Athletics Carnival a Success Despite the Weather!
MOSMAN HIGH FLYER JUNE 2012 A school community fostering creativity individuality and leadership while striving for excellence in teaching and learning. Athletics Carnival a Success Despite the Weather! FROM THE PRINCIPAL - SUSAN WYATT The final carnival for 2012 was the Athletics Carnival held at Narrabeen Institute of Sport and while the weather (particularly in the morning) was a mixture of bursts of sun followed by showers, the afternoon was dry and greatly enjoyed. Students turned out in force and there was keen competition for all events. Only the high jump and the javelin were postponed due to the wet grounds. A slightly different program was trialed on the day. Years 7 to 11 attended the carnival and Year 12 had the opportunity to work on major projects or performances for the HSC. As you know at Mosman many of our Year 12 students select subjects with a performance or project and in fact many choose multiple projects so this day working with their teachers was highly valued. The success of this alternative approach was due to the participation and commitment of our wonderful parents. The initiative began this year at the swimming carnival and expanded with the cross country carnival and continued to expand at the athletics carnival. Parents were judges on the track and worked with teachers in field events. Their contribution was highly valued by staff and students. This involvement by parents in all aspects of sport is instigated by the P&C sports committee lead by Debbie Lotz and Jane Dampney and on behalf of the Continued on page 2 June 2012 P&C Meeting Contents 21st Century Education From the Deputy Principals - page 3 Drama Committee Report - page 3 P & C Report - page 4 Fighting the Black Dog - page 4 Year 8 Big Day Out - Field of Mars page 5 Student Stars - page 5 Year 8 Visit Taronga Zoo - page 6 Athletics Carnival - page 7 Cross Country - page 8 Geography Competition Results page 9 Year 7 Charity Committee - page 9 Year 10 Geography Excursion - page 9 Performing Arts Report - page 10 English Report - page 11 Calendar of Events - page 12 Presented by Jess Melkman Thursday 14 June 2012 7.30pm In the School Library JUNE 2012 VOLUME 22 ISSUE 4 1 MOSMAN HIGH FLYER JUNE 2012 continued from page 1 Mosman community I thank them for the significant difference their leadership is making to all aspects of sport at our school. Speaking of success, a number of our students have achieved recognition at the highest level. Antoine King of Year 12 has been selected into the NSW Institute of Sport for sailing. Nick Burton represented Northern Sydney Region at the state rugby championships in Dubbo and was chosen in the CHS rugby team, Lenke Dauda-Board will be representing Australia at water polo in New Zealand. Charlie Fuller and Kian Lotz trained with the Milan soccer club in Italy and Jordan Cooper won a gold medal in the Australian Taekwondo championships held in Queensland just to mention some recent highlights. The wonderful talent of students in drama, music and dance will be showcased at the upcoming concert to be held on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st June. Music students are engaging in increased practice with the upcoming tour to Tamworth. A three day tour which will involve visiting a number of high schools in the Tamworth region and participating in workshops as well as performances. Already the P&C music committee under the leadership of Sarah Kernaghan is planning an overseas tour for 2013 to Italy and Austria. This parent committee is a force majeure in the support of music at Mosman High School not only supporting tours but also workshops, concerts, festivals and much more. The relatively newly formed drama committee with Gisela Moser at the helm also has made an enormous difference in supporting the Performing Arts department at our school and we all look forward to the Moscars later in the year. Another exciting initiative has been put in place by a group of twenty Year 11 students. I am sure you will remember the 19 Year 12 students who went to Cambodia last year instead of doing the more traditional “schoolies”. They built houses for families in Phnom Penh and worked with children in a local orphanage. Well twenty of our Year 11 students hope to carry on the tradition. They have held their first meeting and already established a website through the Tabitha Foundation where donations can be made to this worthy cause. It was wonderful to hear Claudia Snell and Astrid Milne who initiated the tour last year speak about their experiences and how valuable the experience has been to them. Of course Astrid and Claudia were acknowledged by Mosman Council at the Australia Day awards as Young Citizens of the Year. Year 7 on their Orienteering component for Sport 2 It was also wonderful to see so many parents attending the recent parent teacher evenings for Year 12 and then Year 7. The feedback was extremely positive and the teaching staff welcomed the opportunity to discuss the learning needs with parents. Years 8 and 9 will soon be receiving their reports and their parent teacher evening will take place in the last week of term. Two of our staff Ms Longley and Ms Melkman recently conducted workshops for teachers in Northern Sydney Region at the Gifted and Talented conference. Their presentation showcased the cross-curricular topic developed at Mosman High for Year 7 which focused on the question “What kind of Wild Thing are you?” The presentation was so successful and valued that they were asked to present for secondary and tertiary educators at the University of Sydney. They will be presenting at the upcoming P&C meeting and I encourage you to come along and hear about the innovative and creative programs our students are engaging in. Finally thank you to all families who have responded to my recent letter and paid school contributions. Your support of our school is greatly valued. MOSMAN HIGH FLYER JUNE 2012 From the Deputy Principals - Colette Longley and John Perdriau It’s Report Time! How to Help your child Be a Good Self Manager Having read a large number of reports it is apparent that good time management skills can support student achievement. Time is the one thing that we all have the same amount of, but it’s amazing how we run out of it and are ‘Time Poor.’ For students it is avoidable but requires support in achieving a consistent learning focus. Students will be given feedback about ignoring group distractions, prioritising and goal setting providing the intrinsic motivation to achieve. To avoid being a time waster, students have to develop consistent attitudes and habits to manage their learning. Keep a log of time usage during the week. The areas to include might be: - Day to day routines - Travelling to and from school, chilling out with friends before and after school - Part time jobs ( definitely no more than 14 hours per week); jobs at home; looking after brothers and sisters - Recreation - Family events; socialising and developing positive relationships The students have been given a wonderful resource, their planner, to help them with practical tips and resources for improving time management. Check out page 36. The above family activity, plus looking at ”Musts and Options” (page 181) will give a full picture of how time is spent. I encourage parents to sit down with their child and discuss the time wasters. Have a discussion with your child’s teachers about strategies for prioritising (page 32), goal setting (pages 161-2; pages 8-9), avoiding procrastination (page 92) and building time managing habits. Build your child’s self awareness and encourage them to be a better self manager. We started the year off by hearing from the 2011 HSC kids who spent their “schoolies” in Cambodia building homes for the Tabitha Foundation in Phnom Penh. They told us about the personal satisfaction and development they’ve enjoyed through their experience in Cambodia and were truly impressive. Last month we heard from SRC leaders – Tim Snailham and Savannah Wilkie who told us about MHS SRC – how it works, what they do and more about volunteering generally. The committee groups are going strong with the Sports Committee working hard to build the profile of sport both in and out of school . The market day was a great success and in July the MHS ski team of 10 will head down to Perisher to compete in the Interschool Ski Competition. Music has a mountain of events – Tamworth tour in June not to mention the very exciting trip to Italy and Austria in 2013. Drama will run the Moscars. If you are not receiving your PIN notices please contact Tina Jackson [email protected] so she can ensure you are on your year group’s list. We warmly welcome everyone to our next meeting which will be one week early 14 June (due to concerts on 20 and 21 June ) 7.30pm in the Library. Jess Melkman will be presenting from a recent university conference. Learn about 21st century education and how social networking can encourage conversation in the classroom Jess Melkman will be explaining how she engages our kids with Edmodo and collaboration. In collaboration, students are working together for a common goal. But what is that goal? How can this be used for meaningful assessment? Collaboration provides students with diverse learning environments and enriching experiences that build personal relationships, provide challenges and work towards a common goal. Traditional assessment focuses on teacher-guided tasks with a 'one size fits all' assessment task at the end. Group work develops more student centred learning where the teacher facilitates, but the student is involved in the decision making process. Later in the year the P&C plan to bring 2009 Young Australian of the Year winner (for his inspirational work with youth in Australia and abroad). – Sam Cawthorn to speak to both students and the wider community…. Stay tuned for dates. We hope you will join us in the Library Thrusday 14 June 7.30pm. Fighting the Black Dog FROM Joshua Derbe 7 Yellow On the 30 May, a group in academic extension class, 7Y, recently organised a sports day for the whole of Year 7. Their hopes were to raise money for the Black Dog Institute, for exercise your mood week. This charity supports people with depression, with their motto, “Because everyone deserves peace of mind”. Depression affects one in five Australians, and by 2030 will be the number one cause of disability. Exercise is a great way to “lift your mood”, and relieve some symptoms of depression. Donations were collected before the students departed for Rawson Oval. Students Alexander McIntosh, Joshua Derbe, Thomas Walker, Zara Whiston, Laura Marshall, Tom Burgess, and Ricardo Giorgi were referees for the three sports taking place, and the minds behind the event. These activities included basketball, soccer, and netball. Their plans were for each group (made up of two classes), to participate in two of the sports. Unfortunately, time was cut short and there was only enough time for one. Despite this, the day was a huge success, and a large amount of money was raised. The students also held a healthy food stall on Friday 1June. Things such as homemade lemonade, popcorn, rock cookies, sandwiches (chicken and egg), and cupcakes made by the kind students in Food Technology were all sold. By the end of lunch, almost all of the food was sold. They raised $365 