Elyria, OH 44035 Every year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration compiles data on crashes that occur on U.S. roads and highways. Time of Day and Day of Week: Alcohol related deaths are more likely at night: The rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes was four times higher at night than during the day. Alcohol related deaths are more likely on the weekends: In 2008, 15% of all drivers involved in fatal crashes during the week were alcohol-impaired, compared to 32% on weekends. Children: Children get killed by drunk drivers: In 2008, a total of 1,347 children age 14 and younger were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes. Of this total 46% were occupants of a vehicle with a driver who had a BAC level of .08 or higher and 16% occurred in alcoholimpaired-driving crashes. Every year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration compiles data on crashes that occur on U.S. roads and highways. Speeding under the influence: Speeding related crashes generally involve alcohol: In 2007, 40% of drivers with a BAC of .08 or higher involved in fatal crashes were speeding, compared with only 15% of drivers who were not under the influence of alcohol. Lorain County injury and fatal crash count: 1/3rd of Lorain County crashes in 2009 were alcohol related. In Lorain County in 2009, there were 18 total crashes with 23 people killed. Of those 18 crashes 4 have been confirmed as DUI related, with 2 cases pending test results. Enjoy Your Holiday Season! Be responsible and do not drink and drive! Motorcycles: Motorcycle riders who drive under the influence generally do not wear helmets: The reported helmet use rate for motorcycle riders with BAC levels .08 or higher killed in traffic crashes was 46%, compared with 66% for those with no alcohol. Remove from heat and add one 12 oz. can evaporated milk and 1 tablespoon almond extract. Cool. (Mixture will fill 1 quart jar). When ready to serve, combine 1-1/3 cups milk mixture with one 2-liter of Squirt in a large punch bowl. Add a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream and top with the other bottle of Squirt. All ingredients should be very cold. 1 The Happy Elf Mixed by: Lorain County Board of Developmental Disabilities – Early Intervention Program Ingredients: 4 Oz. white grape juice 8 Green grapes 2 Drops green food coloring 4 Oz. lime-flavored sparkling water Lime or raspberry sherbet (optional) Directions: Freeze green grapes. Pour grape juice into blender. Add frozen grapes. Add 2 drops green food coloring. Blend for 15 seconds. Add sparkling water and garnish with scoop of sherbet. 2 galactic punch Mixed by: Oberlin Police Department Ingredients: 12 Oz. frozen orange juice 2 Cans (46 oz) red fruit punch 1 Can (46 oz) unsweetened pineapple juice 1 Bottle (48 oz) cranberry juice 1 (2 Liter) ginger ale 4-1/2 Cups water Directions: Combine thawed orange juice and water. Mix well. Stir in fruit punch, pineapple juice and cranberry juice. Freeze in a large container. Remove from freezer 3/ 1-2 hours before serving, stirring occasionally while mixture thaws. Stir in ginger ale just before serving. Yields 21/4 gallons. 3 Student Senate Super Sweet Sangria Mixed by: Lorain County Community College Student Senate Ingredients: Orange juice Grape juice Sprite /Sierra Mist Lemons Oranges Limes Directions: Combine orange juice, grape juice, and Sprite/Sierra Mist into giant container/ punch bowl. Slice fruit thinly and place inside. Use twice as much Sprite/Sierra Mist as you do juice. Enjoy! 4 Creamy Bubble Boboa Mixed by: Lorain County Community College Multicultural Club Ingredients: Club soda Tapioca pearls Lychee coconut jelly Flavored syrup** Cream Large straws 20 Oz. cups Directions: **Making flavored syrup: 1 cup of white sugar 1 cup of brown sugar 2 cups of juice (lychee or any juice or liquid) **Cook all together. Once begins to boil, remove from heat immediately. Let it cool. Store it in refrigerator. Club soda and flavored syrup should be cold. Boil the tapioca pearls, following the directions. Put lychee coconut jelly into a cup (about 2 ounces). Once the tapioca pearls are ready, put them into the cup with the lychee coconut jelly and then add the syrup (should be about 1 to 2 ounces for every 16 ounces of club soda) and mix well. Then add some cream to fill the rest of the cup and mix well. Use a wide straw to drink. 5 Creamy Thin Mint Juliette Mixed by: Girl Scouts of North East Ohio Ingredients: 1/2 Box of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies*** 6 Cups of vanilla ice cream 1 Cup of milk 1 Can of whipped cream Directions: Mix cookies, ice cream and milk in blender. Blend until desired thickness. Serve in tall milk shake glass and top with whipped cream. Garnish with crumbled cookies. Makes 2 servings. ***Girl Scout Thin Mints: tasty thin wafer covered with a smooth chocolate coating. Made with natural peppermint. 