GEM TYPE AMO-B OFFSET MARKER
GEM GRAVURE COMPANY, INC. Parts and Assembly Manual GEM TYPE AMO-B OFFSET MARKER 1 Wire Identification Systems and Inks 2 GEM TYPE AMO-B OFFSET PRINTER Instruction Sheets The Gem Type AMO-B Offset Printer transmits a printed legend to insulated cables by contact with a rubber faced print transfer roll. The inked legend is transferred to this rubber roll by contact with a flat faced engraved steel print wheel which revolves in a bath of ink. The excess of ink is wiped off the print wheel face by a flat poly wiper material. Both the engraved steel print wheel and rubber face ink transfer roll are driven by cable contact. The Gem Type AMO-B Printer has been designed to mark wire, cable or pipe up to 3-inches in diameter at operational speeds. The machine accommodates standard marking wheels which utilize flat surface photo-engraved for striping, numbering or lettering. As delivered, the machine is set up and ready for use with the marking wheels ordered. For high-speed drying and clean, sharp impressions, it is essential that Gem inks be used. Gem formulates and processes a full line of inks for marking wire and cable for all insulations. Properly maintained and cleaned, the Gem Type AMO-B Marker can be expected to provide years of dependable service. Locate the marking machine between two water troughs in the extruding line. The first trough should be of relatively short length (CF. Note 1). Also, it should be equipped with a portable sponge weir (or dam) and should have one or more air-wipes at the outgoing end. The second trough should be of standard length. Note 1: The length of water in the first trough should be shortened by use of sponge dam to the point where, as the hot insulated wire emerges from the cooling water, the surface of the wire is covered with beads of water. Under this condition the air wipers drive off the remaining water from the surface most effectively. Adjust the height of the machine so that the wire-run passes between the transfer roll and the lower guide wheel. Under operating tension the wire should just clear the transfer roll. It should be necessary to crank down the guide wheel, applying a slight pressure, in order to bring the wire in contact with the printing surface of the transfer roll. Center the marker so that the wire is directly over the inked legend on the transfer roll. Once the guide wheel is lowered to apply pressure on the wire, slight centering adjustments can be made by loosening the shaft-housing lock screws on the back of the machine and sliding either the top or middle shafts in or out. Set up 1. Using the two top hand wheels, crank the top and middle wheel shafts apart. On the top wheel shaft, mount the appropriate cable guide roll (See listing). On the middle wheel shaft, mount the rubber faced ink transfer roll. On the bottom wheel shaft, mount the flat faced engraved steel print wheel. 2. Insert fresh flat poly wipe (1-1/2” x 1/2” x 1/8”) into the slot of the brass wiper holder. Mount wiper holder on the holder pin and position slide plate so that the wiper fingers fits around the print wheel, and the bottom sharp edge of the poly wipe contacts the wheel face on an angle, approximately 15”. Engage the coil tension spring on to the split ring fastened to the bottom of the wiper holder. Crank and adjust the wiper tension assembly to provide a small amount of drag on the print wheel face when it is rotated by hand. 3 3. Proper wiping is essential, since the insulated wire must be clean and dry for good printing. It is not necessary to exert considerable tension on the wiper. If positioning is correct, and if the wiper edge is sharp and clean, wiping will be accomplished easily and with minimum tension. Excessive wiping tensions wear out wipers quickly. Further, the added top pressure required to make the wire overcome the added drag on the marking wheel causes splayed or blurred printing and shortens the life of the etched printing surface. Fill the inkwell only to a point where the ink covers approximately 1/2” of the bottom of the marking wheel. This is sufficient to provide a puddle of ink under the wiping edge of the wiper holder. Excessive filling will result in ink being splashed over the wire and the equipment. Ink cans should be thoroughly shaken before use each day. When not in use, cans should be capped. Ink viscosities vary according to application but, for most purposes, the ink should approximate the consistency of light coffee cream. 4. Check whether wiper tension adjustment is proper to wipe the face of the print wheels clean. Once this is determined, using the rear top crank, position the rubber face ink transfer roll so that it just contacts the print wheel, and so that a clear print is transferred to the rubber roll. 5. Finally, center the cable to be marked between the top cable guide roll and the rubber face ink transfer roll that is now carrying the inked print legend. Using the front top handwheel, bring the cable guide roll down forcing the cable to slightly contact the rubber face ink transfer roll. Start the cable line slowly and check the print appearance on the cable after it passes through the marker. (It may be necessary to make small adjustments to the wheel contacts, guide contact, and wiper tension adjustment to obtain best results.) Once the print is satisfactory, bring up the cable line speed. GEM TYPE AMO-B OFFSET PRINTER Suitable for Continuos Operations or Short Lengths To Change Print Wheel 1. Release contact of top cable guide to cable. 2. Release contact of rubber face ink transfer roll to print wheel. 3. Remove inkwell and position under print wheel to allow ink to drip back into inkwell. 4. Loosen wiper tension and remove wiper holder and clean. 5. Remove print wheel and clean. 6. Using cleaner solvent, clean face or rubber transfer roll. 7. Mount new print wheel and wiper holder inkwell and reposition rubber face ink transfer roll to contact print wheel as described before. 8. Follow steps given in Set up instruction. THE GEM TYPE AMO-B OFFSET PRINTER transmits a perfectly defined legend or code to hardened or irregular contoured products through contact with a rubber-faced transfer roll in conjunction with its exclusive ROTOGRAVURED steel print wheel as it revolves through a bath of liquid ink. This gives the capability of rapid code and color changes. ROTOGRAVURED print wheels can be specifically ordered for all types of legends, codes, and logos and fast drying liquid inks are available in all colors of all types of products. THE GEM TYPE AMO-B OFFEST PRINTER is rugged, compact, and simple to operate and maintain. Maintenance 1. At end of each days run, clean the print wheel, rubber face roll, wiper holder, etc. 2. Before starting up on new run - shake ink can thoroughly, then check ink viscosity to see if it is similar to that when fist received. (It may be necessary at times to add a slight amount of thinner to the ink to achieve the desired viscosity). Reposition or replace flat poly wipe in the wiper holder so that a clean, sharp wipe edge will contact the print wheel when in position. 4 GEM TYPE AMO-B OFFSET PRINTER PROCEDURE TO REVERSE MARKER DIRECTION 1. Remove wiper holder. 2. Remove slide plate assembly to opposite side of machine. Make sure that the wiper support pin is in the same relative position in order to keep the proper angle between the wiper holder and the marking wheel. 3. Remove the two 10-32 x 3/8 flathead screws that fasten the wiper tension assembly to the base casting. Turn the wiper tension assembly around, reversing position. Insert screws and fasten to the opposite side of the base casting. 4. Replace wiper holder on the side with the re-positioned slide plate and wiper tension assemblies. 5. Change all shaft direction. It is necessary to provide the proper thread direction to keep roll nuts from loosening when marker is running. 6. If machine is equipped with a solvent dripper, remove and install on the opposite side. The marker is now ready to operate in the reverse direction. 5 GEM TYPE AMO-B OFFSET MARKER 6 Ref.
