September - The Yarn Haven
September—October 2016 A Place to Learn, Share & Be Creative Scoreboard KAL/CAL.. It’s football time in Tennessee! This year we’re going in a totally new direction with our Scoreboard KAL/ CAL. We have a new pattern, a new yarn to use, and new rules to go by. If you are interested in following the University of TN Volunteers on the football field while making a lovely chevron cowl to support your team, then stop by to get your orange, white & grey yarn and your pattern. Crocheters, this year we’re also doing a pattern for you! Fall Finished Projects Contest... Our Summer Projects Contest was such a success that we’re going to continue doing one in the Fall (September—November). We want to see your finished projects! To enter, fill out a card when you purchase your yarn. When you finish your project, bring it in for us to take a photo and we’ll put your card into our drawing. At the end of November, we will randomly draw 1 project card and that person will win a $25 gift certificate! There’s no limit to the number of times you can enter, but you must fill out a card at the time you purchase your yarn. So get those knitting needles and hooks working and you could be our fall winner!! Fall Event 2016... Fiber Friends… Through the month of September we will be making breast prosthesis for breast cancer patients. There is a great pattern on the charity project page of our website. Please use the softest, non-wool, machine-washable DK yarn that you can afford. We need ALL sizes (A, B, C, D & DD). Make one or a pair and help us give back to the women in our community who have dealt with breast cancer. Need a Bag Lining? We all love to knit or crochet bags. But many times the bags would be nicer with a lining. Kelora is an excellent tailor and would love to put a lining in your bags. Just bring by your bag for her and she will contact you with the cost of adding a lining to your creation. Blocking and Felting? Many times we have heard folks say that they can’t felt their project because they have a front-loading washer. Or they know their garment should be blocked, but they are scared to do it. Blocking will smooth out any wrinkles, stretch garment out to the correct size, relax the stitches so they are all more uniform and make the garment look and fit better. We can provide these services for you. Just bring your projects to us for felting or blocking. Cost is $10 per item. (If there are several items for the same project that need blocking, cost will be a total of $15.) Need Knitting/Crocheting Help on a Project? Just call the shop and see when we'll have room in one of our Weekly classes. It's just $12.50 for 2 hours and our teachers can help get you back on track with your project. Weekly Classes... We have Weekly Classes mornings, afternoons, and on the evenings we are open. Mimi’s classes are for knitters & Kelora’s classes are for knitters OR crocheters. If you need help with a project or just want to start a new project with someone giving you help each step along the way, then come join one of our Weekly Classes. Don’t let this stop you from making those crocheted items that appeal to you. This class will teach you to read those patterns and gain confidence in a new area of your crochet skills. Supplies: worsted weight yarn and a size G or H hook. Continental Knitting - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Friday, September 23 (10 am—Noon) Have you ever watched a continental knitter and pondered what it would be like to knit with such a smooth motion? Never letting go of your needle? Using much less motion in your arm and shoulder? Maybe it’s time to add continental knitting to your knitting toolbox! In this class you will learn to tension your yarn in your left hand for knitting and purling. This method will make knitting & unknitting smoother and easier to discern errors, and therefore correct those errors. Supplies: worsted or DK weight yarn & needles to match. Loop Shawl - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Saturday, September 24 (10 am—Noon) Treat yourself to a fun and colorful knit with this beautiful shawl! Supples: 2 skeins of Mirasol Nuna yarn, a size 6 needle, a cable needle, & stitch markers. CLASSES… (All supplies must be purchased at The Yarn Haven) Baby Booties...Passing Down Knitting Patterns in the “Oral Tradition” - 3 hours (Cost: $30) Saturday, October 29 (1-4 pm) Instructor: Kelora Goethe In times past, before the internet, Ravelry & easy access to knitting books, patterns were passed from knitter to knitter by “telling” the next knitter how to knit a certain item. In this class the teacher will “tell” the students how to knit a pair of baby booties (who of us doesn’t know someone expecting a baby or grandbaby!) Students will write their own pattern for these booties as they knit them. The size can be made larger or smaller by adjusting the size of needle and the weight of yarn. Supplies: 1 skein of Plymouth Dreambaby or Cascade Cherub DK and size 2 double-pointed needles. Glissando Moebius - 3 hours (Cost: $30) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Saturday, October 29 (1-4 pm) Mimi’s pattern for this colorwork moebius uses only slipped stitches (no fair isle!) to make this lovely design. Learn the moebius cast-on as well as the lateral braid and some fun yarn-weaving for the edges. Supplies: 2 skeins each Noro Silk Garden Solo and Noro Silk Garden, size 7-40” circular needle & stitch marker. Pattern included with class. ****************************************************************************** Essential Skills University (ESU) will begin this October and continue through the school year.
