Judges Critique
By Judge Cindy Scott
What a beautiful setting for a National! The hotel and grounds were wonderful and the hotel staff was great. Adding a
visit by former President Bill Clinton was certainly a highlight for the week also.
I must start this with my kudos to the National Committee. Sue Carbajal and her team made this one for the record
books and Jackie Hubble, what can I say? She volunteered to take over for me (silly girl) and we’ve been working
together for a year to get her on board. She did an outstanding job and I didn’t worry about a thing. I tried to get her
to take it permanently and she politely declined. I won’t repeat what she REALLY said.
I was hoping for a good turnout for the “left” coast and I wasn’t disappointed. The quality was extremely high
throughout the classes and, I know it’s an old cliché, but there just weren’t enough awards to go around.
First, a couple of observations. Fronts have improved greatly over the last 20 years but still have a ways to go. If you
were there you saw me measuring shoulder layback and upper arm. Lack of front reach was analogous to short upper
arm. Narrow chests and lack of depth were seen often in addition to some very straight pasterns but, overall, I was very
pleased with my entry. Rears were strong and side gait on the majority of the entry was outstanding. Nice neck sets
and curves abounded and, for the most part, dogs were in pretty good condition for the early Spring
What do I look for in a Whippet? Smooth, smooth, smooth. Gentle curves, correct shoulders, length and return of
upper arm, sound movement with open sidegait and good, solid condition. Long, flat muscles are important to me and
that’s one reason I go to the rear of the dog to check.
6-9 puppy dog:
1st Tangens The Maverick Cosmonaut.
What a puppy! This Irish marked brindle had a wonderfully
chisled head with large, dark eye and plenty of underjaw.
Excellent layback of shoulder and return of upper arm.
Proper bend of pasterns. Well muscled for a puppy this age.
Absolutely flawless coming and going with a perfectly
balanced side gait I don’t think I’ve seen at this age.
For these reasons, he was my Reserve Winners Dog.
2nd Shantellie Tye One On. Black masked brindle. Compact little dog. Solid mover with nice shoulders and well
muscled rear.
3rd Chelsea Chanticleer. Fawn brindle and white parti. Great layback on this puppy and nice depth of brisket. A
little unsure of himself and I would bet this was his first time in the ring.
4th Maverick Moonshine for Tangens at GP. Fawn brindle, littermate to first place. Big dark eyes with plenty of
underjaw and good pasterns. Correct short hock. Beautiful underline but is flattening out over the top a little too much
at this age. When he comes into his own, he’s one to watch.

9-12 puppy dog
To me, this is always a difficult class. These puppies are
usually going thru odd stages of growth and don’t always
reflect what they will look like as they get older.
1st. Summit Ironwood Tony Soprano. Orange
brindle parti. Beautiful head and eye with a good depth
of brisket for his age. Nice rear angles and short hock.
Moved out with reach and drive perfectly balanced.
2nd. Fantasias Kokopelli Kopykat. Black masked fawn. I liked this puppy and he had a very nice shoulder with
proper underline and topline but I could not get a good, solid look at him due to his lack of training. Open side gait but
just couldn’t put it together to win the class.
3rd. Endeavor’s Free To Go. Red brindle parti. A larger male, which measured in with no problem. Very
handsome with long neck and good body length. Moved with balance all the way around.
4th. Snow Hill Hot Stuff. Fawn/black brindle parti. Very big, dark eye and correctly placed shoulders. Could use a
little more width of thigh
12-18 dogs
1st. Surrey Hill’s Golden Boy. Fawn/white. This was a
very handsome, striking dog. Well balanced with nice,
gentle curves, beautiful head, neck and eye. Very nice
side gait. This dog spent too much time looking up at his
handler but was still an easy win in this class.
2nd Festiva’s Best Dressed Hottie. Black and White. Very smooth on the go around and a nice shape. Would
prefer more bend in pastern.
3rd. Harmony’s Puttin On The Ritz. Fawn brindle and white. Very striking, masculine dog. Had a tendency to move
flat with his head down on the go-round.
4th. Elida’s Fig Newton—Fawn and White. This placement was made on side gait and the down and back. Very
sound dog.
Novice dogs
1st. Karasar’s Optimist. Red brindle parti. Not very sure of himself but had nice depth of body with a very pretty
head and neck.
2nd. Plumcreek HW Midnight Flight. Black brindle parti. Nice moving dog with a good bend of pastern but needs
more ring experience.
3rd. Shaglan Wildaspen Eastr Wabbit. Fawn brindle. Deep chested, pretty head and eye but again, not sure of
himself and hopefully, will get more ring experience.
4th. Ringdove Avery-Eaton. Black. Pretty, strong neck on this dog with excellent bend of pastern, shown in hard
condition.

