As Junior League women we should strive to accomplish our mission: helping the
community and training women. I want to share a few thoughts about training
women. AJLI teaches that the best leaders should be servants. We see that in the
greatest leader of all time, Jesus Christ. He told his disciples that one should never
think oneself more important than others. Jesus then washed and dried their feet.

from the President
I’m not saying we are going to start washing feet, but we need to humble ourselves
so we are willing to serve others. A lady that is a dear friend of mine sent me a note
recently reminding me of the characteristics of a Godly woman. (Thanks J) Society
teaches us that a woman is successful if she has power, fame, prestige, or money. But
God teaches us in Proverbs 31: 25-26 and 30 what makes a successful lady.
Verse 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
Verse 26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
Verse 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord
is to be praised.
As Spring Market approaches, I want us to work our shifts serving others. It is one of my favorite
things to do in the League. Enjoy meeting others and come with a joyful spirit then you will be
a blessing to others. I will be working with you, and at the end, we will all be proud of what we
accomplished. Remember to thank the Spring Market committee for their hard work and service
to our League and community. Thank you ladies!

This is the season to Live, Love, and Celebrate. After spending the holidays with family
and friends and making new resolutions for the year, it is time to figure out what matters
in your life. Then learn to live it, love it, and celebrate it. Put the people and things in
front of you that matter the most and go for it! Don’t hold back and have no regrets.
Always give 110%.
Our Charlons committee has been working so hard putting together the infamous
Spring Market issue. The ladies have really stepped up and had a huge part in making
this issue so special. Just looking at all the Spring Market information and ads has us
ready to shop and spend! There are going to be so many unique merchants and fun things happening during Spring Market
this year. Breakfast with Bunnies is the cutest idea ever! I know we can’t wait to have fun with our friends while working our
shifts and getting to know other members better!
We would like to thank everyone who has put their love into making this issue awesome. And as always….remember to
cherish those memories!

of the Junior League of Monroe have
devoted countless volunteer hours
to meet the needs of the people and
organizations of our community.
Community leaders have always looked
to the JLM for leadership in starting new
community programs. As a result, the JLM
has often been the catalyst that turned an
idea into a success that benefitted many
in our area. Here are a few examples of
programs that we have started in recent
years: Court Appointed Special Advocates
(CASA), Teen Screen, Shots for Tots, Teen
Court, Operation Abstinence, and Project
Child.

Admissions Loves
Finding New Members
Both Carla Simmons and Shelly Harrell have
previously served in leadership and membership
roles in Spring Market and Provisional
committees, but the chance to recruit potential
new members and see the excited faces of the
new Provisional class inspired them to chair
the Admissions committee this year. They have
been busy revising the Provisional packets
for the 2014-2015 year and also working with
Dawn Sager, the Sustainers on Standby chair,
to pick a date for the April 2014 Provisional
reception. With the February 14 deadline
for the admissions packets, the Admissions
committee is very busy gathering all the
required signatures and compiling a list of the
upcoming new Provisional class. Letters will go
out to the prospective members in March with
information for the 2014 Provisional reception.

Louise Seymour Community Impact Award – 2014
Louise Seymour devoted her life to community service with an unselfish dedication inspirational to all. This is our way
of honoring other Sustainers for the same outstanding qualities and contributions to the community that memorialize
Louise Seymour.
The Executive Board will be responsible for selecting the recipient of this award.
She will be introduced at the Annual Spring Dinner in May and will be featured in the summer issue of Charlons.

The Junior League of Monroe is fortunate to have incredible volunteers, who are committed to our mission of
promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving our community. We would like
to recognize this year’s outstanding volunteer at our Annual Spring Dinner Meeting in May. She will also be
featured in the summer issue of Charlons.
This is your opportunity to recommend a woman that you feel deserves this award. Requirements include:
• Must be a member in good standing and have fulfilled all requirements of JLM Active Status.
• Nominations should be based primarily upon outstanding performance within the League. Of
secondary and less importance is her involvement in and commitment to organizations outside of the
League.
• She should be a member who has demonstrated the principles expressed in JLM’s mission and vision
statement. Her spirit and nature should reflect a positive image of JLM.
• The nominee’s performance should exceed the expectations of general membership with unsurpassed
interest in volunteerism and a commitment to community service.

