very bright," she said. “I discovered the creative liberty of using an iPhone to make the videos I'm showing here tonight ,” said celebrated photographer & filmmaker Dominique Issermann, whose eight clips were created for the release of Leonard Cohen's new album entitled 'Old Ideas' . “Naturally each clip focused on a woman as the subject of a particular image but it was Diane who filtered this out as a fashion liaison set to Leonard's musical poetry.” In a quest to explore the themes of fashion, style and beauty through the medium of the moving image, ASVOFF founder Diane Pernet is often credited with pioneering and nurturing the fashion film genre, pushing its boundaries forward, matchmaking creative collaborators and presenting commercial opportunities for talent across both industries. This year was no different, with several young and seasoned directors recognising Pernet’s role and ASVOFF’s encouragement. Grand Prix Winner Jessica Mitrani & Diane Pernet, Festival Founder An esteemed panel of film critics, actors, producers, directors, fashion designers, musicians, journalists, photographers and entertainment industry veterans made up the ASVOFF 5 jury, who are all leading and influential figures at: The Film Society of Lincoln Center; television channel Arte and film distributor MK2; and media outlets like Style.com and Obsession. The renowned Hollywood film critic and prolific author, Emanuel Levy, who has served on the jury of over 40 international film festivals including Cannes, Venice, Sundance, Rome, Montreal, San Francisco, Taormina and Shanghai, was also the ASVOFF 5 jury (complete list of the jury is located at the end of the press release). This year's edition of ASVOFF made a special tribute to fashion and film industry legends such as designer Claude Montana and director William Klein, whose appearances on stage brought the house down before each introduced feature and documentary films of their choosing. An exclusive screening of designer documentaries rounded out the programme including Rad Hourani's portrait of Viviane Fauny and Olivier Nicklaus's film 'Fashion! Golden Eighties' starring Thierry Mugler, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Claude Montana and Azzedine Alaia. Highlights included the multi-talented electronic music maestro Bardi Johannsoson and a scintillating live set by the traffic-stopping French chanteuse Anne Pigalle at Club Silencio. Back at the Centre Pompidou, the irrepressible Rossy de Palma created a hypnotic display wearing a gown of flowers designed by floral designer Jérémy Martin set to a moving musical score played by the composer/cellist Alexander Zekke. Each visionary figure presented his all-time favourite 'fashion film moments' in art, music and cinema. Glenn Adamson, Head of Research at London's Victoria & Albert Museum rounded up his favourite moments in video art -- from Yoko Ono and Rudi Gernreich to Michael Clarke, Leigh Bowery and Matthew Barney. The renowned musician Philippe Cohen Solal aka Gotan Project selected music videos from the likes of David Bowie, Talking Heads and Jack White while Claude Montana handpicked scenes starring incontestable icons of the silver screen: Marlene Dietrich, Gloria Swanson, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis and Audrey Hepburn. The F5 Series will inspire soon-to-be-revealed creations which will travel with ASVOFF 5 as the festival tours the world around a host of venerable institutions and events in the coming year. Diane Pernet is a world-renowned fashion critic and video journalist based in Paris. Previously a photographer and fashion designer, she now acts as documentary filmmaker, talent scout and fashion blogger on her site, A SHADED VIEW ON FASHION (www.asvof.com), which since its inception in 2005 has become a ‘must-read’ in fashion and creative industry circles. Pernet was recognised in 2008 for being a pioneer in digital media when she was chosen as one of three influential global bloggers to take part in a panel celebrating a seminal fashion exhibition at New York’s venerated Metropolitan Museum of Art. As one of the most recognisable faces in fashion, she has also been captured on the other side of the movie camera through cameo appearances in Robert Altman’s film, ‘Prêt-à-Porter’ and in Roman Polanski’s ‘The Ninth Gate’. While contributing to some of the most highly-acclaimed fashion magazines and pioneering online media, Pernet launched ASVOFF in 2008. As the founder of the world’s first film festival dedicated to fashion, style and beauty, she is widely considered to have incubated the ‘fashion film’ from its infancy to the popular genre that it is becoming today. Pernet is not only credited with providing the first platform of its kind for the ‘fashion film’ genre to evolve and flourish, but also with helping ‘fashion film’ fulfil many of its early promises which were to revolutionize the fashion industry, breathe life into static photography, offer a new outlet to filmmakers – and to trigger several important commercial, business and digital media opportunities across the fashion and movie industries.
