September - The Yarn Haven
September—October 2016
A Place to Learn, Share & Be Creative
Scoreboard KAL/CAL..
It’s football time in Tennessee! This year we’re going
in a totally new direction with our Scoreboard KAL/
CAL. We have a new pattern, a new yarn to use,
and new rules to go by. If you are interested in
following the University of TN Volunteers on the
football field while making a lovely chevron cowl to
support your team, then stop by to get your orange,
white & grey yarn and your pattern. Crocheters, this year we’re also doing a pattern for
you!
Fall Finished Projects Contest...
Our Summer Projects Contest was such a success that we’re going
to continue doing one in the Fall (September—November). We
want to see your finished projects! To enter, fill out a card
when you purchase your yarn. When you finish your project,
bring it in for us to take a photo and we’ll put your card into our
drawing. At the end of November, we will randomly draw 1 project
card and that person will win a $25 gift certificate! There’s no limit
to the number of times you can enter, but you must fill out a card
at the time you purchase your yarn. So get those knitting needles and hooks working and
you could be our fall winner!!
Fall Event 2016...
Our Fall Event will be Friday, September 30 from 6—8 pm.

Fiber Friends…
Through the month of September we will be making breast prosthesis for breast cancer
patients. There is a great pattern on the charity project page of our website. Please
use the softest, non-wool, machine-washable DK yarn that you can afford. We need
ALL sizes (A, B, C, D & DD). Make one or a pair and help us give back to the women in
our community who have dealt with breast cancer.
Need a Bag Lining?
We all love to knit or crochet bags. But many times the bags would be nicer with a lining. Kelora is an
excellent tailor and would love to put a lining in your bags. Just bring by your bag for her and she will
contact you with the cost of adding a lining to your creation.
Blocking and Felting?
Many times we have heard folks say that they can’t felt their project because they have a front-loading
washer. Or they know their garment should be blocked, but they are scared to do it. Blocking will smooth
out any wrinkles, stretch garment out to the correct size, relax the stitches so they are all more uniform
and make the garment look and fit better. We can provide these services for you. Just bring your
projects to us for felting or blocking. Cost is $10 per item. (If there are several items for the same
project that need blocking, cost will be a total of $15.)
Need Knitting/Crocheting Help on a Project?
Just call the shop and see when we'll have room in one of our Weekly classes. It's just $12.50 for 2 hours
and our teachers can help get you back on track with your project.
Weekly Classes...
We have Weekly Classes mornings, afternoons, and on the evenings we are open. Mimi’s classes are for
knitters & Kelora’s classes are for knitters OR crocheters. If you need help with a project or just want to

Learn to read Crochet Charts - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Kelora Goethe
Monday, September 19 (6-8 pm)
Thursdays, October 27 (10 am—Noon)
In recent years, charting of crochet patterns has become more and more common, to the
extent that some patterns have no words, charts only. Don’t let this stop you from
making those crocheted items that appeal to you. This class will teach you to read those
patterns and gain confidence in a new area of your crochet skills. Supplies: worsted
weight yarn and a size G or H hook.
Continental Knitting - 2 hours (Cost: $25)
Instructor: Kelora Goethe
Friday, September 23 (10 am—Noon)
Have you ever watched a continental knitter and pondered what it would be like to
knit with such a smooth motion? Never letting go of your needle? Using much less
motion in your arm and shoulder? Maybe it’s time to add continental knitting to your
knitting toolbox! In this class you will learn to tension your yarn in your left hand for
knitting and purling. This method will make knitting & unknitting smoother and easier
to discern errors, and therefore correct those errors. Supplies: worsted or DK weight
yarn & needles to match.
Loop Shawl - 2 hours (Cost: $25)
Instructor: Mimi Kezer
Saturday, September 24 (10 am—Noon)

purling. It would make a great beginner project or one for the more adventurous knitter as
well. It uses 2 contrasting skeins of fingering weight yarn (380 yards each), and 2 miniskeins of coordinating colors for pop! Supplies: yarn, size 6-32” circular needles and paid
pattern on Ravelry.
Yarn Dyeing Workshop - 2 hours (Cost: $40)

wear some old clothes. Space is limited so sign up today!

backwards, attaching the piece as we go & the I-cord bind-off. Supplies: 12 skeins of Noro
Silk Garden in several different colorways (you can just buy 3-4 to begin with and add
others as you go) and a size 9-16” needle.
Ode to Skye Wrap - 3 hours (Cost: $30)
Instructor: Kelora Goethe
Saturday, October 22 (1-4 pm)
This is a great project to learn how to make cables as well as how to read charts as the
pattern is only charted. It uses aran weight yarn to work the pattern as written or for a
lighter weight wrap worsted weight yarn may be used. This wrap is a lovely warm
accessory to curl up with on a cold winter’s night. Supplies: Paid pattern on Ravelry,
cable needle, size 8-40” circular needle, 8 skeins of Cascade 220 Aran, stitch markers, &
a sense of adventure. J
Color Work Boot Toppers - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Mimi Kezer
Saturday, October 22 (1-3 pm)
Get your feet wet with stranded color work and make these lovely gift-worthy boot
toppers as well. Learn the basic techniques of two-handed stranding, yarn
trapping, weaving in ends and the jogless job. Tips, too, on how to make a perfect
circular join and a lateral braid. Homework: Cast on 70 sts using Mimi’s Chinese
Waitress Cast On tutorial on YouTube. Supplies: 2 colors of Cascade 220 or
Plymouth Galway and size 5 –16” circular needle.
Learning Cables- 2 hours (Cost: $25)
Instructor: Kelora Goethe
Monday, October 24 (10 am—Noon)
Knitting cables looks so complicated and intimidating. In this workshop the
mystique of cables will be unraveled! Students will begin a scarf with a pattern that includes reading a cable chart as well as written instructions.
Supples: 2 skeins of Mirasol Nuna yarn, a size 6 needle, a cable needle, &
stitch markers.
CLASSES…
(All supplies must be purchased at The Yarn Haven)
Baby Booties...Passing Down Knitting Patterns in the “Oral Tradition” - 3 hours (Cost: $30)
Saturday, October 29 (1-4 pm)
Instructor: Kelora Goethe
In times past, before the internet, Ravelry & easy access to knitting books, patterns
were passed from knitter to knitter by “telling” the next knitter how to knit a certain
item. In this class the teacher will “tell” the students how to knit a pair of baby
booties (who of us doesn’t know someone expecting a baby or grandbaby!)
Students will write their own pattern for these booties as they knit them. The size
can be made larger or smaller by adjusting the size of needle and the weight of
yarn. Supplies: 1 skein of Plymouth Dreambaby or Cascade Cherub DK and size 2
double-pointed needles.
Glissando Moebius - 3 hours (Cost: $30)
Instructor: Mimi Kezer
Saturday, October 29 (1-4 pm)
Mimi’s pattern for this colorwork moebius uses only slipped stitches (no fair isle!) to
make this lovely design. Learn the moebius cast-on as well as the lateral braid and
some fun yarn-weaving for the edges. Supplies: 2 skeins each Noro Silk Garden Solo
and Noro Silk Garden, size 7-40” circular needle & stitch marker. Pattern included
with class.

item. Sale Bin items and Special Orders are not returnable.
Our “Go Green” Program…
If you bring your own bag to put your purchases in...or don’t take a paper bag...then you get a ticket for our