Shopping for a Cause
committee news
This holiday season the Charity Shopping Pass committee coordinated
the second annual Charity Shopping Pass. The event was a big success;
nearly 80 vendors participated! For the first time, vendors sold tickets as
well as League members and passes and booklets were distributed to
guide shoppers to local merchants. The committee was excited to receive
help and support from Ashley West as well as Amy Lange, especially with
regards to securing publicity for the event. The event was publicized on
five local early morning shows, billboards, Delta Style, Bayou Life, and
our very own Charlons, which not only made the Shopping Pass more
successful, but also was a great PR opportunity to showcase the Junior League of Monroe to the community. This will
undoubtedly encourage even more local businesses to participate in the program in the future. The committee was thankful
for Denise Simpson and Ashley West who assisted with the early morning programs and represented the Junior League
and the Charity Shopping Pass event with class. The money raised will go into the League’s general fund to help provide
funding assistance with other charity projects, such as Kids in the Kitchen, TLC, Families Can’t Wait, Education Task Force and
other areas where help is needed. The committee is now focusing on getting organized for next year. Committee members
recognize areas which are in need of improvement and are very interested in receiving feedback from all League members.
The committee feels that even the smallest feedback can result in big improvements and would welcome comments from
the membership.

Keeping You Connected
New chair, Cherry Coon, got right to work making sure the Yearbook
was published on time and has been making regular updates to both
the Facebook and Junior League Website. Cherry and her committee
stay busy adding in data to the website and Facebook page. Their
goal is to make sure that each member is informed about everything
going on in the League through several different outlets.
They update the pages with pictures of various DIAD activities and
other gatherings of Junior League Actives and Provisionals. Stay
tuned and keep checking the website and Facebook for all the
exciting things that are coming up!

The Families Can’t Wait committee has had a
very busy year so far. Committee members are
visiting between 30-40 new moms and NICU
moms each month. One gift that we give the first
time moms is a onzie that says “This Side Up” to
remind them to put their baby on their back to
sleep. This year the committee has also partnered
with Life Choices and Nurse-Family Partnership
to provide them with car seats and pack-n-plays
for their outreach projects targeting the moms of
Northeast Louisiana. New moms and NICU moms
may feel scared, lost, and alone, and it is our
committee’s job to make them feel comfortable
and loved through these new experiences. The
committee plans to continue to love and guide
moms in the spring. Members will continue
making visits to first time moms in the hospitals,
providing education and support when needed
to help ease the transition into motherhood.

needs children, I found that I needed guidance
even with family members surrounding me. Alisha
Banks from Families Helping Families was such a
blessing and lifeline to me and my husband, so I
feel like I am helping to give back to my community
by making sure that moms are aware of this

Collect, Cook, Celebrate!
Cookbooks have long been a collector’s item
for many cooks. Junior League cookbooks are
among these iconic items in their respective
communities. Our very own The Cotton Country
Collection cookbook was listed by USA Today
as a Top Five Regional Cookbook in the United
Sates. This cookbook is a classic among others
in kitchens across the south. Celebrations on the
Bayou and Cooking in High Cotton are also favorites
among our community.
Our committee has been hard at work selling our
cookbooks at area events; such as the Downtown
River Market in Monroe. We have made a number
of sales which in turn bring money back into
our community. We look forward to selling our
cookbooks at the Spring Market in March and
hope that you will stop by our booth. Look for
samples from our cookbooks made by our very
own members to taste. Need help for that Easter
brunch? We’ve included the Plantation Easter
Menu out of Celebrations on the Bayou for ideas.

very important to me, because it gives me a
chance to volunteer in my community as well as
allows me to be a part of a great organization. My mother, Patsy, and sister-in-law, Anna Lisa,
were both active members of the JLM and I am
proud to follow in their footsteps. You could say
I grew up being involved in the League because
I used to go to meetings and various events
with my mom when I was little. My husband,
Josh, supports my involvement with the League
because we are both from this area and want the
best for our community. Josh always says that he
loves how important the League is to me. He also
enjoys spending quality time with our 7 month