to help the cause. Congratulations to them, and if you haven’t already, I urge you to head to the Black Dog Institutes website, and possibly get into some activities yourself! http://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/ 4 MOSMAN HIGH FLYER JUNE 2012 Year 8 Big Day Out - Field of Mars Year 8 applying their mathematical skills! Jordan's final bout was against a 22 year old competitor. Sparring 3 rounds Jordan came out the winner, scoring 15 points to 3 and secured the Open's Gold medal of colour belts (below black belt level). Jordan is working toward the Nationals at Homebush in June. Congratulations to Doria Katos who has achieved her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Nick Burton was selected into CHS Rugby. Lenke Dauda-Board made the water polo all stars team and will compete in NZ shortly. Antoine King has been selected as an elite athlete in the 2012 NSW Institute of Sport Sailing Squad. MOSMAN HIGH FLYER JUNE 2012 English Report FROM Peter Papilos, Debating and ICAS Coordinator Debating 2012 has been an exciting and rigorous year for Debating at Mosman High! Our two teams of highly enthusiastic students have each learnt about the complexities and excitement of formalised debates and argument. Naturally, the knowledge and skills they have developed in Debating have had flow-on effects into the rest of their education. The two teams... Mosman Blue Team (Year 9) Mosman Red Team (Year 10) Isobel Kemp Olivia Eastwood Sarah Clark Isabella Hunt Jack Versace Sophia Hatzis Ruby Craddock Serae Kopra ...have each stood up against Hornsby Girls High (and in one case, each other) to deliver strong, coherent and meaningful argument, and while they have endured narrow defeat, they have also had glowing wins – especially one debate where Mosman High’s illustrious Year 10 Team fought valiantly with some hard core rebuttal. Nonetheless, in all my experience of being a debater myself, an adjudicator and coordinating and coaching debating, over the last 15 years – I can state unequivocally – that the Year 10 Debate, which we won, against Hornsby Girls was the greatest debate I have ever witnessed – I did not envy the task of the adjudicator, who, was almost literally shaking in his boots as to how he was going to announce the result. At this point: * Mosman Year 9 have won and lost against Hornsby Girls * Mosman Year 10 have lost and won against Hornsby Girls * Mosman Year 9 will verse Mosman Year 10 and *There may be a need to have a showdown with Hornsby to decide who will advance to the next stage! I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank the eight debaters for their sterling efforts, hard work and enthusiasm – in particular, our new debaters who, on first experience won against a selective school. These students should be acknowl- 11 edged for their skill and determination. I look forward to coordinating and coaching Debating again next year and taking new and current students through the 2013 competition. These students have had a lot of fun meeting new students, debating on topical issues and learning the value of teamwork, listening and collaborating as well as being resilient in the face of strong opposition, all worthy lessons which contribute to and add value to life-long learning. The students meet at D16 during lunch on a Tuesday, for live discussion around such topics as: Education, Media, Politics and the ways in which these issues affect us in our daily lives. As the Debating Coordinator I would like to encourage all students to participate in this extra-curricular activity and even if you don’t get to debate this year, you may learn about debating and be really enthused to take it up next year! * A reminder that the Spelling and Writing Tests are on Tuesday the 19 June – in the hall MOSMAN HIGH FLYER JUNE 2012 CALENDAR OF EVENTS Monday 11 June Queen’s Birthday Holiday Tuesday 12 June Music trip to Tamworth Day 1 Wednesday 13 June Music trip to Tamworth Day 2 Y 12 English Ext assessment Thursday 14 June Music trip to Tamworth Day 3 Y12 Business Studies student lectures Y11/12 Drama excursion to Sydney Theatre Company P & C meeting 7.30pm in library Friday 15 June Y12 Visual Art mock exam Monday 18 June Y12 Business Studies assessment Tuesday 19 June ICAS Spelling & Writing test Wednesday 20 June Y11/12 Drama Excursion The Removalist Yamaha Band Contest Y12 Economics assessment Jubilation Concert 7pm in school hall Thursday 21 June Y12 Italian Trial Speaking exam Y12 Legal Studies assessment Jubilation Concert 7pm in school hall Friday 22 June Y7 Vaccinations Dose 2 Y12 Society & Culture lecture day ESL assessment Friday 20 July Y11 ESL assessment Monday 25 June Y12 English Advanced assessment Monday 23 July Y7 Maths assessment task over 3 days Y11 Hospitality work placements all week Tuesday 26 June Y12 English Ext 2 draft due Y10 English assessment Y8/9 Parent Teacher Night 4pm to 7pm in school hall Monday 30 July Y12 HSC Trials commence for 2 weeks Education Week Y8 Maths assessment Y10 Maths assessment Thursday 28 June Last day of term for students High Flyer deadline Tuesday 31 July ICAS English tests Friday 29 June Staff Development Day Wednesday 1 August ArtsNorth Secondary Music Festival Thursday 2 August Australian Maths Competition Monday 16 July Students return Tuesday 17 July Y11 English Advanced assessment Y11 Reports issued Y10 Reports issued Friday 3 August High Flyer deadline Wednesday 18 July Arts North Music Festival rehearsal Thursday 19 July Y11 ESL assessment Y10/11 Parent Teacher Night 4pm to 7pm in the school hall NEXT “HIGH FLYER” DEADLINE Friday 28 June 2012 email [email protected] Dates are correct at time of printing and may be subject to change.