6 Pink Cadillac Mixed by: MaryKay Cosmetics Ingredients: 3/4 Cup sugar 3 Cups water 2/3 Cup fresh or frozen lemon juice 1/3 Cup cranberry juice cocktail, chilled Directions: In large non-metal pitcher, combine all ingredients. Stir to dissolve sugar. Serve over ice. Makes 4 cups. www.marykay.com/ritaduke 7 Tropical Thunder Mixed by: Society of Professional Journalists Ingredients: 1 Cup ruby red grapefruit juice 1 Cup tropical fruit juice 2 Oz. lemon juice 1 Oz. cherry glaze 1 Oz. whipped topping Directions: Swirl cherry glaze around bottom and sides of cup. Mix first three ingredients in separate container. Whip the juices with the whipped topping. Pour the mixture into the cherry glazed glasses. Enjoy! Makes 4 servings. 8 Angel’s Christmas Delight Mixed by: Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Board Of Lorain County Ingredients: Pineapple juice Cream of coconut Ice cream Whipped cream Shredded Coconut Chocolate syrup Directions: Blend pineapple juice, cream of coconut and ice cream in blender until smooth. Ingredients: 2 Gallons of rainbow sherbet 1 (2 Liter) bottle of Sprite 1 (1 Liter) Sunny Delight 1 (20 Oz.) container of Hawaiian Punch 1 Can of pineapple juice 2 Bananas 1 Container of strawberries Half pint of 1% milk Directions: Blend sherbet, Sprite, Sunny Delight, Hawaiian Punch and pineapple juice in blender or large punch bowl. Add in two blended bananas. Cut up strawberries. Blend again. Add milk gradually. Whip, watusui and get ready for a great Hawaiian treat—don’t forget to don your best beach attire – even if (especially if?) it’s snowing… Enjoy! 10 Nuclear Nightcap Mixed by: Gamma Tau Sigma, Student Alumni Organization Of Lorain County Community College Ingredients: ½ Cup of lime juice ¾ Cup sugar 4 Cups carbonated water 3 Drops green food coloring Maraschino cherries Ice to suit Directions: Add all ingredients (except cherries) in a 7-cup smoothie blender. Following manufacturer’s instructions, blend until a smooth consistency. Dispense into cups. Place cherry on top. You may opt to place a snowy rim of salt around the edge for a holiday effect! Serves 6. 11 Not-a-Colada Mixed by: Rewards Program of Lorain County Juvenile Court Ingredients: ½ Gallon vanilla ice cream 3 Cups frozen strawberries 1 (8 Oz.) can cream of coconut 1 (46 Fluid Oz.) can pineapple juice 6 Tablespoons rum extract 1 (2 Liter) bottle lemon-lime carbonated beverage Directions: Thaw strawberries. Pour the cream of coconut, pineapple juice, rum extract and strawberries into blender and mix. Blend until smooth. Pour mixture into punch bowl. Mix in the lemon-lime beverage. Add the softened ice cream and stir well. Serve immediately. Add ginger ale. Stir. Add sherbet by spoonfuls. Add Italian Ice. Stir. Keep cold. Pour over one - 2 liter bottle of cream soda on ice cream (use more or less to suit taste). Add ½ bottle of caramel sundae topping. Stir until blended. Ladle into punch cups and top each cup with whipped cream; drizzle with additional caramel topping. 15 Power of Purple Punch Mixed by: EMH Relay for Life Team (American Cancer Society) Ingredients: 4 Packages of grape Kool-Aid 2 Cups sugar 1 Quart water 2 (1 Quart) bottles of ginger ale, chilled 1 (46 Oz.) can of pineapple juice, chilled 1 Pint raspberry sherbet Directions: Mix Kool-Aid, sugar and water. Chill. Add pineapple juice. Stir in sherbet and ginger ale shortly before serving. Serves about 40. 16 Drink Me My Rights Mixed by: North Ridgeville Police Department Ingredients: 1 Gallon of your favorite lemonade (home-made or mix) 6 Whole fresh mint leaves 1 Freshly squeezed sweet tangerine juice 6 Sliced strawberries Directions: Mix all ingredients together and let stand in refrigerator for an hour. Stir before serving over ice or as a hot beverage. 17 Confetti Cooler Mixed by:Lorain County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Ingredients: 1 cup vanilla frozen yogurt 1/3 cup skim milk 1/3 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen) 2/3 cup strawberries, sliced (fresh or frozen) 1 banana, sliced 1 Tbsp blackberry or raspberry seedless fruit preserves Cool Whip topping (optional) Directions: Add all ingredients to a blender. Blend on high until smooth (about 10-15 seconds). Top with a dollop of Cool Whip if desired. Serves 3-4. Lorain County 18 Holiday Lights Punch Mixed by: Lorain County Metro Parks Ingredients: 16.00 c water 16.00 c sugar 8.00 qt strawberries, w/o sugar 4.00 c peach nectar 2.00 c fresh orange juice 1.00 c fresh lemon juice 8.00 qt club soda 3.00 qt club soda, frozen in cubes Directions: Boil sugar and water for 5 minutes or until a sugar syrup forms. Cool and set aside. (You may or may not use all or any of this syrup depending on how sweet you want your punch.) Put 3 quarts of club soda in ice cube trays and freeze. Pour peach nectar, orange juice and lemon juice into the largest mixing bowl you have. As you stir, begin adding syrup until you get a strong sweet/sour flavor. You must have this base in order for the mix to stand up to being cut with the club soda. When it is strong enough and yet carries a light lemon flavor stop adding syrup. Pour into containers and refrigerate. At party time pour one quart into the punch bowl and cut with 1 ½ to 2 bottles of club soda. Add a generous amount of frozen soda cubes. Float about 2 quarts of berries in the punch for decoration. 