JLM’s 16th Annual Spring Market
ith 2013 behind us and the spring of 2014
fast approaching, the Junior League of Monroe’s
Spring Market will soon kick-off the 16th annual
event on Friday, March 21, 2014. This year will also
bring an exciting new event focused on family fun.
Breakfast with the Bunnies will make its debut on
Saturday, March 22, 2014. This event will feature a
light breakfast, a photo shoot with live bunnies by an
area photographer with portrait packages available,
a visit from Peter Cottontail himself, a book reading,
balloons, children’s activities and more! The ticket cost
for Breakfast with the Bunnies is $15 per family and will
include one general admission re-admittance ticket,
to be used on Saturday or Sunday. The Provisional
Member class of 2013 -2014 is taking pride in handling
this event as part of their Spring Market project. Of
course there will also be the typical fair of merchants
from all over the country to shop and enjoy, plus food
vendors sure to make your mouth water.
The Market opens Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. with
the classic “Shop ‘Til You Drop!” event, which features
a champagne brunch catered by The Coffee Bean,
entertainment by Rod Allen Payne, and extended
shopping until 11:00 a.m. Tickets for this event are
$30. That evening, Spring Market’s signature event,
“Girls Just Want to Have Fun!,” commences at 6:00
p.m., and includes catering by Thurman’s Food Factory
NEW!
with four buffet stations – that means more time for
Shopping! The evening also includes entertainment
by Mike McKenzie, door prizes, and more. Tickets will
be sold at both preferred shopping events for a new
Preferred Event Raffle that no woman could refuse. Of
course there will be the return of everyone’s favorite,
“Market-ritas.” Tickets for Girls Just Want to Have Fun
are $40. These events are the preferred shopping
times because of the small crowds and first dibs on
the best merchandise! This is a perfect opportunity
to grab your friends and have some much needed girl
time.
General shopping is available on Friday from 11:00
a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00
p.m., and on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
General shopping tickets are $6 in advance, and $8 at
the door. No Strollers allowed during any shopping
events please. Tickets can be purchased by contacting
Terri Arthur at the League House by phone at (318)
322-3236. You may also stop by the League House,
located at 2811 Cameron Street in Monroe at any
time between 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through
Thursday.

The Thomas Jefferson Upper Elementary girls basketball
team is about to begin their season. The team is being
sponsored by the TLC committee. They will look great on the
court wearing their new purple and gold uniforms. The girls
are in the 5th grade. For many, this is their first time on the
court. The team has been practicing hard under the direction
of Coach Norsworthy and trainer Nyana Elliott. Coach
Norsworthy says he is looking forward to seeing the girls play
and win this season. We are so proud to sponsor this group of
very talented young ladies as they hit the court. Good Luck!
Tools and Literacy for Children, submitted by Carmen Parks, Chair
Step into Spring
Kids in the Kitchen is hoping to work more with the TLC
committee this Spring and wants to get involved in some
of TLC’s projects. Kids in the Kitchen is planning on a “step
contest” using the pedometers that were purchased with
the Pepsi Grant. They want to award the top class with a
pizza party and prizes for each grade that has the most steps
logged with their pedometers.
A little procrastination turned into a wonderful opportunity
for me to chair Kids in the Kitchen. I waited too long to turn in
my placement form and was assigned to Kids in the Kitchen.
This was fine with me because of my belief in the good the
League does. Next thing I knew, I was getting a text asking
to chair the committee! I was originally hesitant about it Kids in the Kitchen, submitted by Kathryn Bagley, Chair
because I wanted to be in the League longer before taking
a leadership role. Besides being very nervous, I accepted
because Toni and Jenny believed I could be a chair!

Planning to
Show Some Love
Research and Development continues to work towards
updated strategic planning with a new 5 year plan. The
committee loves doing research and this winter used the
cottage meetings as an opportunity to gather some data. The
committee helped arrange and coordinate the meetings and
will be evaluating the feedback received through the surveys.
Online surveys were offered this year for the first time and the
initial response to this approach seems to be positive! The
committee continues to work on welcome packets for new
members/transfers and used the cottage meeting surveys as
another opportunity to solicit input from membership on the
best types of things to include in the packets. The committee
continues to evaluate existing service projects and is also
looking to our community to identify service needs which
are consistent with the Junior League’s mission, vision, and
purpose. The committee is developing plans so League
ladies can show their love for our community in ways that
make an impact, serve a purpose, and embrace diversity.