2nd. Lost Creek Bzantium Galewind. Fawn and White. Great long body with nice depth, good pasterns and really
pushed the 1st place dog. I know this dog could have moved out better but just didn’t want to do it on the day. The
handler thought it was her fault but he had that look in his eye like “nope, not gonna do it”.
3rd. Coreymore Tuscany of Chelsea. Red and white. Well balanced dog with good bone and moderate angulation
front and rear.
4th. Maverick Silver Tongued Devil. Red and White. This dog was in excellent condition. Very pretty head nice
underline and moderate all over.
Puppy Bitches 6-9
My Lord this class was hard!! I always thought it was a cliché
when judges said that many walked out of the class that would win
in a smaller entry. It’s true. The quality throughout was amazing.
1st Place Tangens Maverick Destination Moon. Irish
Marked Red Brindle. Like her brother (RWD), this little beauty
showed her heart out and had a gorgeous headpiece, lovely neck
with nice underline, very correct shoulders and moderate rear
angulation. Side gait with lots of reach and drive for such a young
lady. She pushed the RWB to the limit.
2nd Ableaim Making Memories Fawn and white. Long bodied bitch with beautiful eye, long neck and effortless gait.
3rd Lost Creek Dolce. Fawn and white. If this girl had an upbeat attitude she would be hard to beat. Moderate all
over and great little mover.
4th Andauer Eat My Dust! Red brindle parti. Good mover, not quite as refined as the other three but has nice
moderation in angles fore and aft and very sound coming and going.
Puppy Bitches 9-12
1st Snow Hill Calliope. Black with white trim. My, this is a
beautiful little girl. All her curves are in the right place. Beautiful arch
to her neck, great underjaw, nice depth of body for this age and a
nice short hock. Side gait was outstanding. This is one to watch.
2nd Summit Ironwood Crème Brulee. Fawn and White. Long bodied bitch with good depth of chest, very pretty
head and neck.
3rd Summit Ironwood Orange Marmalade. Red and white. Sister to second place.
No quite as long as her sister but very balanced, again with a lovely head and neck. Nice underline.
4th Summit Ironwood Just Ducky. Red and White. Sister to second and third. Longer in body than 3rd with nice
underline and rear angulation. Not as smooth over the shoulder as her sisters before her.

sound coming and going. Very pretty expression.
3rd Nysa Trio Venti Endeavor. Black brindle parti. This girl has some growing up to do but her outline, underline
and depth of brisket were outstanding. When she fills out in front she will be one to be reckoned with. When I first
looked at her she screamed Morshor!!
4th Kimera Karma de Kotan. Fawn and White. Longer and slightly larger than the other three. Nice neck blend into
shoulders and side gait was balanced.
st

1st Kentfield Wheatland Topogigio. Solid blue. She did not want to be in the ring! She made a go of it and was
incredibly well conditioned.
Bred By Exhibitor Bitch
1st Sporting Field’s Little Black Dress. Black and White. Boy,
for 16 months old, this girl is amazing. Her face was to die for and
she had a long, arched neck which blended seamlessly into a correct

gait was effortless and open and when you put the whole picture
together she was hard to deny. She was my RWB.

that absolutely took my breath away when she moved. Beautiful
balance and blending of body parts with a huge, round, dark eye,
long elegant neck into perfect shoulders and topline. Side gait was
easy flowing with great reach and drive.
She was easily my Winners bitch and I gave her a Select
because she demanded it with her breed type and movement.
2nd Brushwoods She B Smokin’. Red brindle parti. Amazing head and neck on this bitch flowing into great
shoulders. Nice bend of pastern, good width of second thigh.
I moved 1st and second together many times and, on the move, this bitch dropped off a little too much in the rear.

front fill with good shoulders and upper arm.

His expression was priceless with a huge dark eye and chisled face. Long neck into proper shoulders and upper arm.
