The Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five National Society of Black Engineers Junior
Chapter recently participated in the NSBE Annual Banquet, along with the chapters from Claflin
University and South Carolina State University.

“You must have passion and be willing to change or transform,” Mack said. “And you must be a
visionary. Blockbuster Video is out of business because they didn’t want to change. Amazon used
to sell just books; now they sell everything. Create the change, be the change.”
He went on to talk about the struggles of those who came before them to change things and how
from that change came the NAACP and Brown v. the Board of Education and eventually the first
black dean at Georgia Tech University and the first African-American president.

Mack ended with a story of how slaves in Mobile Bay, Ala. had a custom of going to the river at
high tide and throwing their babies into the river. If the child didn’t struggle, they let them die. If