Each year the Education Task Force reads and awards
grants to our area private, public and parochial schools
in Ouachita Parish and Monroe City school districts. This
year we had 44 grants submitted, and it’s heartbreaking
for us as a committee to read and know that we don’t
have enough money to fund every single grant. It is
also a difficult task to read through the proposals and
decide which ones get funded and which ones don’t.
We are happy to say that we awarded 27 grants: 18
elementary, 4 middle schools, and 5 high schools for a
total of $12,567.56! We held the mini grant reception
at the League house on Thursday, November 14, 2013.
Recipients were recognized, received a certificate, their
grant money and were treated to dinner.
We also partnered with Richwood High School and
Wossman High School to provide free ACT workshops
to their junior and senior students. We will offer ACT
workshops again in the spring to students at Richwood
and Wossman in order to help them prepare for spring
tests. We also will continue our tradition of being
a foundation sponsor and patron for the Scholars’
Banquet. This year marks the 30th anniversary for the
banquet which honors area high school seniors for
their academic achievements. I believe in what this
committee stands for and provides to our community.
As an educator, I see firsthand what the impact of a
quality education has on students. It’s an honor to
support students in pursuing their goals and teachers
in their desires to make a difference for their students.

Provisionals
Double the Love
The Provisional class has been very busy completing one of
their Provisional projects. Ladies in this year’s provisional group
worked with the Center for Children and Families and CASA to
collect toys at their annual Stuff-A-Bus toy drive at the mall. The
ladies worked shifts in the rain and cold to collect toys. The toys
were later given to abused and neglected children in our area
for Christmas. This project allowed each lady representing the
League to serve children in our community and also helped
to highlight the importance of what the League does and the
impact our projects have. About 13 years ago, CASA started as
a Junior League project and has grown to serve thousands of
hurting children in our area and has worked diligently to find
loving adoptive homes for children. This is a great example
of what can be accomplished when dedicated women come
together with a common vision and leadership to build a better
community.
In the spring, the Provisional Committee is going to be hard at
work again. Provisionals have two big projects happening. The
first is our Provisional Spring Market project, which we are really
excited about. It is a new event at Spring Market that the ladies
will help to facilitate and run for the Spring Market committee.
In the second project we will work with the Louisiana Purchase
Gardens and Zoo to assist in cleaning up to make the grounds
beautiful for visitors to enjoy. This current Provisional class is an
outstanding and passionate group of ladies who truly want to
make a difference in our community.

in Your Placement
For each members’ benefit, Placement committee members
and their assigned committees are below.
Placement committee members are gearing up for their
busiest season after working towards making initial contacts
to welcome members back to a new League year. Members
had the opportunity to work with placement advisors in
September to address concerns and secure new placements
as they settled into League life this year. During my Provisional
year, I was overwhelmed by the choices of committees for
members to serve. For this reason, the committee is working
hard to educate members and Provisionals on choices to
assure each lady is able to find their place. If members are
happy with their placement, they are more likely to serve to
their maximum potential.

As spring approaches, new placements are looming, and
the Placement committee wants to be sure each lady finds
a place to serve that meets her needs and fosters love and
growth in the Junior League. All Junior League members
will be contacted by placement advisors to gain insight
on placement decisions for the 2014-2015 League year.
Members will need to consider the various committees,
the responsibilities, and time requirements. Any members
interested in serving as committee chairs should complete
a self-nomination form and submit it to the League office
as soon as possible. It is the goal for the committee to have
all placement feedback completed before the end of March
2014, so that placement decisions can be finalized before
the April general meeting.

e chose this committee because we wanted to give
the League members some fun things to do while
serving others. We also wanted to create some
opportunities for the ladies to get to know one another
outside of the League house. We had a wonderful turnout
for our Christmas Party at Nicole West’s beautiful home.
The masterful sounds of Alan Brockman made for a festive
atmosphere and the food provided by Thurman’s was
delightful. Thanks again to all those who attended and
helped make this a great evening with our friends and
family. This spring we are excited to add a new dimension
of fun and fellowship by throwing our first ever crawfish
boil for members and spouses. The details are in the works,
so plan to attend!

