November 26 - Orara High School
Monday 26 November, 2012 Issue 19, Week 8, Term 4 Joyce Street Coffs Harbour NSW 2450 / PO Box 911 / T 02 66521077 / F 02 6651 3842 E orara‐[email protected] / W www.orara‐h.schools.nsw.edu.au “EWE” SHOULD CHECK OUT THE NEW
ADDITIONS TO THE AG FARM!
The Ag Farm has several new additions which
will make the farm an area of increasing interest. We recently purchased six Dorper
ewes (female sheep) and are looking to buy a
ram shortly. This will mean that we will be
able to embark on our own breeding program
which will be overseen by the AP group.
The ewes and their lambs have unusual markings having black heads and white bodies.
People instantly fall in love with the lambs
because of this unusual colouring. These
sheep are used for their meat only, as the
wool does not need to be shorn. Instead they
are self shedding which means the wool falls
off by itself. Dorper’s originated in South Africa and are particularly suited to the Australian climate.
While our Ambassadors sat around the council
bench in the councilors very own chairs with
their own personal computer screens, Sharon
talked us through the various proposals for a
greener, more attractive, pedestrian friendly,
accessible and entertaining city centre.
We wish to thank Sharon for giving her time
and a very interesting and informative presentation. It was an invaluable opportunity for
our students to understand the town planning
process, share their views and make some input to this important project for the future of
our city.
Our next and possibly last event for the year,
weather permitting, will be an exploration by
bike around the Coffs Creek cycle path.
Dave Wood
Here is hoping we find a ram shortly as that
will mean that we will have even more additions to our small flock. You are welcome to
have a look but check with Terry or myself
before-hand.
In other news the chickens are growing well
and we have sold several batches already this
term as well as supplying eggs to a number of
staff.
The corn crop planted by the Special Unit students and also the AP class is coming along
nicely and should be ready just in time for
Christmas.
Young Ambassadors check out the
CHCC future CBD concept plan.
On Tuesday 20 November, the Young Ambassadors were hosted by Coffs Harbour City Council Special Projects Manager and Town Planner, Sharon Smith at the Council Chambers.

From the Principal
HSC Formal
Congratulations to Mrs Julie Cross and her
Year 12 students on what was a wonderful
evening. It was so nice to see so many students, parents and teachers enjoying each
other’s company and enthusiastically planning
for the future.
On behalf of the Orara High School staff, I
wish our HSC cohort of 2012 all the very best
for the future.

Presentation Day
This will be held on Monday 17 December
commencing at 11:30am at Sportz Central.
Our guest speaker is Lee Fletcher who was
School Captain in 2006. All parents and carers,
particularly those of students receiving awards
are most welcome.
Don’t forget that our Newsletter is also available at the school’s website (http://www.orara
-h.schools.nsw.edu.au)
Regards
School Uniform
Frank Stanton
As mentioned in the last Newsletter, the
Principal
school uniform review is complete. I also mentioned in the previous Newsletter that the uniform would be mandatory for Years 7, 10 and
11 in 2013. Having discussed this issue with
staff and P&C, we feel it best to implement
the new uniform as follows:
 The senior uniform for Years 10 to 12 to be
phased in during 2013 and compulsory for
2014.
 Pending availability, a decision will be
made shortly regarding the junior uniform
for Years 7 to 9. Although the new uniform
will definitely phased in for Years 8 and 9
in 2013, information will be provided to
parents and carers of current Year 6 students at Orientation Day and through letters to parents.
Alternate School Development Day (SDD)
Orara High School teachers will be attending
an alternate SDD on Saturday 8 December.
This will be held in lieu of our Development
Day on Friday 21 December.
End of the School Year
Our Orientation Day for Year 6 students will
be held on Thursday 6 December, commencing
at 9am in the school’s sheltered area.
Mr Rodgers is organising a Year 10 Function to
be held at the Deep Sea Fishing Club on Tuesday 11 December. This will be an invitation
only event for students who have displayed
excellent school citizenship throughout the
year.

Solar Fridges are so cool!
As part of our work on the solar system, students in the Support Unit constructed a solar
oven and a solar fridge.
The best part was being on the beach to
make a solar fridge. Each student dug a hole
about the size of a shoe box. A drink or piece
of fruit was put in the hole. Students then
wet a piece of hessian (kindly donated by the
Arts Department) to place over the hole. It
was secured with a rock on each corner. It
was important to keep the hessian wet. That
was easy as there is no shortage of seawater.

Hosting is Fun! Become a
WEP Family!
Bring a piece of the world into your home by
becoming a volunteer host family to an exchange student from Italy, Canada, Finland or
Brazil in January.
Visit New Places – Revisit Old Favourites!
Hosting a student encourages families to see
Australia through the eyes of an exchange
student. Invite a motivated teenage student
into your home for a semester or year and
gain a new family member and friend for life.
Become a WEP Host Family – It’s Easy!
Simply submit your host family application
and choose your student. Before you know it
you’ll be communicating with your new family
member while everything else is organised by
WEP!
We learned that droplets of water fall into
the hole and push the
hot air up and out of
the hole. Hot air always rises so the fridges worked really well.

Support Unit
OSSA DAY—YEAR 7
Year 7 will take part in an Ocean Surf Safety
Award (OSSA) Day on December 6.
Theory for this course is being done in class
and the practical component will be completed at Park Beach under the governance of
CHCC lifeguards.
This qualification is the minimum required for
students to be able to participate in surfing
during sport on Wednesdays. Further information will follow regarding costs and arrangements.

From the PDHPE Faculty
With the onset of summer could you
please encourage your child to bring a
hat and water bottle along with
their sports uniform on PE days.
It is a good habit for students to always have a water bottle with them
every day as the health benefits of remaining hydrated are paramount.