19 On My Honor Mixed by: North Ridgeville Boy Scout Troop 140 Ingredients: 3 parts pear nectar 1 part cranberry juice 1/2 part grapefruit juice Directions: Combine all ingredients and shake. Pour into glass and garnish with a cinnamon stick. 20 Mixed by: Ohio State Highway Patrol Ingredients: Hot Buttered Mix (makes 100 – One Tablespoon Servings): 1 Lb. unsalted butter, softened 1 Lb. light brown sugar 1 Lb. confectioner’s sugar 1 Quart vanilla ice cream, softened 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon 1 Teaspoon ground nutmeg Cider: 64 Oz. apple cider (half gallon) 32 Oz. cranapple juice (half a bottle) 23 Oz. pineapple juice (half a can) 1 Cup brown sugar 4 Cinnamon sticks 1-1/2 Teaspoon whole cloves Directions: Cream butter in a large bowl. Blend in sugars. Mix well. Mix in ice cream, cinnamon and nutmeg. Pour into plastic container; seal and freeze. Put liquid in percolator. In percolator basket, place brown sugar, cinnamon sticks and clove. Perk cider like coffee. In a coffee mug, measure 1-3 tablespoons of Hot Butter Mix, then fill with hot cider. Stir well and top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg. 21 2008 Winners VIRGIN MUDSLIDE Mixed by: Lorain County Community College Police Academy Winner of 2008: People’s Choice and Best Student Ingredients: 1 Quart vanilla ice cream ½ Cup cold coffee 1 Teaspoon hazelnut syrup ¼ Cup chocolate syrup 1-1/2 Cups heavy cream 2 Cups milk ¼ Oz. Ready whip topping 1 Maraschino cherry 1 Pinch chocolate sprinkles 1 Pinch cinnamon Directions: Place ice cream, cold coffee, milk, chocolate syrup and hazel nut syrup in blender, and blend until smooth. Add heavy cream and blend until well mixed. Chill parfait or martini glasses. While holding only the stems or bases of the glasses, rim the inside of the glasses with chocolate syrup. Place a swirl of Ready whip on top with a maraschino cherry and chocolate sprinkles and cinnamon for garnish. A great drink for designated drivers or for those who are sensitive to alcohol. Amounts should be altered to taste. “HOT PURSUIT” Hot Cranberry Punch Mixed by: Lorain County Sheriff’s Office Winner of 2008: Best Tasting and Best Name Ingredients: 2 Cups cranberry juice 2 Quarts of apple cider ½ Cup sugar 1 Orange shredded w/ 6 whole cloves 2 Cinnamon sticks Garnish: orange slices or cinnamon sticks Directions: Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker. Simmer covered on low for 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Garnish and serve. Makes 10 servings. PATROL POST PEPPERMINT PUNCH Mixed by: Ohio State Highway Patrol Winner of 2008: Best Overall and Best Presentation Ingredients: 1 Quart Eggnog 1 – 1 Liter bottle club soda, chilled ½ Gallon peppermint ice cream, softened Hard peppermint candies, crushed Directions: Stir together first 3 ingredients in a punch bowl or large bowl. Sprinkle with peppermint candy and serve immediately. Makes about 1 gallon 22 2007 Winner NO FOG MOCHA NOG Mixed by: Ohio State Highway Patrol Ingredients: 1-1/2 Tablespoons instant coffee granules ½ Cup hot water 1 - 32 Oz. carton refrigerated eggnog ½ Cup chocolate syrup ½ Cup whipping cream, whipped Garnish: Grated semi-sweet chocolate Directions: Dissolve instant coffee granules in hot water. Cool.Combine coffee and eggnog. Add chocolate syrup.Cover and chill thoroughly. Fold in whipped cream just before serving. Garnish, if desired. 2006 Winner BLACK TIE Mixed by: Lorain County Joint Vocational School Ingredients: 2 cups sugar 1 cup water 12 oz evaporated milk 1 tbsp almond extract ½ gallon vanilla ice cream 4 liters Lemon Lime soda Directions: In a saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil and stir. Remove from heat. Add milk and extract. Chill until cold. To serve, pour a portion of the chilled mixture into a punch bowl. Add ice cream and soda to taste. 2005 Winner FLYING WHEEL JAVA EXPRESS Mixed by: Ohio State Highway Patrol Elyria Post Ingredients: 6 Cups water 1/2 Cup instant hot chocolate mix 1/2 Cup sugar 1/4 Cup instant coffee granules 1/2 Gallon vanilla ice cream 1/2 Gallon chocolate ice cream 1 Cup whipped cream Chocolate shavings (optional) Directions: Boil water. Add hot chocolate mix, sugar and coffee granules. Stir until dissolved. Cover and refrigerate overnight or at least 4 hrs. Thirty minutes before serving, add vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Stir mixture. Garnish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. 23