Showing the
League’s Love
The Marketing/PR committee is a great way to be involved in all the Junior League activities. You get to see how each
committee works with people in Monroe to make our city better. This past fall the Marketing/PR committee showed the
community, through publishing articles in local newspapers and magazines, the Junior League’s support for the Susan G.
Komen society, the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, and the Council on Aging. By publishing these articles, Marketing/
PR hopes to raise the community’s awareness of the impact the Junior League has on our community. Marketing/PR also
helped with the Charity Shopping Pass. While the Charity Shopping Pass committee members were doing a great job
soliciting businesses for this event, the Marketing/PR committee got the word out through billboard advertising, radio spots,
and appearances on local tv morning shows.
This spring we are of course gearing up for the Junior League of Monroe’s much anticipated Spring Market. Once again we
want to make sure the community has this weekend marked on their calendars so they don’t miss out. And of course we will
be covering any of the other committee projects that will be coming up.

“Leadership Empowered” in Scottsdale, AZ
Jenny’s experience: Jennifer Ables and I descended on the AJLI Winter Leadership
conference in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 24, 2014. As we left chilly Monroe,
snow flurries in the air, we arrived in sunny 70 degree Scottsdale with a passion
to learn more about being a servant leader. The theme for the Winter Conference
was “Leadership Empowered.” The Junior League of Phoenix welcomed us warmly
by graciously giving us their own cookbook, “Pomegranates & Prickly Pears”, and a
handy bag that was big enough to throw everything but the kitchen sink in. The
conference officially began on Friday morning with the President Elects & President
Elect Elects (P-squared) having different workshops to attend. We were divided
into groups by our League size, so that we could interact with those who had
similar size membership. Talking with the other Leagues about their experiences
and bouncing ideas off each other was very useful.

AJLI Winter Conference
The workshops were very helpful and informative; some were “The Business Behind
the League’s Mission”, “Tapping the Potential of All of Your Members”, and “Servant
Leadership” with Vickie Clark. I can actually say I enjoyed these workshops and
brought back essential tools to help me be a servant leader for the Junior League
of Monroe. I am excited to help our Membership, our Board, our President and our
community be the best that it possibly can be. I was once told that you earn your
reputation by the things you do every day, so let’s go out and earn our reputation!
Jen’s experience: One great opportunity and privilege we had was participating
in a “Past President AJLI Forum.” Current AJLI President Toni Freeman asked each
past president to describe a servant leader and how their experience in the
league has shaped their vision as a volunteer. League members from around the
country were able to ask specific questions regarding leadership traits, how to
manage a personal life with volunteering and how to move their league’s mission
forward. Each past president said the key to being a great leader is to listen and to
focus on people. It was great to experience the wisdom and knowledge of these
past presidents, and we hope to bring these traits of servant leadership to the JLM
and to the community of Ouachita Parish.

Staci Albritton Mitchell with Albritton’s Photography has been named the official Junior League of Monroe’s Photographer.
She has succeeded Lamar’s Photography upon his retirement. We will all miss Lamar along with his great work and service
to the League.
Staci, a native to West Monroe, is currently a Sustainer to the League. She joined the League in 1999 for her Provisional year
and was an Active member from 2000-2008. She served on many committees including Charlons and Cookbook. Some of
her memories of the League were working at Bloomingdeals, 9:00 a.m. meetings, walking the 2:00 a.m. shift for Race for the
Cure, and meeting all the new ladies whom she would become great friends with.
Staci is married to Jay Mitchell who is the assistant District Attorney for the 5th district. Together they have four children, Calli,
a senior at LSU, Casey, a sophomore at LSU, Mary Allison, a freshman at LSU, and Elaina, an LSU grad who lives in New Orleans
and is engaged to be married. Staci also attended LSU. After graduating and returning home, she worked with her Dad at
Albritton’s, then just a camera shop. She later took over and transformed the shop into Albritton’s Photography as we know
it today.

Staci is a very active member of our community. Along with being a Sustainer to JLM, she is also currently the City of West
Monroe’s Alderman, Chairman of the Board with West Monroe/West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce, Board Member for
the West Monroe High School Foundation, a member of First United Methodist Church, Kiwanis International Club Member,
and Past President of the Cancer Foundation League. When Staci is not busy serving our community, she is busy at work at
Albritton’s Photography. For League members who need pictures for an announcement or Babies in Bloom for Charlons, your
session will be complimentary. Be on the lookout for Easter pictures with live bunnies and lambs; they are sure to be super
