May/June 2016 Southern Bluffs Elementary Bobcat Bulletin Reflections on a Wonderful Year! Unbelievable! That is always my thought when I realize that we are fast approaching the end of another school year. It feels as if we were all just meeting up for our annual Open House and then “poof,” we find ourselves looking back at a year filled with learning, new friendships and lifelong memories. Endings provide me with the opportunity to reflect back in order to appreciate all of the many blessings found at Southern Bluffs. The greatest gift we are given each day is the opportunity to work with your children. They come to us so eager and ready to learn each and every day. All year long we watch as a community of family is built within each classroom. Students demonstrate on a daily basis that they care about their classmates, teachers and school. Thank you for sharing your children with us! We also are fortunate to have parents and guardians who value education and expect so much from their children and us as a staff. Thank you for your involvement; be it through volunteering in the classroom or at events, serving on the PTO, being one of our Cool CATS, helping with night-time homework, attending a field trip or listening to your child read. We truly are a village working together on behalf of all of the children. As a staff, I would argue that you would find none better. Everyone who works here spends endless hours working to make sure that they are prepared to deliver their very best. If the hearts of the caring and compassionate staff inside of it could fuel a building, we would keep the entire district up and running 24 hours a day, all year long. The end of this school year marks the end of the teaching careers for two of our rock-star staff members. Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Shedivy, who have impacted the lives of so many children, will retire in June. We are excited to hear about the many adventures that they are sure to experience but also know that, as is the case with family, it won’t be good-bye but simply, “See you soon, friend.” I wish you all a safe summer filled with fabulous family memories. When mid-August rolls around, you will feel as I do right now and will say to yourself, “Where did the summer go?” Take a moment to look back and enjoy the memories that were made and then turn your sights forward for the 2016-2017 Open House taking place on August 30, 2016. Moving this Summer? If you move over the summer, please stop by the Hogan Administrative Center at 807 East Avenue S. to register your new address. Proof of your new address will be required (copy of utility bill, lease, etc.). At the elementary level, families that move within the district to another school’s boundary area can opt to stay at the school they have been attending by completing a Boundary Exemption form. However, transportation is the parent’s responsibility and good attendance and adherence to school rules is mandatory. The provision to stay at the current elementary school does not apply to younger siblings that later seek a boundary exemption—they will be given preference and their entrance is dependent upon enrollment numbers/ classroom size. If you have any questions, please call the registrar at 789-7756. If your child receives transportation through the district, please call GO Riteway (see next page) to let them know your new address. We will be donating all remaining items left at the end of the school year so please take a look and see if anything belongs to your child. Supply Lists are on our website and will be available at local retailers this summer. Medication at School The end of the school year is fast approaching. If your child has any medications or inhalers (prescription or over-the-counter) in the health office they will need to be picked up by a parent or guardian on or before the last day of school. Medications WILL NOT be sent home with students for safety reasons. Medications that are not picked up by the end of the last day of school will be destroyed. Any medication that needs to be given at school (prescription or over-thecounter) has to have a new medication form for each school year. Over-thecounter medication (cough drops, Tylenol, etc.) only require a parent signature on the medication form. Prescription medications must have a physician’s signature as well as the parent signature. Southern Bluffs 2nd Grader, Roger F., won 3rd place in the Matt Hessel-Mial Contest. Way to go, Roger!! Planning for summer is already underway! There are many activities for kids in the La Crosse area and several are free or low cost. GO Riteway Transportation Group is honored to be chosen as the transportation provider for the School District of Lacrosse beginning with the 2016-2017 school year. We would like to highlight some of the preparations that have begun so we are ready for the first day of summer school 2016 and the 2016-2017 school year. We have established our home base at 2915 East Ave South. Our office is open Monday- Friday as we begin working on setting up the office and shop. When you drive by, you will see some of our buses in the lot. You may also see them on the road as we train and check out routes. We have established a team of seasoned GO Riteway staff members to build the foundation for our partnership with the School District of La Crosse. As a third generation family owned and operated transportation company, we take great pride in providing all of the school districts we serve superior transportation services by focusing on Safety, Customer Service and Employee Training. Our GO Riteway transition team is well versed in school transportation operations. They are working with our local GO Riteway team to build and guide them using our Mission Statement, our Core Values and everyday operational procedures. We are very pleased that so many drivers, monitors and support team staff wish to continue to service the parents and children of La Crosse. We have held open houses and job fairs at our location and are in the process of interviewing and welcoming people into the GO Riteway family. We in addition, are searching for additional people to join our local team. Please go to our web page: www.goriteway.com and go to employment tab to look for opportunities. We’re excited to participate in meetings with school district staff to review the student behavior program so everyone is well prepared to reinforce respectful, responsible and safe ridership behavior. We will provide ongoing communication on our progress so parents, students and school staff are part of growing this new partnership. We look forward the coming years as your transportation provider! We GO the Extra Mile ! Library Checkout News What a school of readers we have! Congratulations to all the wonderful Southern Bluffs readers. The Library Learning Center has been humming all year. We have increased our circulation by over 12,000 more checkouts this year! Next time you see Mrs. Melvin, our LLC Assistant, be sure to thank her for all she does to get these titles back on the shelves for our students and teachers. It is a very large job! Along with our high circulation, our LLC staff supports many classes, teachers and individual students with materials, instruction and resources to meet the needs of our curious learners with the addition of new books, technologies such as robots, Osmos for iPads and other innovative resources. Vocabulary Showdown Competition What a "showdown" it was! The Southern Bluffs 2016 Vocabulary Showdown was an amazing competition between 6 very "vocabulary skilled" teams. This year's winners are the following teams: Nerds-1st Place The Encyclopedias-2nd Place The No Names-3rd Place The top 2 teams move on to the District Showdown that will be held May 20, at the Black River Beach House at 9:00 am. Parents are welcome to attend. Congratulations to all for participating! Battle of the Books Reading List 2017 Next year's list has not been published as of yet but you can keep checking this website for the most current information on the Book List for the Elementary Division. Any 4th and 5th grader can form a team next year and compete! Start reading over the summer! http://www.wemta.org/programs/battle_of_the_books.cfm HPL Update We are nearing the end of the last HPL cycle here at Southern Bluffs. It has been a great year of good books, cool technology and new challenges for your students. Our ELA students are finishing up their last books and comprehension questions. In Math, students have been working hard with their computer programming skills. After being introduced to the course basics, students have been working through the Code Studio at the Code.org website using the online courses at: https://studio.code.org/ . Math students (or any student for that matter) can still continue or begin their work on these courses over the summer on your own computer or iPad to gain even more proficiency of their coding skills. Great Math Website for Math Fluency Check out this great website for students to practice their math fluency skills on over the summer or find some good math oriented books and resources from Greg Tang to enjoy at http:// www.gregtangmath.com/. Greg Tang is called the "math missionary" for the dedication and passion he has shown in sharing his love of math with students, teachers and parents in person and via his website. Check it out! Store: •Store unwashed peas in a perforated bag and use within a few days. •Blanched peas can be frozen and used within twelve months. Prepare: •Before use, wash under running water. Trim the stem end. Remember, the whole pod is edible! Snap peas may be consumed raw or cooked. Uses Serve fresh raw snap peas with dip for a quick snack.
